Scott Derrickson’s The Gorge didn’t get much fanfare in the UK at least – but it’s proven a sizeable hit for Apple TV+.
A week or so ago, Maria took a look at the new movie from director Scott Derrickson and writer C Robert Cargill, The Gorge. Derrickson and Cargill are an effective pair, having collaborated on films such as The Black Phone, Sinister and Doctor Strange, among others. They’ve been working on The Black Phone 2 as well, but snuck The Gorge in first.
It debuted last week on Apple TV+, and in the UK at least, to barely any fanfare. Publicity seemed light, the press tour never made it this far, and it seemed like it was dropped onto streaming and left to be.

Apple TV+ has a huge hit on its hands as The Gorge has become its biggest movie yet. The film, which stars Miles Teller (Whiplash) and Anya Taylor-Joy (The Queen's Gambit), was directed by Scott Derrickson and has beaten the premiere of Apple's hit movie, Wolfs, which starred George Clooney and Brad Pitt.
The Gorge follows two snipers from different nations, Levi (Teller) and Drasa (Taylor-Joy), as they stand guard over a gorge that holds many mysteries. Despite being on either side of the gorge in two separate watch towers, the two become close. But when the pair learn what the evil is that lurks at the bottom of the gorge, they have to fight to stop it from leaving. Sigourney Weaver also stars, and the script was written by Zach Dean.
When the movie premiered on Apple TV+ on Feb. 14, it quickly shot up to number one on the streamer's chart.

Scott Derrickson's newest film, The Gorge, has climbed to the top of the streaming charts on Apple TV+ just a day after it was released on the service. The Apple original film, which stars Anya Taylor-Joy and Miles Teller, had an impressive debut and is a prime example of how Apple's original programming manages to stay relevant and stand out in a crowded library on streaming services and countless original films and series. Top Gun: Maverick star Miles Teller has addressed the rumors linking him to Martin Scorsese's delayed biblical epic. While attending the premiere of his latest movie, the horror thriller The Gorge, Teller was asked directly about the rumors, which suggest he's playing Jesus for the legendary filmmaker.
Last year, rumors circulated that Scorsese was considering Teller and Andrew Garfield to star in an upcoming project: an adaptation of Shūsaku Endō's 1973 novel A Life of Jesus. At the premiere of The Gorge, Teller denied that any talks had transpired between him and the acclaimed director. Speaking with Variety, Teller responded "Noooooooo," when asked if he was set to portray the biblical figure on-screen.
And while those talks have not taken place, that doesn't mean that Teller wouldn't be interested in working alongside the Taxi Driver director.

The Gorgeis kinda like that old saying often attributed to the writer Mark Twain, “If you don't like the weather in New England now, just wait a few minutes.” This multi-genre tale begins by establishing a tantalizing sci-fi premise, then setting it aside for a low-flame romance between top-billed Miles Teller and Anya Taylor-Joy, then ditching that for a final hour of increasingly mindless action. It’s a genre mashup where each component never quite makes it over the hump, although there are pleasures to be gleaned in a straight-to-streaming sort of way.
The film's central mystery — namely what evil lurks at the bottom of a fog-shrouded gorge — keeps us engaged until the mystery is solved, at which point the film becomes less credible and less interesting. Miles Teller certainly scored points in Top Gun: Maverick, but now with The Gorge he has really flown into the danger zone.
Valentine’s Day is certainly appropriate to release this hybrid of several genres including horror, sci-fi, action and romance, the latter due to a clever “meet cute” angle between two sharp-shooting assassins hired to guard East and West towers separated by 600 meters, below them an imposing, dense, foggy forest that holds a dark secret.
No doubt it is a lonely job when Bartholomew (Sigourney Weaver), the shady corporate operative who is one of the few who knows of the top kept secret of what the Gorge holds, recruits Levi (Teller), an ex-Marine and private contractor, a hit man talented with guns and weapons who Bartholomew decides is perfect for the yearlong assignment of making sure there is no escape from the mysterious gorge, a place of which even nine Russian heads and 13 U.

The Gorge director Scott Derrickson opened up about his newest sci-fi action horror movie, which will feature Golden Globe winner Anya Taylor-Joy as an elite sniper tasked with guarding the gateway to hell. This marks Derrickson’s first high-profile action movie in a while, after directing Doctor Strange in 2016.
In an interview with GamesRadar+, Derrickson confirmed that he was inspired by several popular horror video games like Silent Hill and Until Dawn, during the development and production of The Gorge. "I love those games, and I do think that gaming has sort of set the bar for gun-play action, especially if you're really with a single character or two characters, you kind of can't beat it," he shared. "I think that the challenge of the movie was not letting it fall into just the straight, chaotic stimulus of gaming-type action. The challenge was to have that kind of stimulus and power and really utilize that.

Filmmaker Scott Derrickson jumped into the world of superhero films as the director of the first Doctor Strange film released in 2016. He chose not to pursue the sequel, instead walking away from Marvel Studios to focus on different endeavors.
In a new interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Derrickson touched on his decision to walk away from the sequel that ultimately became Sam Raimi's Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. He clarifies that there's no bad blood with Marvel and he's happy with his time spent in the MCU. You might not expect a film by Scott Derrickson to feature a sexy dance scene set to a song by Yeah Yeah Yeahs, but you get it in The Gorge, his new horror romance coming to Apple TV+ on Feb. 14. "All the needle drops, those are all choices that I made, that I felt were right for those scenes," explained Derrickson in a recent interview with MovieWeb. "I wanted there to be a real dance number instead of a sex scene. It was kind of more of a sex scene in the script. And I was like, 'That's not romantic enough.' You know, I want to stretch it out. Miles Teller and Anya Taylor-Joy are the dancers (and snipers) who guard a mysterious gorge, not to keep people out, but to keep something in.

Scott Derrickson’s The Gorge is about the lengths human beings will go to for love. The action romance contains a handful of other genres on top of it, but the crux of writer Zach Dean’s story centers on the distant courtship of two lonely snipers named Drasa (Anya Taylor-Joy) and Levi (Miles Teller). For a period of one year, the highly skilled operatives are contracted to stand guard at their own individual observation towers that are separated by a 600-meter gorge. More specifically, the two gatekeepers are tasked with preventing whatever evil lurks at the bottom of the ravine from getting out into the world.
Despite communication being forbidden by their employer, Drasa and Levi can’t help themselves after prolonged isolation. So they proceed to bond from afar until Valentine’s Day changes everything. Ultimately, Levi risks life and limb to cross the gorge and meet the...

The Black Phone was one of the best movies of 2022 and one of the best horror films of the decade so far, but it was almost completely self-contained. Things seemed wrapped up in a truly satisfactory way by the end of the movie, and the villain (played to perfection by Ethan Hawke) seemed completely dead. The film's acclaimed director, Scott Derrickson, put his heart and soul into The Black Phone, which was a very personal and cathartic experience for him. He didn't have a sequel in mind whatsoever. And yet, The Black Phone 2 finished filming at the end of January. What happened?
Well, part of it has to do with Derrickson's new film, The Gorge, which debuts Feb. 14 on Apple TV+. The Miles Teller and Anya Taylor-Joy movie is a genre-blending concoction that works as both a wild horror movie and a sweet romance that represents dating in modern times.

Now, ahead of the movie's release, Derrickson is breaking down how his new horror flick took a few cues from a couple of hit video games.

In my recent interview with Scott Derrickson about his upcoming film The Gorge, the filmmaker teased The Black Phone 2, which wrapped production last month in Toronto.
It was Joe Hill, author of the short story on which The Black Phone is based, who pitched the concept that made Derrickson want to return for a sequel.
“I didn’t feel obliged to make a sequel to that movie. Joe Hill came up with an idea that sparked my interest,” Derrickson tells Bloody Disgusting.
“I realized that if I made a big movie after Black Phone — which is The Gorge — by the time I finished it, all those kids would be in high school. So what I really wanted to do, and what I did, was I shot a high school coming-of-age movie in the same way that the first one was a middle school coming-of-age movie.”

Scott Derrickson, the director of the 2021 horror filmThe Black Phone, is currently in post-production of the upcoming sequel, which has a release date of October 17, 2025. Not much is known about the movie at present, but Derrickson has now shared some plot details that solve one of the important mysteries of The Black Phone 2: When exactly does the horror outing take place?
Derrickson spoke to Screen Rant recently and, according to the director, he won't avoid the fact that time has passed since the first movie, or the fact that the young cast have grown. The Black Phone focuses on 13-year-old Finney Blake as he's abducted by the Grabber, a serial killer with a twisted affinity for masks. Considering The Black Phone 2 is focusing on some of the same characters, the age difference may have been a challenge, but Derrickson has a plan...

Superhero movies produced by Marvel Studios have been among the biggest tentpole blockbusters in Hollywood for years. The Marvel Cinematic Universe has largely become ubiquitous with the superhero genre, with its projects often featuring the biggest names in entertainment in various starring roles. With their global reach, Marvel movies can provide their actors with the largest possible audience as far as modern cinema goes. However, not every actor has readily accepted the opportunity to join Marvel films, even for the most prominent parts in the MCU.
Whether due to not particularly connecting with the material or matters outside of their control, numerous A-list actors have turned down Marvel movie roles. In some cases, these actors have then gone on to appear in films based on Marvel's biggest competition, DC Comics. With actors rejecting some of Marvel's most important characters, the MCU would've looked very different if some of its planned castings panned out as intended.

Why did Jessica Chastain reject Iron Man 3? ( Photo Credit – Instagram )
Wondering Why Jessica Chastain turned down Iron Man 3? She explained on her Facebook page in 2012, “Sorry to say that Iron Man 3 isn’t going to work out. My schedule is jammed packed and I can’t fit anything else in.” Fair play, Jessica. Your schedule’s clearly crazier than Stark’s lab.
In fact, it wasn’t just a quick “no.” She apologized to her fans: “I know many of you wanted me to be involved, and I’m so sorry to disappoint you.” But hey, Chastain’s not about playing second fiddle—not even to Tony Stark. So, no Maya Hansen for her. Rebecca Hall stepped in instead.

While the upcoming anthology based on Stephen King's The Stand is exciting enough in its own right, it features a reunion that makes it all the better. The anthology, titled The End of the World As We Know It, will be a first for Stephen King. In it, a collection of notable horror writers will come together to pen stories not just inspired by, but set in the world of The Stand. The authors included in the Stephen King-inspired anthology have inspired great confidence that it will be excellent, if an interesting and slightly risky experiment.

The Gorge, a new high-concept sci-fi horror romance (we're ticking quite a few boxes here) movie directed by Scott Derrickson, is set to premiere on Apple TV+ on February 14, and the first trailer has now been released online.
The film stars Miles Teller and Anya Taylor-Joy as two elite snipers who accept positions on either side of a mysterious gorge.
Teller's character (Levi) is told he's there to guard the gate to Hell (whether he means literally or metaphorically remains to be seen), and that he is to have no contact with the sniper in the opposite tower (Taylor-Joy's Drasa).
Of course, they eventually begin to communicate and strike up something of a medium-distance relationship, and when Levi falls while attempting to cross to the other side, Drasa straps on a parachute and follows him down.
"We really tried to be there for each other because we get along really well,...
