When it comes to champions of forgotten sex symbols, you can’t do much better than Quentin Tarantino.

Snubs from the annual Oscars in memoriam segment are always uncomfortable, but 2023 was an especially awkward year for the Academy. Leslie Jordan, Anne Heche, Tom Sizemore, Paul Sorvino, and more celebrities who had recently passed were excluded from the ceremony. The cover-box for Alister Grierson's Sanctum trumpets the involvement of James Cameron, the 3D-enthusiast who changed the game a few years ago with Avatar.  Holding the cover box in your hands, you might be inclined to believe that Sanctum was directed by Cameron-- that seems to be the implication (or, at the very least, it would be to the type of people that rent Transmorphers thinking they're getting Transformers)-- but a little careful reading reveals that Cameron only executive-produced the film.  You knew that, of course, and I knew that, but what about all the idiots that'll think Sanctum's Cameron's latest film?  They're in for a few very-unpleasant surprises.  Read on for our Blu-ray review of Sanctum, after the jump. [1] Michael Bay's Transformers: Dark of the Moon premiered this week at the Moscow Film Festival, and the first reviews have begun to appear online. What did people think of the film? Was it better than Revenge of the Fallen? Does it surpass the first film? Is this the first live-action film worth seeing in 3D since Avatar? I've compiled links to the first wave of reviews, and printed excerpts after the jump. The internet was abuzz last week when Michael Bay took it upon himself to coerce and instruct projectionists to present his blockbuster baby Transformers: Dark of the Moon in the highest brightness possible. The director and his crew seem to be spewing every chance about its technical merits. Its star Shia Labeouf (who is known for saying whatever audiences want to hear) told the La Times that “it’s the greatest 3-D film ever made.” Is he lying or could this be true after the abysmal Revenge of the Fallen?

The review embargo lifts tomorrow (when I’ll be seeing it), but I’ve rounded up any impressions I could get my hands on below. Deadline also has the actual letter Bay sent to projectionists. Check it out below, followed by impressions of the film.

G-Force - "Imagine experiencing, at warp speed and for 90 minutes, the reality of the infamous Richard Gere gerbil joke. Next, add a bunch of "clever" allusions to authentic films of varying quality: Die Hard, Mission: Impossible, Scarface, Apocalypse Now, Indiana Jones, and Transformers. Then, throw on a superficial layer of cutesy references to such bastions of pop culture as the Pussycat Dolls and "Pimp My Ride" before accessorizing with a throbbing Black Eyed Peas musical accompaniment. It is through this unholy mating of Walt Disney Studios with producer Jerry Bruckheimer that G-Force was spawned. If Bruckheimer's presence ain't enough to convince you that this movie is awash with meaningless action, then consider the fact that the director, Hoyt Yeatman, is not only a veteran Hollywood effects pro but also, quite tellingly, was the visual effects supervisor for Armageddon and The Rock, both of which were directed by Michael "Boom!" Bay.

Self-congratulatory warning -- I just heard that the Los Angeles Press Club bestowed yours truly the second place for Best Film Critic for their National Entertainment Journalism Awards.

I was nominated in two categories -- Best Feature (I didn't win, darn it :happy) and Best Film Critic. Last year, I was honorable mention, and cliche aside, I'm just honored to be nominated, are you kidding me? Being in the throes of the Los Angeles Press Club is honor enough!
