The Grammy-winning rock band Paramore slammed Tennessee’s Republican-led House of Representatives and accused lawmakers of “blatant racism.”

The band’s objection stems from the fact that a resolution honoring singer-songwriter Allison Russell‘s recent Grammy win was blocked, while a similar measure for Paramore’s win was allowed to pass.

In an Instagram Story posted on Friday, Paramore announced that they would not accept any acknowledgment or honor from the Tennessee House until Russell is given equal recognition. Lead vocalist Hayley Williams publicly condemned the “blatant racism of our state leadership” and described it as “embarrassing and cruel” in a statement.

Williams explained that state Rep. Justin Jones (D) introduced resolutions to honor Paramore and Russell for their Grammy wins.

The group accuse Tennessee’s Republican-led House of Representatives of “blatant racism” after a lawmaker paused a resolution honoring Black singer-songwriter Russell’s recent Grammy win.

The House Republican Caucus Chair who objected to the resolution honoring Russell, Rep. Jeremy Faison (R-Tenn.), claimed “The resolution wasn’t blocked” in a statement.

“When any member has a question about an item on the consent calendar, it is customary to bump it so there can be a vote solely on that item,” he said. “As a member of leadership, I had several members come to me with questions about the individual, which made it appropriate for us to press pause on that particular resolution.”

Paramore won two Grammys at the 2024 awards ceremony earlier this month.

Following Paramore’s first two Grammy wins, Tennessee Democrat State Representative Justin Jones proposed a resolution to honor the Hayley Williams-fronted group alongside first-time Grammy winner Allison Russell.

However, while the state’s House of Representatives unanimously approved the Paramore resolution, House Republican Caucus Chair Jeremy Faison objected to the Russell resolution and kicked it back to committee.

In a post on X (formerly known as Twitter) earlier this week, Jones blamed the GOP members of the chamber for blocking the Russell resolution and praised the artist, who he wrote, “has worked tirelessly to foster an inclusive Nashville through her music and continues to make Black History here in Tennessee.”

In a repost, Russell thanked Jones and Tennessee State Rep. Gloria Johnson for presenting the resolution, calling it a “high honour.”

“That the Tn GOP blocked it, I take as a compliment,” Russell added. “Their bigotry, sadly, is on relentless display.

Paramore singer Hayley Williams has called out the transparent display of racism shown by the Tennessee House of Representatives in blocking a resolution honoring fellow Grammy winner Allison Russell while allowing a similar resolution honoring her band to proceed.

In a statement to The Tennessean, Williams blasted the “blatant racism of our state leadership” while commenting on Republican Caucus Chair Jeremy Faison’s objection.

“For those that don’t know, Allison Russell is an incredibly talented musician and songwriter. Her music spans genres with strong ties to the Folk/Americana scene,” Williams said. “You might have seen her on the Grammy stage performing with the great Joni Mitchell. Oh, she is also Black. She’s a brilliant Black woman.”

Williams continued, “The blatant racism of our state leadership is embarrassing and cruel. Myself, as well as Paramore, will continue to encourage young people to show up to vote with equality in mind.

Paramore have declined a Tennessee resolution honoring the band for their recent Grammy win after the state’s House of Representatives rejected a similar resolution celebrating Allison Russell.

Earlier this week, Democratic Rep. Justin Jones introduced the two resolutions to honor the Volunteer State’s Grammy winners. While Paramore’s resolution passed through the House unencumbered, the one honoring Russell was blocked by House Republican Caucus Chair Jeremy Faison, who sent the resolution back to the committee.

Tennessee Rep. Justin Jones (D-Nashville) sought to honor a pair of Nashville-based musical acts for their Grammy wins on Monday (February 12th) with ceremonial resolutions, but only Black singer-songwriter Allison Russell received an objection from a House Republican.

Jones brought forward two resolutions to honor Russell (Best American Roots Performance) and the band Paramore (Best Rock Album and Best Alternative Music Performance). In a procedural move, House Republican Caucus Chair Jeremy Faison (R-Cosby) objected to the Russell resolution.

According to The Tennessean, Faison’s objection meant that the resolution was sent back to committee, “where objected consent items often die.” According to House rules, no debate was required for the move, meaning that Faison was not forced to express his opposition to honoring the folk musician.

While the newspaper pointed out Russell has been a vocal critic of Tennessee Republicans for their anti-lgbtq+ community legislation, so has Paramore vocalist Hayley Williams.

Tennessee state Rep. Scotty Campbell resigned on Thursday after it was revealed that the state’s House Ethics Committee had secretly convicted him of sexually harassing at least one legislative intern, a violation of the chamber’s rules. Campbell’s resignation comes on the heels of his vote to expel three of his Democratic colleagues for protesting gun violence on the House floor.

Campbell was found to have violated the chamber’s policy on workplace discrimination and harassment in March. The outcome of the investigation was largely buried from public view.

Pearson interrupted debate on the House floor by using a bullhorn to lead a protest against gun violence in the aftermath of the mass school shooting in Nashville. According to their Republican colleagues who voted to expel only Jones and Pearson on Thursday, the reps had brought “disorder and dishonor to the House of Representatives.”

On Monday, Jones got his seat back in a unanimous vote, while Pearson got his reinstated on Wednesday. So, on Wednesday night, Colbert rubbed it in.

We all know by now that slasher villains just love to kill young, scantily clad babes, which is why sorority houses makes for the absolute perfect playground for those with a penchant for wearing masks and carrying around sharp objects.  Not surprisingly, many horror movies over the years have indeed used sorority houses as their settings, from Black Christmas to The House on Sorority Row.  The latest addition to the sorority slashers sub-genre is Sorority Party Massacre, which Anchor Bay is putting out on home video early next year.

With co-directors Justin Jones and Chris W. Freeman’s horror-comedy feature Sorority Party Massacre dropping on DVD via Anchor Bay Entertainment on February 11, 2014, we caught up with the latter to garner word on what to expect of the release, as well as to shake him down on the status of the flick’s sequel Bachelorette Party Massacre, his other projects, and more.
