Nobody Loves You More, Kim Deal’s first-ever solo album, has been a lifetime in the making. The trailblazing singer-songwriter, whose recordings with the Pixies and the Breeders drafted blueprints for the Nineties alt-rock explosion, has always released albums at unusual intervals, La Jetée-like snapshots of her state of mind. She’s been the Buzz Bin sexpot (Pixies’ “Gigantic” for sure, and isn’t “Divine Hammer” simply Gen X’s “Tush”?), she’s been the bong in the reggae song (“Cannonball”), and the ever-moving island (Title Tk’s “Off You”). Other times,...

Nineties alt-rock great Kim Deal continues to tease her debut solo album, Nobody Loves You More, with the release of the LP’s title track, as well as a bunch of tour dates.
The track is noticeably different from previous offerings, with Deal leaning into classic swooning balladry, her tender guitar accompanied first by strings and, eventually, a booming brass band. “I don’t know where I am/And I don’t care,” Deal sings. “One look at you/I forget why I’m standing here/I mean to tell you/Nobody loves you more.

The Pixies’s The Night the Zombies Came sees the first major change in personnel for the band since Paz Lenchantin took over as bassist and backing vocalist a decade ago. Lenchantin, who was unceremoniously removed from the lineup earlier this year, has been replaced by English musician and visual artist Emma Richardson, formerly of Band of Skulls. Richardson, whose vocals are featured prominently throughout, sings an octave above lead singer Black Francis, who even steps away from the mic on occasion to let her sing solo.
Richardson’s harmonies on songs like “Chicken” and “Mercy Me” are positively Beatles-esque, and by default probably the most conventionally beautiful moments in the Pixies’s discography to date. But her youthful and precise voice isn’t there solely to beautify or even balance out Black Francis’s increasingly monotone growl. As she demonstrates on “Motoroller,” which features the album’s most potent guitar riff,...

Kim Deal of The Breeders has shared “A Good Time Pushed,” a new single from the artist’s upcoming debut solo album, Nobody Loves You More. Stream the song and watch its music video below.
In comparison to the beachy lead single “Coast” and the driving, electronic “Crystal Breath,” “A Good Time Pushed” feels more stylistically and tonally akin to Deal’s work with The Breeders or Pixies. Catchy and boasting a slight slacker rock vibe, the cut notably features contributions from Breeders members Jim Macpherson and Kelley Deal. It also comes accompanied by a visualiser created by Mark Satterthwaite. Watch it below.
Nobody Loves You More is set for release on November 22nd via 4Ad. The album was engineered by Deal’s longtime friend and collaborator Steve Albini, who passed away earlier this year. Other contributors to the record include past Breeders members Mando Lopez and Britt Walford, as...

“Now is the time for me to get what I want,” Kim Deal sings halfway through her new solo single, “A Good Time Pushed.” But the declaration, tied to the beginning and end of a relationship, comes with a caveat: “And when I figure it out, consider it bought.” But the good news is that while she’s figuring out what she wants, she’s having a good time, as she sings on the alt-rock song right before a snaky guitar solo. Filmmaker Mark Satterthwaite, who co-produced the Breeders’ “Live in Big Sur” video,...

Last month, Pixies announced their ninth studio album, The Night the Zombies Came, marking the band’s fifth studio release since they reunited in 2004. Now, in a new interview, they explained that one of the things inspiring them to create new music is the fact that they “don’t want to be a Pixies cover band.”
The comment was made by guitarist Joey Santiago in the band’s new interview with Mojo. Alluding to their continued output over the years, he said, “Fans are happy to hear old stuff, but we’re creative people… We don’t want to be a Pixies cover band.”

Jimmy Buffett died last year, but his influence lives on in unexpected ways. Start with “Coast,” the first new solo single in a decade from Breeders’ frontperson Kim Deal. According to Deal, the song came about four years ago when she attended a friend’s nuptials and heard the wedding band play Buffett’s “Margaritaville.” Combined with an unsatisfying trip she took too many years ago to Nantucket — where she went to “duck and roll out of my life,” she sings — Deal concocted her own, ironic take on a bummed-out escapist tune.

Kim Deal, of The Breeders, has released a new solo single called “Coast.”
Her first solo release in nearly a decade — and the first released via 4Ad under her own name — “Coast” was written in 2020 after Deal was inspired by hearing a wedding band cover Jimmy Buffett’s “Margaritaville” with “revelatory levels of low self-esteem.” From there, she reflected on her memories of summers spent on Nantucket, where the youth would “check the Wam” for surfing conditions, and produced an insightful set of lyrics, with lines like, “Clearly all of my life I’ve been foolish/ Tried to hit hard but I blew it/ But it don’t even matter/ It’s just just human to want a way out/ It’s human to wanna win.”

Musically, “Coast” has a steady, mid-tempo groove, with a sing-song melody that comes across almost like a Brian Wilson composition.

Here’s one for the ’90s indie rock lovers: The Breeders have shared “Divine Mascis,” a long-lost version of their Last Splash cut “Divine Hammer” that features Dinosaur Jr. axeman J Mascis on lead vocals. Check it out below.
You’d think Mascis would be playing guitar on the song, since he’s one of the most inventive and beloved players of the original indie rock scene. That’s what The Breeders expected, too, when they sent “Divine Hammer” to the artist way back in the day.

But a closer listen reveals that these pillowy structures are, in fact, cushions against the blows of modern life—bulwarks that keep Parks’ self, the “soft machine” referenced in the album title, moving without cutting herself off or suffering too much long-term damage.

The dream of the ’90s was alive at Coachella Sunday when The Breeders welcomed their successors The Linda Lindas to the stage during their set for backing vocals on the former band’s song “Saints.”
“Saints” appears on The Breeders’ seminal 1993 album Last Splash, meaning it’s at least a decade older than any member of The Linda Lindas. But the age gap didn’t stop the young punks from rocking out alongside the indie rock legends.

Teenage singer-songwriter Olivia Rodrigo has achieved one of the fastest ascents of any artist in history. Since January she has racked up three top-10 hits on the Billboard Hot 100, two of which debuted at number-one (“Drivers License” and “Good 4 U”). And she performed on “Saturday Night Live” on May 15. All of that was before the May 21 release of her debut album “Sour.” So is her new collection worthy of all that advance hype?
SEEIs Olivia Rodrigo’s ‘Drivers License’ already a lock for Grammys in 2022?
Judging from the reviews, the answer is yes. As of this writing “Sour” has a MetaCritic score of 84 based on 16 reviews thus far: 15 positive, one mixed, and none outright negative. Music journos are saying she’s a “major player in … teen pop and adult pop,” who achieves “euphoria” with her expressions of “anger, jealousy, and bewilderment.” It’s “one of the most gratifyingly undignified breakup albums ever made.

We now have a better look at Colin Farrell as Penguin in The Batman. A new behind-the-scenes image has found its way online. From what we can see in this new image, along with the first one that was posted a few weeks ago, Farrell is going to be a much different looking Oswald Cobblepot from what we've seen in the comics, TV shows, and the big screen. The actor is sporting a small mustache with a goatee, along with some silver-looking hair.
The latest behind-the-scenes image from The Batman gives us a closer look at Colin Farrell's take on the Penguin. However, he's not in character, unless the villain is really into double fisting Starbucks coffees. The first image we saw a few weeks ago was taken from afar and found Colin Farrell in an overcoat with the villain's trademark umbrella, which is more in line with what we have seen in the past.

Kim Shattuck, the singer and guitarist who co-founded and led the SoCal punk band the Muffs alongside contributions to Pixies and Nofx, died Wednesday at the age of 56. A rep for Shattuck’s band the Coolies confirmed her death to Rolling Stone. The cause was amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (Als).
“We are very sorry to announce the passing of our bandmate and dear friend Kim Shattuck,” the Muffs’ Ronnie Barnett and Roy McDonald wrote on Facebook. “Besides being a brilliant songwriter, rocking guitarist and singer/screamer extraordinaire, Kim was a true force of nature.

Pixies will issue a new studio album in September and document the recording process with an upcoming behind-the-scenes podcast, “Past Is Prologue, Pixies.” The alt-rock band recorded their as-yet-untitled seventh LP with producer Tom Dalgety, who helmed their most recent record, 2016’s Head Carrier.
The quartet — singer-guitarist Black Francis, guitarist Joey Santiago, bassist-singer Paz Lenchantin, drummer David Lovering — wrote the album throughout 2018 and recorded it in December at Dreamland Recordings near Woodstock, New York. The record is their second with Lenchantin, who joined the lineup in 2014 (following original bassist Kim Deal...

Rolling Stone held its first Morning Sessions during Acl Fest 2018 on Saturday, October 6th, at Wanderlust Yoga in Austin, Texas. Americana bad-ass Elle King and her band The Brethren took Austin City Limits by storm this past weekend, making a pit stop at the Morning Sessions to chat with Music Editor Suzy Exposito. The Country Music Award-winning singer-songwriter is just as much of a firebrand in real life as she is in her songs. But her upcoming album, Shake the Spirit isn’t all piss and vinegar; it’s a...

Seeing nearly any musical act that reached the pinnacle of their success decades earlier is often a nostalgic event to some degree. But Weezer kick off the set on their ongoing summer tour with a moment of such intense, overpowering nostalgia that it almost threatens to rip a hole in the fabric of the space-time continuum. It makes Time Life’s informercial for their Malt Shop Memories box set (“Songs that make you feel young again!”) and the Happy Together tour featuring the Turtles, Three Dog Night’s Chuck Negron...

The Pixies’ new album, “Indie Cindy,” is streaming a week ahead of its release. Listen below. The 12-track set combines the band’s recent EPs — “Ep-1,” “Ep-2,” and “Ep-3” — with three new songs. “Indie Cindy” is the Pixies’ first album since 1991's “Trompe le Monde.” “Doolittle,” “Bossanova” and “Trompe Le Monde” producer Gil Norton returned for the new album, but former bassist and co-founder Kim Deal — who left the band in 2013 — does not appear.

Kim Deal lasted 25 years in the Pixies, but her replacement Kim Shattuck put down her bass after only four months. Based on Shattuck's tweet that announced the news on Friday, it wasn't her decision to leave. Shattuck is the founder of Southern California rock band the Muffs, which she took a break from to play bass and sing backup vocals for the Pixies' first leg of its world tour. The Pixies recently confirmed it will appear at the 2014 Primavera Sound festival, including a Barcelona date with Arcade Fire and Neutral Milk Hotel. The band's North American tour kicks...

First Kim Deal, now Joey Santiago. No, the Pixies' guitarist didn't leave the band, but he's a casualty in its new music video for "What Goes Boom." At the 2:29 mark, poor Santiago explodes into red sci-fi dust. Watch the video here or below. A song off the veteran rock band's recent "Ep-1," "What Goes Boom" buzzes with heavy, noisy guitars. In the video, Santiago hikes through a desolate desert until he meets his untimely end. "Ep-1" is the Pixies first release after the departure of founding member and bassist Deal, who has spent the year touring with her other band,...

Legendary Alternative rock band Pixies formed in Boston in 1986, comprising of front man Black Francis, Joey Santiago on guitars, bass player Kim Deal, and drummer David Lovering on drums. The 4 albums they released before their breakup in 1993 have gone down in history as some of the most influential albums in Alt-Rock history.
They’re noteworthy not just because of how good the music is, but how surrealist the bands lyrics are. Now, after the release of ‘Ep-1′ and ‘Bagboy’, the bands first material since comeback single ‘Bam Thwok’ back in 2004, and the departure of Kim Deal, I look back at the weird and wonderful Pixies songs to come out of the mind of the band.
Here are 10 of the maddest;
10. Debaser

In the wake of Kim Deal leaving the group, the Pixies are releasing new music left and right. The latest is “Indie Cindy,” a track that comes from the group’s similarly just-announced Ep, cleverly titled Ep-1. Available today via the Pixies’ website, Ep-1 was recorded in the UK in Oct. 2012, runs four tracks, and features zero contributions from Deal. Some 5,000 copies of the Ep will be pressed onto 10-inch vinyl, which are available now via the band’s site.

The Pitchfork Music Festival was in high gear Saturday, packed with artists comprising the heaviest of the weekend's performances -- and lots of screaming.
Ear plugs were a must for most of Saturday when the likes of The Swans, Savages and The Breeders took the noise to tinnitus-inducing levels. All the bands on the darker side of the rock spectrum shredded and screamed under the (still hot!) sun until Solange cooled things off her exuberant early-evening grooves.
Here's our roundup of Saturday's highlights (story continues after the slideshow):
Phosphorescent was among the few poppier, harmonious acts amid a day packed with screamers. Noodle-y electronic burts gave their mellow songs a jolt of psych-summer jamminess -- all to great effect -- while songs like "Nothing Was Stolen" ranked among the day's finest examples of vocal harmonies. Perhaps knowing Saturday would have such moments in short supply, the band capped off...

Are the Pixies gearing up for a new album? Probably so: in a press release today, the rockers revealed they're planning a world tour, have replaced departed bassist and co-founder Kim Deal, and will be premiering new songs during their fall stint. This first leg of overseas dates “will give them an opportunity to do something they haven’t been able to do in two decades: premiere brand new Pixies songs, the first collection of new material since 1991's 'Trompe le Monde.'" Band leader Black Francis wrote, "Along with everyone’s favorites, we’ll be playing songs that we haven’t played in ages or...

The question of whether the Pixies will carry on without original bassist Kim Deal has been answered loud and clear. Deal -- also a founding member of The Breeders -- announced her departure from the group just a few weeks ago. The remaining Pixies surprised fans early this morning by releasing a brand new song called "Bagboy," along with a colorfully destructive video. When the influential college rock band -- featuring Black Francis, Deal, David Lovering and Joey Santiago -- reunited in 2004 after a decade apart, they concentrated on touring and largely steered clear of the studio. The last original...

Kim Deal has left the Pixies. The bassist has been with the group off and on for the last 26 years, and she's given no real explanation for her departure. On the Pixies’ Facebook page, the group says only that it “will always consider her a member of the Pixies” and that “her place will always be here for her.” Though the Pixies parted ways in 1993—mostly due to tension between Deal and frontman Frank Black—it reunited in 2003, and has been touring pretty much ever since. The group was even said to be working on a ...

Today marks the 25th anniversary of the Pixies' second album, "Surfer Rosa," a seminal LP that has gone down in Rolling Stone history as one of the 500 greatest records of all time.
Every indie rock band of the past two and half decades owes a great deal to the Pixies, the Boston-bred quartet that seamlessly merged psychedelia, noise rock and alternative grunge to create one of the 1980's most memorable music projects. Formed in the collegiate environment of University of Massachusetts, the band -- comprised of Black Francis, Joey Santiago, Kim Deal and David Lovering -- predates Nirvana as a catalyst for the immeasurable rock boom of the 1990s.
Like most indie rock bands, the Pixies were not a chart topping force, but their second album, the lyrically named "Surfer Rosa," earned accolades on its own after its 1988 release. Robert Christgau of The Village Voice dubbed the record "the Amerindie find of the year,...
