Scott Westerfeld, the author of the recent Netflix movie Uglies (2024), has revealed that there are already plans in place to make sequels to the now critically-panned sci-fi-outing. Speaking recently with Whats on Netflix, Westerfield revealed that the streaming giant can option all the novels in the Uglies series but, of course, it all depends on the viewership numbers.
Yes, my deal with Anonymous allows them to adapt all of the books in both quadrilogies. It seems like weve got a great base of views to have at least a couple of sequels made, as long as people keep watching!
Directed by McG and written by Jacob Forman, Vanessa Taylor, and Whit Anderson, Uglies is based on the book of the same name and drops audiences into a futuristic world that imposes a cosmetic surgery at 16. Here, we follow Tally, who is eager for her turn to join the rest of society.

After spending years in development hell, Netflix finally released Uglies in September 2024, but the movie was actually filmed three years later in one city (and its surrounding areas) in the United States. The science fiction drama, directed by McG and written by Jacob Forman, Vanessa Taylor, and Whit Anderson, is an adaptation of Scott Festerfeld's 2005 book Uglies. It follows Joey King's Tally Youngblood, a young teenager on the precipice of turning 16. When she does, Tally will finally be able to become a "Pretty" by undergoing the same surgery that everyone has when they reach 16 years old.
Netflix hasn't announced that an Uglies sequel is in development yet. However, the science fiction drama's cliffhanger ending (mixed with the fact that the film sits at the top of Netflix's charts) suggests that the story will continue with adaptations of the next two books in Scott Westerfeld's Uglies series Pretties and Specials.

Most of the young characters in Uglies do not live with their parents, including Joey King's Tally Youngblood. The Netflix science fiction drama film, directed by McG and written by Jacob Forman, Vanessa Taylor, and Whit Anderson, is based on Scott Westerfeld's 2005 book Uglies. Of course, the movie makes some changes to the original story, but one thing that remains the same is the "Uglies" relationship with their parents.
Although Netflix hasn't greenlit an Uglies sequel yet, the film's ending suggests that the story will continue with adaptations of Scott Westerfeld's Pretties and Specials.
As seen in Joey King's new Netflix sci-fi movie, Tally, Peris, Shay, and the rest of the young characters under 16 are considered "Ugly." When they turn 16, though, they undergo a procedure to make them "Pretty." Once they do so, they are allowed to join the rest of the "Pretties" in the City. Until then,...

Harry Potter, Frodo Baggins, and Katniss Everdeen move aside. It is time to introduce a new hero, but, in this case, her spirit and mindset might already be flourishing in people all around the world. The recently released movie, Uglies, which is currently ranking second in Netflixs Top 10 in the United States, spreads quite the message. Captivating at least the attention of anyone who is interested in YA book-to-movie adaptations, the Netflix movie might also be of interest to social media users, especially those who are occasionally making use of various beauty filters.
Set in a futuristic dystopian world, Uglies centers on the life of Tally Youngblood. The teenager has spent the past few years of her life longing for a specific day that society presents as becoming worthy of the wonders that life holds. During her wait, she forms friendships, some even unexpected, wants nothing more than to become pretty,...

Instagram, TikTok, Snapchat. The list of social media apps that encourage the use of different filters is growing. Not too long ago, it was fun filters giving the user bunny ears or hearts spread over their face. Now it is filters that make lips bigger and the skin softer. Some of them are even shown to cosmetic surgeons by potential patients, resulting in faces all around the world slowly but surely starting to look eerily similar. Its no wonder that the Kardashians are often referenced when it comes to the topic of cosmetic surgery and the extensive, even dangerous, use of filters.
Only recently, Netflix has released a new movie, which is supposed to unveil just that highlighting the dangers and insecure mindsets that are present on social media and spread through society like poison. Whether it is the chilling depiction of perfect humans who look like a walking Instagram...

In one of those only at Netflix moments, acclaimed action thriller Rebel Ridge has been replaced at the top of the Netflix movie chart by futuristic sci-fi movie Uglies (2024), which has had shade thrown at it from all angles since its debut on Friday.

Spoiler Alert: This post contains spoilers for the movie Uglies.
Scott Westerfeld’s Uglies has made it to the big screen at long last.
After its publication in 2005, the first novel of four by the author gathered a big readership as a precursor to YA dystopia stories like The Hunger Games, Divergent, The Maze Runner and more. The story follows Tally Youngblood, who lives in a society that values face symmetry over anything else. All citizens within the society receive a mandatory surgical operation that makes them “pretty,” evening out their facial flaws and physiques.
Throughout the books, Tally gets an outside perspective on the operation that she once wanted more than anything else, first from a community of rebels who have escaped various cities to live a simpler life in a community they call The Smoke. Plot: In a futuristic world that imposes a cosmetic surgery at 16, Tally is eager for her turn to join the rest of society. But when a friend runs away, Tally embarks on a journey to save her that upends everything she thought she wanted.
Review: After Harry Potter and The Hunger Games were adapted for the big screen, every studio wanted to launch a franchise based on a Young Adult book series. While Twilight was the biggest success, countless other series were met with lukewarm receptions yet still delivered multiple sequels. It has been several years since The Maze Runner, Percy Jackson, and Divergent stopped adding to their intellectual property while countless others failed to get past an initial entry. Based on the 2005 novel of the same name by Scott Westerfeld, Uglies is Netflix’s belated attempt to attract the YA audience with what is intended to be the first in a potential quadrilogy.

An empty and exasperating teen book adaptation, set in a future where beautiful people rule the world, is one of the year’s most pointless films
It’s been a few years since Hollywood’s rush for young adult dystopian franchises, from The Hunger Games to Divergent to The Maze Runner. Which makes Uglies, a new Netflix adaptation of Scott Westerfeld’s 2005 novel intended to kick off a new trilogy, already feel out of time. The exceedingly derivative film, directed by McG (Netflix’s Babysitter: Killer Queen) clearly tries to evoke its famous precedents, even hiring Divergent screenwriter Vanessa Taylor, along with Jacob Forman and Whit Anderson, for a script that takes broad swipes at the predominant dystopian YA themes: physical and emotional change, staying true to one’s values, remembering who the real enemy is.
Credit to Uglies for this: in the year 2024, plastic surgery and a beauty standard...

Do you, by chance, remember when director McG made good movies? Yeah, I know, me neither. And his latest, Uglies, won’t disprove that point. It is hard to believe that the man who cut his teeth directing Sugar Ray music videos has successfully made movies for nearly a quarter of a century.
Yes, cinema is a visual medium, but McG has always focused more on aesthetics. From the Charlie’s Angels franchise to family fare like Rim of the World and Family Switch, he emphasizes vain visuals instead of character depth and a good story.
McG may have finally found a film that tackles those sensibilities with Netflix’s latest Joey King vehicle. Uglies is a grossly digitally enhanced, special effects-driven, inefficacious streaming film whose themes are so wide of the mark that it practically becomes conceited.

After her best friend Peris (Chase Stokes) has a change in personality following his surgery, Tally Youngblood (Joey King) joins a rebel group called "The Smoke" who lives off the grid and accept themselves as they are, which include Tally's new best friend Shay (Brianne Tju) and their rebel leader, David (Keith Powers). Tally eventually uncovers a dark secret about the world she had been raised in and looks to change the world, facing off against Dr. Cable (Laverne Cox), the creator of this cosmetic surgery.

Even in a world where unrealistic photo filters have messed with our heads, Joey King (“A Family Affair”) wouldn’t be considered anything less than pretty with her lagoon-blue eyes and youthful complexion. But in the realm of “Uglies,” director McG’s (“Charlie’s Angels”) halfhearted screen adaptation of Scott Westerfeld’s 2005 young-adult novel, her character Tally Youngblood’s objective attractiveness is irrelevant. That’s because being pretty means something entirely different in the reality that she lives, one that exists several hundred years after the demise of our own.
In that unnamed future, everyone at the age of 16 mandatorily goes through a surgical procedure to become their best-looking selves—a coming-of-age day as spiritual as getting one’s period or being celebrated at a teenage-centric religious custom. Until then, you’re stuck in an educational institution with the rest of “the uglies.”

Beauty is pain, but then again, so is heartache. The current film trend of 2024 are stories of women seeking perfection by any means necessary: Demi Moore risks turning into a crone for the sake of revitalizing her career in Cannes breakout film “The Substance,” Kate Hudson plays a shady cosmetics guru who may or may not be experimenting on clients in the name of eternal youth for “Shell,” and Elizabeth Banks loses her business — and her mind — in “Skincare” as a struggling facialist who is attempting to carve out her own space in the ever-changing beauty industry.
Now, Joey King is adding to the film landscape with “Uglies.” Despite not being the product of an original script like those other, aforementioned features, “Uglies” feels distinctly prescient in this era of influencers, filters, and — of course — discussions of what it means to get older as a woman.

Uglies has the potential to redeem Divergent's failures. Divergent's fourth film was canceled, leaving the franchise unfinished. Uglies and Divergent share similar sci-fi dystopian themes and young female protagonists, but Uglies has a leg up on Divergent.
Joey King plays the protagonist in Uglies, an upcoming Netflix sci-fi movie, and based on the trailer and premise, it has the potential to right one past franchise's wrongs. The 2024 film, directed by McG and written by Jacob Forman, Vanessa Taylor, and Whit Anderson, is based on Scott Westerfeld's 2005 young adult sci-fi book of the same name. Shortly following the novel's publication, a movie inspired by its story was announced. However, Uglies remained in production hell until 2020, when McG and King signed on to the project, and four years later, the Uglies film adaptation is finished and ready for release.

Move over Millie Bobby Brown, Netflix has a new favourite star! Okay, no, we're not tempting the wrath of someone who can melt our brains from the inside out, merely making the point that Joey King is now in another movie for the streaming service, following quickly on from A Family Affair. Joey King is finally getting her “Divergent” and “Hunger Games”-esque YA-novel adaptation.
The “Kissing Booth” trilogy’s alum and “The Act” breakout star leads “Uglies,” set in a world where teens are tracked down and forced to undergo plastic surgery to be their most “perfect” selves. Players relies on tired rom-com tropes without creating believable chemistry between its leads. The film lacks suspense as viewers immediately know the end-game couple, resulting in a lack of tension. Outdated workplace views and lack of genuine connection hinder Players' ability to resonate with audiences.
Netflix recently unveiled its most recent contribution to the romantic comedy sub-genre with Players, a by-the-numbers example of why the rom-com has mostly been regulated to streaming services rather than receiving a theatrical release. Something like Anyone But You, which has been remarkably successful financially, has a hook and combustible chemistry between its leads to stand out among the crowd, but Players is more of the same and won't do rom-coms any favors if they hope to consistently reclaim their box office supremacy.

Players is a successful rom-com on Netflix with a unique twist on a character from a popular sitcom. In Players, Adam is a confident and subtle character in contrast to Coach from New Girl. Coach from New Girl left after season 4, while Adam and Mack end up together at the end of Players.
Netflix’s newest romantic comedy, Players, is a subtle 180 of a character from a very popular sitcom. Netflix’s catalog of movies from different genres keeps expanding every week, and among its most recent and successful additions is Players. Directed by Trish Sie and written by Whit Anderson, Players takes viewers to New York City to meet Mack (Gina Rodriguez), a sportswriter who, along with her friends, comes up with elaborate but successful hook-up schemes to help each other get dates and more.
One day, Mack meets Nick (Tom Ellis), a war correspondent and author who she’s very attracted to.

Mack, the sly protagonist of Netflix’s endearing new rom-com Players, always closes. The 33-year-old journalist has a back pocket stuffed with plays that rarely fail. Want to convince the stranger at the bar that you can offer her the world? Or bag your next-door neighbor? Mack and her friends can walk you through the moves, honed over 12 years, to force an interaction.
The plays work well because Mack, Adam (Damon Wayans Jr.), Brannagan (Augustus Prew) and Ryan aka “Little” (Joel Courtney) are committed to research. Establishing a play requires a careful assessment of the target, the situation and the context. The plays can always help you land a steamy bar make-out, a one-night stand or maybe even a date. What they can’t do, Mack learns, is get you into a relationship.
Players, directed by Trish Sie, is the kind of romantic comedy that wears the conventions of its genre proudly.

Players fails to critique dating culture, instead celebrating and glamorizing shallow hook-up schemes. The film lacks depth and realistic characterizations, focusing on unfunny humor rather than quality storytelling. Despite the efforts of the talented cast, Players is a forgettable rom-com that disappoints with its rushed and undeserved ending.
It’s Valentine’s Day Week, and there are plenty of old and new rom-coms to look forward to, with Netflix also releasing its latest romantic comedy, Players, starring Jane the Virgin's Gina Rodriguez. Written by Whit Anderson and directed by Trish Sie, the story sees Mack (Rodriguez), an outgoing sports reporter, who develops schemes to land one-night stands. When she starts falling in love with her latest play, Mack intends to turn her latest interest into a long-term relationship. As far as rom-coms go, Players barks up a creative tree, but this story is about as trashy as they come.

Many romantic comedies utilize deception as a key plot point. However, for every film that incorporates an inciting fib with smarts and heart (from “While You Were Sleeping” to “You’ve Got Mail”), there are others that lack a similar savvy finesse (like “How To Lose A Guy in 10 Days” and “The Wedding Date”). “Players” competes in the latter league. Acting as a dumbed-down, gender-swapped kissing cousin to “Hitch,” it centers on a gal and her pals who know all the right moves to land hookups. Director Trish Sie’s middling and at times mawkish film not only makes us hate the game, but also its players.

Coming alive to the thrill of pure power: the ability to hurt or even kill by releasing electrical jolts from their fingertips, they rapidly learn they can awaken the Power in older women. Soon enough nearly every woman in the world can do it. And then everything is different.

Leslie Mann will star as one of four protagonists in Amazon's 10-episode adaptation of Naomi Alderman's The Power.
Amazon is turning Naomi Alderman's feminist science fiction novel The Power into a 10-episode series, with a stellar lead and talented director. According to Deadline, Leslie Mann has been cast as the lead in the adaptation, with Reed Morano (The Handmaid's Tale) behind the camera in the director's seat.
Alderman is adapting her own novel for the screen, along with an all-female writers' room, which is pretty damn awesome. The team will include: Claire Wilson, Sarah Quintrell, Whit Anderson, Stacy Osei-Kuffour and novelist Rebecca Levene (The Hollow Gods Trilogy).
The Power is set in a world where women suddenly develop the ability to release electrical jolts from their hand, leading them to become the dominant gender over men. The novel avoids essentializing women as nurturing, empathetic leaders,...

Sarah Michelle Gellar has revealed that she would be interested in a Buffy the Vampire Slayer movie.
The actress told E! Online that although it was unlikely for the Joss Whedon fantasy series to hit the big screen, she would sign up if the script was good enough.
When asked about the possibility of a film, she replied: "Joss and I always talk about [a movie]. But the thing with Buffy is that Buffy was a movie, and it ultimately didn't work as a film.
"And I mean, we had such miles to overcome when we were trying to do a TV show based on a movie.
"And one of the reasons is that the story works better over time. If there was ever the right story, we would do it."
Buffy the Vampire Slayer was originally a 1992 movie starring Kristy Swanson, before Whedon adapted his script into a TV series. It...

In Cannes to receive the 2013 Pioneer Prize at the International Digital Emmy Awards tonight, CSI franchise creator Anthony E. Zuiker talked about NBC drama pilot Wonderland during a Q&A this afternoon. Zuiker, who’s exec producing the series, said the Whit Anderson-scripted show will follow Alice and a new character, Clara. Clara is “having the worst day of her life” when she is sent to Wonderland where it turns out her father has been living for several years. To get her life back on track, Clara must rise up against Wonderland’s reigning Queen, the woman once known as Alice. Deadline recently reported that the pilot will not be produced within the regular pilot season because of the scale and complexity of the production. Zuiker also spoke about Cybergeddon, the series for which he’s being honored here at Mip-tv. The online thriller launched on Yahoo in September...
