Feisty teenager Sigga longs to move to California from her small hometown in Iceland. At least the scenery’s interesting
Here’s yet another quirky indie film with a feisty teenager who longs to get as far away from her birthplace as possible. The setting is a small fishing town in Iceland, however, which lends an interesting international flavour to a movie where, curiously, all the Icelanders speak English to one another. This is because Sigga (Kristín Auður Sophusdóttir), the disaffected protagonist, is about to board a plane to Topanga, California, and so everyone must speak “Californian”. Alas, the script is just as thin as this bizarro excuse.
Accompanied by a group of her best friends, one of whom always carries a canoe with him because, again, this is a quirky coming-of-age-film, Sigga’s numerous attempts to leave home are constantly thwarted by chance encounters. She randomly sits in a...

When a group of students hire a luxury yacht for an end of term party they are looking forward to a night of drink and debauchery. They soon discover, however, that there is an additional passenger on board – a mutant creature that is determined to pick them off one by one. The night of their lives soon becomes something straight from their nightmares.
The first thing that strikes you about The Ninth Passenger is not the cast of chads, or the choice to shoot scenes in a ridiculous soft-focus… No, it’s the goddamn soundtrack. "Why hack the ships when you can hack the pilots?" Dust has debuted an impressive new sci-fi short film titled Sky Fighter, available to watch in full for free today on their YouTube channel. This dense 15-minute short is about two pilots fight a war in the distant future in their fighter-bomber spacecraft. But is the true enemy their alien opponent...or each other? This is just a few notches above the usual homemade sci-fi, with an awesome set and some fantastic VFX work throughout. There's one incredible shot when they finally get a look out of a window. I love when filmmakers go all out reminding us what space is really like and in order to leave us in complete awe. Sky Fighter stars Tom Maden, Jess Gabor, and Erik Palladino. There's also a killer score by Bobby Villarreal to go along with the visuals. Highly recommend giving this your time.

Based on the slasher movies, this TV series wasn't exactly a "killer" in the ratings but it did well enough for MTV to renew Scream for a second season. Will the ratings rise or fall this time around? Cancelled or renewed for season three? Stay tuned.
Season two of the Scream TV show picks up with Emma Duval (Willa Fitzgerald) returning to Lakewood. She's spent several months at a retreat and hopes to put the horrific events of last season behind her. Good luck with that. The rest of the cast includes Amadeus Serafini, Bex Taylor-Klaus, Carlson Young, Conner Weil, John Karna, Kiana Lede, Santiago Segura, Sean Grandillo, Tom Maden, and Mike Vaughn (voice only).

If you enjoyed the first season of MTV’s Scream: The TV Series, you should undoubtedly enjoy what the show has to offer in the Season 2 premiere, as not only do we get another murder mystery to dig deep into, but we also get a few new major storylines, more flushed-out characters, and a viciously blunt killing to kick things off in grand, gory style.
As far as the story goes, Scream: S2 picks back up with the Lakewood Six several months after the murder spree that uprooted their lives and changed their small community forever. It’s revealed that Emma (Willa Fitzgerald) had been away receiving deep therapy for the trauma she had undergone after being nearly filleted by last season’s killer and it has left her relationship with Kieran (Amadeus Serafini) strained to say the very least. When Emma returns, she’s greeted awkwardly with a surprise party thrown by Kieran,...

There’s a thousand things to say about Wes Craven and what he did for the horror genre, especially in the Scream franchise, and there are plenty of great pieces on the man all across the internet, so I won’t repeat was has already been articulated. We wouldn’t have this show without Wes Craven and Kevin Williamson’s Scream franchise, which is one of the only horror franchises without a single bad installment. Even the weakest entry (Scream 3) is still pretty good. Horror, at one level, functions as an interplay between what...

Just as we began watching the season’s fourth episode, “Aftermath”, my friend turned to me and jokingly remarked, “Isn’t it sickening how fucking rich these kids are?” We laughed, but then the episode did something we weren’t expecting—it laughed with us. The show had unexpectedly, yet very enjoyably, turned on its characters. It agreed, it is sickening how fucking rich these kids are.
This was completely different from where the show stood on how it wanted its audience to perceive its characters in the first three episodes. The first episode ended with Noah telling Riley and the audience that “You have to care about these characters, so when they do get killed, you feel it.” The first three episodes had the intent of making the audience root for the characters,...

Despite scepticism from fans of the franchise, MTV's Scream series honours the first rule of remakes: don't eff with the original...
The Scream franchise is deservedly adored by cinemagoers and critics, and widely considered to be one of the best horror films to come out of the back end of the 90s. You can certainly see why, with Kevin Williamson's tack-sharp script packed with zingers, its overall clever subversion of the genre, a sterling central performance from Neve Campbell and an undercurrent of cheeky fun. The third act is still, to this day, a triumphant blend of humour, (literally) knife-edge tension and genuine scares.
Few horror movies have achieved what Scream did. Or, to give it its dues, what Scream 2 also did. The sequel to Wes Craven's original hit could have been a messy affair but it achieved an improbable feat: it was just as fun and spooky as the first.

If one glances around at the Movie-to-tv adaptation landscape, things are looking surprisingly good. Hannibal is the best show on television right now, Fargo was one of the best surprises of last year and looks like it will continue as such in its second season this fall, and now MTV is adding one more Movie-to-tv adaptation to its roster; shout out to MTV’s other Movie-to-tv breadwinner Teen Wolf, a show that is totally unashamed of how ridiculous and heightened it is and succeeds because of it. MTV’s Scream is so far surprisingly not terrible in the same way that Albert Pujols is playing surprisingly not terrible baseball right now–it’s a comfort, but you still expect more.
This new series takes the iconic Scream franchise and fits it to television,...

One episode was provided for reviewing purposes prior to broadcast.
“You can’t do a slasher movie as a TV series,” posits the new resident meta-expert of MTV’s Scream, Noah Foster (John Karna). The token nerd argues that slasher movies burn bright and die fast, bodies piling up within minutes and the big reveal happening a sleek 90 minutes later. TV is more languid, giving ample opportunity to build up characters just in time to, in the case of the opening seven minutes of this new Scream, slit their throats. “You have to care. You have to root for them. So when they are brutally murdered, it hurts.”
I’ve spent approximately 41 minutes with this gaggle of hyper-aware, alcohol-guzzling millennials, and maybe the most surprising thing about the show is that, in all the efforts I put against it and its overly cutesy advertisements, I cared, and it did hurt.

If there’s one modern franchise I revisit several times a year, it’s Wes Craven’s Scream series (yes, even Scream 4). Ever since Drew Barrymore first took that ill-fated phone call, I was hooked and through three sequels, I’ve been there every step of the way, rooting on Sidney Prescott and hoping to see Ghostface dispose of his victims in the goriest of fashions.
Now that Scream is heading to the small screen with MTV’s new television series iteration, which begins on June 30th, those in attendance last night at the 2015 Los Angeles Film Festival had the opportunity to watch the first episode during a special red carpet event at the Regal Theaters at La Live. I will admit to being rather intrigued- and nervous- going into this first episode because I wasn’t sure how the approach was truly going to work but, much to my surprise,...

On paper, General Education looks like a passable summer teen comedy. Written by newcomers Elliot Feld, Jaz Kalkat and Tom Morris, and directed by Morris, the film seemingly has the right ingredients: A good-looking, but slightly geeky high school hero (Chris Sheffield); an overbearing dad (Larry Miller); clueless mom (Janeane Garofalo); eccentric little sister (Mckaley Miller) and a passel of weird loser friends (Skylan Brooks, Harvey Guillen, Sean Przano and Seth Cassell). Oh, and lest we forget, there’s a beautiful girl (Maiara Walsh) and a bully (Tom Maden) thrown in for good measure, too....
