The Tony Awards Administration Committee met for the first time in the 2018-2019 Broadway season, and announced the first round of Tony Awards eligibility rulings. Seven productions were discussed at this meeting: “The Boys in the Band,” “Straight White Men,” “Head Over Heels,” “Gettin’ the Band Back Together,” “Pretty Woman,” “Bernhardt/Hamlet,” and “The Nap.”
The Tonys committee made the following determinations:
“The Boys in the Band” will be considered a revival per the “classic” rule and eligible for Best Play Revival.
Jim Parsons will be eligible for Lead Actor in a Play for “The Boys in the Band.”
Julian Crouch (scenic designer) and Andrew Lazarow (projection designer) will be considered jointly eligible for Best Scenic Design of a Musical for “Head Over Heels.”
Mitchell Jarvis will be eligible for Lead Actor in a Musical for “Gettin’ the Band Back Together.”

Joe Mantello’s recent Broadway staging of Mart Crowley’s The Boys in the Band will be eligible for a 2019 Tony Award – no surprise there – but theater trivia buffs might quibble with the category: Best Revival of a Play.
Although the gay groundbreaker has been staged many times since its Off Broadway debut in 1968, The Boys in the Band had never made its way to Broadway until Mantello’s star-packed production last April. So revival, or new play?
Revival, says the Tony Awards Administration Committee.
The decision was one of six announced today. Although the committee does not publicly explain its decisions, Boys’ 50-year production history – Broadway notwithstanding – apparently persuaded the committee toward the revival designation.
The designation was made during the first of four scheduled meetings planned by the committee for the 2018-2019 Broadway season. Other determinations made today:

Producer Ken Davenport has racked up an impressive collection of Tony Award nominations (and a couple of wins) for shows like “Once on This Island,” “Kinky Boots,” and “Spring Awakening.” But co-writing the book (with improv comedy group the Grundleshotz) for “Gettin’ The Band Back Together,” a musical about a 40-year-old Jersey boy who realizes his dream of starting a rock ‘n’ roll band, was surely a singular labor of love. At a recent preview, Davenport actually got up on stage before the show to tell us so, getting a big laugh by sharing the information that his Barry Manilow high-school tribute band called itself “The Barely Manilows.”
The writer-producer’s affection comes through in the show, which opens, appropriately enough, with a song called “Jersey.” “Perfect beaches and snow-capped hills / It’s like New York but you can pay your bills,” sing the hard-working chorus boys and girls, amusingly...

Just when we were about to get Daft Punk's suspiciously catchy summer anthem, "Get Lucky," out of our heads, we heard this very unlikely cover and were sucked into the groove once again.
This video gem turns the track into an Irish waltz. (Strange, we know, but it works.) Kudos to the Postmodern Jukebox and Mitchell Jarvis for bringing the song some additional Irish luck.

Entertainment Weekly and MTV Movies Blog is reporting that Tom Cruise has secured the role of aging rock star Stacee Jaxx in the movie adaptation of the highly-successful, Tony-nominated Broadway show, “Rock of Ages.”Cruise’s involvement with the film dates back to October, when he was first being courted with the role. Cruise’s character, played by Mitchell Jarvis in the Broadway show and MiG Ayessa in the U.S. tour show, sings Bon Jovi’s “Wanted Dead or Alive”. He also has singing parts in other ensemble songs such as “I Wanna Know What Love Is”. His character is also an egotistical womanizer, so it’s fitting that in the Broadway show he’d be on [...]...

Chicago – “I wanted to explore deep, thoughtful theatre,” deadpans a giddily vitriolic narrator, played here in a last minute swap-out by Mitchell Jarvis, during the eleventh hour of “Rock of Ages”. Although referring to any aspect of this rollicking, trenchantly self-aware jukebox ride in classical terms may either be mawkishly generous or downright offensive to its recalcitrant intent.
After all, in a production adorned with sequined motor jackets, zippy pop hits and fried and dyed locks, no one wants to bogart that joint.
Play Rating: 4.5/5.0
Impishly situated amongst a seemingly relentless throng of hit-or-miss jukebox musicals, “Rock of Ages” is a puckish offering that delivers the sort of raucous treats that stretch beyond the initial charm of its pungent 80s nostalgia. With the searing vocals of a fiery cast dispatching a hayrick of hits from the likes of Bon Jovi, Journey, Pet Benatar, Whitesnake and Poison, all amidst Beowulf Boritt’s stylized backdrop of L.
