Tom Hardy was last seen in the recently released Venom: The Last Dance, which seems to be struggling at the box office. The final film of the Venom trilogy will mostly be Hardy’s last appearance as the loud-mouthed symbiote. While the franchise was not one of the best, Hardy’s performance as Eddie Brock and Venom stole the show.
Hardy is no stranger to blockbuster franchises, with one of his earliest roles being Star Trek: Nemesis. The actor played an evil clone of Patrick Stewart’s Captain Picard in the film. While Hardy may not be a fan of the film, the perfect comeback for him would be in Quentin Tarantino’s canceled R-rated Star Trek film.

In 2017, an unexpected bit of news arrived: Quentin Tarantino was going to make a "Star Trek" movie — an R-rated "Star Trek" movie, to boot! While Tarantino has always written his own scripts, his proposed "Star Trek" movie would change things up — Tarantino would pitch some ideas, and a different screenwriter would cobble them together into a screenplay. After consulting with a group of writers, studio Paramount tapped Mark L. Smith, who wrote "Overlord," "The Revenant," and this year's "Twisters," to tackle the script.
I got to speak with Tarantino in 2019, when he was still working on "Once Upon a Time in Hollywood." During the course of the conversation, I asked him to confirm if he was going to make a "Star Trek" movie. "It's a very big possibility," Tarantino told me. "I haven't been dealing with those guys for a while cause I've been making my movie. But we've talked...

The news that Once Upon a Time... in Hollywood director Quentin Tarantino was planning to direct a Star Trek movie received an overwhelmingly positive response from Trekkies. Star Trek 4 had completely stalled and his R-Rated take on the franchise was bound to be unlike anything we'd seen before.
The project never came to fruition, with Paramount Pictures now focusing on a new prequel movie with Andor filmmaker Toby Haynes attached to direct from a screenplay by Dark Shadows writer Seth Grahame-Smith.
The studio reportedly intends to still make the "final chapter" of the Chris Pine-led era of Star Trek movies, with Steve Yockey (The Flight Attendant) attached to write a new draft of that screenplay. As for Tarantino's scrapped plans, it all goes back to his desire to make 10, and only 10, movies as a filmmaker.
"It's never going to happen," he tells Bill Maher in the video below (via SFFGazette.

28 years after the original movie, Kate (Daisy Edgar-Jones) is using Dorothy to get a new invention off of the ground — a powder that should decelerate the power of a tornado if it gets swept up. After a catastrophic disaster with an F5, Kate puts her dreams on the back burner until her friend Javi (Anthony Ramos) entices her back to Oklahoma. While there, she meets YouTube sensation Tyler (Glen Powell), who describes himself as a ‘tornado wrangler.’ As the trio race for the best storm, Kate learns both guys aren’t as they appear.

“Twisters” director Lee Isaac Chung wanted to capture the spirit and culture of storm trackers, whose profession requires a great deal of time in cars and trucks.
“Everybody I talked to in Oklahoma who chases, music is such an integral part of it,” said Chung when he was a recent guest on IndieWire’s Toolkit podcast. “Anytime I’d ask, ‘What’s on your playlist?’ you’d see them break into a smile, and everybody has a different music choice.”
In the Chung household, there is a rule: Whoever is driving picks the music. On “Twisters,” director Chung drove the proverbial train, and the country music lover got to build his dream soundtrack. For a film that takes part mostly on dirt roads in rural areas of Oklahoma, with characters driving into storms when most sane people are headed in the other direction, an outlaw country music sound also made sense.

Updated Monday Am: Universal/Warner Bros/Amblin’s Twisters is higher this morning after a $21.57M Sunday, which puts the Lee Isaac Chung-directed, Mark L. Smith-penned tentpole at an opening of $81.2M. That’s close to double what the first movie opened to back in 1996, at $41M.
The question now is whether the movie can be sequelized. What’s gonna happen? More tornadoes? One has to take the setting to some fresh locale where there aren’t tornadoes, i.e. New York City.
Universal does it again: Twisters opening is just $1.1M shy of what Oppenheimer opened to a year ago. Counting the third weekend of Despicable Me 4, Universal made $105.55M between the top two films at the box office.
Updated Sunday Am: Universal has called the domestic opening for the Lee Isaac Chung-directed Twisters at $80.5M, as we told you last night. That’s 60% ahead of...

It was a happy ending this weekend for everyone involved in “Twisters,” the non-quite-sequel/not-quite-reboot of “Twister,” the 1996 hit and Oscar-nominee for Best Visual Effects and Best Sound. Directed by two-time Oscar nominee Lee Isaac Chung (“Minari”) and written by Oscar nominee Mark L. Well, a happy ending for everyone except for Powell’s character of Tyler Owens, who gets to chase Edgar-Jones’s Kate Carter into Will Rogers World Airport in Oklahoma City and … not kiss her. Most in the audience probably expected a smooch, especially...

Quentin Tarantino can easily be one of the most genius yet pickiest filmmakers in Hollywood. Additionally, he ensures that every film bearing his name is exceptional and devoid of any mediocrity. That is the only explanation for the director’s previous statements that he hopes to make ten excellent movies and leave Tinsel Town with a well-curated legacy in cinema history.

Quentin Tarantino’s vision for Star Trek remains a tantalizing possibility, but it comes with a twist that might hinder its realization. Known for his distinct storytelling style, Tarantino once envisioned a Star Trek film that promised to inject his signature flair into the beloved franchise. However, a key concern has emerged: the striking resemblance of Tarantino’s concept to a major Marvel franchise.

[Editor’s note: The following story contains mild spoilers for “Twisters”]
Lee Isaac Chung’s “Twisters” hits theaters this weekend, 28 years after the release of Jan de Bont’s original “Twister.”
But while the classic branding will no doubt inspire some disaster movie fans to check the film out in theaters, many have pointed out that the sequel stands on its own without relying on many direct connections to the 1996 first film.
Still, some have noticed that one scene in “Twisters” felt like a natural opportunity to bring back one of the original film’s biggest stars — and expressed puzzlement when that didn’t happen. Many fans believed that Daisy Edgar-Jones’ Kate could have been the daughter of Dr. Jo Harding, the storm chaser that Helen Hunt played in “Twister.” But when Kate returns to Oklahoma to visit her mother in “Twisters,” her mother turns out to be an unrelated character played by Maura Tierney.

I was fourteen years old and going to see Twister at the old Famous Eight here in good old Montreal, an old suburban movie theatre that was showing a movie in Thx for the first time ever. It had a rock solid cast of characters, all of whom were memorable, plus two perfect regular Joe heroes in Helen Hunt and Bill Paxton, with the movie, believe it or not, actually a disaster movie quasi remake of the classic screwball comedy His Girl Friday,...

David Corenswet is about to become a massive movie star. The "Pearl" and "The Greatest Hits" actor is about to be Clark Kent in director James Gunn's "Superman," which is due to hit theaters next summer. We recently got a look at Corenswet suited up as Superman and it instantly took him to another level of stardom. Before he makes his mark on the DC Universe, he's starring in another big blockbuster in the form of "Twisters." Serving as a standalone sequel to the 1996 classic blockbuster "Twister," it's one of the biggest movies of summer 2024.
Directed by Lee Isaac Chung ("Minari"), on paper, "Twisters" couldn't be more different than "Superman." One deals with exaggerated versions of natural disasters, while the other is a superhero movie centered on otherworldly beings. However, as Chung recently explained to The Hollywood Reporter, Corenswet did bring a little bit of Supes with him to this film's set.

Glen Powell honors the memory of Bill Paxton as Twisters carves a new path of destruction in cinemas
As Twisters churns and thrashes its way into theaters, one of the film’s stars, Glen Powell, is paying tribute to the late actor Bill Paxton, who helped make the first film a classic. Paxton starred alongside Helen Hunt in Jan de Bont’s 1996 action blockbuster as Bill Harding, an accomplished storm chaser on the verge of changing the way extreme weather patterns. Despite not getting along on set, Paxton and Hunt’s chemistry in Twister is electric, and the film would only be nearly as memorable with Paxton’s energy, bravery, and entertaining approach to the material. In a post on social media, Powell remembered the late Paxton, whom he worked with on the 2013 film Red Wing.
“As we release Twisters into the world today, I just wanted to look up and tip my hat to the legend that is Bill Paxton,” Powell shared on Twitter. “A great friend...

Warning: This article contains complete spoilers for "Twisters." Reader discretion is advised.
Deep down, all of us are attracted to danger in one form or another. Sure, most of us wouldn't consider ourselves daredevils, but the act of living requires some level of risk on a daily basis. As such, it's easier (if not simple) to understand the actions of those people who do take their lives in their own hands, because they do so for multiple reasons: one, for the sheer visceral thrill of doing so, but two, because they know, as we all do, that taking a risk is the best way to ensure actual results.
On the surface, "Twisters" may seem an odd duck when compared to the plethora of legacy sequels that have arisen over the last 15 or so years. Unlike most legacy sequels, there are no returning characters from the original 1996 "Twister" who make an appearance,...

Twisters isn't an announced remake of Jan de Bont's 1996 cow-chucker Twister, but it kinda is? Lee Isaac Chung (Minari) honors the beloved storm-chasing picture by borrowing plot milestones for his blustery "continuation," yet it's hardly a copycat. Twisters is an exhilarating summer blockbuster with plenty of giddyup, trading Van Halen needle drops for buckin' Wild West rambunctiousness. Chung's breathtaking intimacy as a storyteller never sacrifices the adrenalized thrills found in life-threatening tornado hunts, swirling together rapturous disaster sequences with adventurous mavericks who yee-haw their way into our hearts. It's hands-down one of the 2024's champion titles so far, meant to be experienced on a gigantic theater screen.
The film's setups are familiar, but new characters hardly make for a stale Twister regurgitation. Daisy Edgar-Jones stars as Kate Cooper, the New York City meteorologist called back into action five years after tragedy strikes in the field. Kate's former colleague...

When it’s not trading cows for chickens, Twisters is a pretty good time. Directed by Lee Isaac Chung, presumably because his Oscar-nominated Minari also featured Southern property damage, this 30-years-late sequel is best enjoyed by ignoring the original. We know. Lore is currency in this age of continuity, but...

Chicago – “Twisters” is the kind of movie seemingly engineered to be seen on a big screen, accompanied by ear splitting sound that rattles your seat. And in that kind of environment, it’s exactly the kind of big dumb popcorn movie it sets out to be, even if it doesn’t add up to much once it’s all over.

British actress Daisy Edgar Jones dons an American accent as a storm chaser named Kate who walks away from chasing tornadoes after a twister kills most of her high school research team. But she’s lured back by the other survivor Javi (Anthony Ramos), who has new gadgets which could help them produce the first 3D models of a twister in action … which could be used to devise better warning systems and save lives.

Jan de Bont’s Twister remains one of the most beloved blockbusters of the 1990s, at least for the millennials who grew up with it. That’s chiefly due to its still-awesome special effects, fashioned at a time when filmmakers were delighting in experimenting with the newfound possibilities of CGI. Each storm was meticulously crafted and impressively tactile, making good on the film’s tagline, “It’ll blow you away.” So why, in an even more advanced cinematic landscape where any phenomenon can be easily created with the click of a computer mouse, does Lee Isaac Chung’s long-gap sequel, Twisters, barely kick up dust?
Twisters lacks any real explicit narrative connection to the original beyond featuring the storm-tracking device nicknamed Dorothy. If you were forced to pick a '90s blockbuster that lent itself to the legacy-sequel craze, the original "Twister" would probably be near the bottom of the list, and "Minari" director Lee Isaac Chung would be the very last name you'd pick to bring such a follow-up to life. Boy, what a difference nearly 30 years makes. Back then, there was practically a cottage industry built around productions featuring an A-list headliner surrounded by a strong stable of character actors, a journeyman filmmaker bringing a sturdy sense of direction, and a straightforward enough hook to put butts in seats. A movie like that merely needed a savvy marketing push and the promise of big-screen spectacle to set it on the right track ... and thrill-seeking audiences could be relied upon to take care of the rest and lead it to box-office glory, thank you very much.

Watching an actual barn burn to the ground while filming “Minari,” Lee Isaac Chung knew he wanted to make a disaster movie.
The Academy Award-nominated filmmaker behind that bittersweet and semiautobiographical portrait of South Korean immigrant life in rural Arkansas is now the director of “Twisters” — not a reboot, not a sequel, but an expansion of the world built (and destroyed) by the 1996 tornado blockbuster. Here, a team of science-loving storm chasers led by Daisy Edgar-Jones and Anthony Ramos become rivals to a group of scrappier thriller seekers led by Glen Powell in this summer’s ultimate blockbuster spectacle — and its most forceful argument for the importance of the big-screen experience.
But back to that barn-burning that so intoxicated its director. In “Minari,” Jacob (Steven Yeun) watches flames engulf his barn after his mother-in-law (Yuh-Jung Young) sets fire to it. Filming that moment was a high Chung has been chasing ever since,...

Nearly 30 years later, we now get Twister 2, cunningly entitled Twisters. But you know what? There’s more to this than a bit of wind.
When, in 1983, Anthony Perkins reprised the role of Norman Bates for a sequel to Alfred Hitchcock’s classic Psycho, there was much scoffing. On the one hand: a sequel to Psycho! Are you mad? On the other, it’d been – get this – 23 years since the first film came out. What kind of gap between a first and second film was that? Further madness.
Twisters, then.
Twenty eight years after Jan de Bont’s weather-em-up Twister threw cows at the screen and had the brilliant duo of Helen Hunt and the much-missed Bill Paxton chasing tornados, Hollywood has spat out a sequel.
Why? Well, money.
It’s clearly a project that follows the sequel template, as the title tells you. You got one twister in the first film,...

Audiences appear to be blown away by Twisters as social media buzzes with the first reactions to the high-velocity action film. The standalone sequel to the 1996 film Twister makes landfall in theaters on July 19, one week before Marvel‘s Deadpool & Wolverine puts a hit out on the summer box office. Thankfully, many reactions to Twisters are glowingly positive, with audience members praising Glen Powell and Daisy Edgar Jones’s on-screen chemistry, brilliant direction by Lee Isaac Chung, and thrilling special effects.
People across Twitter say Twisters feels like a “good old fashioned Summer blockbuster,” with adrenaline-fueled action, a predictable yet effective story, and compelling protagonists who make the wild ride well worth the price of admission. Several of those who have seen the film predict it will “blow the theatrical roof off,” giving cinephiles another reason to enjoy their local theaters’ air conditioning and salty concessions.

Usually, predictable, generic films full of clichés end up suffering from these characteristics, often seen as negative aspects. Personally, I endorse the theory that execution can turn a fantastic idea into a terrible movie, just as it can tremendously elevate a mere variation of a worn-out premise. I also believe that films can perfectly be what they’re expected to be – nothing more, nothing less. Disaster flicks are known precisely for the attributes mentioned above, but they possess a layer of simple, straightforward entertainment that wins over audiences and critics worldwide. And there’s nothing wrong with that.
It’s, indeed, a special genre. So much so that we’re getting a standalone sequel to a 1996 classic, Twister. Jan de Bont’s original movie inspired Lee Isaac Chung (Minari) and Mark L. Smith (The Revenant...

One of the elements that gave Twister such a visceral charge back in 1996 was its balance of practical effects with CGI, during a transitional period when the latter was becoming more seamlessly integrated into live action. Jan de Bont’s propulsive direction and two appealing leads with great chemistry also helped. Arriving almost three decades later, Twisters gets the job done in terms of whipping up life-threatening tornadoes that leave a trail of wreckage in their wake. But the extent to which all this is conjured with a digital paintbox lessens the pulse-quickening awe of nature at its most destructive.
The movie marks a confident enough move to a much bigger canvas for director Lee Isaac Chung, whose personal connection to the rural American heartland brought such aching tenderness to Minari. That quality can be discerned in this film’s feel for geography, with red clay backroads cutting through verdant Oklahoma fields,...

A stand-alone sequel to the second-biggest summer blockbuster of 1996, Lee Isaac Chung’s “Twisters” might belong to a different millennium than Jan de Bont’s original, and it only shares a single character with that cow-flying classic of early Hollywood CGI (a data machine named Dorothy), but each of these spectacles is swept along by the same creative ethos. To quote a character who’s racing to save as many civilians as he can from the massive tornado that rips through an Oklahoma town during the climax of Chung’s film: “We’ve gotta get everyone into the movie theater!”
Much like its predecessor, this rousing and surprisingly romantic gust of multiplex fun spins a strange combination of genres into a conventionally satisfying ride. Twisters whipped up a frenzy in London on Monday night as the Lee Isaac Chung disaster epic touched down at Cineworld Leicester Square for its European premiere. Before any tornadoes hit the screen, audience members got some early thrills courtesy of a very special guest in the crowd: Tom Cruise.
The Hollywood superstar attended the screening in support of his Top Gun: Maverick pals, including Glen Powell, who stars in the Universal Pictures and Warner Bros. release opposite Daisy Edgar-Jones, Harry Hadden-Paton and Anthony Ramos. There’s another Top Gun connection: That film’s director, Joseph Kosinski, is credited with story by credit on Twisters, which was written by Mark L. Cruise has also long been close to Steven Spielberg, who executive produced the new Twisters as well as the original 1996 film.

Never underestimate the allure of Mother Nature.
A recent poll conducted by David Herrin’s The Quorom found that tornadoes — and not the movie’s talent — are the chief reason moviegoers want to see Universal’s upcoming summer tentpole Twisters, which hopes to turn into a category five-plus storm when it opens domestically on July 19.
Of the 703 people surveyed, 570 expressed some level of interest in seeing Twisters. They were then presented with a list of options, and told to pick as many as they wanted.
Nearly 60 percent cited tornado action as the driving reason for wanting to see the film. Special effects were next (52 percent), followed by 50 percent who were fans of the original Twister movie and 22 percent who live in tornado-prone areas.
Among talent, 19 percent cited Powell as the driving reason, followed by Daisy Edgar-Jones at 17 percent. Rival studios say those are strong numbers for talent.

Twisters, the Glen Powell-Daisy Edgar Jones sequel to the 1996 action movie is looking at a $50M start, per tracking, when it opens July 19. Lower end of pic’s forecast is at $45M.
Like everything in the current marketplace, walk-up business and a heat wave are driving all forecasts higher than where tracking has been spotting figures, but this movie always was figured by distribution sources as one of summer’s wins. The question is, with all the tornado warnings going on this summer, will people want to watch havoc wreaked on the screen? Well, it didn’t stop them back in 1996, when the first movie, released by Warner Bros and directed by Jan de Bont opened to $41M and went on to make $241.7M domestic.

The forecast is looking better than good for Lee Isaac Chung’s Twisters.
The summer tentpole — featuring a high-wattage cast that includes Daisy Edgar-Jones, Glen Powell and Anthony Ramos — is tracking to open to $55 million over the July 19-21 weekend in North America, according to market leader The National Research Group. Universal, which is handling the film domestically, is being more conservative in suggesting $40 million to $45 million considering that tracking has been off as of late in many cases. Some believe Twisters could even do more than $55 million, such as research firm The Quorom, which is predicting $54 million to $61 million.

Twisters opens 28 years after filmmaker Jan de Bont’s Twister, starring Helen Hunt and Bill Paxton, whipped up a Category 5 storm at the box office. Universal and Chung have been clear in saying that the new film isn’t a sequel, but a “current-day chapter” of the first film.

In 2022, Paramount announced that filming on the new Star Trek movie would begin at the end of that year, with all of the main actors expected to return to work. The last film in the series was released in 2016, and due to its poor box office performance, the franchise went on hiatus.
All the while, Paramount was trying to figure out what to do next. Among other things, the studio wanted to give Quentin Tarantino a chance to make his own R-rated Star Trek film. It never went into production, but details about the movie are still emerging.
Tarantino Expressed His Desire to Make a Star Trek Movie in 2015
In late 2015, Quentin Tarantino was asked if he would make a Star Wars movie. The director said that Star Trek was closer to his heart. In his opinion, many episodes of the classic TV series can easily be expanded to fit the length of the movie.

Lee Isaac Chung’s Twisters sequel will receive its Italian premiere at this year’s Taormina Film Festival, which takes place July 12 to July 19 in southern Italy.
Twisters will screen at the festival’s historic Teatro Antico amphitheater. This year’s event will mark the festival’s 70th edition. The film will be released in Italian theatres on July 17 via Warner Bros. Pictures and will hit North American cinemas on July 19 via Universal Pictures.
“I am grateful to Warner Bros. for this wonderful gift, which confirms one of our programming guidelines: relying on diversity of styles,” said Marco Müller, artistic director of the Taormina Film Festival. “With Twisters, Lee Isaac Chung has gone from his Academy Award-winning drama Minari to deliver a spectacular cinematic event speaking to an even wider audience.”
Twisters is billed as “a sweeping current-day chapter of the 1996 blockbuster.” The film stars Golden Globe nominee Daisy Edgar-Jones as Kate Cooper, a former storm chaser, and Glen Powell who plays Tyler Owens, a charming and reckless social media superstar. The synopsis reads: Two opposing forces, come together to try to predict, and possibly tame, the immense power of tornadoes.
The cast also features Golden Globe nominee Anthony Ramos (In The Heights), Brandon Perea (Nope), Golden Globe awardee Maura Tierney (Beautiful Boy), and Sasha Lane (American Honey), along with David Corenswet (the upcoming Superman), Daryl McCormack (Peaky Blinders), Kiernan Shipka (Chilling Adventures of Sabrina) and Nik Dodani (Atypical).
Producers are Frank Marshall (the Jurassic Park and Indiana Jones franchises) and Patrick Crowley (the Jurassic Park and Bourne franchises). The film was written by Mark L. Smith, screenwriter of The Revenant, from a story by Joseph Kosinski, based on characters created by Michael Crichton & Anne-Marie Martin.
The Taormina Film Festival is promoted and organised by the Fondazione Taormina Arte Sicilia with the support of the Assessorato del Turismo dello Sport e dello Spettacolo della Regione Siciliana of the Sicilia Film Commission, the Municipality of Taormina and the Ministry of Culture–General Directorate for Cinema and Audiovisual (MiC).
