In 2022, Baz Luhrman gave us the electric, excessive musical biopic "Elvis," charting the iconic musician's life in a movie that embraced an almost comic book-like aesthetic. Then, in 2023, we got the much more restrained and contemplative "Priscilla," which focused on Priscilla Presley and Elvis' relationship and their 1967 to 1973 marriage.
With "Priscilla," director Sofia Coppola both romanticizes and criticizes Elvis, telling the story from Priscilla's point of view, based on her own 1985 book "Elvis & Me." Luhrman's film famously catapulted Austin Butler to mega stardom, while Coppola's film starred Cailee Spaeny as Priscilla and Jacob Elordi as the King. While the two films couldn't be more different in terms of tone, there are as you might expect several similarities.

Exclusive: Director Adam Volerich is poised to add to the canon of Christmas cinema with Drink and Be Merry, an indie dramedy starring Yellowstone‘s Jefferson White, which has wrapped production in New York.
Others in the cast of the film, marking Volerich’s feature debut, include Siobhan Fallon Hogan (SNL), Sophie Zucker (Dickinson), Griffin Newman (The Tick), Delaney Williams (The Wire), Billy Smith (The Departed), Brian Anthony Wilson (The Wire), Pamela Jayne Morgan (The Holdovers), Shawn Christensen (Curfew), Casey Wortmann (FBI: Most Wanted) and Wharton Tract.
Pic is set at a struggling New York dive bar in the days leading up to Christmas, 2019. Its protagonist, Chet (White), is a beleaguered bartender in a state of extended arrested development, who must balance taking care of his misanthropic, aging regulars — who have nowhere else to go, and rely on him for far more than pouring drinks — with his naive desires to muster some Christmas spirit.

Viewers who watched Elvis or Priscilla may have noticed that in both movies, the King of Rock and Roll refers to his mother and his wife by the same pet name, Satnin, though its meaning isn't immediately made clear in either film. The 2020s have already been a big decade for Elvis Presley, with two major films coming out about the rock star. Elvis stars an ensemble cast including Austin Butler, Tom Hanks, Olivia Dejonge, and it came out in 2022. Priscilla is told from the eponymous woman's (played by Cailee Spaeny) point-of-view and premiered in 2023.

The Paramount+ original documentary “Superpower,” co-directed by Sean Penn and Aaron Kaufman, is available to stream for free on the official Paramount+ YouTube channel. The documentary will be available in the United States and its territories, including Bermuda, free of charge for a year on the platform.
The documentary is centered on Ukraine’s fight to maintain freedom from Russia after Russia invaded and attacked Kyiv on Feb. 24, 2022. The film spans seven trips over a nearly two-year time frame, in which Penn conducted a series of interviews with Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky and others.
The project, which started filming in late 2021, originally began as a piece on Zelensky and his rise from comedic actor to president. But, once the buildup of Russian troops on the border began, the documentary shifted tone. The film became a look at a wartime president and his country’s defense of freedom against the threat of invasion.

When it comes to being a movie star, Sean Penn knows a thing or two, and it’s one of the reasons he took a vested interest in Ukraine’s Volodymyr Zelensky. “We’d originally set out to tell the whimsical tale of a real-world president who had been a comedy superstar in a series about a rural history teacher who becomes a president, only later to actually become one,” Penn says in the documentary Superpower, which is set to premiere Monday, September 18, on Paramount+. (Credit: Courtesy of Paramount+) Heading to Ukraine in 2022, Penn met with the comedic actor-turned-president Zelensky. What began as a curiosity, transformed into something much more intense amid the rising stakes. “When Billy Smith and I set out to make this film, there had been no recent signs of accelerated threat to Ukraine by Russia,” Penn clarifies in the doc he teamed up to make with friend and fellow actor Smith.

The two-part “30 for 30” documentary on the seminal 1990s competition show “American Gladiators” has now concluded, wrapping up an epic saga that cut right to the core of the American Dream.
The documentary dove deep into the largely unknown history of the show, which dominated the TV landscape in its initial run in syndication on US television and around the world. It revealed stories of love, lust, betrayal, friendship, injury, agony, and everything in between from the creators of the show and the Gladiators themselves.
So how did a nearly three-hour doc about a show famous for events like jousting with things that looked like huge cotton swabs and rolling around in giant steel balls called Atlaspheres come together? According to the doc’s director Ben Berman, he was skeptical when initially approached by Vice about the project but changed his mind once he learned more about the story.

On the day that Russia invaded Ukraine on Feb. 24, 2022, Sean Penn and a gonzo documentary camera crew found themselves on the frontlines of war as they waited to see if they could interview Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
Not only did he land that interview, but he continued to travel back to Ukraine to chronicle the horrors of war a total of six times for “Superpower,” a documentary Penn co-directed that premiered to a standing ovation at the Berlin Film Festival on Friday.
In the nearly two-hour-long film, produced by Vice, Penn underlines America’s shortcomings in supporting Ukraine in the war. Zelenskyy, who grows increasingly comfortable around the Oscar-winning actor in a series of interviews, reveals his frustrations at the lack of support in the form of high-impact weapons received from the Biden administration.
In a post-screening Q&a, Penn echoed Zelenskyy’s concerns. “It’s not so much about what if Ukraine loses,...

Sean Penn went to war and a movie broke out. That is, in effect, the story behind the making of the documentary “Superpower,” a gripping cinematic portrait of Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky on the eve of Russian president Vladimir Putin’s military invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

Mike Bossy, a prolific goal scorer and key member of the New York Islanders teams that won four straight Stanley Cup titles in the early 1980s, has died at age 65.
The Hall of Fame player had revealed a diagnosis of lung cancer last October, stepping away from his duties as a TV analyst for Canadian network Tva in his native Quebec.
The Islanders and the NHL confirmed Bossy’s death this morning.
In a tweet, Islanders president Lou Lamoriello called Bossy “an icon not only on Long Island but across the entire hockey world. His drive to be the best every time he stepped on the ice was second to none.”
For a certain generation of sports fans, especially in New York, Bossy attained a level of fame nearly on the level of Reggie Jackson or other toasts of the championship-obsessed town. The string of four straight Cups, from 1980 to...
