Call the Midwife season 13 will likely premiere in early 2024. Viewers can explore other shows like Downton Abbey and The Crown for their period drama fix. Land Girls, Anne with an E, and Outlander offer compelling stories and strong female characters, similar to Call the Midwife.
The long-running BBC television series Call the Midwife is showing no signs of slowing down. The British broadcast network renewed the show through 15 seasons, meaning that it will be on the air for at least three more years following the release of season 12 in 2023. Still, viewers will have to wait for the thirteenth season, which will likely premiere sometime in 2024, and in the meantime, they can either rewatch the first 12 seasons, which is a viable option, or they can check out ten other shows that contain similar premises to Call the Midwife.

Honoring the past with powerful and emotional narrative fiction has been a long honored tradition amongst societies around the world. That’s certainly true with the British, who created the drama series, ‘Land Girls,’ to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the outbreak of the Second World War. The award-winning television show, which was created by Roland […]

London, May 2: Twins Amy and Katie from Ireland were incredibly born 87 days apart.
Mum Maria went into labour four months early, giving birth to Amy - but Katie did not arrive until three months later.
Their incredible births will now become a Guinness World Record for the "longest interval between the birth of twins," the Mirror reported.
The previous record is 84 days.
Doctors have told Maria and husband Chris they have achieved the medical equivalent of winning the lottery, with both girls surviving and healthy.
Maria, who has two other children, told how she was torn between joy and worry after Amy's dangerously.

People in horror movies do the darndest things, don't they? We've all had a "Don't go in there, you idiot!" moment or twelve while watching fright flicks. Horror sure does bring out the stupids.
This counter-intuitive behavior makes it seem like these folks are handing over their lives on a silver platter, so in honor of this weekend's "Evil Dead" let's celebrate the good, the bad and the dumber-than-a-bag-of-hammers of the genre. Appropriately enough, our first entry comes from that franchise.

Shortland Street (New Zealand)
This is proof that I can’t be everywhere. I had no idea that New Zealand nighttime soap Shortland Street had a gay couple on the show. I’m not sure on all the details of the storyline, but it seems that Seth came on as part of a hostile hopital takeover. There’s been lots of drama and political maneuvering because of it. Seth's business competitor Sarah knows that he’s gay, and it looks like she's about to out him.
The biggest question I have is: what year is this? I mean, it’s 2013. It’s seems so dated to have Seth staying in the closet and hiding his boyfriend to protect his career. I realize that this does still happen, but Seth is not a professional athlete, a big film star, a politician or anything high-profile like that, so...

Today we are highlighting a riveting documentary tracing the creation of a handful of original musicals, from collaborators meeting for the first time through to conception, creation, execution and actual onstage enacting before a live, paying audience, featuring a seriously talented assortment of Broadway and Hollywood stars. From behind-the-scenes creatives involved - like A Christmas Story composers Benj Pasek amp Justin Paul as well as recent InDepth InterView participant Lance Horne - to Broadway and West End onstage talent such as Cheyenne Jackson, Mandy Gonzalez, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Roger Bart, Richard Kind, Rachel Dratch, Summer Strallen, Tamara Tunie, Michael Longoria and many more, One Night Stand offers a rare glimpse into a world many of may be fascinated or intrigued by, but which little light has ever been shone - that is, until now. Tracing the creation of four musicals from the ground up over such a short, intense period of time,...

River City
I really enjoyed this past week’s River City. First of all, I have to admit that Robbie and Will are growing on me as a couple. No, you won’t see me going all fangirl on them, but I like them much more than I used to. I also think that the pairing has really suited Robbie as a character and has helped to ground and mature what used to be a really flighty and sometimes annoying character. He still can be flighty and annoying, but his relationship with Will has fleshed the character out and softened his more bothersome traits.
I continue to love that River City has this gay couple in lead stories that usually isn’t about them being gay. Yes, Will’s father disapproves of his son's relationship with Robbie, but their lives and stories are much bigger than...

Dancing on Ice contestant Samia Ghadie has said that her split from Coronation Street co-star Will Thorp is nothing to do with Sylvain Longchambon. The actress, who plays Maria Connor in the ITV soap, separated from Thorp (Chris Gray) before Christmas, around the same time that her Doi partner Longchambon apparently confessed to having feelings for her and left his girlfriend, Hollyoaks star Jennifer Metcalfe.

You know, just once I would like a TV show to have gay characters who don’t want children. It just seems like gays on TV always want kids. I guess it’s a way of telling viewers that gay folks want homes and families just like straight folks and having kids does open up plenty of storytelling for television shows, but for me I’d like to see something different because even without marriage and kids, there are plenty of other compelling stories to be told. I also think it’s very soon for Will and Robbie to be talking about kids since they’ve only been married for a few weeks.
To be honest, I was surprised that Will agreed with Robbie about starting a family. I expected this to be a source of conflict between them. So I’m wondering...

My favorite moment of this week came when Eileen, after the truth about Maria and Marcus had been revealed, told them that they were selfish idiots who had hurt a lot of people with their deception. She spoke the truth when she predicted this would end in a lot of tears because Marcus would be unable to change who he is, a gay man. I’ve said that from the beginning of this storyline and if that was a foreshadowing moment, I have to say I agree.
As much as I find Maria and Marcus sweet together, I do think that Marcus seems to have ‘adjusted’ to his new life awfully quickly. Yes, he had a brief moment of ‘confusion’, but he got over that fast. And is it just me, or does it seem that now that Marcus is sleeping with Maria, we...

I’ve had my doubts about Will and Robbie’s relationship since the very beginning. They always seemed ill-suited for one another and I never felt they had much spark. And well, there are the incidents of domestic violence between the couple that put me against any future between them.
But this past week, with Will and Robbie getting married, I decided to put my doubts and previous impressions aside, at least for this episode and try and enjoy the story as presented in this particular episode. I found that it was a well-crafted piece of drama, well done in both writing and acting, though I do have a few issues.
I thought it was ridiculous that rather than tell Will about Edwards’ attempts to bribe him, Robbie gets stinking drunk. Clearly this only made the situation worse. Will had no idea what...

Hollyoaks
I liked the idea of the guys getting together for Riley's memorial service, even if Doug and Riley’s friendship was very contrived and never really utilized that often. If I recall correctly, Riley was close friends with Ethan and Noah and Doug was the drug dealing lowlife who moved into Noah’s apartment. Doug and Riley's close bond was an off camera creation of the writer, so their supposed friendship never rang true to me. Still I enjoyed the scenes, even if they were bad manipulations of the plot at best.
But even more contrived was Ally being invited to the memorial. Ally and Riley were not friends and I don’t think they ever had much to do with each other. There was no reason for him to be there other than to stir things up with Ste, when there were other ways to accomplish that.

Every time I watch this show, I wonder if I’m just a "bad gay." There’s a lot of people who don’t like this storyline, saying it’s bad and offensive and sends the wrong message to viewers, that it’s a woman’s fantasy in that if she waits long enough she can turn that gay guy that she’s had her eye on. I suppose those are valid points and yet, I don’t see it that way at all. At least not right now.
I just think there’s lots of story left to be played out so it’s a bit too soon to see if this is a drama about a gay guy going straight (which the show says it isn’t). Now if at the end of this romance, Marcus starts sleeping his way through the...

So... Brendan’s back. Can’t say I really missed him, especially with the way the character has been written these days. I know we’re supposed to feel sorry for Brendan, and that he suffers so, the writing is certainly slanted that way. But having watched the show since Brendan arrived some two years ago and seen all the horrible and horrific things he’s done, sympathy is the last thing he gets from me. I guess I still have those visions of Brendan murdering his grandmother still in my head (not to mention dismembering a body!). I keep asking myself how the show and fans of this character reconcile that murder, but it seems that they all simply pretend it never happened.
As for Cheryl’s anger towards Brendan, she has every reason to be. She did witness him cutting up a body after all.

I guess I shouldn’t be shocked that now that Chris and Aidan are back together, they’d return to their old roles of supporting players in everyone else’s drama. Sadly, we don’t even get any scenes of them enjoying being back together or working to get the point they were before the split as they were nearly living together back then, though Chris did casually mention they were taking things slow. Let’s hope we get some insight to their relationship as it goes forward, though given this show’s history, I have my doubts.
As for the drama we did see, I really find Chris’ endless support of Andrew to be annoying. As Tash and Summer rightfully pointed out, Andrew screwed Chris over and would do it again. And he barely apologized for nearly ruining Chris’ life and almost bankrupting Chris’ family.

I don’t have a lot to say here other that I actually enjoyed this past week’s drama, mostly because of the acting. I really think Sinan Eroglu has done an excellent job showing Bilal’s conflict over his sexuality, he’s probably given the best and strongest performance during this storyline. That final scene between Lucas and Bilal where they said goodbye was nicely done and I like that we’re seeing Lucas be mature enough to accept a situation for what it is, even if he may not like it.
I must admit I didn’t much care for Lucas’ attempt to ambush Bilal with his gay Muslim pal, as I think someone should never be pressured to come out, but I did like that the reality of Bilal’s situation wasn’t sugar coated in that coming out...

EastEnders
I’m kind of torn about this past week’s EastEnders. On one hand, I’m enjoying this final arc for Christian and Syed and I’m looking forward to seeing how it all plays out. It’s really nice to see Christian and Syed in a solid storyline that is actually about them and their relationship. They have gotten very little of that over the past couple of years as the show has allowed them to languish on the backburner, even as they proved to be a very popular and beloved duo. The writers simply, for whatever reason, didn’t want to write for them.
And to me, this storyline shows that when the show actually gives them the material, they can be compelling. I just wish the material was a bit better because I’m not quite sure if I buy Syed’s behavior.

As much as I liked their scenes, Sean’s horrible presence notwithstanding, it’s pretty clear that Aiden and Marcus’ relationship is doomed. Supposedly, they’re dating, but we haven’t seen any of their relationship develop on screen. I’m a big fan of Marcus and I think Aiden is a likeable and engaging character and it would be nice if he was developed and fleshed out. I love how Aiden is just an average bloke who defies the gay stereotypes that someone like Jason wants to put upon him. The scenes with Aiden, Jason, Marcus and Maria have been just adorable.

Frankly, I thought he would only play a minor supporting role in his friends' drama, like he has in much of the time on this show. I never expected Chris to be front and center. I think James Mason has been very good as Chris struggles to deal with what’s happened, though he needs to be a more convincing crier. A few tears might help.
One thing that never changes about this show, however, is that Chris has lousy friends. Both Tash and Summer ragged on Andrew about how selfish he was being, more concerned about his money than Chris’ plight, but neither of them bothered to go with Chris when he went...

One thing that never changes about this show, however, is that Chris has lousy friends. Both Tash and Summer ragged on Andrew about how selfish he was being, more concerned about his money than Chris’ plight, but neither of them bothered to go with Chris when he went...

I’m sorry, but Deek needs to give it a rest where Will is concerned. If he wants to be Robbie’s friend, then he needs to be his friend which doesn’t mean trashing Will every chance he gets. And attacking Will for not getting involved with the business is unfair simply because from what I understood, Will was just giving Robbie the money to buy the salon, he had no intention of actually being involved in running the place.
Yes, Will was preoccupied with his investigation, but his telling Robbie to go to Deek, who has business experience, seems the proper thing to do to me. More and more, Deek comes off as petty and jealous. No, Will isn’t perfect, but he’s not the monster Deek makes him out to be —at least not yet. But then the writing...

The L.A. Complex
Wow. I didn’t see that coming. Frankly though I have to admit I don’t quite buy Kal trying to kill himself. The character just didn’t seem like the type to take things in that direction. Still, it’s pretty compelling drama and Benjamin Charles Watson and Andra Fuller not only have terrific chemistry, but are very talented actors.
Their scenes together are very intense and I thought the moment where Tariq told Kal that he’d never be able to get involved with another man without thinking about the abuse he suffered to be quite powerful. This continues to be a really well done storyline and quite unique in that it features black gay men, which is sadly still a rarity on the gay television canon. I’m very glad this show is back and they’re continuing this compelling story,...

I have to say that the writing on this storyline is really well done and the acting has been terrific. I think it’s interesting how the abuse angle of the story has been handled thus far. For example, this time around Robbie was verbally attacking Will for not being there for him as the court case approached. Robbie was being a drama queen, over the top and quite unfair to Will, who was caught between investigating his big murder case and holding his boyfriend’s hand.
But is Will pushing Robbie aside to get away from his abusive tirade? Or was it simply an accident, something that could happen to any of us in the midst of an argument? If it were a single incident, it would be forgotten and the couple would move forward, but it’s pretty obvious these incidents...

Good Times, Bad Times
When I heard that Gtbt was going to give Lucas a potential new love interest in the form of Bilal, a closeted gay Muslim, I hated the idea. And now that the story has begun to unfold, leading to the badly-played season finale in which Lucas and Bilal kissed, I hate it even more. To be blunt, this is a horrible, clichéd plot on a show that has long had problems with solid and consistent storytelling. I’d taken a hiatus from this show for most of the last season because it was unwatchable. And I’m already thinking of not...

I get where the show is going with this. They are setting it up for Lucas to finally move on with his life after Edwin’s death and eventually find a new love. But it seems like these scenes should have played out months ago, given that Edwin died early this year. Oh well, at least it’s finally happening. I’d like to see Lucas in a new relationship — though judging by the spoilers I’ve seen about Lucas’ possible new romance, maybe I might want Lucas to grieve a little bit longer. But we’ll discuss that in a future column. For now, let’s stick with the events of this week’s show.

It’s been a while since I watched this show. Readers know I’ve had a long love-hate relationship with this glossy Dutch soap as the writing has always been hit or miss for me. And since the show killed off Lucas’ boyfriend Edwin a few months ago, I’ve really not cared for Lucas’ various adventures since, yet I still think killing off Edwin was the right idea. I liked the character, but he and Lucas and their pairing had gone as far as things could and it was time to move on. Anyway, I caught last week’s episodes and as usual, the writing is still hit or miss.
I liked the concept, but its execution just didn’t work for me. I felt that Lucas was being written out of character. It was not in his sleeping around with various men,...

Dangerous Relationships
Is this show still on? It would seem so, despite reports that the show was going to die an early death. Guess those reports were erroneous. Still, things haven’t changed for Alejandro and Diego with most of their relationship advancing off screen and the show continuing to avoid most physical contact between them.
I’m still not seeing why these two have anything to do with each other. Diego continues to treat Alejandro with little more than disgust and while Diego is clearly initiating the off screen kisses, we only get to see him treating Alejandro like trash afterwards, leaving us to wonder why Alejandro, who is a good kid, is putting up with it. The show hasn’t given us any reason why they should be together other than they’re the only two gay kids at that school, which of course is implausible.

Offspring
I’m sad to see Andrew leave Offspring, especially since I’d just discovered the character and this show, but at least he’s getting a happy ending. Now that doesn’t matter to me, but I know it does to a lot of people, who think, rightfully or wrongly, that things always end badly for gays on television. I do hope he comes back, if only to continue to help his brother and his wife father their baby, a story with potential. Though personally, I’d rather have Andrew and Tim have an off screen breakup and Andrew come back to the show on a permanent basis. And I did like Mick and Andrew’s goodbye. I’ve enjoyed their sibling relationship as it grew and flourished over the past several months, maybe even as much as Andrew’s romance with Tim.

It's time to 'put on your top hat and brush off your tails' 77 years after Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers lit up Hollywood's silver screen with one of the greatest dance musicals of all time, Rko Pictures' Top Hat is now on in London's West End! Judging by the sensational reviews, standing ovations and sold out theatres around the country on its pre-London tour, it has been well worth the wait. Tom Chambers (Holby City heartthrob and Strictly Come Dancing winner) plays the irrepressible Broadway sensation Jerry Travers who dances his way across Europe to win the heart of society model Dale Tremont, played by triple Olivier Award nominee Summer Strallen (Love Never Dies, The Sound of Music, The Drowsy Chaperone). Packed full of Irving Berlin's greatest hits, such as Let's Face the Music and Dance, Cheek to Cheek, Puttin' (more)...

I’ve loved a lot of gay characters over the years and Brendan Brady is probably one of my favorites. Because of his dark history and edgy style he’s unique among gay soap characters in just about every respect, and I like that the show takes chances with this bad boy. And it goes without saying that actor Emmett Scanlan is brilliant in the role. But I haven’t been happy with the way he’s been written for the past several months, mostly because it’s the same material we’ve already been through with Brendan, giving the character little chance for growth and leaving the continuing impression the show isn’t sure how to write for him.
I had hoped we might see something fresh for this character when Ash decided to do a thesis on Brendan. It looked as if the...

Dangerous Relationships
There’s not much to say here as there was really no movement in the Alejandro/Diego storyline. In fact, they didn’t have any scenes together last week other than Alejandro flashing back to the kiss that we didn’t see. But we did get to see lots of Diego kissing his girlfriend and bragging about his sexual prowess. Thanks, show! Now, obviously Diego was overcompensating because of Alejandro’s revealing the kiss to Nora, but it’s still not clear whether Diego remembers it. But what is clear is that Hector does at least suspect that Diego might be gay. His surprise and relief that his son had a girlfriend was quite telling.
Let’s hope Nora doesn’t count on Diego always being there for her…

Blood Relatives
I’m having a problem connecting to this show because despite all the emotional turmoil in the lives of these characters, their reactions seem awfully muted. We finally got some reaction about the loss of his child from Oscar, and I thought the scene where he lamented he’ll probably never have another chance to have a baby was well done. But overall, I don’t get a sense of true loss from him.
And Thomas doesn’t seem to have any sort of reaction to this at all. He and Oscar are supposedly lovers and were planning this new life together with this baby, but they really haven’t discussed what happened. In fact, I really can’t recall any scenes of them interacting as a couple. And that seems unrealistic to me, as if there are beats in the story that are missing.

Florian got some bad news about Roman..
As I said last week, I can’t bring the clips of this storyline to you, but I did want to discuss it as it's an important arc for one of the most beloved TV gay couples. To begin, to my surprise, I’m really enjoying this storyline. Last week’s episodes detailing Roman's impending doom were terrific. The writing for this story has been unusually strong for this generally fluffy soap, and the acting is outstanding, especially by Igor Dolsgatschew, who plays Deniz.
The scene where Deniz begged Roman to tell Florian about his illness and then talked about his own feelings about losing the man he loves had me misting up as much as the actor. Dennis Grabosch as Roman was good, but I was really taken by his co-star's work. Dolsgatschew has...

What to wear at the catwalk shows? Stick with your pyjamas – and avoid at all costs anything designed by Rachel Zoe
I'm going to Paris fashion week for the first time. What should I wear?
Maria, London
Ah, Paris fashion week. Dieu bless you, mademoiselle, with your way of forcing people to wait for hours in the freezing fricking cold until Alexa Chung, Kate Moss and other luminaries take their seats and shine their gilded light upon some designer. Oui, Paris fashion week, I know thee well.
As such, what to wear for it is my Mastermind specialist subject. To start, pyjamas are de rigueur. Layer on top of that your duvet, bien sûr. And pour the final pièce de résistance, accessorise your look with your hotel bed and stay there for the duration thereof. Alternatively, if you're looking to vary your look (and every look needs a bit of variety to keep it fresh!

With Scott Pilgrim vs. The World off to build its cult following on DVD and Blu-ray, writer/director Edgar Wright is now turning his attention to the Marvel superhero movie, Ant-Man. Wright recently spoke with 24 Frames about the film and said that he's now writing the script with The Adventures of Tintin collaborator Joe Cornish. However, Ant-Man, due to his relative anonymity in the mainstream, doesn't have to stand as a Marvel tentpole: "This one's not about about the urgency of summer tentpoles and things going into production without a script," said Wright, who approached Marvel with the "Ant-Man" idea. "It's slightly different than that." Wright previously stated he wants the Ant-Man to be "a shrinking film about a bad-ass secret agent." For those unfamiliar with the character, hit the jump. Also, if you're in Los Angeles, be sure to check out Wright's new film series at the New Beverly,...

Gary Lucy was determined to work a superman move into his high flying routine on tonight’s Dancing On Ice final and by doing it he fulfilled one of his childhood dreams.
The former Hollyoaks star took to the air for his first routine of the night and we thought he was a little more graceful than Kieron Richardson but messed up some of his transitions and at one point we thought he was going to drop his partner Maria.
Judges Comments:
Score: 24.5
Karen: I will be honest. The beginning of the week was a nightmare for all of us, not just you. But we looked at each other, Jane and I and we said “How did that happen?” Suddenly, you got it all together and it was fantastic.
Jason: We still are in a competition and there were obviously things that were wrong with that. I’ll give you some credit,...

Dancing On Ice contestants Gary Lucy and Kieron Richardson have hit back at show judge Jason Gardiner, after he branded them both as pillocks ahead of this Sunday’s final.
Saying that if he were a judge in a court of law, he’d be struck off for lack of impartiality, Gary Lucy told The Sun
“It’s difficult to explain to your little ‘un when she’s crying her eyes out why that man’s being so mean to her daddy.
“I’ve got broad shoulders and can take the criticism and personal jibes but when your kid is affected it’s hard.”
Criticisms
“If this was a court of law, he’d be struck off, put it that way. Judges should be impartial.
“Once the show is over, I certainly won’t miss him not being in my life.”

Former Hollyoaks actor Gary Lucy always bores me a little on the ice. Technically he’s not a bad skater, but his performances are always a little stilted and slow and lack the energy that other contestants like Hayley bring to the ice.
After last week’s dancing disaster I didn’t hold out much hope for Gary and his walking stick prop tonight and I hate the song Hit Me With Your Rhythm Stick. However, although the routine was naturally quite stilted because of the props, the duo actually pulled off some intricate moves. Gary even managed to pull off last week’s required spin which he forgot to do last Sunday!

Hello Dancing On Ice fans! Last week we lost Sharron Davies after she ignored the advice of the verable Messrs Torvill and Dean. We hope her shoulder is recovering Only 7 skating couples remain – and with most of the weaker competition eliminated at this point, will Emily Atack finally fall foul of the public vote.
But first, this week’s Hollywatch – she’s wearing a glamorous frock as usual, but it looks like the dress has slipped down about four inches from where it should be. Not that I’m complaining, ladies and gentlemen, I’m a big supporter of Holly’s cleavage…
The show is opened by a beautiful routine by Torvill and Dean with music provided by Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber and Katherine Jenkins. They’re joined by the professional skaters waving flowing white flags.
Scoreboard Hayley Tamaddon and Daniel Whiston – 25.5 Daniella Westbrook and Matthew Gonzalez – 22.0 Danny Young and...
