One of the best science fiction movies of the last decade, Denis Villeneuve’s incredible Blade Runner 2049 laid the foundation for the fantastic director to continue down the path of excellent sci-fi filmmaking, culminating in his two Academy Award-nominated adaptations of Frank Herbert's seminal novel Dune. The film features some of the most stunning cinematography, fantastic music and sound design and patiently brilliant storytelling in recent cinema history, continuing to chronicle the evolution of robotic artificial intelligence and the implications that these life forms would have on a futuristic world.
One thing that stands above all in Blade Runner 2049 is the performances, pairing legendary actors like Ryan Gosling, Harrison Ford and Robin Wright with relative newcomers like Ana de Armas, Mackenzie Davis and Sylvia Hoeks to create one of the most stacked casts in recent films. But arguably the stand-out performance in the film comes from wrestler turned actor Dave Bautista,...

Bill Nighy (“Living”) is among the stars recruited to join Prime Video’s upcoming action-adventure series starring Octavia Spencer and Hannah Waddingham. That show also now has a title — “Ride or Die” — while Matt Miller (“Lethal Weapon”) has joined as showrunner and Peyton Reed (“Ant-Man”) has been tapped to direct the first two episodes.
Based on an idea by creator Tessa Coates (“Feel Good”), the eight-episode “Ride or Die” stars Waddingham (“Ted Lasso”) as Judith, who has secretly been working as a highly trained assassin. That’s a double life that Judith’s best friend Debbie (played by Spencer) knows nothing about — until a hit goes wrong. Now Judith and Debbie are on the run, aiming to stay one step ahead of a mysterious enemy.

Sometimes, a movie is so good that it immediately makes the audience hungry for more. Often, studios attempt to capitalize on this desire by churning out sequels as soon as they possibly can, even if it means pushing out a movie sequel with a massive budget. By doing this, they can continue to keep people excited about the franchise, maintaining its status as a lucrative outlet for the company. The downside of this strategy, however, is that the need to rapidly produce these movies can often come with the consequence of having to sacrifice the high level of quality achieved by the original film.
Once in a while, though, a studio makes the bold decision to make audiences wait quite a while before giving them the sequel they have been craving. This is a risky move, as it can result in losing the excitement surrounding the franchise, but it also...

An adaptation of Nicholas Hogg’s novel Tokyo, Jordan Scott’s sophomore directorial “A Sacrifice” has all the indications of competent filmmaking. The production design is neat and stately, and the pace is quite brisk. However, the very center of the film is caught up in a mesh of major screenwriting issues. Scott, who has also written the adapted screenplay, seems to have been trapped in key, critical areas of the plot, which she entirely dispenses with in a hasty rush of information, intercutting between various perspectives in the climactic stretch.
The rush and scramble of providing detailed backstories all at once at a juncture in the film that’s simply too late comes off as an effort to purely cushion the ‘big twist’ in the tale. While the predictability of it is up for debate, the twist considerably sacrifices facets of characterization, pulping previously established parameters so as to achieve a swift landing.

Creating a sequel to an iconic film is never an easy task, something Denis Villeneuve recently revealed was on his mind when he decided to make Blade Runner 2049. Despite having some truly great films under his belt leading into the sequel to Ridley Scott's classic sci-fi film, Villeneuve revealed that he believed Blade Runner 2049 could have been a career-ending film if he didn't succeed.
Per Variety, Villeneuve sat down with Ted Lasso star Brett Goldstein for an hour-long conversation at the BFI London Film Festival, in which the director discussed various points of his career, including his time directing Blade Runner 2049. The Oscar-nominated director revealed that deciding to tackle the sequel to Scott's Blade Runner was one of the "most risky" decisions he's ever made in his career, but maintains that he couldn't pass up the opportunity because Blade Runner was his favorite film. See, one of the first original projects on Apple TV+ has crept into the top 10 more than five years after its premiere and two years after the final episode. With Twilight of the Gods unleashing Zack Snyder's Norse mythology retelling onto Netflix, his new animated series has garnered higher praise and a greater Rotten Tomatoes score than most of the Rebel Moon franchise. Twilight of the Gods features an all-star cast including Sylvia Hoeks, Stuart Martin, Rahul Kohli, Paterson Joseph, Pilou Asbaek, and John Noble as many of Norse mythology's most well-known figures, including Thor, Loki, and Odin.

Twilight of the Gods is officially streaming on Netflix this week, and it's quite possibly one of Zack Snyder's most crowd-pleasing projects to-date. Based on Norse mythology, the series revolves around Sigrids (Sylvia Hoeks) revenge-filled quest to slay the God of Thunder, Thor (Pilou Asbk), after he savagely murdered her entire family on the night she was set to marry King Leif (Stuart Martin). This inciting incident leads to Sigrid putting together a ragtag team to wage war against the gods.

Twilight of the Gods is a Norse-inspired animated series on Netflix by Zack Snyder and features a stacked cast of talented voice actors. One of Netflix's upcoming animated shows, Twilight of the Gods tells the story of Sigrid, a strong-willed Viking warrior. Zack Snyder’s partnership with Netflix has been an iffy one so far. After moving away from Warner Brothers, Snyder turned to the small screen for his first feature film with Netflix, Army of the Dead. It had an interesting cast, a very fun premise, and the potential to spawn a zombie-filled franchise. In addition to directing and writing the film, Snyder also decided to serve as its cinematographer. And, well, the results were bad. Then he produced the prequel to that film, titled Army of Thieves, and I don’t know if anyone on this planet remembers watching it. Eventually that franchise was entirely scrapped, and Snyder focused on building the world of Rebel Moon. Netflix and its amazing marketing tried to reverse-engineer the Snyder Cut movement by releasing the awfully edited PG-13 version of the first 2 chapters of this franchise. They were rightfully lambasted. The R-rated cuts were much better,...

How Zack Snyder Made ‘Twilight of the Gods’ Into a 2D Animated Adult Fever Dream of Sex and Violence

For Zack Snyder, the 2D adult animated “Twilight of the Gods” series (currently streaming on Netflix) became his purest form of visual expression. In fact, his deep dive into Norse mythology was like a fever dream of sex and violence driven by the wild hand-crafted animation from French-based Xilam Animation.
“It was 100 percent like [a fever dream],” Snyder told IndieWire. “The amazing thing about it is the language of 2D adult animation fits so well within the context of Norse mythology, which is a bizarro world anyway. Digging down into it, you’re not going to break it with your own embellishments: We should have a sexy scene here, or we should have some gore here, or we should have some crazy relationships here. You can’t out-Norse it, right? So it was a really fun playground for me because I feel like my natural aesthetic is very close to what it was like reading Norse mythology.

Zack Snyder is at it again, dividing critics with his new animated series Twilight of the Gods. Based on Norse mythology, Twilight of the Gods follows Sigrid (Sylvia Hoeks) as she swears bloody revenge against Thor (Pilou Asbaek) and the rest of the Asgardian deities. The series is Snyder's sixth partnership with Netflix, and the director's first full foray into animation, and, in true Zack Snyder fashion, critics can't agree with their opinions of the show.
The early reviews for Twilight of the Gods are a mixed bag. The majority of reviews have called the series an up-and-down affair. According to critics, Twilight of the Gods combines beautiful visuals (a staple of Snyder's movies) with an undercooked story that lacks narrative depth. However, some critics absolutely adore the show. Steve Seigh of JoBlo wrote, "Twilight of the Gods is a brilliantly bloody and well-crafted epic that brings promise to the filmmakers foray into animation.

Visionary filmmaker Zack Snyder has unveiled his latest Netflix project, Twilight of the Gods, which is his first-ever series and a rare sighting of him working in the animation format. Netflix’s ‘Twilight of the Gods’ mixes Norse mythology with sex, magic, and extreme violence as its strives for a mythical quest that’s truly for mature audiences.
“The age of petty Gods must end.”
The past decade has been a goldmine for subversive tales about Gods and mythological warriors, whether it’s American Gods, Ragnarok, Kaos, or even YA fare like the Percy Jackson series. Additionally, animation has really run wild with this subject matter in both despondent action dramas like Blood of Zeus and farcical comedies like Krapopolis. This is certainly territory that feels right at home for a stylized filmmaker like Zack Snyder, who initially turned heads with his historical action epic, 300, only to tackle increasingly fantastical subject matter and repeated ruminations on the nature of “Gods.” In this sense, Twilight of the Gods feels like it’s been a long time coming for Snyder. All episodes of Twilight of the Gods are now streaming on Netflix, and the review embargo for Zack Snyder's adult animated Norse mythology series lifted around the same time the show premiered.
This isn't always a great sign, but the first wave of reviews have been mostly very positive.
Snyder's work has rarely gone over well with critics, but his last Netflix collaboration - the Rebel Moon movies - really came in for a drubbing. So far, Twilight of the Gods has fared a lot better.
Though there are some negative verdicts, the majority of write-ups praise the animation style, world-building, voice-acting and bloody action - although it sounds like Snyder may have overindulged in the graphic violence and sex a little too much for some tastes.
Have a read through the reviews below, and we'll be sure to update once we have a Rotten Tomatoes score.

In the opening scene of Zack Snyder’s Twilight of the Gods, Leif Völsung (Stuart Martin) tells his men how he met his betrothed, Sigrid (Sylvia Hoeks). The animated series cuts to a kinetic depiction of the Norse king’s story. At the height of a battle on a wintry field, a warrior tears her way through an invading army and, with a feat of preternatural skill, saves Leif’s life. Before long, only the pair of newfound comrades remain standing, the snow beneath them marred by streaks of blood that resemble the scribbles of a giant.
Once the fighting concludes, Hans Zimmer’s spirited score turns to grim quiet, but that calm is cracked by a lightning bolt that heralds the arrival of a valkyrie, descended from the heavens to take the valiant dead to Valhalla. “As it left us, the valkyrie bowed,” Leif recalls. “To my Sigrid. And I knew love.

This full-length promo spotlights plenty of bloody battles, as a mortal warrior named Sigrid enlists the aid of Loki (probably not a great idea) to wage war against Thor after the vengeful God of Thunder murders her entire family.
"In a mythical world of great battles, great deeds, and great despair, Leif (Stuart Martin), a mortal king, is saved on the battlefield by Sigrid (Sylvia Hoeks), an iron-willed warrior with whom he falls in love," reads the updated synopsis. Later this month, on September 19, Zack Snyder will unleash his new animated epic Twilight of the Gods on Netflix. The ultra-violent odyssey brings the filmmaker’s stylish sensibilities to the battlefield for a sprawling love story fueled by vengeance and a desire to see the gods face down in the snow. Netflix released the official trailer for “Twilight of the Gods,“ Zack Snyder’s 2D adult animated series about the clash between Norse gods and mortals (premiering September 19). The mythic tale of vengeance and power unfurls amidst an abundance of choreographic violence and gore.
It’s a tragic love story that begins with badass warrior Sigrid (Sylvia Hoeks) heroically saving the life of mortal king Leif (Stuart Martin) — in slow-mo, of course, with beautiful streaks of blood. But their wedding day is destroyed by Thor (Pilou Asbæk), who slaughters her family, sending Sigrid on a vengeful rampage. With Leif by her side, she forms a band of rebels to kill Thor, with the support of Paterson Loki (Paterson Joseph), who wants to take over the world of the gods.

After showing brief glimpses of Twilight of the Gods earlier this year, Netflix is offering a more extensive look at the animated series from Zack Snyder.
The streamer has released a full trailer for the series, which takes Norse mythology as its source material — featuring a vengeful, very much not Marvel-influenced Thor and a still-scheming Loki. The show centers on Sigrid (voiced by Sylvia Hoeks), a fierce warrior who saves King Leif (Stuart Martin) in battle. After they marry, the couple “survive a wrath of terror from Thor (Pilou Asbæk), which sets them and a crew of crusaders on an against-all-odds and merciless mission for vengeance,” per the show’s description. Watch the trailer below.
Snyder’s producing partner and wife, Deborah Snyder, told The Hollywood Reporter at a Netflix event in June that the streamer offered them creative freedom in making Twilight of the Gods: “We pitched them...
