When Court TV began re-airing the first trial of Erik and Lyle Menendez during the pandemic, an entirely new generation became aware of the 1990s murder case that was a media sensation years before they were born.
The Beverly Hills brothers were 18 and 21, respectively, when they shot and killed their parents, José and Kitty Menendez, in 1989. Their initial 1993 trial, where they were tried jointly and with separate juries, ended in a hung jury. The female jurors sided with their self-defense argument, that both boys had been sexually, physically and emotionally abused by their father since they were children and that, with their mother in the know, they feared for their lives; but the male jurors did not.
“The first trial was a hung jury. It was not something that a jury of their peers was able to convict them on, and it was almost retried for a whole new generation...

The producing team behind Netflix’s new documentary on the Menendez brothers began working on their project four years ago. What began with a letter turned into a phone call from Lyle Menendez, which would kickstart both his and brother Erik’s eventual participation in The Menendez Brothers, which is now streaming.
In the lead up to the two-hour documentary’s Monday premiere, Ross Dinerstein and Rebecca Evans of Campfire Studios spoke with The Hollywood Reporter last week, where they weighed in on the recent developments in the case, following the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s office reviewing new evidence, as well as the cultural movement pushing for the release of the brothers (also thanks to Netflix’s hit Monsters series) who were convicted of killing their parents, José and Mary Louise “Kitty” Menendez, and sentenced in 1996 to life in prison without parole.

It was only last week that Netflix announced they were readying to release a documentary with the Menendez brothers, a project that would feature Erik and Lyle Menendez speaking for the first time in decades about the sensational double murder that sentenced them each to life in prison back in 1996.
The announcement came just days after Netflix’s scripted series on the brothers — Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story — had become the No. 1 show on the streamer, which prompted a rare public statement from Erik Menendez, who came out against that take on the brothers’ 1989 murders of their parents, José and Mary Louise “Kitty” Menendez. Amid the whirlwind two weeks of press since Monsters first launched — where producer Ryan Murphy and the extended Menendez family have also shared their views on the series in a public forum — Kim Kardashian visited the brothers in prison and then advocated for their release in a viral op-ed.

Erik and Lyle Menendez are getting their own non-“Monsters” platform on Netflix.
Continuing a recent trend for true-crime series, Netflix will soon debut a documentary on the Menendez brothers to accompany their fictionalized Ryan Murphy series “Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story,” which was released last week. The documentary, titled “The Menendez Brothers” and directed by Alejandro Hartmann, will be released on October 7.
Hartmann’s doc aims to offer “another perspective” on the infamous case. We got the trailer today — watch it below.
This one-two combination of a scripted series and then a documentary mirrors the strategy Peacock has employed with its “Dr. Death” seasons. NBCUniversal’s Peacock also recently released a series of Scott Peterson interviews from prison, which followed Netflix’s “American Murder: Laci Peterson.”

Star Wars sequel trilogy star Daisy Ridley is swapping a lightsaber for an axe for her first foray into the horror genre.
Ahead of its world premiere at Australia's Adelaide Film Festival this November, Variety has shared the first official stills from new zombie survival thriller We Bury The Dead.
Written and directed by Zak Hilditch, the movie stars Ridley as a woman named Ava who is searching for her husband in the aftermath of a catastrophic military experiment that has decimated the population of Tasmania.
Ava joins a “body retrieval unit” in a desperate attempt to find out what happened to her husband, and ends up being tasked with burying the corpses. However, she soon comes to realize that some of the bodies aren't quite as dead as they should be.

Back in October, we heard that Star Wars sequel trilogy star Daisy Ridley (who is set to return to the Star Wars universe for another film that is meant to launch “the next chapter” of the franchise) had signed on to star in We Bury the Dead, a survival thriller from Zak Hilditch, the director of the Stephen King adaptation 1922 (which featured an incredible performance from star Thomas Jane). That film has since made its way through production and will be having its world premiere soon, as well as a special preview event at Australia’s Adelaide Film Festival in November – so, in anticipation of those events, Variety was able to get their hands on a batch of first look images! You can check them out in this article.

Daisy Ridley, star of the “Star Wars” sequel trilogy, is a different kind of vigilante in Zak Hilditch’s upcoming horror-survival-thriller “We Bury the Dead.”
The film, which will have its world premiere shortly and hold a special preview event at Australia’s Adelaide Film Festival in November, unveiled a first look at Ridley in the role of a desperate woman who joins a body retrieval unit, hoping to find her husband alive after a disastrous military experiment destroys the population of Tasmania. As she sifts through the corpses, she discovers that many are not quite dead.
Ridley’s character looks haggard as she journeys to the south of Tasmania and is forced to make peace with her own unfinished business in the face of futility.

Are you optimistic about the Dallas Cowboys 2024 NFL season? Well, recent history suggests you probably shouldn’t be. (Giants fan over here.) But there is something exciting leading in to the summer’s training camp: a new cheerleading docuseries from director Greg Whiteley, the man behind Netflix’s “Cheer” and “Last Chance U.”
“America’s Sweethearts: Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders,” a collection of seven 45-minute episodes, will follow the 2023-24 squad (last season’s team) from start to finish — meaning from their auditions to the team’s inevitable late-regular-season or early-post-season collapse. The cheerleaders are led by their longtime director Kelli Finglass.
The docuseries, which is definitely not “Cheer” Season 3 (except it definitely should be), premieres on June 20 on Netflix.
Whiteley executive produces alongside Adam Leibowitz for One Potato Productions; Andrew Fried and Dane Lillegard of Boardwalk Pictures and Ross M. Dinerstein and Rebecca Evans of Campfire Studios also executive produce for their respective companies.

Today, Netflix announced that the series America’s Sweethearts: Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders will premiere this summer on the streaming service. The series follows the 2023-24 Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders squad from start to finish — kicking off at auditions and training camp and continuing all the way through the NFL season.
From Emmy Award-winning director Greg Whiteley and the team behind Cheer and Last Chance U, the seven-episode series will give viewers unfiltered access to this iconic team and franchise.

Led by longtime director Kelli Finglass, the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders open their doors to document the personal stories behind the uniforms, revealing the drive, hustle, and drama among the cheerleaders and coaches. For many, making the team is a dream—but that’s only the beginning.
The seven-episode series is a production of One Potato Productions and Boardwalk Pictures in association with Campfire Studios.

The Dallas Cowboys cheerleaders once again will be the subject of an unscripted series — this time at Netflix.
The streamer says its show, titled America’s Sweethearts: Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders, will premiere in the summer and counts Cheer and Last Chance U’s Greg Whiteley among its executive producers (he also directs). The Netflix series will debut some two-and-a-half years after the long-running Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders: Making the Team ended after 16 seasons on CMT.
Where the latter show often had the structure of a competition series, America’s Sweethearts — at least based on a brief teaser — looks to bring more of a polished, behind-the-scenes feel to its seven episodes. The show will chronicle the 2023-24 season for the cheerleaders and will “document the personal stories behind the uniforms,” according to Netflix’s description.

Hunter Schafer and Noomi Rapace will star in “Palette,” a psychological horror film directed by Zach Strauss (“Smilf”) in his feature debut.
Strauss penned the script for “Palette,” which was featured on the 2023 Black List. He is also a writer on Spike Lee’s upcoming feature “Da Understudy.”
“Palette” follows Dolly (Schafer), “a woman suffering from extreme synesthesia, a rare condition where she is able to hear colors,” according to the film’s synopsis. She is soon “recruited into a secretive, cult-like industry of color design, uncovering the dark reality of what it takes to make the world’s greatest hues.”
Rapace is set to play Latrice, the company’s enigmatic executive. Frankie Shaw is also in the cast as Sidney, Dolly’s cutthroat rival.
Schafer is starring in another horror film, Tilman Singer’s “Cuckoo,” which is set to have its world premiere at Berlin Film Festival this month.

Exclusive: Prime Video has greenlit The Money Game, a docuseries tracking the revolutionary impact of “name, image and likeness” (Nil) policies on college sports.
Campfire Studios, Axios Media, and Shaquille O’Neal’s Jersey Legends, a division of Authentic Studios, are producers on the project, which will stream exclusively on Prime. It follows a number of notable sports docuseries and doc features on Prime Video, including Coach Prime, an inside look at Colorado’s football program under Deion Sanders, and Kelce, about Philadelphia Eagles center Jason Kelce. On a broader level, sports has become a cornerstone of the Amazon-owned streaming service, notably NFL Thursday Night Football. That regular viewership for live sports provides opportunities for related shoulder programming.

The cast of the new comedy features an ensemble that includes Gina Rodriguez, Damon Wayans Jr., Joel Courtney, Augustus Prew, Liza Koshy, Ego Nwodim, Marin Hinkle and Tom Ellis. Among other consumer benefits, one major upside to the increasing niche-ification of popular culture has been the continuing emergence of esoteric micro-genres of film and TV. Twenty years ago, you might not necessarily think of “horror documentaries” as its own subgenre. Sure, there were documentaries that maybe fell a little more on the creepy/unsettling side, but it was rare that a nonfiction film would be tailored to appeal to a horror-first genre audience. Now, of course, things are different. In recent years, a robust tradition of terrifying nonfiction films have emerged, many as terrifying – or even more eerie – than their traditional narrative counterparts.

The fascination over American Gladiators isn’t over just yet: Three weeks after ESPN aired 30 for 30: The American Gladiators Documentary, Netflix is now shining a spotlight on the inimitable ’80s competition show that gave us Nitro, Gemini and thrilling jousts with what looked like giant, padded Q-tips.
Like ESPN’s penetrative two-parter from director Ben Berman (The Amazing Jonathan Documentary), the new Muscles & Mayhem: An Unauthorized Story of American Gladiators (dropping June 28 on Netflix) reminds us that TV’s first big reality show stars weren’t privileged women who throw wine in fits of rage. They were pumped-up athletes who donned patriotic colors while playing Goliath to some poor civilian’s David in a makeshift battledome.
But while ESPN’s documentary from Vice Media focuses more of its narrative on Johnny Ferraro, the infamous figurehead behind the memorable franchise, Muscles & Mayhem keeps the attention on the gladiators and how,...

BuzzFeed, the internet news site that popularized the listicle and broke major political and entertainment news, is the subject of an upcoming documentary from Kelsey Darragh, a former staffer and filmmaker.
The film, which is currently in production, is backed by producer and financier Bright West Entertainment, which previously made “Subject” and “Sirens.” The company has partnered with the Emmy Award-winning production team at Campfire Studios, makers of Hulu’s “WeWork” and HBO Max’s “Low Country,” on the project.
The filmmaker say they plan to track BuzzFeed’s “rapid ascent and dominance in the early days of viral video,” but it’s not all clicks and soaring traffic. The film will also look at the “chaotic and often criticized workplace environment” at BuzzFeed. The company went public in 2021 and its stock has had plummeted more than 80 since then.
The film has a personal connection. Darragh, the maker of an upcoming documentary feature “Rehumanize,...

HBO Max has announced a November 3 release date for Low Country: The Murdaugh Dynasty, a three-part documentary series on the sensational murder case involving one of South Carolina’s most prominent legal families.
The series directed by Mor Loushy and Daniel Sivan will unpack the twists and turns of a sprawling investigation that has seen lawyer Alex Murdaugh accused of fatally shooting his wife and his 21-year-old son Paul on the night of June 7, 2021. Murdaugh has pleaded not guilty and is expected to stand trial early next year in a potential death penalty case.
Several months after the killings, Murdaugh’s law firm forced him out after alleging he had misappropriated millions of dollars in funds belonging to clients and the firm. The case took another bizarre turn in September 2021 when Murdaugh claimed he had been shot in the head by an assailant near his home. He later admitted he...

Weigh Down Ministries and its titular method of weight loss and religious worship have been a subject of public fascination for years. Whether it was because of leader Gwen Shamblin's eccentric appearance or the allegations of its Remnant Fellowship Church promoting eating disorders and abuse, it seemed like it was a must-know for anyone even slightly interested in the workings of "unconventional" churches. However, when Shamblin and six other leaders of Weigh Down Ministries died in a 2021 plane crash, public knowledge about the group spread further than it had ever had before, causing their secrets to be unearthed once more.
These secrets and the history of the group were covered in the HBO Max docuseries "The Way Down: God, Greed, and the Cult of Gwen Shamblin," which was set before and after Shamblin's death. Now that the docuseries has proven popular for true crime fans, it will now be...

Sarah Paulson is set to star and exec produce the HBO Max scripted adaptation of its docuseries The Way Down: God, Greed, and the Cult of Gwen Shamblin.
Deadline broke the news in April that the streamer was adapting its documentary about the cult-like figure, who died last year, as a scripted series.
Paulson will play Shamblin, who rose to fame with her Weigh Down Workshop, a Christian-based diet program, and founded the Remnant Fellowship Church. She was a charismatic figure with a carefully curated image who was accused of emotional, psychological and physical abuse and exploitation for the church’s alleged cult-like practices.
Michelle Dean, who recently served as showrunner and exec producer of Hulu’s The Act, starring Patricia Arquette and Joey King, will serve as showrunner and exec producer of the scripted series, which comes from Ross Dinerstein’s Campfire Studios and Chrissy Teigen’s Huntley Productions

Sarah Paulson is no stranger to playing real people: Among other roles, she won an Emmy award for her portrayal of Marcia Clark in 2016’s “The People v. O. J. Simpson: American Crime Story,” and was recently nominated for an Emmy for “Impeachment: American Crime Story” for playing Linda Tripp. Now, Paulson is attached to star and executive produce the scripted adaptation of “The Way Down: God, Greed, and the Cult of Gwen Shamblin,” which HBO Max is developing from its own five-part docuseries.
Michelle Dean, who was the co-creator of the 2019 Hulu limited series “The Act,” is the showrunner of the scripted adaptation.
HBO Max dropped the first three episodes of Marina Zenovich’s investigative docuseries “The Way Down” on Sept. 30 of last year. It detailed Gwen Shamblin Lara’s rise from being a diet guru with her Weigh Down Workshop (launched in 1986) to the founding of her Tennessee church,...
