DJ Unk, the Atlanta rapper who had a Top 10 pop single with “Walk It Out” in 2006 and followed with the R&b hit “2 Step,” died Friday. He was 42. His wife Sherkita Long-Platt posted the news on social media but did not provide a cause or place of death.
“Please respect me and my family,” she wrote on Facebook. “I just lost my husband and my kids just lost their father. Our life will never be the same. I Love You Anthony Forever.”
Born on November 28, 1982, in the Georgia capital, DJ Unk (real name Anthony Platt) broken into the music game as part of the Atlanta-based Southern Style DJs. He later signed with local label Big Oomp and recorded his debut Beat’n Down Yo Block!, which became the label’s first album to be distributed under a then-new deal with Koch Records.

André 3000 has a request: Please stop calling his latest project a “flute album.”
On New Blue Sun, the rap genius does indeed play a number of woodwind instruments, but the eight-track ambient jazz set also features bells, chimes, keyboards, cymbals, piano, drums, sintir, a gong and a wind controller.
“The media has touted it as this flute album and I think it’s a misrepresentation of the album. It’s way more than a flute album. They belittle it by calling it a flute album because there are actual flutists that have made flute albums, like Jethro Tull and Paul Horn,” 3000 tells THR. “I think it could be a turnoff to some people if they think, ‘Yo, he’s just in a room playing this flute.'”

West Los Angeles’ Gjusta Bakery is bustling on a sunny Friday afternoon. Seven-foot-high stacks of flour bags lay near the entrance, soon to be turned into pastries. The main room is full of locals seeking an early-afternoon pick-me-up, but the backyard is quieter, with rustic tables and large plants under a makeshift roof made of golden tarp.

When OutKast dropped “Ms. Jackson” in the fall of 2000, the world was stunned. Nobody had ever heard a hip-hop song that sounded anything like this. But there’s never been anybody like OutKast before. The Atlanta duo, made up of Andre 3000 and Big Boi, brought their innovative hip-hop style to the pop charts with “Ms. Jackson,” from their album Stankonia. “Ms. Jackson” blew up into their first Number One hit, and it’s gone down in history as one of the group’s definitive classics. In her review of Normani’s debut album Dopamine, Mankaprr Conteh points to the pop-r&b singer’s “creative reverence” for Black culture across its 13 songs. For Normani, staying true to her identity as a Black woman across the LP was more than intentional. It was necessary.
When speaking to Rolling Stone about the album that dropped Friday, Normani shared that she felt like she was “showing up” for herself by embracing her Blackness after feeling like she had to mute it while she was a member of Fifth Harmony.

People have been clamoring and clowning about the whereabouts of Normani’s debut album for a pop-music eternity. The singer made that noise sound pretty fucking silly when she recently reflected that part of the delay was due to her parents’ simultaneous cancer diagnoses. Normani first announced that her solo debut was in the works in 2018, not long after the girl group she came to prominence in, Fifth Harmony, pumped its breaks for an indefinite hiatus. She went on to drop a few massive features and singles (“Love Lies,” with Khalid; “Dancing With a Stranger,...

Coachella 2024 was the year of the A-list guests. Across all three days, top stars made appearances either onstage or in the crowd to support their musician besties. Olivia Rodrigo joined No Doubt, Will Smith pulled up for J Balvin, Justin Bieber sang with Tems, Billie Eilish threw a last-minute party at the DoLab stage, and Shakira even announced a world tour during Bizarrap’s set.
The talk among some festivalgoers ahead of Coachella suggested that this year’s lineup might underwhelm, but the number of stars joining their friends onstage surely helped with that.

Today, Andy Shauf presents a music video for “Halloween Store” — one of “the best two songs on [Norm]…grounded by acoustic guitar but [featuring] lush instrumental breaks and repeating hooks” (Variety) – and announces a 2024 solo tour. In an enlightening interview with Stereogum in which he shared the story behind every song on the album, Shauf revealed “Halloween Store” was one of the first written for Norm, mulled over and reworked from when he envisioned it as a disco record. “It’s definitely a Halloween story,” he said, “I was hoping to put it out around Halloween, but I missed deadlines.” Now, with Halloween just around the corner, Shauf shines a flashlight on the much-adored Norm standout and “the album’s peak” (Treble). The hand-drawn “Halloween Store” video is charming and timely, a perfect visual accompaniment for the fast-approaching holiday.

In just a few short years, Phil Matarese and Mike Luciano have gone from working at an ad agency in New York to writing about the animals that live in New York on HBO’s “Animals.” At their panel at SXSW this year, moderated by IndieWire’s Eric Kohn and accompanied by producer Jen Roskind, the three of them detailed how a small independent pilot managed to get picked up by HBO. They also offered some sneak peeks into what the unpredictable series has to offer, going into Season 2.
When the first episode was created, with only Matarese and Luciano on board hoping to turn it into a full-fledged web series, screenings of “Animals” was kept exclusively to small crowds in and around their native New York. After being featured at a festival though, they were found by the Duplass brothers, who decided to go ahead and fund the show independently.

Over a decade after releasing her debut Ep, The Audition, Janelle Monáe made her onscreen acting debut in a very big way. Both films have earned numerous accolades as well as praise for Monáe’s performances, thrusting the performer into the spotlight of her first awards season. Eddie Murphy's career has certainly taken a 180-degree turn from his heyday, but that doesn't mean he wasn't making some pretty great films at one time. Over the weekend my girlfriend stopped her channel-surfing on the superb late-'80s comedy Coming to America and as much as I enjoy that film, it got me thinking about another feature. Seeing it reminded me of how she'd never seen what I believe to be the most overlooked Eddie Murphy film of all-time and one of the best romantic comedies of all-time for that matter. Boomerang, which turned 20-years-old on July 1. I don't know how many times I have been in a discussion involving romantic comedies and how bad they are and, in response, have offered up Boomerang as one of the best I've seen only to receive blank stares from those around me. Thing is, it's not like I'm playing pretentious...

Plans to make a Jimi Hendrix biopic starring Outkast's Andre 3000 may have hit a snag: The family of the late rock legend is against it, saying that they won't allow rights to the music. "[The Estate] has made it known many times in the past that no such film, were it to include original music or copyrights created by Jimi Hendrix, can be undertaken without its full participation.” That said, Experience Hendrix doesn't necessarily oppose all projects, it just won't sanction any films without the group's approval. Entourage is back, as season 7 premiered last night with the episode "Stunted." Let's discuss what happened character by character.
Vince - I'm not sure how much time has passed since the end of season 6, but Vince is back from filming the Ferrari movie in Italy, and he's already working on a new action film directed by Nick Cassavetes. After seeing a take of one of the stunts, Cassavetes is worried about using a stuntman in a future chase scene, and tells Vince he thinks he should do it himself. Despite doubts from everyone around him, Vince decides to do the stunt (with Cassavetes filming from inside the same car). When he lands the jump, the brakes fail and Vince crashes into part of the set. Although he tells everyone he's physically fine and willing to do another take, it's clear that he's shaken by what just happened.

The film industry may be currently going through a crisis, but it's got nothing on the music biz. Over the past decade, there was a paradigm shift in the industry and huge, fundamental changes in the way people discover, buy and listen to music. Ten years ago, the idea that everyone would cease going to record stores to flip through plastic discs and would instead buy music digitally, completely devoid of a physical medium, only existed in a fringe world called Napster.
Now record stores are all but gone, and the album as an art form exists only in the fringe world of purists. We've become slaves to the mp3 single and the little sweatshop-produced devices we rely on to listen to them. The new Luddite is just the poor iPhoneless wretch who manages to get by with only a BlackBerry.
The volume of music has changed too, in both decibels and quantity.
