The well-acted, confidently crafted indie “Scrap” probes messy family dynamics with low-key but taut acuity, avoiding the usual poles of dysfunctional-clan comedy or high drama driven by yelling matches and shocking revelations. Since premiering at the 2022 Deauville Film Festival, American writer-director Vivian Kerr’s debut feature has been kicking around the festival circuit for more than two years, in which time she’s completed a sophomore effort (period thriller “Seance”). Though she plays the leading role in both, this is no vanity project, her own character being perhaps the least sympathetic among several awkwardly interlocked lives in Los Angeles. Kerr is self-distributing this credible depiction of “hidden” homelessness and problematic sibling dependencies, which hits on-demand platforms Dec. 13.

Writer/director Vivian Kerr accomplishes something daring in her directorial debut Scrap by combining two very different but equally compelling subject matters: Challenging sibling relationships and the beginning stages of homelessness. The indie film, currently making the rounds at film festivals, has won praise for its timely story and solid acting.

Kerr also stars in the movie, playing Beth, a woman who has recently been laid off and struggles to maintain the appearance of a successful middle-class lifestyle. Desperate to land a new job and change her situation, she soon finds herself butting up against her estranged older brother Ben (Anthony Rapp of Star Trek: Discovery), who discovers her dilemma. And so begins a unique adult coming-of-age tale about mending broken ties and moving forward amidst great uncertainty.

Scrap is a character-driven drama that has won high marks for its strong cast, emotional depth, and the way it captures real-life issues.

Exclusive: Once Upon a Time alum Lana Parrilla has been set to star alongside Anthony Rapp and writer-director Vivian Kerr in Scrap, an indie drama from producer Rachel Stander and her A Season of Rain banner. Beth Dover, Khleo Thomas, Brad Schmidt and Julianna Layne have also joined the cast of the pic, which is now shooting.

Kerr plays Beth, who has recently been laid off and struggles to maintain the appearance of a successful middle-class lifestyle as she bounces around Los Angeles. Hoping to land a new job and change her situation before her estranged older brother Ben (Rapp) finds out, Beth must confront her own pride before she can reconnect with him and provide for her young daughter Birdy (Layne).

Parrilla, whose most recent credits include Paramount+’s Why Woman Kill, will play Ben’s wife, a successful attorney who is secretly struggling with IVF and re-evaluating her own conflicted relationship with motherhood.

The film touches on the Mormon Church’s early history of racially discriminatory practices. Directed by Chantelle Squires, it tells the story of two women, Emma Smith, the wife of Joseph Smith, the founder of Mormonism, and Jane Manning, one of the first black members.

For centuries, people of African descent were shunned from the Church as they were believed to have “the curse of Cain,” who, in the biblical account, was barred from the priesthood after murdering his brother Abel. This year marks the 40th anniversary of the end to that doctrine, which was heavily implemented by Brigham Young, the second president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

When New Girl airs its milestone 100th episode next Tuesday (8/7c), the Fox comedy will kick off a run of very eventful spring episodes, most of them in preparation for Cece and Schmidt’s long-awaited nuptials.

But even before Cece takes that walk down the aisle, there’s other business for the show to attend to, including Jess’ return from jury duty, her first face-to-face interactions with Reagan and bachelor/bachelorette soirees that sound absolutely insane.

Showtime's House of Lies is adding a devout Christian character to its ranks. Newcomer Brad Schmidt has joined the Don Cheadle comedy, The Hollywood Reporter has learned. He'll play Jc Butterman, for a recurring role as a handsome devout Christian with an arrogant swagger. He becomes the latest addition to the third season of the ensemble comedy about a management consultants. Happy Endings alum Eliza Coupewill recur alongside Mekhi Phifer (ER) and Genevieve Angelson as Caitlyn, a love interest for Doug (Josh Lawson).  Schmidt recently completed filming the Jaume Collet-Serra-produced Eden opposite Ethan Peck and Nate Parker.
