Even a Little Rock can make ripples in the film industry at large. At least, that’s what Arkansas-born director Jeff Nichols and his Arkansas Cinema Society co-founder Kathryn Tucker are determined to prove by bringing Southern storytellers to the state capital each year.
The centerpiece of Acs’ activities is the annual Filmland event — somewhere between a festival and conference, for which Nichols invites friends and former colleagues to show and discuss their work — although the organization operates year-round. Acs supports the local film community, amateur and professional alike, hosting Arkansas screenings of movies that might not otherwise get adequate exposure in the state, such as Oscar best picture nominees “The Zone of Interest” and “Anatomy of a Fall.”
Eight years ago, Nichols felt the need for a centralized team to reach the local film community. “I’d taken ‘Loving’ back to Little Rock because I wanted to show it to friends and family,...

After the massive success of The Sixth Sense, M. Night Shyamalan released Unbreakable, a thriller that is now regarded by many as one of the best comic-book movies ever made. However, at the time of its release, the studio was too afraid to market it as such.
While speaking with GQ, Shyamalan reflected on the studio’s choice to market Unbreakable as another horror/thriller rather than the comic-book movie it clearly was. “If you deny what it is because you’re afraid of it being different, then you’re stealing all of its strength,” Shyamalan said. “They were like, ‘We had one of the biggest movies of all time and the same two people are making another movie. Let’s make it look like that movie.’ As opposed to what it was, which was the beginning of an entire genre. They didn’t realize it because they were too...

Banel & Adama (Ramata-Toulaye Sy)
A directorial debut programmed into the main Cannes competition is typically viewed with suspicion, if not overlooked altogether. Very rare is that lightning-in-a-bottle moment like the arrival of Son of Saul some years back. Typically, the only conversation these debuts generate is the critical debate as to why they’ve been elevated to the top of the pile when there are far more striking debuts buried deeper within the festival. This often means that accomplished films are overlooked and underappreciated by those on the ground, who may be subconsciously comparing a striking feature to the work of more established names it’s competing against for the Palme d’Or, approaching each debut with a “show me” attitude it...

Since its debut in June, Under Paris has been steadily climbing up the Netflix Top 10 list, but the shark thriller could end its run as the most popular non-English movie on the streaming service.
Under Paris is currently sitting in third place on Netflix’s most popular non-English film list with 96.6M views, behind only Society of the Snow (98.5M) and Troll (103M). The film still has roughly a month left in its 91-day premiere window, so it could easily overtake Troll to take the number one spot.

The official Under Paris synopsis reads: “After a dangerous shark nicknamed Lilith kills all of Sophia’s research colleagues, the scientist (Bérénice Bejo) gives up studying climate-related shark mutations. Brad Pitt is reportedly being eyed to star in a new untitled science fiction movie led by The Bikeriders director Jeff Nichols. The project is set up for a 2025 filming production in Arkansas after a long-gestating process.

Nichols had been attached to this after an announcement was made in 2021. Pitt being considered to join the band seemed like it was the only thing they were waiting to get the ball rolling.
Brad Pitt Is Rumored To Star In Jeff Nichols’ Alien Nation-Inspired Movie
Jeff Nichols was supposed to direct a loose remake of 1988’s Alien Nation. When Disney acquired Fox, the project fell off and was no longer on the list. The sci-fi movie was later pitched as a Disney+ series, which also did not appeal to the studio. Finally, the filmmaker decided to pick it up again as a movie.

There are plenty of movies that have yet to receive a high-definition release, but I was somewhat surprised to learn that M. Night Shyamalan’s The Village is one of them. Thankfully, Shyamalan is working to rectify that, telling /Film that The Village will finally be receiving a release on Blu-ray and 4K.
“A lot of people keep coming up to me on the street [about The Village],” Shyamalan said. “I’m on it. Yeah, no, that’s my next thing… That’s interesting that you asked — yeah, I’m literally on it right now to get a 4K release.” Hopefully, The Sixth Sense, which also doesn’t have a 4K release, will follow The Village.

The Bikeriders director Jeff Nichols is said to have Brad Pitt on board for his next project: a dystopian tale about a new American Great Depression.
Jeff Nichols has reportedly managed to secure the services of Brad Pitt for his next project, a bleak story about America undergoing another Great Depression. According to World Of Reel, Nichols’ project was struggling to get off the ground and was in fact a rewritten version of a pilot TV episode that he sold to HBO called Land Of Opportunity.
The tale is said to be ‘a dystopian story set in Arkansas, about a new Great Depression where oil has run out and the dollar has collapsed.’ However, HBO chose not to press ahead with the project and instead Nichols has now adapted it into a feature film which will surely get the green light if Pitt comes on board.

Cobra Kai’s Queen Cobra is portrayed to perfection by actress Peyton List. The former Disney Channel star joined the Netflix show in its second season and quickly became a fan favorite. Her character, Tory Nichols, has had a great character arc in the show.
However, the beloved role would have almost gone to someone else as List was initially unsure about the role. The actress mentioned that she did not relate to Nichols when she was offered the part and did not prepare much but was selected after she nailed her audition.

Send a crazed, supernatural, unstoppable murderer my way and maybe I’ll escape them. Throw some ghosts or demons at me and hopefully a priest or one of those Paranormal TV show guys from the Travel Channel can help. Zombies or vampires? Sure, it’ll suck. But I know how to at least try and survive that. I have a fighting chance. These things are frightening but there are three things scarier than all of them: An unstoppable world ending weather event, losing my family, or losing my mind. Take Shelter deals with the entirety of this unholy triumvirate.

Bob Newhart, the iconic comedian and actor who launched a more than six-decade run in show business in 1960 with his introduction of a deadpan, stammering everyman character whose popularity he rode well into his 80’s with a Grammy-winning comedy album and a pair of beloved Emmy-nominated sitcoms, is dead. He was 94 and passed away at his home on Thursday following a short illness. His longtime publicist Jerry Digney announced his death in a press release.
Newhart burst on the scene in 1960 with his album “The Button-Down Mind of Bob Newhart,” the first comedy album ever to top the Billboard charts. It won three Grammy Awards in ’61, including Album of the Year, Spoken-Word Comedy Album and New Artist. Newhart’s first two albums of comedy monologues (the second called “The Button-Down Mind Strikes Back!”) in fact held Billboard’s top two spots simultaneously, a rare feat.

Bob Newhart, the genteel but sharply satirical comic whose TV series “The Bob Newhart Show” and “Newhart” were huge hits throughout the 1970s and ’80s, died Thursday in Los Angeles. He was 94.
Newhart’s publicist Jerry Digney said he died after a series of short illnesses.
Newhart was also known to younger audiences as Papa Elf in the 2003 Christmas classic “Elf,” his guest spots on “The Big Bang Theory” and most recently appeared in three episodes of “Young Sheldon.”
“The Big Bang Theory” creator Chuck Lorre remembered Newhart, saying in a statement, “For years I begged Bob to appear on one of my shows. He always said no. But then he fell in love with ‘The Big Bang Theory’ and said yes – with two provisions. One: his character had to have an arc that spanned several episodes. And two: he wanted to win an Emmy. Before the age of Primetime Emmy Awards sweeps for comedy “Schitt’s Creek” and drama “The Crown” – a trend that could very well continue this year by either “The Bear” or “Shōgun” – there was “Angels in America.” The HBO miniseries adaptation of the Pulitzer Prize-winning play by Tony Kushner won 11 Emmys back in 2004 and famously took home the prizes in all seven top categories, making it the very first program to do so. This year’s 76th annual ceremony marks the 20th anniversary of the show’s historic night. To celebrate Kushner’s birthday on July 16, let’s flashback to that epic Emmys sweep.
The television adaptation followed just 10 years after the premiere of both plays on Broadway in 1993. Those original productions of “Millennium Approaches” and “Perestroika” nabbed seven Tony Awards combined, including two wins for Best Play, one for director George C. Wolfe, one for actor Ron Liebman as Roy Cohn,...

The Animal Kingdom (Thomas Cailley)
In The Animal Kingdom, an Un Certain Regard-selected science-fiction romp from France, human-animal mutations are the new norm. Director Thomas Cailley begins things in media res with a familiar disaster-movie scene: François (Romain Duris) and Émile (Paul Kircher)––father and son, respectively––are stuck in traffic, making chit-chat, when something slowly begins capturing the attention of other drivers. An ambulance across the way begins to rumble. Then a man with a large winged arm bursts out, causing some damage before scurrying down a tunnel. Only mildly ruffled, François exchanges a jaded aphorism with another driver over: “Strange times.” – Rory O. (full review)

There’s a mystery at the heart of The Inheritance, the new thriller from director Alejandro Brugués. Or at least that what the screenplay by Joe Russo & Chris Lamont seems to believe.
When the film opens, the estranged adult children of billionaire Charles Abernathy (Bob Gunton) have assembled at the isolated family estate for the first time in two years. There’s severe, business-minded twins Madeline (Rachel Nichols) and C.J. (David Walton) who manage day-to-day operations for the family business, as well as influencer Kami (Peyton List), who hocks her fashion line to followers on social media.
It’s clear that the audience’s sympathies are meant to lie with youngest son Drew (Austin Stowell) and his wife Hannah (Briana Middleton). Not only do they work in philanthropy, but as the sole person of color, Hannah is immediately coded as the outsider, even before Madeline, C.J. and Charles...

Exclusive: Paramount Pictures has greenlit the Johannes Roberts horror film Primate, with Oscar winner Troy Kotsur (Coda) set to lead the cast. Roberts will direct the Walter Hamada-produced feature, which Roberts co-wrote with Ernest Riera.
Plot details are being kept under wraps.
The project falls under Hamada’s exclusive first-look deal with Paramount which began January 1, 2023, making him “the architect of Paramount’s mainstream horror genre pod, with the mission to release several low- to mid-budget films per year across theatrical and streaming.”
The former DC Films boss steered DC to its highest-grossing movie Aquaman with $1.1 billion worldwide. He was also behind The Conjuring franchise, the highest-grossing horror series ever with more than $2 billion in global box office, 2017’s It and Matt Reeves’ The Batman, to name a few.

Clive Owen has worked with many of the great filmmakers, from Robert Altman to Spike Lee and most notably Alfonso Cuarón in “Children of Men.” But Owen called his collaboration on “Closer” with filmmaker Mike Nichols “one of the highlights of his career.”
The 2004 romantic drama co-starred Julia Roberts, Jude Law, and Natalie Portman and screened recently at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival for its 20th anniversary. Clive Owen has never been interested in being comfortable.

Beulah Annan, acquitted of shooting her lover in 1924, served as the inspiration for the character Roxie Hart in the play, film, and musical “Chicago.” The play, originally written by Maurine Dallas Watkins, is a satirical take on corruption in the administration of criminal justice and the concept of the “celebrity criminal.” Watkins, a journalist at the time, had covered Annan’s sensational murder trial for the Chicago Tribune, and her articles heavily influenced her playwriting.

Every year, a number of films come out of the woodwork to challenge for industry awards and year-end recognition, and in 2021, Michael Sarnoski’s Pig was perhaps the ultimate example of this trajectory. The Neon-released pic about Nicolas Cage’s reclusive truffle forager subverted the past decade’s uptick of revenge films, ending in an empathetic gesture and emotional appeal rather than a bang. The aching drama reminded this town that Cage is still a force to be reckoned with, making Sarnoski, in turn, a filmmaker to watch and meet with over bottled water.
One person who certainly kept tabs on the situation was A Quiet Place franchise co-mastermind John Krasinski. He eventually invited the Wisconsin native to bring his Pig sensibility to A Quiet Place: Day One — a prequel depicting how the alien invasion initially played out in New York City.

The Supreme Court ruled on Friday that the Justice Department overstepped in charging hundreds of Jan. 6 rioters with the crime of “obstruction of an official proceeding.” The decision could force prosecutors to reconsider some of its pending cases against rioters.
In a ideologically mixed 6-3 vote, the court ruled in Fischer v. United States that the Justice Department needs to raise the burden of proof for such charges, with prosecutors needing to demonstrate defendants were actually trying to disrupt the Electoral College count, not just enter the Capitol.

“A Quiet Place: Part One” had its New York City premiere on Wednesday, June 26 at AMC Lincoln Square. The third film in the franchise, this prequel sets the story that led to the John Krasinski and Emily Blunt-fronted apocalyptic thriller. Through Krasinski still serves as an executive producer, he stepped away from the camera to let a new director, Michael Sarnoski, tell his own story, along with a brand new cast that includes Lupita Nyong’o, Joseph Quinn, and Alex Wolff.
Off the heels of “Stranger Things” and recently wrapping production on Alex Garland’s “Warfare,” intense scenes are nothing new to Joseph Quinn. “Every project provides its own challenges and its own obstacles that need to be overcome,” he tells IndieWire. “This one had a very specific set of things that needed be attacked and negotiated and money, the fact that we can’t talk. So that was a very interesting thing to do,...

Exclusive: K.J. Apa (Riverdale) has entered production in the UK on Falling, a new romantic comedy-drama from Gulfstream Pictures.
The project marks Apa’s third with Gulfstream, on the heels of the motorcycle racing pic One Fast Move, which premieres on Prime Video August 8, and the rom-com The Last Summer for Netflix.
Written and directed by Colin Krisel and James Krisel (Last Moment of Clarity), Falling centers on Jack (Apa), who while quick-witted, charming, and avoidant, finally risks opening his heart when he starts dating Jillian. He never expected, though, that his best friend Johnny would fall for her, too.
Gulfstream is producing and fully financing in association with Luber Roklin Entertainment, having previously teamed with the company to produce One Fast Move. Producers include Mike Karz and Bill Bindley of Gulfstream Pictures, Lena Roklin and Matt Luber of Luber Roklin, and Piers Tempest of Tempo Productions. Apa, Tom Salentine,...

There was a bit of a directorial hot potato on the latest film in the “Quiet Place” franchise universe before it landed in the hands of Michael Sarnoski. John Krasinski, who helmed the first two films, couldn’t take the spinoff “A Quiet Place: Day One” on due to scheduling conflicts; then, “The Bikeriders” director Jeff Nichols was set to write and direct the prequel. But Nichols had creative differences with studio Paramount Pictures, parting ways with the project in early 2022.
This musical chairs surrounding a bankable IP about bloodthirsty aliens among us with supersonic hearing finally brought Sarnoski into view. Krasinski (here on as a producer) had seen Sarnoski’s 2021 debut feature, the mystical revenge drama “Pig” starring Nicolas Cage as a truffle hunter with damage, and felt the young, Yale-trained filmmaker from Milwaukee was the man for the job.

The biker has been a constant figure of Hollywood fascination — the rebel, the outsider, the last American pioneer — that you might wonder what’s left to say about him. But Jeff Nichols‘ drama The Bikeriders, starring Austin Butler, Tom Hardy, and Jodie Comer, strips away the mythology and brings us back to human basics. The Midwestern motorcycle club at the heart of the story, the Vandals, feels authentically rugged (at times you’ll swear you can almost smell these guys), a band of brothers searching for something beyond small, working-class comforts.

While making Jeff Nichols‘ new biker epic, one actor never quite made it past his training wheels.
The Bikeriders director revealed that Michael Shannon was one of the few actors who opted not to learn how to ride a motorcycle for the film, which also stars Austin Butler, Jodie Comer and Tom Hardy.
“To be honest, all of them had to go through training. Now, some guys took to it better than others. Sadly, for everyone, Michael Shannon wasn’t allowed to get near a motorcycle. We barely let him lean on a motorcycle,” he said with a laugh on the ReelBlend podcast.
“You know, when we made Midnight Special, he didn’t even have a driver’s license,” recalled Nichols of his 2016 sci-fi. “It was like, we gotta teach Mike how to drive in this chase scene.

Once upon a time, Jeff Nichols was tapped to write and direct a new Quiet Place movie. However, one year later, he exited the project with little explanation. While speaking with The Wrap, Nichols finally explained why he decided to walk away.
“[John Krasinski] was a fan of my films and was asking me if I wanted to make this prequel,” Nichols recalled. “At the time, the calculus was, well, those movies are pretty good. And I liked what they said about sacrifice and family. It felt thematically in line with some of the stuff I had made. I hatched an idea of how to how to approach it in a way that I felt comfortable with, that he seemed to like. I was like, I think this is a movie that could get made.“
After Nichols submitted his script, he came to realize that it wasn’t going to be the best fit.

Editor’s note: This review was originally published September 1, 2023 after the film’s world premiere at the Telluride Film Festival. The movie was originally to be released in December 2023 by 20th Century Studios before being derailed by the Hollywood strikes. Focus Features is now distributing and released it in theaters Friday.
Biker movies are almost a subgenre of films unto themselves, beginning with Marlon Brando’s The Wild One in the early ’50s and then through all those Aip exploitation titles of the ’60s including The Wild Angels, Hells Angels on Wheels and many more, notably Tom Laughlin’s predecessor to Billy Jack called Born Losers. It all culminated with Easy Rider with Peter Fonda, Dennis Hopper and Jack Nicholson, which became the Citizen Kane of biker cinema.

Focus Films released “The Bikeriders” nationwide on June 21, 2024 — nearly one year after the movie’s premiere at the 50th Telluride Film Festival last August. With an all-star cast led by Jodie Comer, Austin Butler, Tom Hardy, Michael Shannon and Mike Faist, the movie has earned positive reviews from critics, holding fresh at 84% on Rotten Tomatoes.
After a chance encounter, headstrong Kathy (Comer) is drawn to Benny (Butler), member of Midwestern motorcycle club the Vandals. As the club transforms into a dangerous underworld of violence, Benny must choose between Kathy and his loyalty to the club. The critics consensus reads, “Fueled by a charismatic cast and the gritty authenticity of writer-director Jeff Nichols‘ approach, ‘The Bikeriders’ offers a conventional yet impactful look at motorcycle culture.” Read our full review round-up below.

Jeff Nichols' "Alien Nation" remake is still happening, but it won't have the "Alien Nation" title anymore.
In 2016, the writer/director of films like "Mud," "Take Shelter," and "Midnight Special" was tapped to direct a remake of the 1988 film "Alien Nation" by 20th Century Fox. A couple of years later, Nichols gave us an update about the project, explaining that it was set in his home state of Arkansas, would have a $100 million budget, and he referred to it as "epic." But when Disney purchased Fox in 2019, the movie fell by the wayside and it seemed to be dead forever. In early 2021, Nichols revealed that Disney asked him to expand his screenplay into a 10-episode TV series, and at the time, he was awaiting word about whether or not that version would move forward. Then, a few months later, an announcement came out that Nichols was developing an original sci-fi...

British actress Jodie Comer, 31, is a rising star. After breaking out as a sociopathic Russian assassin in “Killing Eve” (BBC) and co-starring with Ben Affleck and Matt Damon in Ridley Scott’s “The Last Duel” (Twentieth Century/Disney), she took home a Best Actress Tony for her bravura one-woman play “Prima Facie.” So it’s no surprise that casting director Francine Maisler suggested her to writer-director Jeff Nichols.
They were looking for faces that might measure up to the Danny Lyons photography book on ’60s Chicago bikers that inspired “The Bikeriders.” They had cast Tom Hardy and Austin Butler for the motorcycle picture. The question was, could Jodie Comer nail a local Chicago accent and stand up to these powerful actors?
Apparently, she can do anything. When she first took on “Prima Facie” on the West End, she had no classical training and had appeared as a teenager in one theater production.

If you enjoyed Blue Lights season 1 on Britbox, you can now catch more episodes on the service. About the series, co-creator Adam Patterson says, “We felt like a cop show was a really interesting and a brilliant vehicle to look at any aspect of society. You can literally go anywhere! So if you want to tell a story about a place, but more importantly about really interesting characters, the cops are a brilliant Trojan horse to go into any aspect of the city. They were the original One-Percenters — not the richest of the richest, the elite within the elite, but “the one percent who don’t fit and don’t care… We’ve punched our way out of a hundred rumbles, stayed alive with our boots and our fists.” That first-hand quotes opens Hunter S. This weekend sees the release of a brand new film from an acclaimed director with an all-star cast that’s a cinematic “call-back” to a genre that’s gone Awol from the multiplexes and even the drive-ins (still enjoying a pandemic “bump) for the last few decades. And no, I’m not talking about the Western, which gallops back with Kevin Costner in the saddle next week. Well, there are a few comparisons, though these flicks began in the fifties and were an exploitation staple (a fave of the “passion pit”) into the swingin’ 70s. Going for more speed than the “oaters” were the “motorcycle gang” action epics, which have played a big role in the futuristic world of Mad Max and Furioisa. Now, this flick has those elements, but it’s more of a historical overview following some guys, and a few gals, who really thought of themselves as...

Cara Maria Sorbello and Paulie Calafiore are among several couples that formed due to their time on MTV’s The Challenge. However, some fans wonder if their multi-year relationship is still good.
After viewers saw Paulie return to the show for CBS’s The Challenge: USA 2 spin-off, Cara returned. The two-time Challenge champion returned to the show briefly as a mercenary for MTV’s Season 39, aka Battle For a New Champion.
She only appeared briefly in an elimination event against cast member Michele Fitzgerald. However, she returned for her first full season since MTV’s War of the Worlds 2, albeit a shorter spin-off, with The Challenge: All Stars 4.
That season recently wrapped up on Paramount+ with fans calling out the All Stars 4 final and claiming the winner had too many “advantages.”

Jeff Nichols’ newest film, The Bikeriders, has some true elements to it. Austin Butler, Tom Hardy, Jodie Comer, Norman Reedus, Boyd Holbrook, Toby Wallace and more have finally hit the big screen after a new distribution deal and release date postponed the movie’s release in 2023. Butler stars in the film as Benny, a man who loves motorcycles and finds himself drawn to the Chicago Vandals, a club of bikers that frequently gathers to drive around and be in community.
Tom Hardy plays Johnny, founder of the Vandals. Johnny’s righthand man is Brucie (Damon Herriman), but Benny holds his own as a figure of authority within the group. Benny brings Kathy (Jodie Comer) into the group, and she tells a lot of the oral history of the Vandals to Mike Faist’s Danny.

It’s been over seven-and-a-half years since acclaimed filmmaker Jeff Nichols last had a film in movie theaters, and with tonight’s release of The Bikeriders, the interminable wait for his sixth feature is now over. In the aftermath of his two 2016 releases, Midnight Special and Loving, Nichols knew he needed to take a step back and rejuvenate himself, creatively. However, through no fault of his own, his breather became far more prolonged than intended due to a variety of unforeseen circumstances including 2019’s Disney-Fox merger, 2020’s pandemic and 2023’s double strike.
In the case of the Disney-Fox merger that was completed in 2019, it effectively ended Nichols’ four years’ worth of development on his Alien Nation film. The Arkansas native had already been working on an original sci-fi film, but at the urging of 20th Century Fox, he agreed to retrofit his script for the sake of using a recognizable IP as a springboard.

Actor Norman Reedus, who is known for his role as Daryl Dixon in The Walking Dead will be seen in the Tom Hardy starrer The Bikeriders. The actor will reportedly be playing a character named Funny Sonny in the period film, which focuses on motorcycle gangs in the ‘60s. Based on the photobook by Danny Lyon, the film is directed by Jeff Nichols.
Reedus, who is reportedly an avid motorcycle buff, had a huge hand in crafting the look of his character in the film. The actor reportedly wanted to design the character to not resemble his The Walking Dead character and made significant changes. He was given a free rein from director Jeff Nichols to work on his own look.

Five years ago, Austin Butler’s memorable supporting role in Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood turned out to be his audition for leading man status, and he’s since become not only a leader on set but a leader on Hollywood’s new A-list.

Jodie Comer, Tom Hardy and Austin Butler star in The Bikeriders, inspired by the whiskery brutes of the Outlaws – the world’s second largest biker gang. Director Jeff Nichols explains why he really didn’t want to offend them
Anyone less like a Hells Angel would be difficult to imagine. Yet Jeff Nichols – this genial, softly spoken director, with his pink face and modest quiff of wavy, silver-streaked hair – is responsible for The Bikeriders, a movie thick with the roar of engines and the smell of grease. Inspired by photographer Danny Lyon’s 1967 book of the same name, it stars Tom Hardy as Johnny, the ageing leader of a Chicago biker gang; Austin Butler as Benny, its coolest member; and Jodie Comer as Kathy, who falls for Benny. Lyon rode with and profiled the Outlaws but Nichols has fictionalised the gang, renaming them the Vandals to avoid aggro from the real-life subjects.

Anthea Sylbert, an Oscar-nominated costume designer who worked on some of the signature films of the late 1960s and 1970s, including “Rosemary’s Baby,” “Carnal Knowledge,” “Chinatown,” “Shampoo,” “Julia” and “King Kong,” and a producer later in her career on a number of films starring Goldie Hawn, has died. She was 84.
Her death was confirmed by Robert Romanus, her stepson.
Sylbert, subject of a forthcoming documentary by Sakis Lalas titled “Anthea Sylbert: My Life in 3 Acts,” also served as an executive at United Artists and Warner Bros., at a time when there were few women in the C-suites of Hollywood. She also worked repeatedly with director Mike Nichols, both onscreen and onstage, and was Oscar-nominated for her costuming on period films “Chinatown” (1974) and “Julia” (1977).
Assessing Sylbert’s work on “Chinatown,” GlamAmor, a website dedicated to the history of fashion in film, said in 2012: “Sylbert crafted clothes for Faye Dunaway that...

Anthea Sylbert, the two-time Oscar-nominated costume designer who worked on Rosemary’s Baby, Chinatown, Carnal Knowledge, Shampoo and Julia before becoming a studio executive and producer, has died. She was 84.
Sylbert died Tuesday in Skiathos, Greece, director Sakis Lalas told The Hollywood Reporter. Lalas just finished a documentary about Sylbert titled, My Life in 3 Acts.
Sylbert partnered with two-time Oscar-winning production Richard Sylbert on eight films and with his twin brother, Paul Sylbert — her first husband and another Oscar-winning production designer — on another three.
“Paul is the more bitter, more angry of the two,” she told Peter Biskind in 1993. “Someone once put it this way: Dick is more of a diplomat. He will put the ice pick somewhere in your back, you’re not quite sure, and you sort of feel tickled; Paul, while facing you, sticks it in your gut. I always used to think that if you put them together,...
