Every now and then, a true cinematic classic flies so far under the radar that its destiny to become a cult favorite is clear right from the start. Such was the case with the 2016 mockumentary musical comedy Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping, which stars Saturday Night Live alumnus and Brooklyn Nine-Nine star Andy Samberg as Conner "Kid Conner" Friel, a pop star struggling to go solo after being part of the rap group phenomenon The Style Boyz.

Grossly missed by many upon release, Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping has now landed on Prime Video, and we urge you to either discover or rediscover this modern comedy masterpiece. Directed by The Lonely Island members Akiva Schaffer and Jorma Taccone and written by and starring fellow The Lonely Island member Andy Samberg, as well as Taccone, and Schaffer, Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping was co-produced by Judd Apatow and Rodney Rothman.

1982’s Diner was the comedy that dared to ask: What if some dudes hung out in a greasy spoon restaurant and just talked about stuff?

The movie starred Steve Guttenberg, Mickey Rourke, Daniel Stern, Kevin Bacon, Ellen Barkin and Paul Reiser, just to name a few. It followed a group of friends in the late ‘50s who routinely meet at the local diner to chat about the music, sex and the minutiae of their day-to-day lives.

While that concept may not sound all that novel today, at the time, it was so unusual for mainstream entertainment, that some found it tough to grasp. According to writer-director Barry Levinson, during the editing process, a studio executive tried to get him to cut an argument over a roast beef sandwich because it didn’t do anything to “advance the story.”

Will Forte has looked back at his Saturday Night Live spinoff MacGruber bombing at the box office. The 2010 comedy infamously debuted to harsh reviews and subsequently underperformed at financially as well.

MacGruber was based on Forte's recurring SNL sketches in which he played a MacGyver-like hero whose attempts to diffuse dangerous situations almost always failed miserably. Despite the movie being packed with SNL stars – including Kristen Wiig and Maya Rudolph – the project's failure was seen as a black mark on Forte's potential as a movie star.

Alright, just hear me out. Will Ferrell hit it big with SNL and has made some true classics such as Elf, Stranger Than Fiction, and Anchorman. While that phase of his career was all great and polished, the style of his sometimes crass and all-time dumb humor hit its pinnacle in the mid and late 2000s and 2010s with films like Step Brothers and Talladega Nights.

Taking characters who were fringe personality types was a masterstroke from Ferrell. He did the same, but on a much larger and disastrous scale, with the adventure comedy Land of the Lost. Suddenly, it’s 2006 again.

Lady Gaga took the stage at SNL50: The Homecoming Concert on Friday night to perform “Shallow” from Bradley Cooper’s 2018 film A Star Is Born. She was joined by SNL alum Andy Samberg, who was comically filling in for Cooper.

Gaga quickly interrupted Samberg and suggested they perform something more in his “vocal range.” Samberg mentioned: “There is one song, but Justin [Timberlake’s] not here to do his parts!” Gaga responded: “Andy, don’t be a bitch. I’ll do it with you.”

They then sang a slower version, with Gaga playing the piano, of “Dick in a Box,” a fan-favorite SNL sketch and The Lonely Island song that aired during a holiday episode of the comedy sketch series in 2006. The performance earned laughs from Colin Jost, Scarlett Johansson, Sarah Jessica Parker and more in the audience. The original sketch starred the comedy duo, Justin Timberlake and Samberg.

Andy Samberg and Justin Timberlake originally performed this “Digital Short” on Saturday Night Live on Dec. 16, 2006, and it quickly went viral. Samberg was present at Friday’s 50-year bash at Radio City Music Hall, but his partner in crime was absent. “Andy, don’t be a bitch, I’ll do it with you,” Gaga told him in front of a packed house of former cast members, hosts, and musical guests. Samberg and Gaga started out their set with a version of “Shallow” from A Star Is Born (2018), but the former’s voice wasn’t quite up to snuff.

In one of the night’s standout moments, the Saturday Night Live 50th anniversary concert paid tribute to the legacy of The Lonely Island with an epic medley celebrating some of Andy Samberg, Jorma Taccone, and Akiva Schaffer’s greatest contributions to SNL, kicking off first with Lady Gaga’s rendition of “Dick in a Box.”

Well, first Samberg attempted a cover of “Shallow” from A Star Is Born (complete with Jackson Maine wig) before Gaga shut him down. Then, since Justin Timberlake wasn’t around, she offered to sing “Dick in a Box” in his place.

After a bit, though, Chris Parnell entered the scene to duet with Samberg on “Lazy Sunday,” which then led to Bad Bunny performing “I Just Had Sex,” Eddie Vedder subbing in for Michael Bolton on “Captain Jack Sparrow,” and T-Pain reprising his feature on “I’m On a Boat.”

Ladies & Gentlemen… 50 Years of SNL Music is airing on NBC on Monday night (January 27) and will feature untold stories behind the culture-defining, groundbreaking and news-making musical performances, sketches and cameos of the past 50 years.

The special will showcase interviews with musical artists, cast, writers, producers and more who have been part of SNL’s legacy.

Oscar-winning filmmaker Questlove, who leads the band on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, directed the special with Emmy Award winner Oz Rodriguez.

The day before Sonic the Hedgehog 3 opened in theaters, Paramount Pictures announced that Sonic the Hedgehog 4 would debut in 2027. At the time, no specific release date was given, but following the third entry's impressive box office run and now being available on digital, the studio is planting a flag for a release date. Despite Sonic the Hedgehog 3 having done very well over the Christmas and New Year holidays, Sonic the Hedgehog 4 is racing into the spring season.

Deadline reports that Paramount Pictures has set Sonic the Hedgehog 4 for a Mar. 19, 2027 release date. This puts it one week before Easter weekend, which was a similar release schedule that Sonic the Hedgehog 2 did, by opening one week before Easter in 2022. While 2027 feels like a long wait for fans, it is shorter than the two-and-a-half-year gap between Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and Sonic the Hedgehog 3.

I should probably stop being surprised that the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise has become so successful, especially after the third film has pushed the series over the billion-dollar mark. Paramount is keen to keep the little blue speedster and his pals around a little longer, as they’ve officially slated Sonic the Hedgehog 4 for a March 19, 2027 release.

The post-credit scene of Sonic the Hedgehog 3 did give fans a hint as to where the franchise will go next, but the fourth installment is still in the early stages with no director or star attachments at the moment. Jeff Fowler helmed the first three movies, so it stands to reason that he’ll be back for Sonic 4, but you never know.

Jim Carrey, who plays Dr. Ivo Robotnik in the franchise, has even expressed a willingness to return for Sonic the Hedgehog 4 if they have a good reason to do it.

Saturday Night Live sketches don’t always go smoothly. There might be flubbed lines, missed cues or, between the years 1998 and 2004, Jimmy Fallon’s constant giggling.

One of the biggest challenges for cast members and hosts is performing scenes while reading off of cue cards. Since the sketches are written (and rewritten) at the last minute, memorizing lines isn’t always an option, so actors are often forced to try and act naturally while also reading their dialogue from a large piece of cardstock that some dude is holding offscreen like that creep in Love Actually.

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 features a wide collection of exciting Easter eggs, video game references, and more. Featuring Team Sonic as they clash with the "live-action" debut of Shadow the Hedgehog (voiced by Keanu Reeves), the third Sonic movie adapts several elements from the classic games from Sega, particularly Sonic Adventure 2. To that end, there are several great nods to the 2001 game, alongside many other fun references to the first two Sonic movies, pop culture, and more.

Inspired by Shadow's first appearance in Sonic Adventure 2 alongside Eggman's grandfather Gerald Robotnik (Jim Carrey), Sonic the Hedgehog 3 adapts several core elements of the darker hedgehog's origins, such as his relationship with Maria Robotnik, Gerald's granddaughter. As such, plenty of exciting game connections can be found in the new Sonic movie alongside more typical references audiences have come to expect from the franchise.

As audiences across the globe race to theaters to check out the Blue Blur's third adventure, Paramount Pictures is moving forward with a fourth installment, titled Sonic the Hedgehog 4, and have already slated it for an early 2027 release. 

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 features two post-credit sequences, both of which set up future stories, so this announcement was more of an inevitability than not, but it's certainly nice of the studio to make it official before the latest film's launch.

The Lonely Island‘s Jorma Taccone is in good company for his next directorial project as Ben Schwartz and Sam Rockwell board the upcoming Searchlight comedy DNA. News about Taccone joining DNA as the film’s director and producer comes after he recently launched production in Finland for The Trip, an upcoming thriller starring Jason Segel and Samara Weaving.

Plot details for DNA remain a mystery, though we know Schwartz sold the concept to Searchlight in 2020. Schwartz wrote the script, while Ali Bell, Andy Samberg, Akiva Schaffer, and Taccone produced through their Party Over Here studio. Rockwell gets in on the action as an executive producer alongside Schwartz.

Taconne’s other directorial efforts include shorts and music videos for The Lonely Island, Parks and Recreation, Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping, Miracle Workers, The Last O.G., and Paramount’s Knuckles series. Exclusive: The Lonely Island’s Jorma Taccone has come aboard Searchlight’s comedy DNA, starring Ben Schwartz and Sam Rockwell, as director and producer.

The project is the second announced in two weeks for Taccone, who recently launched production in Finland on The Trip, a thriller starring Jason Segel and Samara Weaving. News of the film first broke in the summer of 2020, after Schwartz sold it to Searchlight as an untitled pitch, with Rockwell also cementing his involvement at that time.

DNA‘s logline is being kept under wraps. Schwartz wrote the script, with Ali Bell, Andy Samberg, Akiva Schaffer, and Taccone to produce under their Party Over Here banner. Schwartz and Rockwell are the executive producers. SVP of Production Taylor Friedman and Creative Executive Cornelia Burleigh are overseeing the project for Searchlight Pictures, reporting to Heads of Production and Development DanTram Nguyen and Katie Goodson-Thomas.

Timothy Olyphant may be best known for playing onscreen lawmen, but his next project will see him tackle a remake of a Norwegian action horror movie. Perhaps best known for playing Deadwoods Sheriff Seth Bullock, Olyphants career has also seen him embody other quick-shooting lawmen, such as Justifieds Deputy U.S. Marshal Raylan Givens, and even The Mandalorians Cobb Vanth. More recently, however, Olyphant has also developed an affinity for playing cyborg characters. In addition to having voiced the Terminator in Netflixs Terminator Zero anime, he is also set to play a synthetic in Noah Hawleys forthcoming Alien: Earth series.

No stranger to working on action-oriented fare, Olyphant is also well acquainted with the horror genre. Not only did he star in and executive produce Netflixs popular horror sitcom The Santa Clarita Diet, but one of his earliest onscreen roles even saw him don the infamous Ghostface killers mask in 1997s Scream 2.
