D’Arcy goes for it as a depressed tech manager in Guy Moshe’s low-budget sci-fi, which falls apart in the final act
James D’Arcy is one of those good-looking, highly competent British actors who is steadily and widely employed, but seldom gets cast in the main role – apart from, say, playing Edward VIII in Madonna’s memorably panned biopic We. This quirky, low-budget science-fiction feature gives him a chance to let rip (maybe just a smidge too much at times) as Adam Bird, a depressed middle manager for a technology firm. The American accents everyone puts on, even though most of the cast is British, suggests that events are supposed to be taking place somewhere in North America, though the cityscape, with its glowing monorail and CGI skyline, is pretty obviously a set – in this case a studio in Vilnius, Lithuania. That barely matters because the characters hardly ever go outside,...

Major props to filmmaker Guy Moshe and his hyperactive imagination. He not only wrote and directed but also edited and produced Lx 2048, a modestly budgeted, near-future dystopian, cautionary tale. Though obviously inspired by Blade Runner, Black Mirror and practically everything in between, Lx 2048 stands on its own for its loopy, surrealistic, risk-embracing charms. Lx 2048 overflows with the kind of wildly ambitious, provocative Big Ideas atypical for a genre that too often has tilted towards action over story or character. There’s little actual action in Lx 2048, at least the way contemporary action tends to be defined as a combination of physical stunt-work and budget-busting visual effects. Instead, the action in Lx 2048 revolves around character-revealing character and an overabundance of...

At a time when most ruined future Earths are drawing on themes of climate change or that old stalwart, nuclear Armageddon, Guy Moshe takes a step sideways into a world where the loss of the ozone layers has rendered the daytime sun inimical to human life (the vast toll it must have taken on other forms of life is not addressed). Society has restructured itself in a way that will seem familiar to viewers watching during the Covid-19 pandemic, with most people working from home and most activities carried out in the virtual realm. Here's, life is much safer - but the shortage of accidents means that when Adam (James D'Arcy) is told that his heart is failing, he despairs - there's little hope of a transplant.
Adam has recently separated from wife Reena (Anna Brewster) but still worries about what will become of her and his three sons, especially as.

A solid entry in a genre that’s likely to see exponential growth over the next few years, Guy Moshe’s Lx 2048 explores how hypothetical advances in virtual reality, cloning, AI and the digitization of biological brains will change the way humans deal with familial and romantic relationships. Yes, that’s a long list of sci-fi topics, and we haven’t even mentioned the picture’s takes on climate change, pharmaceuticals and demographic shifts.

"Did you not think it was dangerous – playing god like that?" Quiver Dist. has released an official trailer for a peculiar, fascinating new sci-fi feature titled Lx 2048, a new film from filmmaker Guy Moshe who hasn't made anything since Bunraku back in 2010 (remember that one?). The concept for this is very, very timely and a clear reference to what's going on these days. In the near future, the sun has become so toxic people can no longer leave their houses in daytime, and normal life is conducted mostly inside the virtual realm. Everyone is so depressed they're prescribed a drug called 001LithiumX (which was the original title of the film). Against this dystopian backdrop, a dying man seeks to ensure the well-being of his family, while coping with what it means to be human in this new reality. Starring James D'Arcy as Adam, along with Gina McKee, Delroy Lindo,...

*full disclosure: a DVD screener of this film was provided by Sony Pictures. Director: David Hackl. Writers: Jack Reher and Guy Moshe. Cast: James Marsden, Thomas Jane, Piper Perabo, Scott Glenn and Billy Bob Thornton. “When a grizzly gets angry, they don't give a shit whether you're a logger or a treehugger. All of you taste the same.” David Hackl (Saw V) and his all-star cast take you deep into Alaska's picturesque woods in search of a killer bear in Into The Grizzly Maze. The film, which was actually shot in Vancouver, is an intense thriller with a clear moral agenda—to raise awareness about our destructive role in environmental degradation. While the film's message is strong, it's not too heavy-handed in its delivery, still allowing for an action-packed “natural horror”adventure. Though unnecessary, the celebrity cast makes for a more enjoyable watch; it's fun to see big name actors...

Severed limbs, evil poachers, and a gigantic killer grizzly bear – oh my! That’s exactly what Saw V director David Hackl aims to deliver in his new animalistic thriller, Into The Grizzly Maze, and he certainly doesn’t fail. The film wastes little time introducing viewers to a massive, angry bear who doesn’t take kindly to illegal hunters invading its home turf, so he/she decides to get revenge through his/her own series of grotesque murders. For every action, there’s an equal and opposite reaction, but when you screw with Mother Nature, that reaction is usually a Hell of a lot worse than normal. Mess with the bull, you get the horns – or in this case, you get the bear claws.

If you listen closely, you can almost hear the elevator pitch on this one. It’s like Jaws, right? But, it’s in the forest – with a giant bear, guys with guns, and a token ballsy blonde to keep the ladies happy. Sure, it sounds like Into The Grizzly Maze basically writes itself, but the most cursory of looks at the newly released trailer suggests that this might actually have a very healthy B-movie pulse to it. What else could account for the presence of the legendary Scott Glenn, and Academy Award winner Billy Bob Thornton?

Saw V director, David Hackl, returns to horror with Grizzly. Also known as Endangered and Red Machine, this title involves a grizzly bear on a rampage and two brothers lost in the Alaskan wilderness. Grizzly stars: James Marsden, Piper Perabo, Billy Bob Thornton and Thomas Jane. A trailer for this feature has recently been released. The story begins with several disappearances. Other minor characters are reduced to bloody pools and Grizzly looks like a film for gorehounds. The official trailer for the film is below. Release Date: 2014. Director: David Hackl. Tiff’s Midnight Madness program turned 25 this year, and for two and half decades, the hardworking programers have gathered some of the strangest, most terrifying, wild, intriguing and downright entertaining films from around the world. From dark comedies to Japanese gore-fests and indie horror gems, the Midnight Madness program hasn’t lost its edge as one the leading showcases of genre cinema. In its 25-year history, Midnight Madness has introduced adventurous late-night moviegoers to such cult faves as Richard Linklater’s Dazed and Confused and Quentin Tarantino’s Reservoir Dogs. But what separates Midnight Madness from, say, Montreal’s three and half week long genre festival Fantasia, is that Tiff selects only ten films to make the cut. In other words, these programmers don’t mess around. Last week I decided that I would post reviews of my personal favourite films that screened in past years. And just like the Tiff programmers,...

An old tale is told in a visually bold manner in Guy Moshe's Bunraku. Revenge is always a good starting point for any story, and in this case, it helps the odds as two men, a drifter played by Josh Hartnett, and a young Japanese played by pop star Gackt, seek vengeance from The Woodcutter, played by Ron Perlman. Bunraku takes a lot of chances, the film is staged in such a way that the viewer will either jump on board or become disillusioned very quickly. I found myself in the former camp, after aligning myself with the illusion. Arc Entertainment bring Bunraku to Blu-ray and DVD in a very capable digital presentation with the stylized visuals holding their own and the sound keeping up...

The star-studded experimental film which stars Josh Harnett stars Demi Moore, Woody Harrelson & Ron Perlman and made it's debut at last year's Toronto Film Festival will be available to take home on November 1st. The Film For an indie film to reach cult status it needs to make a splash, either by being really good (Donnie Darko) or really bad (The Room); landing somewhere in the middle just won’t cut it. That’s the trouble that director Guy Moshe has run into with his second feature film, Bunraku. His visually exciting b-movie doesn’t commit to one tone; It’s too serious to be a farce, but too silly to be a drama. The result is bafflingly uneven, an all-style-no-substance thrill ride, that’s as dull as it is entertaining. Equal parts Yojimbo, and Tim Burton’s Batman, the story takes...

Quentin Tarantino has a lot to answer for. The success of both his Kill Bill films has in turn opened the floodgates for a number of copycat movies to emerge in recent years attempting to blend the genres of the Japanese samurai film with American Westerns all with varying degrees of success. The latest to join the list is Bunraku, released on Blu-ray and DVD today, written and directed by Guy Moshe who made the film on a budget of just $25million.
A mysterious drifter (Josh Hartnett) and an ardent young Japanese warrior Yoshi, played by Gackt in his international film debut, both arrive in a town that is terrorised by outrageous and virulent criminals. There are so few films that get made these days in which a director, writer, and cast genuinely stretch themselves to try and make something different. Bunraku is one of those films. And it is awesome almost beyond words.
Writer-director Guy Moshe clearly had a vision for his film, and together with a fantastic cast led by Josh Hartnett and international newcomer Gackt (though he’s already a famous Japanese musician/actor) and supported by Woody Harrelson, Kevin McKidd, Ron Perlman, and Demi Moore, he saw the realization of that vision into an utterly creative film that just doesn’t stop giving. From start to finish, it’s an explosive film that will blow your mind.
Much like Sin City has been praised for the creativity of its production and has gained cult status, Bunraku is just as worthy of such praise and status, and not only because Hartnett is...
