Fever Ray returns with their first new musical release in five years, an eerily watchful track titled “What They Call Us,” written and co-produced with Karin Dreijer’s The Knife counterpart Olof Dreijer.
“First I’d like to say that I’m sorry / I’ve done all the tricks that I can,” Fever Ray reconciles in the opening verse. Later on, the thrumming beat wraps up a series of questions as they wonder: “Can I just hold you for a minute / Some things just ain’t easy to repair / The...

Swedish electronic music duo The Knife rocked Coachella's first weekend. And they've still got one more performance left to go. Known for their indie synth pop and progressive electronic music, siblings Karin Dreijer Andersson and Olof Dreijer have been making statements with their music since they formed the group in 1999, infusing their ideologies on politics, societal issues and more into their lyrics. Heading to Coachella to see the cutting-edge group's final performance at this year's music fest Friday? Check out the five things to know about The Knife! 1. They made their U.S. Debut in 2006. The group wasn't exactly a big fan of public appearances, but they toured...

Following the release of their exciting and ambitious new album, “Shaking The Habitual” Swedish electronic duo The Knife have just unveiled a typically fascinating and mysterious short film about it. “Shaking The Habitual” is the duo’s first studio album since “Silent Shout” seven years ago. The album’s duration is around the 96 minute mark and is out now. Everything leading up to its release has been ambiguous, strange and exciting including the music video for opening track “A Tooth For An Eye”.
Simply titled “The Interview”, the short film explains their intentions behind the new album as well as the thought process. It wouldn’t be a Knife video if it didn’t consist of obscure footage and the video is essentially made up of a collection of that alongside discussion of the politics surrounding the album. The film was directed by Marit Östberg, who also directed the video...

The Knife have announced plans for their first live gigs in almost seven years. The Swedish duo - siblings Olof Dreijer and Karin Dreijer Andersson - will play two shows in Copenhagen in May, their first gigs since 2006. More European dates will be announced at a later date. The electronic group formed in 1999 but did not perform live until 2006. Their official website stated: "The Knife announce they will be playing two shows at Copenhagen's Vega on May 12 and 13. "The shows are the first (more)...

The Knife have announced their new album Shaking the Habitual with a video teaser. The Swedish brother and sister duo of Karin Dreijer Andersson and Olof Dreijer have not released an album since 2006's critically-acclaimed Silent Shout. The mysterious teaser was included in a press release regarding the new record, entitled 'We asked our friends and lovers to help us'. The video features abstract images and an ambient soundtrack, giving little clue (more)...

A friend and I were talking yesterday about how we couldn't wait for more material from Karin Dreijer Andersson, frontwoman for The Knife and Fever Ray, in consideration that Fever Ray's "The Wolf" soundtracks the first trailer to "Welcome to the Punch." Today, it's announced that The Knife have a new album coming out in the spring. So basically what I'm saying is we're responsible for the news. You're welcome. "Shaking the Habitual" will be out in the Spring via Mute. Swedish troupe The Knife -- which is Karin and brother Olof Dreijer -- put out an opera "Tomorrow, In a...

The Knife announces its presumably eerie, disturbing upcoming album with an eerie, disturbing teaser
Prepare for another healthy dose of eerie Swedish electronica: The Knife is back. The brother-sister duo of Karin Dreijer Andersson and Olof Dreijer hasn’t released a full album since 2006’s Silent Shout (unless you count their 2010 opera, Tomorrow, In A Year), but the pair announced today that Shaking The Habitual, their next record, will be released sometime early next year. Light Asylum’s Shannon Funchess is contributing to the effort. To celebrate their return, the sibs have released a 43-second album teaser creepily titled, “We asked our friends and lovers to help us.” It features the two ...

Today’s track of the day is Heartbeats by the Swedish electronic music duo The Knife. Some of you may remember hearing the track in Xavier Dolan’s Heartbeats (Les Amours Imaginaire) which I still think is the best soundtrack of 2010. Chances are most readers know of both the song and artists, but there is always someone out there who missed out.
The group which consists of siblings Karin Dreijer Andersson and Olof Dreijer, first received international attention after this song was released. Some of you may also know Andersson for her solo album under the name Fever Ray in 2009, while her brother released several EPs as Oni Ayhun in late 2009 and early 2010.

We may not have been overly enamored with the "Twilight"-meets-a-Meatloaf-video charms of the trailer for Catherine Hardwicke's "Red Riding Hood," a teen-friendly retelling of the classic myth, when it debuted yesterday, but there was one aspect of the preview that this writer liked--the sinister electro-folk backing. As one commenter astutely pointed out, the clip sounded awfully like Swedish vocalist Karin Dreijer Andersson, of electro band "The Knife," but it wasn't a song that we were familiar with. As it turns out, Catherine Hardwicke talked to Hero Complex about the film, and revealed that not only is the song Andersson's, but…...

Yesterday, I wrote an article about the maddeningly engrossing (and really pretty gross) "Iamamiwhoami" viral campaign, a series of YouTube clips that feature plenty of fetal imagery, trees excreting milky fluids, miscellaneous body parts and one particularly grisly live birth.
The whole point of the article was that, despite much speculation, Christina Aguilera has nothing to do with the campaign (her publicist told me so), but judging from the comments I got from plenty of readers (as well as the theories posted on the "Iamamiwhoami" YouTube page) no one seemed to believe me. But I'm believing what her people told me: Christina is "100 percent not" behind this.
So that raises the obvious question: Who is? In a further attempt to get to the bottom of this, I decided to make a list of the prime suspects and why each of them may (or may not) be posting the videos. What can I say?...

The Knife have confirmed that they will release a studio album of music written for the opera Tomorrow, In A Year on March 1. The Swedish duo, made up of Karin Dreijer Andersson and Olof Dreijer, teamed up with artists Mt. Sims and Planningtorock to work on the project. The pair were commissioned by Danish performance group Hotel Pro Forma to write the music for their opera, which is based on Charles Darwin and his book On the Origin of the Species. "At first it was very difficult as we really didn’t know anything about opera. We'd never been to one. I didn't even know what the word libretto meant," Olof Dreijer said. "But after some studying, and just getting used to opera's essence of pretentious and dramatic gestures, (more)...

Remember when you were a kid and MTV would show a new video with that cool “World Premiere” intro? Well, this is sorta like the Internet version. This cover of Nick Cave and Anita Lane’s 1986 song about hotel sex with strangers (at least that’s what I think it’s about) will appear on a three-disc deluxe edition of Fever Ray’s eponymous debut, out November 24 on Mute. If three discs sounds a bit much for a band just starting out, consider that Fever Ray’s Karin Dreijer Andersson is still probably best known as one half of Sweden’s The Knife, which put out Pitchfork’s favorite album of 2006. She’s known for her ghoulish stage antics—goblin masks, face paint, fake blood—as much as she is for her erotic and macabre music. So it should come as no surprise that Fever Ray’s music videos are spooky as hell,...

I think I saw Fever Ray last night. I definitely heard Karin Dreijer's music, saw her laser show and watched shadows of what I can only assume were the band performing song's off Fever Ray's self-titled album—a side-project from one-half of The Knife that's starting to garner more attention than the original band. But Dreijer herself remained hidden—first in a coat that gave her a silhouette that looked like one of Maurice Sendak's Wild Things and then simply in the darkness.

If the psychedelic filmmaker Kenneth Anger somehow commandeered the controls at Walt Disney World’s Haunted Mansion, the result might look like last night’s Fever Ray show at Webster Hall in New York City. Fever Ray is the solo project of Swedish singer Karin Dreijer Andersson, who also happens to be one half of The Knife. (The other half is her brother, Olof.) These are artists who dwell in shadows, both figuratively and literally. Lyrically, Andersson makes Thom Yorke sound as literal as Neil Diamond (“You’ve got cucumbers on your eyes/Too much time spent on nothing/Waiting for a moment to arise”), and in performance she has perfected the art of keeping people guessing. She took the stage wearing an occult-themed costume built around a shrunken head. “She looks like a homeless high school mascot in a horror movie,” my wife said, and it was true. The...

Fever Ray has announced the dates of their North American tour this fall. The side project of Karin Dreijer Andersson, lead vocalist of electronic music duo The Knife, kicks off the tour in New York on September 28th.
Andersson will be supported by a four-piece band on the tour. Other cities on the bill are Montreal, Toronto, Chicago and San Francisco.
According to NME, the band will conclude their jaunt in Los Angeles on October 7. Andersson was previously the vocalist and guitarist of the alternative rock band Honey Is Cool.
The 34-year-old, mother of two, released her self-titled debut album this year. Pitchfork has given an 8.1 review ranking and best new music distinction, Nylon calls the album "dark, surreal and majestic" and Filter calls it "sublime and magically creepy" with an 87 percent review ranking.

It’s clear now which end of The Knife features the blood-spattered blade. Karin Dreijer Andersson took a break from her better-known project in order to get some air, but her eponymous debut as Fever Ray is countless times more claustrophobic and creepy than Silent Shout. It also holds its own against that incredibly strong record, mining similar depth of field (an epic, sludge-caked trek as always) but eschewing easier beats for black soundscapes that push back against Andersson’s poisoned breath. On songs like “When I Grow Up,” her croon sounds desperate and starved, stretched out over echoing guitar ...

Norwegian dance act Röyksopp have heaped praise on their fellow Scandinavian artists. The duo teamed up with a number of singers, including Robyn and The Knife's Karin Dreijer-Andersson, for forthcoming album Junior, and have claimed that their "inclusive" relationship helped increase their creativity. "There are a lot of good things coming out of Scandinavia at the moment from Sweden, Norway and Denmark," band member Svein Berge told Gigwise. "We (more)...
