Mufasa: The Lion King is continuing to roar its way to success. The latest Lion King movie has thrived in a slow January, competing against a small field consisting of Sonic the Hedgehog 3, Nosferatu, Den of Thieves 2: Pantera, and several other new releases. Wolf Man and One of Them Days were poised to top the box office over the holiday weekend. Even with Martin Luther King Day offering a chance for a booming box office, it has been a slow week. Still, despite only a trickle at the box office, Disney's lions are thriving.
According to a report by Variety, the Lion King prequel is expected to end the weekend with $209.8 million domestically and $588.4 million worldwide. With that total, it has officially become the 10th 2024 movie to reach the $200 million milestone domestically. It sits ahead of Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, which earned $196 million, and just behind Sonic 3's $218 million total.

The beginning of the year is usually a quieter time for movie releases, and January 2025 is no exception. Although there are some exciting new releases, a 2024 blockbuster has managed to climb back to the top of the box office this weekend. In an interesting turn of events, Mufasa: The Lion King is the number-one film at the box office this past weekend, in a MLK holiday weekend box office haul that is one of the lowest in years.
According to a box office report from Deadline, the CGI Disney prequel directed by Barry Jenkins beat out new releases in a weekend that was the second lowest of the last ten years, not counting 2021, which was during the Covid-19 pandemic. Mufasa took in $16.5 million over the past four days, while the Keke Palmer and Sza-led comedy One of Them Days took the number 2 spot with around $14-15 million, barely losing out to the Disney film.

Mufasa: The Lion King has hit a major milestone that pushes it much closer to profitability after three weekends. The 2024 movie is a prequel to Disney's photorealistic CG-animated 2019 remake, following the origin story of the future king Mufasa (Aaron Pierre). The Mufasa: The Lion King release hit an early snag in its opening weekend when it fell severely below its original projections, earning just $35.4 million in North America and taking No. 2 behind the other new release, Sonic the Hedgehog 3.
Per Variety, as of Sunday morning, Mufasa: The Lion King is projected to close out its third weekend in theaters with a cumulative box office total of $476 million worldwide. This makes it just the 10th movie of the year to pass the $475 million milestone and leaves it neck and neck with the current No. 9 movie of 2024, Venom: The Last Dance ($476.8 million). While Mufasa: The Lion King might not have been a prequel anyone asked for, there were certainly aspects of the film that made it a worthwhile watch. The movie follows the origin story of Mufasa (Aaron Pierre) and chronicles his days as a young cub before he became the king everyone remembers. After losing his parents during a flash flood, Mufasa finds himself far away from home where he meets Taka (Kelvin Harrison Jr.), the prince of a nearby pride. Alone and without his family, Mufasa is adopted by Eshe (Thandiwe Newton), Taka’s mother, which subsequently made the cubs de facto brothers. Elated with their new sibling, Mufasa and Taka grow up side by side and remain loyal to one another for most of their lives. However, Taka eventually grows to become Scar, which ultimately casts a sad shadow on the entire narrative of the film.

Mufasa: The Lion King's soundtrack, composed by Lin-Manuel Miranda, brings new life to the beloved franchise with a catchy and emotional score. Miranda’s signature style shines through, blending powerful African melodies with more contemporary elements that fit quite well with the iconic Disney story. While it might not be one of the best soundtracks featured in Disney movies, it still brings a lot of heart and energy, giving fans something fresh to enjoy from The Lion King universe.
Among the standout tracks, "Bye Bye" and "I Always Wanted A Brother" truly shine as the best of the collection. Capturing the emotional core of the 2024 Lion King installment, all the songs, but especially these two, elevate the legendary tale to a modern story worth giving a watch. With refreshingly brilliant deliveries from the cast, the soundtrack is a must-listen for anyone who loves The Lion King movies.

One of Hollywood’s most promising names in the past decade has been Lin-Manuel Miranda. After his stunning success on Broadway, dozens of films have called up the songwriter for his expertise. This has been great for the musician and actor, who racked up an Emmy win, five Emmy nominations, and two Oscar nominations since 2017. Miranda’s latest contribution to Disney comes with Mufasa: The Lion King. Building on the foundation of Disney’s iconic franchise, Miranda finds himself in the Oscar race once again. Meanwhile, with visual effects awards in flux, Mufasa hopes to hear its name on Oscar nomination morning in more than one category.

Mufasa: The Lion King is a prequel/sequel to 2019's The Lion King, itself a remake of the 1994 animated classic. Mufasa sees Rafiki telling the story of Mufasa (Aaron Pierre) to his granddaughter, Kiara (Blue Ivy Carter). Kiara and the audience learn how Mufasa became king of the Pride Lands, how his brother Scar, formerly named Taka (Kelvin Harrison Jr.), got his namesake, and how a rift grew between the brothers.
Mufasa's main antagonist is Kiros (Mads Mikkelsen), a white lion who looks to kill every bloodline so that he is the true Lion King. Mufasa: The Lion King's intent with Kiros is a commentary on colonization, but there might be another underlying reason behind making the villain of a Lion King movie, specifically a white lion. It all comes back to a popular manga, one that many have accused Disney of ripping off. While Disney has denied these claims,...

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 gave theaters an early Christmas present this weekend, opening ahead of expectations with a $62 million domestic debut. That’s the second-best December start ever for a PG pic since The Chronicles of Narnia: The Witch, the Lion and the Wardrobe almost 20 years ago in 2005, not adjusted for inflation.
That’s no small feat, especially considering Sonic 3 went up against Hollywood’s most formidable purveyor of PG fare — Disney. After a string of mega wins this year, the studio hit a bump with Mufasa: The Lion King, which came in notably behind expectations with a domestic debut of $35 million. Not that Disney has nothing to crow about; the studio has crossed the $5 billion mark in global ticket sales. It’s the first time any studio has done so since before the pandemic, and the sixth time Disney has done so since 2010.

Mufasa: The Lion King is Disney's big release for the holiday season. Releasing five years after the photorealistic remake The Lion King, Mufasa is a prequel directed by Barry Jenkins, the Academy Award-winning director of Moonlight. Mufasa: The Lion King explores the bond between Mufasa and his adopted brother Taka (Kelvin Harrison Jr.), the lion who will become Scar. It also covers how Mufasa met his future wife Sarabi (Tiffany Boone), Mandrill friend and spiritual advisor Rafiki (Kagiso Lediga and John Kani as the younger and older version), and future advisor Zazu (Preston Nyman).
Since Mufasa: The Lion King is a prequel, audiences know where the story will go. Yet the film recontextualizes some previous elements from The Lion King, giving them new depth. Combined with a framing device set after The Lion King, Mufasa might hint at Lion King 3...one that could combine two of The Lion King's most popular continuations.

2019's remake of Disney's The Lion King (1994) might have made bank at the box office, but many felt that it was essentially a shot-for-shot rehash of the original animated feature. However, Disney might remedy this stigma with a new origin story for Mufasa and Scar in Mufasa: The Lion King (2024)
The new film opens a new chapter on the Lion King mythos, and features a perspective on the story generations of Disney fans are so overtly familiar with, but can it break the stigma surrounding Disney's live-action remakes? What’s Good: The film’s visual fidelity is impressive, making it look like real animals are being filmed.
What’s Bad: The film lacks any meaningful justification for its existence, making the story feel rushed and slow. There is no clear vision.

With Christmas less than a week away, the “Mouse House” has decided to send another family-friendly flick into the multiplexes to share space with its recent “box-office behemoth” Moana 2 (which is still in the number one spot). Oh, and this is somewhat of a sequel, too. When the Marvel Cinematic Universe made a huge cinematic splash, many studios wanted to create their own versions of a “brand”. Naturally Warner Brothers had their DC Comics line (which is getting a big “re-do”) and Universal keeps attempting a “Dark Universe’ based on those classic monsters (The Wolf Man is on the way next year). And though Marvel is a partner, Disney itself is “getting into the act” with their legacy of classic animated tales, the twist being that they’re being remade in “live-action”. This new film is unique in that it is “technically” an animated film with pixels replacing the...

The year-end holiday marquee isn’t as crowded this year as it usually is, and there’s no Star Wars or Avatar, but Hollywood studios believe there’s still enough merriment to be had at the box office.
The action officially gets underway Dec. 20 when Paramount’s Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and Disney’s Mufasa: The Lion King debut at the domestic office. Both films are rated PG, a huge advantage in terms of attracting families.

Lin-Manuel Miranda reveals the one regret he has about the Mufasa: The Lion King music. Miranda is the composer of this Lion King spinoff musical, which is set for release this week on December 20. The film is both a sequel and prequel, chronologically. It tells the story of Mufasa's early days in the Pride Lands while also weaving in the tale of Simba and Nala and their cub, Kiara. Mufasa: The Lion King features a leading voice cast including Aaron Pierre, Kelvin Harrison Jr., Tiffany Boone, Kagiso Lediga, Billy Eichner, Blue Ivy Carter, Donald Glover, and Beyoncé.
In an exclusive interview with ScreenRant, Miranda speaks about his one Mufasa music regret. In his interview, the Hamilton creator was asked about what songs were cut from the movie. He answered that his "only regret is [he] didn't get to write a tune for Billy Eichner, who has an incredible voice." While...

Jon Favreau’s photorealistic remake of The Lion King from 2019, like many of the other various live-action Disney remakes over the years, offered no real justification for its existence beyond being a showcase for the impressive technology powering the animation. Which makes Barry Jenkins’s Mufasa: The Lion King, a prequel to 1994’s The Lion King, all the more impressive for actually having something worthwhile to impart to audiences.
Mufasa, unbound by having to recreate large swaths of the original Lion King whole cloth, was clearly allowed to be a product of its director. Yes, it features big cats that talk and sing, but it’s fundamentally the story of an orphan, Mufasa (Aaron Pierre), who transcends hardship to lead those in his community. By forging a closer relationship with his loving adoptive mother, Afia (Anika Noni Rose), rather than his abusive adoptive father, Obasi (Lennie James), Mufasa develops the...

The first thing you see on screen in Mufasa: The Lion King, Disney’s latest attempt to squeeze another billion or so out of its gift that keeps on giving on stage and screen, is a dedication to the late, great James Earl Jones, who of course provided the regal voice of Mufasa in both the classic 1994 animated film, and its 2019 live-action remake. It is also a reminder that it would be near impossible to try to replace the presence of Jones, and smartly — especially if you are hellbent on adding to the franchise — director Barry Jenkins and screenwriter Jeff Nathanson have not tried to do that.
Instead what we have is an origin tale, the harrowing journey of a seemingly orphaned cub Mufasa (Braelyn Rankins voicing the young version) trying to survive the elements on his own after being separated from his parents due to a sudden raging river taking him on top of,...

Mufasa: The Lion King is set to hit screens in just over a week. However, Billy Eichner already has some ideas for a spinoff.
Speaking to ComicBook, Eichner, who narrates the movie as wise-cracking meerkat Timon opposite Seth Rogen's Pumbaa, said he would love to expand on the liberties taken by his characters while telling the story. "I want a musical - why stop at shorts?" the actor joked. "I love playing Timon, and I love working with Seth Rogen. I would do anything with Seth and these characters. It's so fun to work with him, and when we're in the studio it doesn't feel that different than working on a more traditional live-action movie."

Dana Abercrombie, entertainment editor for The Koalition, praised the film as “a story that deserves to be told that makes you question what is destiny. Disney’s “Mufasa: The Lion King” begins with the voice of James Earl Jones, followed by a title card that reads, “In Remembrance.”
Jones, who died in September at 93 years old, originated the voice of King Mufasa in the 1994 Oscar-winning animated feature “The Lion King,” its direct-to-video sequels and the 2019 live-action remake. Jones did not return for the prequel, which opens in theaters on Dec. 20.
Barry Jenkins, who helmed “Mufasa,” tells Variety why he decided to open the movie with a tribute to the late actor. “When I think about what James Earl Jones means, not even just to me, but to global audiences — people know this — I grew up without a father figure, and you go in and you watch this art, you watch these films, sometimes these fathers in these movies become a stand-in for that,” he says. “They become these father figures.”

Ever since the 2019 remake of The Lion King hit screens there have been various discussions about its classification. With the upcoming prequel Mufasa: The Lion King just a few weeks away, director Barry Jenkins has weighed in on the animation vs. live-action debate.
"Absolutely, yeah, it's an animated film," Jenkins told GamesRadar+ when asked to categorize his new movie and its predecessor. "I am communicating constantly with these animators who are trying to manipulate these somewhat photorealistic sort of models in a way that is expressive. And so because of that, I don't think of it as live action. I do think of it as animation. It's just a very different tool," the filmmaker explained.

Eight new character posters for Mufasa: The Lion King have found their way online this morning (via Toonado.com) along with a new featurette to celebrate tickets for the live-action prequel going on sale.
"Taka" will, of course, eventually be known as the villainous Scar, but it's Kiros who we expected to be this movie's big bad. We also see fan-favourites like Timon and Pumba, Rafiki, and Zazu.

Today, Disney released the final trailer for the upcoming “Mufasa: The Lion King” film. This live-action film is set to be a prequel to “The Lion King.”
This new story tells how Mufasa became the Lion King. Many have had some issues with the trailers indicating that Mufasa was an orphan, when in “The Lion King,” that did not seem to be the case. However, they might explain it in the movie.

Disney has unveiled the newest trailer for Mufasa: The Lion King, which tries to justify its existence by being filled with lore from other Lion King movies while also addressing previous criticisms of the franchise. 2019's The Lion King was one of the biggest films of all time, not adjusted for inflation, as it is the tenth highest-grossing movie ever with $1.6 billion. It certainly wasn't shocking that Disney decided to greenlight a sequel, despite the 2019 remake facing heavy criticism at its release. It has only grown as more audience members seemingly get tired of Disney's attempts to remake their animated classics.
At D23 Brazil, Disney unveiled the latest trailer for Mufasa: The Lion King, which will play in theaters before Moana 2. The trailer showcases the young Mufasa (Aaron Pierre) and his adoptive brother Taka (Kelvin Harrison Jr.), who will eventually grow up to become the villainous Scar, as they...

Director Barry Jenkins shared a brand-new trailer for Mufasa: The Lion King at D23 Brazil. The upcoming prequel tells the origin of Mufasa, the lion who will one day become king of the Pride Lands.
“Exploring the unlikely rise of the beloved king of the Pride Lands, ‘Mufasa: The Lion King’ enlists Rafiki to relay the legend of Mufasa to young lion cub Kiara, daughter of Simba and Nala, with Timon and Pumbaa lending their signature schtick,” reads the synopsis. “Told in flashbacks, the story introduces Mufasa as an orphaned cub, lost and alone until he meets a sympathetic lion named Taka—the heir to a royal bloodline. The chance meeting sets in motion an expansive journey of an extraordinary group of misfits searching for their destiny—their bonds will be tested as they work together to evade a threatening and deadly foe.“

Disney has just dropped the final trailer for Barry Jenkins' Mufasa: The Lion King (via Toonado.com) featuring younger versions of characters like Mufasa, Scar, Sarabi, Rafiki and Zazu before they called Pride Rock home.
Just like 2019's The Lion King, this movie looks visually stunning; the main difference here is that we're getting an original story rather than what many felt was little more than a shot-for-shot remake of the 1994 cartoon from filmmaker Jon Favreau.
Similar to this summer's awesome Transformers One, it looks like we'll meet many familiar characters in their early years and watch as the friendship between Mufasa and Taka (a.k.a. Scar) crumbles and ends with them becoming bitter enemies.

"You expect us to follow this hallucinating baboon?!" Nah she's right. At D23 Brazil, Disney unveiled their third & final trailer for the Mufasa: The Lion King movie, from director Barry Jenkins (of Moonlight & If Beale Street Could Talk). The story about the rise of one of the greatest kings of the Pride Lands, returns to the African savanna where Rafiki tells Kiara about her grandfather. Told in flashbacks, we're introduced to Mufasa as an orphaned cub, lost & alone until he meets a sympathetic lion named Taka—the heir to a royal bloodline. The chance meeting sets in motion a lively journey of an extraordinary group of misfits searching for their destiny. This isn't so much The Lion King 2, more of a prequel + sequel combined. With the voices of Aaron Pierre as Mufasa and Kelvin Harrison Jr. as Taka, plus all the usuals: Seth Rogen as Pumbaa, Billy Eichner as Timon,...
