Ambition in film doesn't get enough credit these days – maybe because it's so rare. But the daring of writer-director Robin Swicord is all over Wakefield. Based on a 2008 short story by E.L. Doctorow (and before that, an 1835 tale from none other than Nathaniel Hawthorne), the film gets whisper-close to Howard Wakefield (Bryan Cranston), a New York lawyer who turns his life upside down. He's so fed up with the Groundhog Day-ish sameness of his routine – working in his Manhattan office, commuting home to his wife Diana (Jennifer Garner) and...

As pointed out by Dorian Lynskey, we all should have seen this Kendall Jenner controversy coming. The ill-advised Pepsi ad in which she appears was pulled shortly after its misbegotten premiere, presumably because it angered nearly everyone who saw it (or, less likely, because it managed to end racism in a matter of hours); it was also presaged by the Chemical Brothers’ music video for “Out of Control.” Watch it below and marvel at the similarities.

Pepsi has taken a lot of deserved heat over its controversial new ad featuring Kendall Jenner that critics said co-opted real-life political movements. But it could have avoided this mess if it had paid attention to a 1999 music video by the electronic dance band The Chemical Brothers, in which a soda company co-opts a revolution for a commercial. The video, via Pitchfork, is for the 1999 song “Out of Control.” In it, a rebel dressed in fatigues hurls a fictional “Viva” soda bottle (labels out!) at riot breakers, and then the scene literally star wipes to the rebels celebrating...

Kendall Jenner's Pepsi ad is about 15 years too late and it totally misses the point, according to Rosario Dawson, who once used cola to mock soda companies that exploited social injustice. Rosario starred in the Chemical Brothers' video for their 1999 song, "Out of Control" ... in which she plays a revolutionary heroine who makes peace with rioting police by sharing a soda. The video was intended to be a satire on the U.S.

Michel Gondry is back, and he’s brought another dream world with him.
The director has teamed up with FedEx to direct their latest commercial, conveniently titled “Dreams.” As with his Oscar-winning film “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind,” Gondry explores the fantastical ways that our minds operate and the landscapes that we create when we reimagine how the world works. In this case, it comes up with a fanciful explanation of how FedEx is able to deliver packages — full of our heart’s desires for plush toys, killer shoes or electronics — so damn fast.

Ending with a ludicrous freeze-frame straight from an eighties-tastic Us sitcom, this debut feature from director Adam Smith is all over the shop. With little rhyme or reason it veers uncomfortably between gritty family drama, whimsical comedy and full-blown heist thriller. Smith – a frequent collaborator with the Chemical Brothers – never seems to get a complete handle on what he wants the film to be. It’s a shame, as this lack of a clear, concrete vision means powerful moments and committed performances from a cast that includes Michael Fassbender and Brendan Gleeson largely go to waste.
Fassbender is Chad Cutler, a prominent member of a close-knit travelling community currently camped somewhere in the West Country. Their accents are thick as molasses, they call everybody “mush” and afternoons are wiled away by piling into a beat-up station wagon and chasing rabbits through open fields. Since the dawn of the 21st century, action cinema has undergone a bigger change than perhaps any other genre. As the tools with which filmmakers craft their works have continually advanced, a sort of renaissance has begun wherein action films stepped firmly into their own. Often put in the same category as horror — not taken seriously as a form of artistic expression outside of its core fanbase — action has had to boldly announce itself as a viable medium through which big set pieces, but also big ideas, can be presented and explored.

"I'm just trying to look after my family..." Film4 out of the UK has debuted another official trailer for the generational crime drama Trespass Against Us, about a family of criminals who end up battling against each other. The indie film stars Michael Fassbender as a man trying desperately to escape the dangerous criminal world presided over by his savage father, played by Brendan Gleeson. The cast also includes Rory Kinnear, Sean Harris, Lyndsey Marshal, Killian Scott and Georgie Smith. This also features a score by The Chemical Brothers, some of which can be heard in the trailer. It seems like a solid crime thriller with some intense dramatic scenes and entertaining action, but it's oddly being released very quietly later this month by A24 in the Us (see the Us trailer here), which makes me a bit concerned. Have a look. Here's the new UK trailer (+ UK poster) for...

Michael Fassbender will soon star in the action adventure film “Assassin’s Creed,” based on the video game by the same name, but he’s already appeared in many films this past year, including “The Light Between the Oceans,” “X-Men: Apocalypse” and then “Trespass Against Us,” a family drama that premiered earlier this year. “Trespass Against Us” follows three generations of the Cutler family who live as outlaws in their own corner of Britain’s richest countryside. Fassbender plays Chad, an heir apparent to his father Colby (Brendan Gleeson), but soon starts looking for another life as his own son Tyson (Georgie Smith) comes of age. It co-stars Sean Harris (“Prometheus”), Lyndsey Marshal (“The Hours”), Rory Kinnear (“Quantum of Solace”) and more. Watch an exclusive clip from the film below.

Coachella 2017 is still a few months out, but anticipation for its next edition is already running high. With the passing of this year’s festival season follows suit a hunger for a new set of lineups to obsess over, and Coachella is certainly leading the pack in this regard. DJ Snake and DJ Khaled have both leaked their slots on the roster, while a number of alleged headliners like Radiohead, Kendrick Lamar, and Beyonce have also been hinted at.
If the trend of previous years follows suit, Goldenvoice won’t begin to reveal the official lineup until January, and aside from some fairly reliable predictions, we’ll have to wait until then to get a better idea of what to expect from the upcoming event.
As illustrated by a timeline put together by Billboard, the evolution of Coachella’s lineup over the years has seen great changes, but electronic dance...

Brendon Gleeson and Michael Fassbender star, Doctor Who's Adam Smith directors. It's Trespass Against Us...
Does Michael Fassbender sleep? Because he churns out films at a pace that suggests otherwise. And it's not like he's just phoning it in with these performances, either.
The latest Fassbender flick to hit will be Irish family thriller Trespass Against Us, in which Fassbender plays a man caught between his father's wish for him to continue the family outlaw business, and his desire to pass on a different legacy to his young son.
Brendan Gleeson (In Bruges, Calvary) co-stars as Fassbender's character's father and with these two Irish acting powerhouses in one film, Trespass Against Us is already something of a must-see for us.
The film is being helmed by Doctor Who and Skins filmmaker Adam Smith (his Who credits include The Eleventh Hour) and was written by Alastair Siddons.

Blood is a brutal bond. A24 has unveiled a trailer for an indie crime drama from England titled Trespass Against Us, which just premiered at the Toronto Film Festival earlier this month. The film stars Michael Fassbender as a man trying desperately to escape the dangerous criminal world presided over by his savage father, played by Brendan Gleeson. The cast includes Rory Kinnear, Sean Harris, Lyndsey Marshal, Killian Scott and Georgie Smith. Not only does this look like a solid crime thriller with plenty to offer in terms of action and drama, but it also has an "astonishing" score by The Chemical Brothers to top it off. Gleeson, Fassbender and The Chemical Brothers pretty much has me sold no matter what. The car chases look like they might be the best part, but I'm definitely interested in seeing this anyway. A24 has released the trailer for their upcoming crime thriller film, Trespass Against Us, starring Michael Fassbender, Brendan Gleeson, Lyndsey Marshal, and Killian Scott. The film is directed by Adam Smith from a screenplay written by Alastair Siddons.
Trespass Against Us is set across three generations of the Cutler family who live as outlaws in their own anarchic corner of Britain's richest countryside. Chad Cutler (Michael Fassbender) is heir apparent to his bruising criminal father, Colby (Brendan Gleeson) and has been groomed to spend his life hunting, thieving and tormenting the police. But with his own son, Tyson (Georgie Smith) coming of age, Chad soon finds himself locked in a battle with his father for the future of his young family.
When Colby learns of Chad's dreams for another life he sets out to tie his son and grandson into the archaic order that has bound the Cutler family for generations.

It’s clear within the first few minutes of first-time director Adam Smith’s Trespass Against Us — as a muddy Subaru races after a bounding rabbit in the U.K. countryside, with a young boy at the wheel — that the film to follow will be a disorienting experience. Indeed, it’s one that plunges the audience into thematically murky waters. Crime thriller or offbeat family drama? Darkly funny or way too dreary? Trespass has all of these elements, and ultimately, this thick stew is unsatisfying.
Yet the film, which made its long-delayed world premiere at the 2016 Toronto International Film Festival, is no complete miss, either. Stars Michael Fassbender and Brendan Gleeson see to that, aided by music-video vet Smith’s often striking visuals and a unique setting. Trespass just never quite gels into a successful whole. Trespass Against Us opens like it’s an action movie, beginning by throwing you right into the middle of a car chase, or perhaps more accurately, a joy ride. It’s a nice touch for a film that, on paper, sounds like a story that’s been told many times before. Immediately we’re confronted with a family of characters that is lively, compelling, and unsettlingly reckless, but distinctive, allaying fears that this may be material that feels too familiar.
The Cutler family, we eventually learn, are a clan of nomadic thieves, burglarizing wealthy British estates before fleeing home to their caravan of trailers. Their patriarch, Colby, played by Brendan Gleeson, runs the show but with a bit of detachment. He’s past his prime but still the prime holder of power and influence in the group, deciding where the next job will take place, passing on his brand of wisdom to the children,...

The reputation of writer-director Michel Gondry is built more on concepts than characters. His name conjures artistic images: a Chemical Brothers kaleidoscope; Lego White Stripes; the cobbled-together videos of “Be Kind, Rewind”; vanishing reality in “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.” In Gondry’s new film, “Microbe & Gasoline,” he puts people first in a charming if comfortably familiar coming-of-age tale. Two high school boys, chafing at their social-outcast status, build a cautious friendship and eventually take to the back roads of France in a homemade vehicle. Daniel (Ange Dargent) scrawls raw portraits of friends and relatives as he yearns for.

We are going to see a lot of Michael Fassbender in 2016. Fassbender stars in this summer’s X-Men: Apocalypse, and we’ll see him later this year in Terrence Malick’s Weightless, Assassin’s Creed, and possibly Trespass Against Us (which is scored by The Chemical Brothers). Another promising title on his schedule is The Light Between Oceans. Writer/director Derek Cianfrance‘s (The Place Beyond the Pines) adaptation of M.L. Stedman‘s […]

It's contest time again, and this one is quite impressive. We've partnered up with our friends at Well Go USA to present a chance to celebrate the theatrical release of Owen Harris's Kill Your Friends, starring Nicholas Hoult (Mad Max: Fury Road), on April 1 -- that's today! The film takes a look at the late '90s British music industry through the eyes of the savagely ambitious Steven Stelfox (Hoult). Apart from the comparisons to American Psycho, which are definitely appealing, the film also features an amazing soundtrack of BritPop and dance hits from bands like Blur, Oasis, Radiohead, Prodigy, and The Chemical Brothers. Kill Your Friends is based on the critically acclaimed book of the same name by John Niven, who also wrote the...

"Don't be sad, okay?" Chip Baskets' estranged wife Penelope tells him early in tonight's Baskets season finale on FX. "You're not that kind of clown." Penelope (Sabina Sciubba), spoiled daughter of a French singing star, doesn't get the sentiment quite right — and not just because her thick accent renders the name of Chip's chosen profession as "cloon." Chip (Zach Galifianakis) is sometimes a sad clown, sometimes an angry clown, and only occasionally a funny clown — usually when he's not intending to be, like when he gets attacked by one of the bulls at the Bakersfield rodeo where he attempts to practice his art. But Baskets, created by Galifianakis, Jonathan Krisel, and Louis C.K., is very much a sad clown story — a weird little show vibrating at a frequency that only a small subset of viewers are likely to hear and appreciate properly. It presents the broadest of comedy concepts — slapstick,...

Just days after New Order kicked off their U.S. tour in support of new LP Music Complete with a joyous show at New York's Radio City Music Hall, the dance-rock icons visited The Late Show with Stephen Colbert to perform a muscular take on "Singularity," the latest single off the group's first studio album in 10 years.
"As I understand it, is the point at which artificial intelligence overtakes human intelligence," singer Bernard Sumner told Rolling Stone of the song's title. "And then there's 'singularity,' which refers to the beginning of the universe.

Whether its video helmers or stage directors, Sundance has been a reliable launchpad lieu for nouveau British talent — video helmer Fredrik Bond (The Necessary Death of Charlie Countryman) and Rupert Goold (True Story) come to mind. Yet another directorial debut on our predictions list, there is reason to believe that this shot in 2014 crime drama might drop in early 2016. With a background in television (episodes of “Skins” and “Doctor Who”) prior to working on his directorial debut, Adam Smith directed the heavily sensorial and pulsating concert vid Don’t Think. Starring Michael Fassbender and festival fave Brendan Gleeson with a noteworthy trio of supporting players in Sean Harris (a must see in Yann Demange’s ’71), Lyndsey Marshal and Rory Kinnear, Trespass Against Us also employs the service of cinematographer Eduard Grau (Buried/Suffragette) and naturally an original score from The Chemical Brothers.

The Chemical Brothers knocked it out of the park on their recent album, Born in the Echoes – so much so that even the material deemed unsuitable for the effort exceeds expectations. The ’90s big beat legends apparently had more quality music than they knew what to do with, as they’ve released a bonus track to follow up the album in the form of “Wo-Ha.”
Showcasing the less-is-more genius evident in tracks like “Under Neon Lights” and “Just Bang” from their recent effort, “Wo-Ha” succeeds in seeming oddly familiar despite being distinctly a song of its own. Microtonal atmospheric elements compliment a stripped-down drum pattern, and a simple vocal sample contrasts with the dissonance of what melody exists in the arrangement.

I’ll just come right out and say it: Born in the Echoes by The Chemical Brothers is what Daft Punk’s Random Access Memories should have been. Both are celebrity-studded electronic music concept albums intended to boldly defy the movement’s status quo during its meteoric rise in popularity, but where the latter group attempted to do so by traveling back in time, the former accomplished it effortlessly by making music that would logically follow their creative momentum in the wake of their 2010 album Further.
Perhaps one of the most legitimate criticisms of contemporary Edm is that it consists of overly specific genres for each of which a single song or album would suffice – and really, by today’s standards, Born in the Echoes could be expanded to an entire genre in and of itself. Largely defined by the experimental use of antiquated analogue synthesizers, the sound achieved by...

Two legendary acts from entirely different walks of the sonic spectrum have united for perhaps the most beautiful collaboration of 2015. Alternative rockstar Beck and The Chemical Brothers have cast an emotionally rich net for “Wide Open.”
The track employs classic synth sequencing to complement an ethereal atmosphere, all brought together by Beck’s evocative vocals. The British duo has outspokenly addressed the monotony of modern dance music, and are making a pointed comeback to recall the scene’s former beauty. In a brilliant step towards this ideal, “Wide Open” will be part of The Chemical Brothers’ upcoming album, Born in the Echoes, scheduled to release July 24th via iTunes, courtesy of Virgin Emi.

All eyes are on Electric Zoo this year as the long-running New York festival has promised a brand new experience for those in attendance. Being dubbed Electric Zoo: Transformed, ID&T has been brought on board to shake things up and so far, it’s looking like the fest is going to deliver.
The lineup has already been revealed, with headliners like Alesso, The Chemical Brothers and Above & Beyond creating the most buzz, but now we have the full, day by day breakdown of who will be playing when and on which stage.
There’s not really any surprises here, but it’s still nice to see the lineup in a bit more detail as it means we can now start planning our schedules, at least somewhat. And, as usual, it looks like there will definitely be some conflicts.
