The story of the 1992 American men’s basketball team at the Olympics is a legendary one indeed. That was the first year that professional players were allowed to compete at the games, and Team U.S.A. was stocked with names like Michael Jordan, Larry Bird, and Magic Johnson. Everyone knows the story of how dominant that team was, but until now most fans probably don’t know that they started their Olympic run with a loss in a scrimmage. Learn about the players who beat them in “We Beat the Dream Team,” the new documentary premiering on HBO and Max.

The reactions to news that No. 1 WNBA draft choice and NCAA all-time scoring leader Caitlin Clark is likely not on Team USA’s squad for the Paris Olympics is mostly drawing outrage from fans and pundits.
The popular Indiana Fever rookie is apparently not going to be on the team, according to several reports. She has an outside shot if someone gets hurt between now and the start of the games.
A few lone contrarians pointed out by the time of the games, Clark will have played back to back college and pro seasons, and could stand a rest. But most lamented that the WNBA’s star attraction won’t be must-see TV at the games.
Some of the reactions:
Yet Caitlin Clark is not selected to the Team USA Women’s Basketball team heading to Paris for the Olympics?!?! All she does is grow the game, pack arenas, and set rookie records.

Caitlin Clark is not likely to be a member of the 12-player Team USA women’s basketball squad for the Summer Olympics, The Athletic reports, citing several sources.
The popular Indiana Fever rookie, the NCAA’s all-time leading scorer, is being bypassed in favor of veterans.
Reports indicate the roster will feature players A’ja Wilson, Breanna Stewart, Diana Taurasi, Brittney Griner, Alyssa Thomas, Napheesa Collier, Jewell Loyd, Kelsey Plum, Jackie Young, Sabrina Ionescu, Chelsea Gray and Kahleah Copper.
The U.S. women should be a favorite in Paris.
Clark still has an outside chance of being on the squad as an injury replacement. She missed Team USA’s tryouts in the spring because of her Iowa team’s deep run in the NCAA tournament.
It’s been a rough introducion to the WNBA for Clark, who has been “hammered” in her own words, including one non-basketball foul by a Chicago Fever player.

Years ago, in the pages of Men’s Journal, I confessed to a psychotic obsession with the NFL draft. I dreamed of leaving journalism and being allowed to turn around a wayward team like the Jacksonville Jaguars using ideas like, “Always pick the guy who falls in the draft after a positive weed test.”
But Jaguars owner Shahid Khan never returned my calls. Moreover, I’m beginning to think the NFL won’t exist 20 years from now, because of that minor problem of the sport being physically lethal to its employees.

HBO has garnered acclaim for their prestige TV offerings, but one of their most underrated contributions to the television landscape is 2015’s “7 Days in Hell,” a mockumentary of the infamous John Isner/Nicolas Mahut Wimbledon showdown that shattered the record for longest tennis match in history. On the strengths of stars Andy Samberg and Kit Harrington, “7 Days in Hell” also took aim at a few of the legendary tennis rivalries of the 70s, 80s and 90s that brought the sport into the mainstream.
It’s a goofy, perfectly timed spoof that plays with the familiar tropes of sports docs, namely the ones in Espn’s “30 for 30” series. Apparently, it worked so well that HBO wanted more. Samberg and “7 Days in Hell” writer Murray Miller have reteamed for another trip through niche sports history with “Tour de Pharmacy,” a fictional look at a doping scandal in the world of 80s cycling.

Christian Laettner was such a legendary college basketball player that people automatically assume his professional career, which actually spanned 13 NBA seasons, was a complete bust. History is also not particularly kind to Laettner when you consider that the former Duke Blue Devil was one of the most disliked athletes in the Ncaa archives — and that national hatred is exactly what Espn’s “30 for 30” focused on. “I Hate Christian Laettner,” which debuts on Sunday at 9 p.m. Et on Espn and is narrated by Rob Lowe, explores the former Dream Team member’s storybook college career, which included four Final Four appearances and winning.

Buzz Bissinger received a torrent of abuse for saying the NBA's popularity is declining without white superstars. Now comes Jimmer Fredette, who's dominating March Madness chatter not because he's the best-but because he's white.
A couple of weeks ago I wrote a column about the specter of race in the National Basketball Association. I said the league's popularity was being affected because some white fans were turned off to a game in which there was not a single white American superstar.

It was not pretty. Most of the cuts have healed except for the one on my elbow.
I fervently believe what I wrote. There was supporting evidence I should have put in but did not because a column is an opinion and space isn't unlimited at The Daily Beast. I have since discovered more compelling evidence.

Pondering topics for a column, I indulged in a thought exercise of wish fulfillment: if I had the chance to time-travel to the greatest moments in sports, when and where would I go? Inevitably, thoughts of time travel take my mind to Doctor Who, and with the imminent return of the Doctor in only ten days, I imagined sports-related destinations for the Doctor. He would not necessarily guide the Tardis to my preferred events, but without a doubt he would visit those athletic events that had some measure of intergalactic peril in the mix. Thus, I give you the untold sporting adventures of Doctor Who.

Disney mastered the art of the sports underdog movie long ago, but now they’re just showing off. After crafting hits like Remember the Titans, The Rookie, and Miracle, in which real-life longshots overcome incredible obstacles and long odds to achieve athletic glory, Disney figured they really don’t even need the underdog. I give you Secretariat, which opens tomorrow on about 2,500 screens. It’s generally acknowledged that the strapping red colt was the most dominant Triple Crown winner ever, galloping into history with a Pegasus-like performance at the 1973 Belmont Stakes. At the Belmont, Secretariat was a 1-10 favorite to win the race.

For any sports fan, there are a handful of images or sequences that are permanently etched in his or her memory. There's Willie Mays' incredible over-the-shoulder catch, Bill Buckner's World Series faux pas in 1986, the amazing Christian Laettner buzzer-beater in the 1992 Ncaa basketball tournament — these are all incredible moments that live on courtesy of countless highlight reels and compilations. One of the most notorious of these is the play that became known as the "Immaculate Reception," which occurred on this day in 1972 in a game between the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Oakland Raiders.
