Characters from The Wonderful Wizard of Oz pop into our world to help solve a mystery on season three of Apple TV+’s Emmy Award-winning series Ghostwriter. HBO Max has tapped Academy Award-winning writer-director Luke Matheny as head writer and executive producer of its upcoming Charlotte’s Web remake. The series, which comes from Sesame Workshop, is scheduled to begin production in April and is expected to air on HBO Max and Cartoon Network in 2024, according to Deadline. It is one of many projects in the works between Sesame Workshop and WarnerMedia Kids & Family, which are also developing Sesame Street Mecha Builders, Bea’s Block, and Sesame Street: The Nutcracker. Charlotte’s Web is based on the classic children’s book of the same name by E.B. White. Luke Matheny, who directs Apple TV+’s Ghostwriter, has signed up to serve as head writer and exec producer on HBO Max’s remake of Charlotte’s Web.

The series, which comes from Sesame Workshop, is set to start production next month and will air on HBO Max and Cartoon Network in 2024.

Charlotte’s Web tells the story of a livestock pig named Wilbur and his friendship with a barn spider named Charlotte. When Wilbur’s life is in danger, Charlotte weaves messages in her web praising Wilbur in order to drum up public support and persuade the farmer to let him live.

The adaptation is the latest remake of E.B. White’s classic; an animated feature was produced by Hanna-Barbera in 1973 and Nickelodeon and Paramount rebooted it again with Dakota Fanning and Julia Roberts teamed up for a 2006 movie.

AppleTV+ has only been airing original programming for less than nine months, but it continues to prove that it’s a hefty new player for Hollywood awards. Out of the streaming service’s four original kids’ shows, two of them just triumphed impressively at the Daytime Emmys.

Meryl Streep is set to star in and narrate an animated short film for Apple TV+ that will celebrate Earth Day, Apple announced Friday.

Streep will star with Chris O’Dowd, Jacob Tremblay and Ruth Negga in “Here We Are: Notes for Living on Planet Earth.” The film will premiere on Apple TV+ on April 17, five days ahead of Earth Day on April 22.

The animated film follows a precocious seven-year-old (voiced by Tremblay) who, over the course of Earth Day, learns about the wonders of the planet from his parents (voiced by O’Dowd and Negga) — and from a mysterious exhibit at the aptly titled Museum of Everything. The acclaimed actor is attached to narrate a forthcoming animated short film about Earth Day, which is slated to premiere April 17 on Apple TV Plus.

Titled “Here We Are: Notes for Living on Planet Earth,” the short will also feature the voices of “State of the Union” star Chris O’Dowd, young “Room” breakout Jacob Tremblay, and “Loving” star Ruth Negga.

In celebration of Earth Day, which falls on April 22, the animated film follows a precocious seven-year-old (voiced by Tremblay) who, over the course of Earth Day, learns about the wonders of the planet from his parents (voiced by O’Dowd and Negga) — and from a mysterious exhibit at the “Museum of Everything.” Streep will provide voiceover narration to accompany the images.

The 36-minute film hails from Oscar-nominated indie animation house Studio Aka and was written by Philip Hunt and Luke Matheny.

The film follows a precocious 7-year-old who, over the course of Earth Day, learns about the wonders of the planet from his parents (O’Dowd and Negga) — and from a mysterious exhibit at the aptly titled Museum of Everything. Streep narrates the film.

The film is based on author Oliver Jeffers’ 2017 bestseller of the same name. The 36-minute film is written by Philip Hunt and Luke Matheny, and directed by Hunt.

Here We Are hails from independent animation studio Studio Aka. Executive producers are Sue Goffe, Hunt and Jeffers. Alex Somers is the music composer.

The Directors Guild of America announced only a handful of nominations on the TV front on January 6, after a glitch in voting. Jill Soloway, who won in 2015 for helming “Transparent,” was left off the ballot for the series finale. So the guild is letting its members recast their votes in that category. The DGA will reveal the results of that on Friday, along with the nominees for drama series and specials. (The feature film nominations are still a go for Tuesday.)

Among Monday’s nominations, “Fosse/Verdon” led the way with three bids in the TV Movie or Limited Series race: Emmy nominees Thomas Kail and Jessica Yu are joined by Minki Spiro. Emmy champ Johan Renck (“Chernobyl”), Emmy nominee Ava DuVernay (“When They See Us”) and Vince Gilligan (“El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie”) round out the race.

The Directors Guild of America has announced nominations in several television categories, including movies and limited series, and documentary categories for the 72nd annual Directors Guild Awards, which will be handed out on Saturday, Jan. 25.

The limited series nominees include three different episodes of “Fosse/Verdon,” as well as “When They See Us,” “El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie” and “Chernobyl.”

The commercial nominees include Ridley Scott for a Hennessy ad and Spike Jonze for commercials for Squarespace and Mekanism.

A few weeks ago, we reported that Apple+ TV is bringing us a reboot of the kids series Ghostwriter, and today we have our first teaser trailer for the show. This looks like a fun series that will interest a lot of kids. I know my kids’ favorite genre is mystery, so it will be cool for them to have a series they can follow. The synopsis for the series is as follows:

In the re-imagined Ghostwriter, when a ghost haunts a neighborhood bookstore and starts releasing fictional characters into the real world, four kids must team up to solve an exciting mystery surrounding the ghost’s unfinished business. Armed with secret messages only they can see, the young heroes chase down the truth — and become friends in the process.

The series is being directed by Luke Matheny and will debut on the brand new streamer when it becomes available on November 1st.

I have a vague recollection of the kids TV series Ghostwriter from the early 90s. It had typewriters in it. And kids. And felt mysterious. I didn’t watch it very much (clearly), but it had a fun premise, and reading about it now, I think my kids will love it.

The Writers Guild of America has just announced the nominations for their annual awards for Best Screenplays (by writers who are guild signatories). That’s right, before you get nervous thinking that your favorite may have been left off the list, you must remember that the WGA is the group that is not all-inclusive and leaves out several of the top contenders each year due to them not being part of the guild or not following their very specific rules. For this reason, you won’t see Inside Out, The Hateful Eight, and Ex Machina in the Original Screenplay category or Room, Brooklyn, or Anomalisa in the Adapted screenplay category.

Taking a look at what’s left over for the nominations, we find many that were expected to make a showing, including Spotlight and Bridge of Spies for Original Screenplay, though they apparently had to sink to really low depths...

The Writers Guild of America announced some of its nominees for its 2015 awards on Thursday, including television, new media, and radio, and among the TV nominees are series both new and old, and all beloved.

In the comedy series category, freshman Netflix show "Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt" scored a nomination for best series, as well as an overall best new series nod. "The Last Man on Earth" also landed in that latter category, and was singled out for its pilot episode writing, too.

On the drama side of the equation, lauded "Breaking Bad" spinoff "Better Call Saul" also got best series and best new series nominations, in addition to a an episode writing nod. Newly-minted Emmy winner "Game of Thrones" also scored a best drama citation, as well as an episodic writing nomination.

The finalists for the first Raw Science Film Festival were screened at Caltech, which received a nod for its contribution to film during the recent Academy Awards, and the awards presented to winners in the Zanuck Theater at Fox Studios on December 8, 2014. The festival honors talented filmmakers, both student and professional, and gives them the opportunity to receive recognition in front of a worldwide audience of leaders in entertainment, science, and technology.

In addition to this, the jury is comprised of longstanding members of the Academy. Andy Hendrickson (Cto, Disney Animation Studios) accepted an award for "Big Hero 6," which recently became the winner of the Oscar for Best Animated Feature.

The 2014 Raw Science Film Festival was created by the Raw Science Foundation in association with Raw Science TV. The festival was made possible by the premiere sponsor and partner Science and Entertainment Exchange , which connects entertainment industry professionals with top scientists and engineers to create a synergy between accurate science and engaging storylines in both film and TV programming. $20,000 in cash prizes were awarded to winning filmmakers.

The festival was curated by Mitchell Block, the Executive Director of Programming for Raw Science TV, and produced by Yokeena Jamar.

The Jury included Academy Award winning & nominated filmmakers Luke Matheny (Best Short Film, “God of Love”), Randal Kleiser (“Grease” and “Honey I Blew up the Kid”), Martha Coolidge (“Real Genius” and “The Twilight Zone” TV Series), and John Singleton (“Boyz n the Hood” and “Tupac”), Liz Keim ( The Exploratorium), and Iram Parveen Bilal (“Josh”).

Presenters included Martha Coolidge and Martin Gunderson ("Real Genius"), S&Ee’s Kevin Grazier ("Gravity," "Battlestar Galactica"), Rick Loverd (Science and Entertainment Exchange), and filmmaker Iram Parveen Bilal.

Attendees included Queen Mother Dr. Delois Blakely (Un Ambassador of Goodwill to Africa, New Future Foundation, Inc.) and First Robotics Team 980 for a screening of the film "Spare Parts" starring George Lopez.

“Filmmakers inspire and balance our advancing society" said Keri Kukral, Founder/CEO of Raw Science. "We want to honor them."

Best University Prank:

The identity of legendary prankster “Calvin Techer” (aka Dwight Berg) was revealed by his surprise appearance at the festival. Berg described (video) the technical details behind one of the most legendary college pranks of all time – the changing of the Hollywood sign to read “Caltech” in 1987.

They’ve proven to be among the most popular kids series on Prime Instant Video, and all four of them were recently honored by the Parents’ Choice Foundation. Today Amazon announced that it has greenlit second seasons of its hit kids series: Creative Galaxy, Annedroids, Gortimer Gibbon’s Life on Normal Street, and recent Annie Award winner Tumble Leaf.

As he prepared for the premiere of his first series, Gortimer Gibbon’s Life on Normal Street, David Anaxagoras shared some insights into what it’s like to bring the characters in your head to life – finding the real-life people who will step into their shoes speak your words.

The First Stage: Holding Your Breath

So many miracles had to happen for us to pull off this show, because it really wasn’t something there was a template for. We knew that these characters, Gortimer and Mel and Ranger, were cut from a different cloth than a lot of the characters on kids TV right now. And it was scary because we couldn’t have a show without believable actors. But I had no idea if anybody was even out there who could pull it off. So I held my breath and we started the casting process.

The Leading Man...

This is one of the most amazing festival stories I have heard yet. I met my friend Mitch Block (known to all industryites who care about documentaries and himself, worth a separate blog) on the circuit, and he introduced me to Keri Kukral and told me the two of them were organizing a science film festival at Cal Tech and Fox Studios to be held this December 6-8. They already have a VOD platform, website (www.rawscience.tv), YouTube channel, and are now selling tickets to the festival .

I am very partial to science and particularly to women in science because my family roots in science include the recent graduation of my niece from Stanford with her Master’s Degree in evolutionary biology.

Up to now, the only media-oriented science initiative I knew of was The Sloan Foundation which encourages science in media and in tandem, encourages women in science and media. On the festival front, there exist only a handful of science film festivals including Goethe Institute’s 10 year old Science Film Festival in October which showed 78 films from 27 countries from Se Asia, No. Africa and the Middle East; St. Petersburg’s International Science Film Festival World of Knowledge which began in 2006; the seven year old Imagine Science Film Festival in October featuring 89 films (5 features) from 20 countries which counts 35 women directors, Scinema in Australia since 2001, Jackson Hole Wildlife Ff, Pariscience Ff and a very few others .

Now we can add Raw Science TV and Raw Science Film Festival to be held for the first time ever at Cal Tech’s Beckman Auditorium with an awards ceremony at Fox Studios. Of course, Cal Tech is pushing this festival to its student body, but the public is cordially invited as well. Up to $40,000 in prizes will be awarded for science and technology videos and films.

Raw Science is a new online network that produces and distributes on-demand videos, news and original programming about science and technology. The festival is a collaboration with the Science and Entertainment Exchange of the National Academy of Sciences, the Caltech to present the first annual Raw Science Film Festival.

Award winners and runners-up will be screened at Caltech’s Beckman Auditorium on December 6, 2014 and the Awards Ceremony will be held in the Zanuck Theater at 20th Century Fox Studios on December 8, 2014.

Organized within a year’s time, this festival is aimed at a broad public and celebrates filmmakers inspired by science.

“We wanted to create a film festival that significantly supported filmmakers who share the wonderful world of science and technology through exceptional film and video content,” explained Mitchell Block, Executive Director of Programming for Raw Science. “Our goal is to find, present, award and promote the youngest generation of student filmmakers all the way to the seasoned professional filmmaker, and in any style of film imaginable, be it narrative, documentary short, feature.”

We know sci-fi has a broad appeal, so let’s start there and later discover who this amazing woman, Keri Kukral, is and how she ventured into mostly unoccupied space.

The festival will screen the finalists for the eight awards offered in the categories of Less Than Ten Minutes and More Than Ten Minutes by students and by professionals to show on campus at its 1,100 seat theater. 20th Century Fox’s 400 seat Zanuck Theater will host the Awards Ceremony which will screen the winners. There will also be special theatrical feature and doc awards presented.

The call for submissions went out through the campus and through various film groups like Ifp. Mitch Block, who is the director of programming, made the first selection which will be judged. The Raw Science Film Festival Jury includes Academy Award ™ winning & nominated filmmakers Luke Matheny (Best Short Film, “God of Love”), Randal Kleiser (“Grease” and “Honey I Blew up the Kid”), Martha Coolidge (“Real Genius” and “The Twilight Zone” TV Series) and John Singleton (“Boyz n the Hood” and “Tupac”), and Iram Parveen Bilal (“Josh”).

Now, let’s return to who is Keri Kukral:

As former professional ballet dancer and engineer, Keri Kukral has a deep appreciation for the merging of creative and technical fields. She was chosen to train on full scholarship by Ruth Page at 10 years old. She performed under the direction of Larry Long and the Chicago Tribune Charities, New York City Ballet dancer Bryan Pitts with Ballet Oklahoma, and as an apprentice at Joffrey Ballet. After retiring from ballet, Keri attended Purdue University where she received a degree in biomedical/electrical engineering. She spent over a decade developing medical devices including the “The Navigator,” one of the first devices approved to monitor blood glucose real-time continuously with wireless data transfer. Keri also managed R&D for products including the “Apollo" micro catheter for use in treating brain Avms.

Keri has always loved science media.

For the decade while she was working in engineering, she would finance special trips to interview people she cared about. “I first started jumping into science media by documenting a group of radio astronomers led by Bob Dixon in Ohio with an organization called Naapo. That eventually led to many others including Stephen Hawking; Michio Kaku of string theory fame; and Nikolai Kardashev (deputy director of the Russian Space Research Institute).

She would bring with her Donald Goldsmith, Raw Science’s science editor who cowrote “Origins” with Neil deGrasse Tyson and whose college advisor was Carl Sagan, and the cinematographer Paul Goldsmith (no relation) whose Nyu Film School’s classmate was Mitch Block and who introduced the two. It was Mitch who suggested the film festival.

She was aware that the audience for science was quickly leaving TV and migrating to the internet. It began to be clear to her that one could make a legitimate network on the internet, and so she moved from her hobby to her new entrepreneurial endeavor by winning a pitch contest held by Cal Tech and Idealab. They seed-funded the medical start-up where she was currently working.

The newly created VoD platform has just licensed its first film, “Particle Fever”, a feature film that took 12 years to make about the discovery of the Higgs Boson, popularly known as “The God Particle”. Netflix and Raw Science share this film and there are more in the pipeline.

Amazon has announced that it will launch its first original live-action kids series.

Gortimer Gibbon's Life on Normal Street will be added to Prime Instant Video in the UK on Friday, December 19.

The series has been created by pre-school teacher David Anaxagoras, and stars Sloane Morgan Siegel, Ashley Boettcher, Drew Justice and Robyn Lively. Luke Matheny is on board as executive producer.

Gortimer Gibbon's Life on Normal Street focuses on the friendships between Gortimer (Siegel), Ranger (Justice) and Mel (Boettcher). They live on Normal Street, a road that is not quite as ordinary as its name suggests.

It’s called Gortimer Gibbon’s Life on Normal Street, but nothing about this story is normal, including how it came to be.

In the spring of 2012, David Anaxagoras was a preschool teacher who had given up on his dream to be a screenwriter. For 10 years, he had tackled feature-length scripts in his spare time and got nowhere, despite getting an Mfa from UCLA’s prestigious screenwriting program.

He had decided to redirect his attention when he heard that Amazon Studios was looking for TV pilot scripts and opening the door to writers without agents and managers.

There was one idea in his head for a TV series, but he never thought to pursue it, as it was a “quirky idea” that didn’t resemble anything on the networks. But he thought he should make one last-ditch effort at churning out a script. “I really thought it was the last script I would write.

Amazon announced the premiere for their new live-action kids series, Gortimer Gibbon's Life on Normal Street, and released an exclusive trailer. Pascal Borno and Scott Karol’s Conquistador Entertainment has come on board to handle sales in Cannes on Lovesick starring Friends actor Matt LeBlanc, Ali Larter and Chevy Chase.

Luke Matheny directed the story about two people paralysed by fear of love who must learn to overcome their phobias. Dean Young wrote the screenplay.

Paradigm represents Us rights to the film. Producers Josh Goldstein, Travus Pope and Michael Roiff brokered the deal with Karol.

“We are extremely excited to be selling this film at this juncture, as Matt LeBlanc’s TV series Episodes is a worldwide hit and the film showcases his comedic talents,” said Karol.

Conquistador’s sales slate includes the Jennifer Aniston drama Cake that also stars Sam Worthington and Anna Kendrick. Borno and Karol are screening footage on the Croisette.

While Hollywood likes to show teenagers in movies getting up to no good, co-writer/director Rob Meyer has a different story to tell with the coming-of-age comedy "A Birder's Guide To Everything," where the only thing these kids wield is a pair of binoculars. Co-written by Oscar winner Luke Matheny (for his Live Action Short "God Of Love"), and starring Kodi Smit-McPhee, James Le Gros, Alex Wolff, Katie Chang, and Ben Kingsley, the story follows David, a 15-year-old birding fanatic, who has snapped a photo of a supposedly extinct duck that hasn't been seen in North America since 1878.  The problem is, the picture is too blurry to be properly identified, so on the advice of Dr. Konrad, a legendary ornithologist, he assembles a ragtag team to try and get a better photo, in a tale that's more than just about birds. The Sundance Film Festival might be known as the birthplace of U.S indie filmmaking innovation, avant-gardism, a larger definition of the low budgeted film response to Hollywood in not only narrative but in the non-fiction form, but it is a festival made strong by its renewal and familiarity. That close acquaintanceness exists in Kids‘ starlets Rosario Dawson and Chloë Sevigny filmography/career path trajectory and connection to Park City (both have several indie films slated for ’14 – of which I’ve included in our predictions list) and it is that “familiarity” that is visibly noticeable in how I map out my annual predictions list.

“Gortimer Gibbon’s Life on Normal Street” is a live-action adventure show for kids 6-11 created by David Anaxagoras, a first-time writer, discovered through Amazon Studios’ open-door submission process. We asked David to share his experience on bringing his project to life with Amazon Studios.

I had quit screenwriting in spring of 2012, just around the time when Amazon Studios opened up to TV pilot submissions. I had written many feature film screenplays (and gotten nowhere) but I had never attempted a TV pilot. So I figured I would have just one more go.

And I had just one idea.

I wrote “Gortimer” for an audience of one — me. I knew it was different from the current crop of standard corporate “kidcoms” and thus no one would buy it. I wrote it anyway. I wrote it because I wanted to see something with a sense of adventure where ordinary kids ventured...

Focus World has partnered with Screen Media Films for a third time on U.S. distribution rights, this time for "A Birder's Guide to Everything," which debuted at the Tribeca Film Festival earlier this year. Focus World, the alternative distribution initiative owned and operated by Focus Features, and Screen Media will release the film on digital platforms and in theaters next spring.
