The competition continues to heat up on Season 27 of The Voice as the second week of Battle Rounds took place on Monday (March 17), with the coaches faced with more tough decisions. Kelsea Ballerini, Michael Bublé, John Legend, and Adam Levine returned to the famous red chairs to watch their team members fight it out in a series of thrilling performances, but only 12 contestants moved through to the next round. The evening kicked off with Team Legend’s Ari Camille and Bryson Battle facing off in a stunning showdown as they performed “Made for Me” by Muni Long. Legend ultimately picked Battle as the winner, but the journey wasn’t over for Camille, as both Levine and Ballerini hit their Steal buttons. Even though Ballerini gave her best pitch, in the end, Camille chose to join Team Adam and will remain in the competition. Next up was Team Adam’s Hayden Grove and Lucia Flores-Wiseman,...

Our chronic need for self-care can sometimes feel like its own illness. Whether you’re slapping on your daily deodorant or attending a weekly therapy session, “taking care” of yourself means managing the symptoms of being a living-breathing person… forever. It’s annoying, time-consuming, and, in the world of wellness marketing, a lucrative and consumable constant. In “The True Beauty of Being Bitten by a Tick,” filmmaker Pete Ohs examines snake oil culture as a means for exploiting both anxiety and fear.
Co-written by the director/editor/producer and the movie’s four lead actors, this sunny-yet-claustrophobic nightmare asks if the faux “healing” mentality — seen here as a stranger-danger version of a weekend getaway you only think you know — is really what’s making modern people sick. Foregoing the influencer-inspired sheen of something like the beauty thriller “Skincare,” this decidedly strange SXSW premiere follows the grieving Yvonne (Zoë Chao) into...

Wellness culture takes sinister form in “The True Beauty of Being Bitten by a Tick,” a horror-adjacent domestic drama that can’t quite sustain its tongue-in-cheek delights. Directed by Pete Ohs (“Jethica”), and co-written by Ohs and his four lead actors, the ultra-indie SXSW discovery’s wry tone is accompanied by strange characters and even stranger sound design, and yields a wildly enjoyable initial half. However, like its grieving lead character lost in her millennial malaise, it loses itself down a rabbit hole of metaphors.
After Yvonne (Zoë Chao) experiences a personal tragedy — the surprising details of which are hinted at over a phone call, before gradually coming to light — she drives to the isolated, woodland home of her old college friend Camille (Callie Hernandez), only to discover a pair of surprise guests when she expected time alone. Camille’s real estate agent Isaac (Jeremy O. Harris) and his partner A.

For 30 years, the Power Rangers franchise has delivered fun, action-packed series to audiences both young and old. With the long-running continuity of the series, it’s easy to understand why the franchise has managed to maintain an older audience, especially given how much the series focuses on past rangers and nostalgia.
However, the Power Rangers franchise is well-known for being geared towards a younger audience. While some kids' shows, like Avatar: The Last Airbender, managed to create a story suitable for all age groups, most Power Rangers seasons tend to feature a lot of silly moments and oversimplified writing. However, some seasons have stood out as being slightly more mature, allowing both the young audience and adult fans to connect with the series.

Emilia Perez received thirteen nominations for the 2025 Oscars, making it a notably well-regarded film as seen by the Academy, though its wins were limited. One big win was Zoe Saldaña getting the win for Best Supporting Actress, though controversial lead star Karla Sofia Gascon came up short for Best Actress, with Mikey Madison of Anora winning.
It was a night of jokes from host Conan O’Brien, and at one point, he referenced Gascon's controversy involving resurfaced social media posts. He said, "Anora uses the f-word 479 times. That’s more than the record set by Karla Sofia Gascon’s publicist... Karla, if you are going to tweet about the Oscars tonight, my name is Jimmy Kimmel."

Caroline Vignal’s It’s Raining Men follows Iris (Laure Calamy), a Parisian dentist whose stagnant marriage propels her into a whirlwind of app-driven dalliances, blending cheeky humor with poignant introspection.
The film’s premise—middle-aged desire clashing with marital complacency—echoes the French tradition of treating infidelity as a nuanced exploration of human complexity rather than a moral failing. Vignal situates this tale within a cultural landscape where Anglo-American audiences might demand judgment, yet here, the focus remains on Iris’s liberation.
The script nods to classics like Breathless in its breezy defiance of narrative rigidity, though Vignal swaps Godard’s frenetic jump cuts for lush, surreal detours, such as a spontaneous musical sequence set to the titular anthem.
This juxtaposition of grounded realism and whimsical escapism mirrors France’s ambivalence toward tradition and modernity—a tension as relevant in today’s #MeToo era as it was in the heyday of the Nouvelle Vague.

The Oscars are the time where the entire film industry comes together to celebrate cinema, to pay homage to the people making your favorite movies, to do silly little comedy routines in-between awards. But they are also where Hollywood gets to showcase how out of tune it is with the general public, rewarding movies that are controversial at best, and despised at worst.
In 2025, the big controversial Oscar favorite was "Emilia Pérez," a horrendously bad crime musical about a Mexican lawyer who helps a sadistic murderer of a Mexican cartel boss transition into a woman, evading punishment for her crimes by faking her death and assuming a new identity. The film initially premiered at the Cannes Film Festival — an event notorious for ignoring controversies around the filmmakers whose movies they screen, and for awarding highly contentious movies. At the start of Sunday's Oscars, host Conan O'Brien poked fun at Karla Sofía Gascón's highly publicized social media scandal by declaring, "Karla, if you are going to tweet about the Oscars, remember, my name is Jimmy Kimmel." Emilia Pérezhas faced controversy throughout this cinematic awards season, so it's no surprise that the Spanish-language French musical was a hot topic during the Oscars. Despite winning Best Original Song, however, Emilia Pérez director Jacques Audiard declined to discuss the film's numerous controversies and, perhaps most notably, failed to address the transgender community, whose plight is a primary focus of the movie.

Following her Best Supporting Actress win at the Oscars on Sunday night, Zoe Saldaña responded to a Mexican reporter saying Emilia Pérez has been “really hurtful for us Mexicans.”
Speaking to journalists in the Oscars press room, Saldaña defended the controversial film, acknowledging, “That was never our intention. We spoke, we came from a place of love, and I will stand by that. I don’t share your opinion.”
She continued, “For me, the heart of this movie is not Mexico. We weren’t making a film about a country.

Recognition is extremely important for artists who work hard year after year to produce music that resonates with listeners and makes them feel all the feels. And when you’re denied that recognition time and time again, demotivation is just around the corner. Who would know this better than Diane Warren, the songwriter who is yet to add an Oscar to her trophy collection despite being nominated a whopping sixteen times.
Songwriter, Diane Warren | Credits: @dianewarren / Instagram
If you think about it, the odds should’ve been in her favor. After all, you’ve got to win once out of the 16 times you’ve been nominated, right? Unfortunately for Diane Warren, the Academy hasn’t been on her side since 1988.

Although people watching the Oscars broadcast on Sunday night often are waiting for the Best Picture, Actor and Actress categories, there is a reason why host Conan O’Brien shouted out another group of people at the end of his opening monologue.
“The Oscars also shines a light on an incredible community of people you will never see — craftspeople, artisans, technicians, costumers… I can’t name them all, there’re too many,” O’Brien said on stage. “Hardworking men and women behind the camera who have devoted their lives to making film, and yes many people we celebrate tonight are not famous, they’re not wealthy, but they are devoted to a craft that can in moments bring us all a little closer together.”

There was no Oscar crafts juggernaut at the 97th Academy Awards Sunday night, despite both “Wicked” and the embattled “Emilia Pérez” coming in with seven nominations. Instead, the winners were spread out with two Oscars apiece going to “The Brutalist” (cinematography and original score), “Wicked” (costume design and production design), and “Dune: Part Two” (visual effects and sound). This was expected, as they were the standout spectacles demonstrating epic work.
The remainder of the awards went to Best Picture winner “Anora” (editing), “The Substance” (makeup/hairstyling), and “Emilia Pérez”.
‘Flow’ Sideshow and Janus Films
The Oscar for animated feature, meanwhile, was awarded to underdog “Flow” over presumptive favorite “The Wild Robot” from DreamWorks. The wordless cat survival adventure from Latvian director Gints Zilbalodis is not only the second consecutive indie win, it’s also a landmark indie triumph for the category (distributed by Sideshow and Janus Films). Neon’s Anora and its multihyphenate filmmaker Sean Baker were the big winners at the 97th Academy Awards on Sunday night, taking five trophies including Best Picture, Director, Original Screenplay, Editing — all for Baker to set an Oscar record — and Best Actress for Mikey Madison.

You can't separate music from the movies, especially in an Oscar year like this one with two musicals nominated for Best Picture (Wicked and Emilia Pérez). As usual, the Motion Picture Academy incorporated music into Sunday's Oscars telecast, though not always in the usual way.
Wicked stars Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande, both Oscar nominees for their roles, performed the opening number. Grande started things off, appropriately enough, with "Over the Rainbow" from The Wizard of Oz. Erivo followed that with a rendition of "Home." Fans might have revolted had they not dueted during their time on stage together, so they closed the medley with "Defying Gravity"; Grande even stepped aside to let Erivo belt those final notes in the spotlight. They received a standing ovation.
Other artists included on Sunday night were K-pop star Lisa from Blackpink, Grammy winner Doja Cat, and Grammy nominee Raye, who contributed to a...

“We are so grateful,” said Camille, letting out a great “whoo hoo” as she and Clément Ducol accepted the Oscar for Best Original Song for El Mal in Emilia Pérez. “We wrote El Mal as a song to denounce corruption and we hope it speaks to the role that music and art can play and continue to play as a force of the good and progress in the world.”
The pair wrote the music and, in a rare occurrence, shared the lyric credit with Jacques Audiard, director of the much-nominated Netflix musical crime drama
Ducol and Camille are also up for Best Original Score for Emilia Pérez. Saldana, who performs with Karla Sofía Gascón, just won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress.

A viewing of Emilia Pérez, the musical crime thriller nominated for 13 Academy Awards, including Best Picture, is something like a fever dream of dialogue, drama, song, and dance. And perhaps no scene captures the hallucinatory excitement quite like one featuring Zoe Saldaña — who plays Rita, a hard-working lawyer with a unique assignment — performing her signature song from the film’s score, “El Mal,” which received the Oscar for Best Original Song at the 97th Academy Awards.
Directed by Jacques Audiard, with all songs written by French duo Clément Ducol and Camille, the film centers on a Mexican cartel leader’s search for self and handles its musical moments with a technicolor, operatic theatricality — the perfect context for Saldaña, who trained as a dancer before becoming an actor. “The origin of Emilia Pérez lies in the desire for an opera,” explains Audiard of the genre-bending epic. “The hazards of...

“El Mal,” the show-stopping number sung by Zoe Saldaña in Netflix’s “Emilia Perez,” won the best song Oscar Sunday night for French songwriters Camille and Clément Ducol and their co-writer, the film’s director Jacques Audiard.
Later in the evening, English composer Daniel Blumberg won the original score Oscar for his music for Brady Corbet’s epic “The Brutalist.”
The song “El Mal,” in Audiard’s operatic drama, is a three-minute tour de force for Saldaña as lawyer Rita Castro, a fantasy in which she dances around a room filled with the rich and powerful, decrying the hypocrisy of those responsible for the murders of thousands of Mexicans during the drug wars.
Mick Jagger introduced the category, taking the stage to the strains of the Rolling Stones’ 1968 classic “Sympathy for the Devil.”

The bumpy road to Oscar glory will reach its end Sunday night at the 97th Academy Awards, closing out one of the most unpredictable awards seasons in years. Ups and downs, twists and turns, mudslinging, mea culpas, tears both happy and sad — we’ve seen it all in recent weeks as the race kept us guessing what new upheaval might come next.

The Oscar winner for Best Original Song, as predicted by Gold Derby's odds, was "El Mal" from Emilia Pérez. It was written by Camille and Clément Ducol, who also composed the film's score, and the film's director, Jacques Audiard. It's the first Oscar win for all three songwriters. Unfortunately, that meant a 16th loss for Diane Warren, who was nominated for penning "The Journey" from The Six Triple Eight and to date still hasn't won a competitive Oscar.
This year's Oscar race started at the Hollywood Music in Media Awards last fall, and it was a good night for Emilia Pérez, which won Best Music Themed Film, Biopic, or Musical; Best Song — Onscreen Performance (for Zoe Saldaña singing "El Mal"); and Best Score — Feature Film. However, "El Mal" didn't win Best Song - Feature Film. That was Warren for "The Journey," while "Never Too Late" was named the best song from a documentary.

“Emilia Pérez” won Best Film from the French 2025 César Awards, a major win for the Netflix film ahead of the Oscars. Jacques Audiard’s movie had earned 13 Oscar nominations but then fell out of frontrunner status.
The film also won both Best Director and Best Adapted Screenplay for Jacques Audiard, though Zoe Saldaña, who has dominated the awards circuit all year, lost in an upset to Hafsia Herzi for the film “Borgo.” Saldaña though was nominated alongside Karla Sofía Gascón in the Best Actress category, and not in Best Supporting Actress.
In all, “Emilia Pérez” took home seven Césars out of 12 nominations, including Best Visual Effects, Best Sound, Best Original Music, and Best Cinematography. “The Count of Monte Cristo,” a new version of the Dumas revenge tale, led all nominees with 14, and it won two.

After laying low in the wake of several clumsy apology attempts over her offensive posts, “Emilia Pérez” star Karla Sofia Gascón made her first award show appearance on Friday at the Paris-set Cesar ceremony where Jacques Audiard’s Spanish language crime musical is vying for 12 nods.
Flanked by two men who appeared to be security, Gascón bypassed the Cesar press line and went directly inside the Olympia auditorium. She was placed on the same row as her co-star Saldana and Audiard but was not seated next to them.
Gascón, who lives in Spain, traveled to France for the Cesar, France’s equivalent to the Oscars, and will be facing Saldana in the best actress category. In France, the movie isn’t handled by Netflix but by the French company Pathé which likely covered her travel expenses.
As Variety reported this week, she’s also due to attend the Oscar ceremony...
