WikiLeaks founder to judge films at the 21st Raindance Film Festival; 2013 line-up unveiled.Scroll down for full line-up of films

Julian Assange has joined the jury of the 21st Raindance Film Festival (Sept 25 - Oct 6), a London-based event that celebrates independent film in the UK and around the world.

The appointment is a controversial one. The Australian editor-in-chief and founder of WikiLeaks took refuge in the Ecuadorean embassy in London in June 2012 to avoid extradition to Sweden, where he is wanted for questioning about sexual assault allegations.

It is understood that he fears Sweden would extradite him to the Us, where he believes he is wanted in relation to WikiLeaks’ disclosure of a significant amount of classified Us military and diplomatic documents.

Commenting on Assange’s appointment, Raindance founder Elliot Grove said: “Every year Raindance invites interesting people to join our jury. In the past we have had musicians like Mick Jones, Marky Ramone and [link...

Michel Hazanavicius' "The Artist" dominated the Orange British Academy Film Awards (BAFTA) taking home 7 trophies including Best Film, Best Director (Hazanavicius), Best Actor (Jean Dujardin), Best Original Screenplay, Best Costume Design, Best Cinematography, and Best Original Music. "The Artist" won 7 out of its 12 nominations.

Tomas Alfredson's "Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy" was also a big BAFTA winner taking home the Best British Film and Best Adapted Screenplay awards.

In the acting categories, Meryl Streep won the Best Actress award for her Margaret Thatcher performance in "The Iron Lady," Christopher Plummer was given the Best Supporting Actor award for "Beginners," and Octavia Spencer won the Best Supporting Actress award for "The Help."

The Artist was named Best Film at tonight's Orange British Academy Film Awards hosted by Stephen Fry, held at London's Royal Opera House. The film also won six other awards: Director, Original Screenplay, Original Music, Cinematography, Costume Design as well as a performance award for Jean Dujardin who won the Leading Actor BAFTA.

Meryl Streep was awarded the BAFTA for Leading Actress for her performance as Margaret Thatcher in The Iron Lady; the film was also honoured in the Make-Up & Hair category.

Well the 2012 BAFTA Awards are over (unless of course you’re watching them on a catch-up service) and the event was filled with very little surprises – The Artist repeated its success from both the Richard Attenborough Film Awards and the London Critics’ Circle Film Awards and my bet (despite my love for his competition) for the Outstanding Debut Award, Paddy Considine, did walk away with that award. Of the awards Real surprises, I’m so happy for Christopher Plumer, who walked away with the Best Supporting Actor award for Beginners, and Octavia Spencer who won the Best Supporting Female award for The Help (although like many I thought that would go to Carey Mulligan for Drive).

The 2012 Orange BAFTA ceremony tonight was, as expected, dominated by Michael Hazanavicius’ silent black-and-white love story The Artist.

Taking home seven awards in total, including ‘Best Film’, ‘Best Director’, ‘Best Actor for Jean Dujardin’, ‘Best Original Screenplay’, ‘Original Music’, ‘Cinematography’ and ‘Best Costume Design’, The Artist won almost every category it competed in.

Although Dujardin was a surprise over George Clooney for Best Actor, there was no shock for Best Actress with the BAFTA going to Meryl Streep for The Iron Lady, which was also honoured for the extraordinary Make-up & Hair category.

In the supporting category The Help’s Octavia Spencer won Supporting Actress and Christopher Plummer won Best Supporting Actor for Beginners, as expected.

Outstanding British Film and Adapted Screenplay went to Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy with Senna (Documentary, Editing) and Hugo (Production Design, Sound) also winning two Baftas.

So there we have it. The 2012 BAFTA Awards have now drawn to a close. The Artist had an amazing night taking seven awards including that of the award for Best Film. Michel Hazanavicius’s black and white silent film also took awards for Best Actor, Original Music, Cinematography, Costume Design, Original Screenplay, Best Director and Leading Actor. Simply amazing!

Senna came away with two out of the three awards it was nominated for including Best Editing and Best Documentary which was a new category for this year.

Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy won two awards for Best Adapted Screenplay and Outstanding British Film but a rather big surprise was that Shame directed by Steve McQueen and starring Michael Fassbender and Carey Mulligan left empty handed. The full list of winners is below.

Hello everyone and welcome to our favourite day in the British film calendar. We’re here in the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden for the 65th annual BAFTA awards and while the red carpet is being ironed and our colleagues fight off the cold anticipation is building for what should be an excellent evening.

Two of the films dominating the nominations are paeans to the magic of cinema with Michel Hazanavicius’ The Artist and Martin Scorsese’s Hugo up for numerous awards though a particular favourite of ours here on HeyUGuys, Nicolas Winding Refn’s Drive, has been championed within the Academy and find itself up for Best Film, Director and a Supporting Actress nod for Carey Mulligan.

BAFTA announced their 2012 film nominations today, and I really need to get out there and see The Artist! It landed the most nominations with 12. Tinker Tailer Soldier Spy got 11 noms, and Hugo got 9. I also think it's great that Drive got a Best Picture nomination, unfortunately Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 did not. It will be interesting to see who and what films take home the awards.

The Orange British Academy Film Awards take place on Sunday 12 February at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, London. The ceremony will be hosted by Stephen Fry and will be broadcast exclusively on BBC One.

The British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) has announced its nominations for this year's award show and The Artist leads the way with a total of 12 nominations, showing us that silent films could be making a comeback.

A close second is Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy with a total of 11 nominations, competing against The Artist for Best Picture, Best Director and Best Actor nominations for the films' respective leading men, Jean Dujardin and Gary Oldman. Brad Pitt is also gunning for Best Actor for Moneyball alongside his pal George Clooney for The Ides of March.

Other films receiving nominations include The Descendants, Drive The Help, Hugo, My Week with Marilyn and the The Iron Lady.

For the ladies, nominations include Berenice Bejo for The Artist, Tilda Swinton for We Need to Talk About Kevin and Viola Davis for The Help.

Outclassing stateside awards, the British Academy of Film and Television Arts have announced nominations for the 65th British Acadamy Film Awards. One of the big Oscar frontrunners, The Artist, walked away with 12 nominations, including Best Film, Director, Original Screenplay, Leading Actor and Leading Actress. Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy gets a moment in the sun with 11 nominations -- not really any surprise that the film would get lots of BAFTA attention -- and Hugo took 9 nods, though mostly for smaller categories. Drive, which has mostly been ignored in the Us awards rounds so far, got a nod for Best Film, and Attack the Block and Submarine were both nominated for Outstanding Debut By a British Writer, Director or Producer. London -- It's spry versus spy as frothy silent movie "The Artist" and moody thriller "Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy" lead the race for the British Academy Film Awards, Britain's equivalent of the Oscars.

"The Artist" received 12 nominations and "Tinker Tailor" 11, with each film up for best picture and director, and best actor nominations for leading men Jean Dujardin and Gary Oldman.

The other best-film nominees announced Tuesday were "The Descendants," "Drive" and "The Help."

In a diverse field not dominated by any single film, there are also multiple nominations for "Hugo," "My Week With Marilyn," "The Iron Lady" and "The Help."

The nominations are another feather in the cap of "The Artist," a black and white French film about a silent film actor's fall with the rise of talkies.

This morning the British Academy of Film and Television Arts announced their shortlist of nominees for the forthcoming 2012 BAFTA awards.

The longlist was announced a couple of weeks ago and caused the usual controversy with a few omissions standing out however there was an overall sense that 2011 was a good year for the British film industry and this morning Daniel Radcliffe and Holliday Grainger took to the stage to reveal the final list of those competing for the awards.

The shortlist for the Orange Rising Star award has already been announced with Chris Hemsworth, Adam Deacon, Tom Hiddleston, Chris O’Dowd and Eddie Redmayne up for the prize. The awards ceremony will be held on the 12th of February and Martin Scorsese is this year’s inductee into the BAFTA fellowship, which should complement the rave reviews and awards buzz he is getting for Hugo.

Kate Moss was in head-to-toe black this morning on her way into a London photo studio with her hairdresser pal James Brown. SXSW Film Festival Announces Midnight Features & Shorts

Austin, TX – Today the SXSW Film Festival revealed their Midnight Features & Shorts program.

The Midnighters section of SXSW is known for premiering the work future stars of the horror genre. Filmmakers Eli Roth, and Ti West, are a few notable directors who have had their films screened during the Midnight Features.

”Our midnight programs are the bloody, beating heart of SXSW,” said SXSW Film Conference & Festival Producer Janet Pierson. “Since the beginning, midnight films have been an essential ingredient to what makes SXSW so exciting and fun, and this year’s selections are no exception.”

Out of over 3000 short films submitted, only 150 were chosen, and will screen as part of twelve overall shorts programs.

Following the unveiling of the fantastic 2011 feature line-up last week, the South by Southwest Film Festival has announced the films selected to play at midnight throughout the nine-day event, as well as the complete list of short films.

Insidious, a haunted house flick from Saw director James Wan, is among the midnight program, along with Xavier Gen’s sci-fi thriller The Divide, Sundance favorite Hobo With a Shotgun, Argentinean entry Phase 7, and Joe Cornish’s Attack the Block. In previous years, the midnight and SXFantastic programs has helped launch the careers of Gareth Edwards (Monsters) and Eli Roth (Hostel).

Spike Jonze returns to the festival with another short film titled Scenes from the Suburbs, his second collaboration with (and about) the band Arcade Fire after his moving feature Where the Wild Things Are.

For those of you attending the festival, the schedule will be released on February 15 along with details about film-related panels.

Today the midnight features and short sections were announced for SXSW 2011.

This year the midnight features section has some awesome films, including Hobo With A Shotgun, James Wan’s Insidious, Joe Cornish’s Attack the Block, Xavier Gens’ The Divide, and Ben Wheatley’s Kill List. This years shorts include 150 films including, Spike Jonze’s Scenes from the Suburbs and a doc short from Jay Duplass.

The 2010 Los Angeles Film Festival is set to run June 17-27 in a brand new location. Oh, it’s still in L.A, but it’s moving across town, from Westwood — where it’s been held the past few years — all the way over to Downtown.

The main “hub” for the fest will be the new L.A. Live complex, but there will also be screenings at other locations, such as the Downtown Independent and Redcat theaters. The city is really trying to build downtown up into a major arts and culture hub, so the festival moving there fits in with that agenda. Film Independent, the organization that runs Laff, also runs the annual Independent Spirit Awards, an event that also moved downtown — from Santa Monica — this year.

Looks like we are not the only one that got caught up in Oscar night fever. British had their own BAFTA fever!

The 63rd British Academy of Film and Television Arts, equivalent of our Academy Awards, hosted by Jonathan Ross, was held the 21st of February at the Royal Opera House. It was a special night for those who worked hard during the preceding year, and gave their best effort to justify British cinema confidence.

The Academy Awards might be the mack daddy of Award shows, but the UK counterpart, the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (or BAFTAs), are pretty great too.

The Baftas were held last night and the big winner was "The Hurt Locker" -- which walked away with six awards including Best Picture and Best Director for Kathryn Bigelow.

Those of you readers with a love of film and access to BBC American might have caught the 2010 BAFTA -- British Academy of Film and Television Arts -- Awards yesterday. It's even possible that you read about the winners before seeing the ceremony, as the BBC-a broadcast aired a couple of hours after the live show.

The big winner of the evening was "The Hurt Locker," also one of this year's top-nominated Academy Awards contenders, alongside "Avatar." The Kathryn Bigelow-directed war story nabbed six awards, including Best Film, Best Director and Best Original Screenplay. Meanwhile, "Avatar" only picked up two technical awards, for Best Production Design and Best Visual Effects.

The other surprise of the evening was "Twilight" star Kristen Stewart, who picked up the Orange Rising Star Award, which is bestowed by public vote. Duncan Jones' "Moon" also finally got some accolades, scoring the award for Outstanding Debut by a British Writer,...

The Hurt Locker was named Best Film at the British Academy Film Awards, held at London’s Royal Opera House. The film also won five other awards: Director for Kathryn Bigelow, the first woman to win the award, Original Screenplay, Cinematography, Editing and Sound.

Avatar won the BAFTAs for Production Design and Special Visual Effects. Up took home the awards for Animated Film and Music. The Young Victoria won the Costume Design and Make Up & Hair awards.

Carey Mulligan was awarded the BAFTA for Leading Actress for An Education. The Supporting Actress BAFTA went to Mo’Nique for her role in Precious: Based on the Novel Push by Sapphire. Colin Firth won the Leading Actor award for A Single Man and the Supporting Actor award was presented to Christoph Waltz for Inglourious Basterds. All four were first-time winners.

Honoring the best and brightest in entertainment, the 2010 Orange British Academy Film Awards (BAFTA) took place in London, England on Sunday evening (February 21).

Held at the Royal Opera House, the big winner ended up being "The Hurt Locker" - which took home Best Director, Original Screenplay and Film on its way to six total awards.

Meanwhile, Carey Mulligan was named Best Actress while Colin Firth scooped up the Best Actor trophy during the evening ceremony.

Other winners included "Twilight" actress Kristen Stewart, who received the Rising Star Award while Vanessa Redgrave was presented with the Academy Fellowship.

Winners of the 2010 BAFTA Awards have been unraveled in a ceremony held at The Royal Opera House in Covent Garden, London on Sunday evening, February 21. Among those walking away with the coveted prizes were "An Education" star Carey Mulligan and "A Single Man" leading man Colin Firth.

24-year-old Mulligan was announced as the winner of Best Leading Actress by last year's Best Actor winner Mickey Rourke. Besting over the likes of Saoirse Ronan, Gabourey Sidibe, Meryl Streep and Audrey Tautou, she said, "I really didn't expect this at all, so I didn't think of anything to say. Thank you so much BAFTA."

"The Hurt Locker" isn't feeling any pain right now.

Following on the heels of an original screenplay prize at the Writers Guild of America awards, "The Hurt Locker" took an impressive six awards home from the 2010 Orange British Academy Film Awards, the British equivalent of the Oscars, on Sunday (Feb. 21).

The Iraq war drama won for best film, best director for Kathryn Bigelow, original screenplay for Mark Boal, cinematography, editing and sound.

"The Hurt Locker" has been on a roll lately. Besides the WGA, the Directors Guild of America also recognized Bigelow with their top prize. With the Oscars just around the corner, it bodes well for "The Hurt Locker."

As the great and good are quickly ushered out of London's salubrious Royal Opera House, shoved into the nearest waiting limo and whisked to their respective after-show parties, the time has come to tally and take stock of the big winners at this year's British Academy Film Awards.

As with all of the major films awards of 2010 thus far, the big battle at this year's Baftas was between James Cameron's Avatar and his ex-wife Kathryn Bigelow's The Hurt Locker and the big winner on the night was Ms Bigelow who blew away all the competition with a grand total of six awards including (surprisingly but brilliantly) Best Film and Best Director. Avatar, meanwhile, was relegated to two relatively minor awards for Best Production Design and Best Special Effects.

Quite how this will affect the runners and the riders for this year's Oscars remains to be seen but it...

The British Academy of Film and Television Arts has narrowed down its longlist and unveiled the nominations of the 2010 BAFTA awards. "Avatar," "The Hurt Locker," and "An Education" each scored eight nominations but "District 9" was close behind with seven.

The nominations for the British Academy of Film and Television Arts awards were announced this morning, and leading with eight each are An Education, Avatar, and The Hurt Locker. The line-up looks much like what we’ve seen in earlier awards with the obvious skew towards British-born selections like Carey Mulligan, underrated comedy In the Loop, and first time director Duncan Jones.

Notable snubs include Bright Star shut out in every category but costume, Avatar missing a spot for screenplay to The Hangover, and Sam Rockwell for Moon.

The Brits certainly like our flicks with Avatar and The Hurt Locker scoring eight nominations each from the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA). However, they didn’t overlook one of their own accomplished films with An Education also grabbing eight nominations. But what’s really impressive about the BAFTA nominations isn’t where they’ll most likely overlap with the Oscar nominations, but where they’re going to diverge. District 9 has seven nominations and matches Avatar in every category except Best Picture and Best Director (but it also has a Best Screenplay nomination, while Avatar does not). I am a little surprised that in their Best Supporting Actor category, they overlooked Peter Capaldi for In the Loop, but you have to love a country where Andy Serkis can get nominated for Best Actor (that’s not meant ironically; it truly is great–we should’ve nominated...
