“Cross” star Samantha Walkes says filming the Season 1 finale of the hit Prime Video series was a “beautiful” collaborative experience between the cast and crew.

“We all sit at that table in the cabin [where] me and the kids [were],” Walkes, who plays Elle Monteiro, began, saying it was the episode’s director Carl Seaton who wanted to bring everyone together for the creative brainstorm. “We sat there for like an hour discussing what we think needs to happen how this needs to play out, what this should look like, what should it sound like, what are the things that thrill us, that are hiccups that we don’t understand? Are there holes in the script?”

“It has to do with [director] Carl Seaton and the way that he directs. He loves discussion,” Walkes continued. “We would just swap off, and it was a very collaborative experience. It was beautiful.”

Which is, quite literally, what James Patterson did when executives asked him to re-write his iconic Alex Cross character as a white man. And now Cross television star Aldis Hodge — who plays the titular character — is speaking out about what it means to have kept Alex Cross a Black man.

Speaking with BuzzFeed, Hodge explained that he was "shocked, impressed, and proud" when he heard the author of the wildly successful Alex Cross novels was asked by some Hollywood executives to sign a seven-figure deal — but only if he changed the character's race to white.

All eight episodes of the show’s first season (it’s already been renewed for a second installment) premiered Nov. 14.

The 40 million worldwide viewers makes Cross the No. 3 premiere for a Prime Video series this year over a 20-day span. It trails only Fallout — which, according to the Amazon-owned streamer, had 65 million viewers in 16 days — and The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, whose second season (three episodes of it, anyway) racked up 40 million viewers in its first 11 days.

Amazon also says the launch of Cross puts it in the top six of all Prime Video series over its first 20 days.

“Cross,” the Aldis Hodge-led series based on James Patterson’s “Alex Cross” novels, hit 40 million viewers in its first 20 days of streaming, according to Amazon.

The streamer says that this total makes “Cross” its third-biggest season premiere of 2024, following only “Fallout” Season 1 and “The Rings of Power” Season 2. Though 20-day totals for those series have not been made available, Amazon previously reported that “Fallout” crossed 65 million viewers in 16 days and that “The Rings of Power’s” second outing crossed 40 million viewers in 11 days (which increased to 55 million after one month).

Additionally, Amazon says that “Cross” is Prime Video’s third-biggest series launch and sixth-biggest season launch of all time, accounting for 20 days of viewership for all titles. 55% of its audience comes from outside of the United States, with Germany, the U.K., Brazil, Canada and Spain in particular seeing “outsized performance.”

For reference, Fallout commanded more than 65M viewers within 16 days of viewing, while Rings of Power Season 2 hit the 40M mark in 11 days.

It’s unclear exactly how Prime Video is quantifying “viewers,” since there is no way for the streamers to determine exactly how many people are watching via a single stream, or if anyone is watching at all. It’s possible that the company is using active sub households to arrive at this number, like Paramount Global does, but Amazon declined to provide guidance when asked.

Aldis Hodge's Alex Cross isn't leaving Prime Video anytime soon. Ben Watkins, the creator and showrunner of Cross, has shared a major update on the crime thriller series' future on the Amazon streamer.

Speaking with Collider, Watkins was asked for an update on Season 2 of Cross, which was confirmed by the streamer in April 2024. "Season 2 is actually filmed. I'm gonna go ahead and give you a spoiler because, fuck it. We started the [writers'] room back in November, we started filming in April, we finished production in September, and we're actually in post-production on Season 2," Watkins revealed. "Each season is a book for me. They're all based on new mysteries. Season 1 is Hero Complex, and Season 2 is called Bitter Fruit.

There is a lot that remains faithful to the books, including the inclusion of Alex’s best friend, John Sampson. This character was missing from the movies, and showrunner Ben Watkins made it clear it was important to include him. After all, there are layers that come with this character.

Many will question Alona Tal’s Kayla Craig, whose name is similar to Kyle Craig. Is this just a gender swap of this character, or is it someone else entirely? That’s something we definitely need a second season to find out.

There was a lot going on in the eight episodes of Cross season 1. None of the episodes disappointed, and neither did the outcomes of the storylines.

Today, Prime Video returned to New York Comic Con with a panel for the Cross series, the pulse-pounding thriller based on the characters from James Patterson’s best-selling Alex Cross books.

In a first-look video of “Cross” for Amazon’s Prime Video, star Aldis Hodge’s hero Alex Cross secures a murder suspect’s confession with an assist from William Shakespeare — specifically, the Bard’s famous tragedy, “Macbeth.”

The clip opens with Alex staring detainee Ed Ramsey (Ryan Eggold) in the face after a tense exchange in the interrogation room. “You thought you were special,” Alex says to Ed, who is glaring back at Alex with steel in his eye.
