Now that Kraven the Hunter has ended its disastrous theatrical run, the Marvel film is getting its second wind during its streaming debut. Starring Aaron Taylor-Johnson as the title character, it earned a total gross of $24 million domestically and $60 million globally against a speculated budget of $110 to $130 million.
Recently, however, Kraven the Hunter's official X account revealed that the movie had topped the charts on Apple TV:

Newly released concept art showcases a scrapped sequence from Kraven the Hunter that would have tied in with the Venom trilogy. Initially, Kraven the Hunter was set to debut before Venom: The Last Dance, which may have partially contributed to the scene being removed from the final cut of the film.

The following contains spoilers for Kraven the Hunter, now playing in theaters, as well as other Sony superhero movies.
It wasn't hard to predict the Sony Spider-Man Universe wouldn't make a big splash in the long run. Many were optimistic and hopeful, because the more comic book movies out there, the better. But without Spider-Man as the linchpin, these superhero movies and villain origins lacked the anchor needed to build momentum and resonance.
Peter Parker is the glue that webs all of these largely obscure characters together in the source material. Additionally, it's been reported that Kraven the Hunter is the final entry of this shared universe for the time being, and it's not hard to see why. The critics aren't pleased, and audience members aren't seeing anything worthwhile. But out of Sony's entire output, which movies are the bigger disappointments?

There have been many great Marvel and DC movies over the years, but it is true that some films missed the mark, though even a few of those who did not succeed still featured exciting fight scenes. Marvel and DC have a bright future ahead. The McU's upcoming movies include a pair of Avengers films, Spider-Man 4, and more. As for DC, James Gunn's DC Universe has films like Superman, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, and more on the way.
However, both franchises — and others — have produced a number of projects that did not work quite as expected. From the Spider-Man franchise to the old Dceu to more, both Marvel and DC have had their fair share of films that struggled at the box office or with critics. Kraven the Hunter did not have the reception that Sony Pictures had been hoping for, to say the least. Alessandro Nivola, who played the movie's incarnation of Rhino, has opened up about how the film performed.
Per The Hollywood Reporter, Nissola suggested that the issue with Kraven the Hunter that may have contributed to its downfall was perhaps too many people involved with the project behind the scenes. From his own vantage point, the actor had a great time working on the film, so much so that it never occurred to him that there were going to be problems. He also said he didn't check out many reviews about the movie personally, though he'd learned about how a lot of them were giving praise to his performance in the film, even if the reviews were otherwise very negative.

Quick Links What 'Kraven the Hunter's Failure Says About the Sony Universe Where Does the Sony Universe Go From Here?
The disappointing reception to Sony's latest Kraven the Hunter might be the final stab they get at ever making this strange Spider-Man villain world work. It's probably for the best after all this time and so many sub-par disconnected attempts. The reason why their universe failed is down to more than just superhero fatigue; it's a more specific understanding of what makes an 'anti-hero' story work. Their projects have been tonally jumbled from the start, and Kraven the Hunter hopefully providing Sony with their last gasp is an ultimately telling sign of so much more wrong with modern filmmaking nuance in the mainstream.

The success of Kraven the Hunter may well hold the future of one of Hollywood’s most enduring franchises in the balance. This is, of course, not referring to the Spider-Man universe. Kraven the Hunter has finally arrived in theaters, not with a glorious roar but a meager whimper. Initially set to be released on January 13, 2023, Kraven the Hunter arrives nearly two years later. Critics have panned the film, and it is looking at one of the lowest opening weekends for a movie based on a comic book. Kraven the Hunter stars Aaron-Taylor Johnson as the titular character, who is reimagined as a vigilante hunter of men instead of animals.
Despite Kraven the Hunter being a Spider-Man villain, like the other films in the misleading Spider-Man Shared Universe, the character is not present or even mentioned. In place of Spider-Man, Kraven the Hunter is filled with other Spider-Man-related characters, including Calypso, Rhino, and The Foreigner.

Aaron Taylor-Johnson has stepped into his third Marvel Comics character with the recent release of Kraven the Hunter. Throughout his over two-decade career, Taylor-Johnson has proven to be a versatile actor with diverse roles and admitted he needed convincing to join 2015's Avengers: Age of Ultron.
As part of his press tour to promote Kraven the Hunter, Aaron Taylor-Johnson got to look back at his past roles, which also include his stint as Quicksilver in the MCU. The actor made his superhero debut in 2010's Kick-Ass, which was not part of the MCU but based on a Marvel comic book, and later appeared in Age of Ultron. However, he admitted during an interview on the Happy Sad Confused podcast that he didn't jump at the opportunity right away.

Spoiler Alert: Spoilers follow for Kraven the HunterSony’s extended Spider-Man universe is ending not with a bang, but a whimper. Following on the heels of the widely mocked one-two punch that was Morbius and Madame Web, as well as multiple delays, this weekend sees the release of Kraven the Hunter. Anyone hoping this would turn Sony’s luck around is mistaken; the film currently boasts a 14% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and is currently projected to open to a pitiful $15 million.
This, coupled with the recent announcement that Sony plans to redirect its focus onto Tom Holland’s Spider-Man, makes it clear that their planned cinematic universe is effectively dead. Much like with Dark Phoenix for Fox and Aquaman 2 for the Dceu, it feels like a particularly unceremonious farewell, especially seeing as Kraven ends by setting up a sequel we’ll almost certainly never see. Nonetheless, we’re breaking down the film’s ending,...

Before he became Kraven the Hunter in Sony's Spider-Man Universe, Aaron Taylor-Johnson had two other comic book roles. He played Dave Lizewski in the 2010 adaptation of Marvel Comics' Kick-Ass, and Pietro Maximoff/ Quicksilver in 2015's Avengers: Age of Ultron.
In an interview with IMDb following the most iconic fight sequences in his career so far, Aaron Taylor-Johnson looked back to his time in the MCU and working with Elizabeth Olsen. The two played the Maximoff siblings in the second Avengers film, but Olsen and Taylor-Johnson had also worked together in 2014's Godzilla, where they played husband and wife. Taylor-Johnson's Quicksilver died in Age of Ultron and didn't return to the MCU and the actor had a very important question for Olsen.

'Give the Fans What They Want': Kraven the Hunter Star Says Kraven Should Face Spider-Man in the MCU

Kraven the Hunter marks the sixth entry in Sony's Spider-Man Universe, which adapts the stories of several popular characters from the comic books. However, similar to the previous entries, the film's web-slinger is nowhere to be seen.
During Kraven the Hunter's world premiere in New York, Ariana DeBose, who plays Calypso in the upcoming Ssu entry, addressed a universal thought: that Kraven should get a chance to face Spider-Man, per Variety. To do so, he would have to slip into the MCU, something Tom Hardy's Venom is rumored to do in the upcoming Spider-Man 4. So far, none of the spinoff films directly faced Tom Holland's Spider-Man.

Kraven the Hunter star Aaron Taylor-Johnson is optimistic fans will still want to see more of his lead character...even if Sony Pictures is seemingly giving up. After years of directors like Sam Raimi, Marc Webb, and Jon Watts trying to get Kraven the Hunter in a Spider-Man movie, Sony has instead decided to give the Spider-Man foe his own origin movie in the style of Venom and Morbius. Taylor-Johnson was cast as Kraven the Hunter in summer 2021, and after multiple release date delays, the film is finally set to hit theaters. Yet the fanfare has been little to non-existent.
At the premiere of Kraven the Hunter in New York, Aaron Taylor-Johnson told The Hollywood Reporter that he believes fans who go out to see the film will be left wanting more, hinting at a sequel that seemingly might never come. He put the ball in the fans court saying:...

Now that Kraven the Hunter has hit theaters, Aaron Taylor-Johnson has addressed the possibility of reappearing in a future crossover movie within Sony's Spider-Man Universe. Kraven the Hunter is one of the foremost figures in Spider-Man's iconic rogues' gallery and the latest to be given a live-action origin story by Sony in Kraven the Hunter. Sony's Spider-Man movies are ostensibly interconnected, teasing the notion that Venom, Morbius, Madame Web and Kraven will at some point band together and finally star opposite the web-slinger himself.
Aaron Taylor-Johnson remains hopeful that this is a possibility, stating in an interview with CinePOP that he would love to star alongside other villains in a Sinister Six adaption. This team-up was first teased in the Morbius post-credits scene as the McU's Adrian Toomes/Vulture approaches Morbius and suggests a team-up. Kraven the Hunter bursts into theaters as the next installment in Sony’s Spider-Man Universe, before the movie makes its way to digital and streaming releases. Kraven the Hunter depicts an origin story for the eponymous Spider-Man foe, brought to life by MCU alumni, Aaron Taylor-Johnson. The movie boasts the villain’s live-action debut, and the pressure is certainly on. Following the disappointing performances of Morbius and Madame Web, much of the Ssu’s future hinges on Kraven the Hunter’s box office performance.
The Ssu’s Kraven the Hunter follows Sergei Kravinoff, whose complicated relationship with his father compels him into becoming the greatest and most feared hunter the world has ever seen. We won't say we told you so... but we told you so, Sony. That's right, another flop from Sony's efforts to capitalize on their piece of Marvel IP is already underway. Kraven the Hunter, the next and apparently last installment in Sony's Spider-Man villain universe, hasn't even made its official theatrical debut and is already not looking too hot. Ahead of its release, reviews are piling in and reminding Sony of its recent dark past.
It seems that Kraven the Hunter is following the path of Sony's past flops, failing to please audiences. At the time of this writing, it is sitting at 14% on Rotten Tomatoes. To put that into context, the worst-reviewed movies in the series thus far are Madame Web and Morbius, which have earned 11% and 15% from critics, respectively. The disappointing reactions come after director J.C. Chandor begged audiences to give his film a shot, despite Sony's past failures.

Aaron Taylor-Johnson isn't new to superhero movies, having played the McU's Quicksilver in 2015's Avengers: Age of Ultron, but Kraven the Hunter is his first opportunity to lead one, and while he turns in an entertaining performance, the latest installment of Sony's Spider-Man Universe never lives up to its potential. Previously, the movies in Sony's Spider-Man Universe have been a mixed bag. While Tom Hardy's Venom films have been generally well-received and done solidly at the box office, Jared Leto's Morbius and Dakota Johnson's Madame Web bombed in every way a movie possibly can.
For Kraven the Hunter, director J.C. Chandor took some big swings. The movie is violent enough to earn an R rating, which already puts it at odds with typical superhero fare. Most movies might earn a PG-13 rating for sci-fi violence, but ultimately they remain relatively family-friendly. Kraven the Hunter, however, features...

Kraven the Hunter is set to release in theaters on Dec. 13. It will mark the third film in Sony's Spider-Man Universe released this year after Madame Web and Venom: The Last Dance.
However, Sony will pause the spinoff films after Kraven the Hunter, which also marks the first R-rated film in the universe, per TheWrap. So far, the Spider-Man Universe has failed to bring the numbers Sony hoped for. The only big success was the Venom trilogy, but the numbers slightly dropped with each installment.

Kraven the Hunter is set to hit theaters soon, and this latest Sony Spider-Man Universe project looks to be the most violent one yet. Set to the tune of Johnny Cash's The Man Comes Around, the bloody red-band trailer for the film featured all sorts of animalistic action. In between all the bloodshed were hints at a larger family dynamic with the Kravinoffs, Kraven's family, who will no doubt play an integral role in the story and origin of the character.

Kraven the Hunter director J.C. Chandor has recently begged fans to forget about the previous struggles of Sony to deliver their Marvel movies, and to give this Decembers release a chance to live or die on its own merits. It seems that so far those pleas are falling on deaf ears, as the first projections for the films opening weekend in two weeks' time are worrying, to say the least. According to figures from Box Office Pro, the Aaron Taylor-Johnson movie will land a $20-25 million domestic opening, which puts it below the $39 million taken by Morbius and incredibly close to the dismal six-day opening of Madame Web in the same ballpark.
