Apple TV+ announced that “Schmigadoon!” has been renewed for a second season. Additionally, Tituss Burgess and Patrick Page have joined the cast.
The series stars Cecily Strong and Keegan-Michael Key as a couple named Melissa Gimble and Josh Skinner, two doctors from New york who go on a backpacking trip when their relationship hits a rough patch and find themselves lost in the town of Schmigadoon — where life is a 1940s-50s musical with songs and characters inspired by “Oklahoma!” and “The Music Man,” among others. Jessica Chastain and Ariana DeBose just took home Oscars for their big-screen turns in “The Eyes of Tammy Faye” and “West Side Story,” respectively, but they might want to keep their trophy cases open to add some hardware for their small-screen work. Both women could check off the E in their Egot in six months as Chastain, who won the Best Actress Oscar, is in Emmy contention for her HBO limited series “Scenes from a Marriage” and Best Supporting Actress champ DeBose could be shortlisted for Apple TV+’s “Schmigadoon!”
A remake of Ingmar Bergman‘s “Scenes from a Marriage,” HBO’s five-part series didn’t make the biggest splash when it aired in the fall (especially with the third season of “Succession” succeeding its time slot), but it earned great reviews, as did Chastain and Oscar Isaac for their performances as an unhappy couple in a crumbling marriage. After a decade of working hard on Broadway, Ariana DeBose is enjoying her time in the limelight. Tonight, she hosts “Saturday Night Live,” a major accomplishment for a newly famous actor.
For playing Anita in Steven Spielberg’s 2021 remake of “West Side Story,” the 30-year-old took home the Golden Globe for supporting actress on Sunday. She is also nominated for a Critics’ Choice and Screen Actors Guild Award, and looks to have a good shot at this year’s Oscars.
“It’s wild! Because I have been working [for a long time]. This experience makes me feel as if I’ve been hiding away on Broadway,” DeBose told Variety after receiving her SAG nomination on Wednesday. “But I haven’t been hiding! I was just working, doing my thing.”
“Doing her thing” has included her 2011 Broadway debut as Nautica in “Bring it On: The Musical” and performing as the Bullet in the original ensemble of “Hamilton,...

Apple TV+’s “Schmigadoon!” broke onto the scene in July and instantly endeared itself to audiences. The musical-comedy stars Cecily Strong and Keegan-Michael Key as a New York couple going through relationship pains, so they trek through the woods and wind up in the magical town of Schmigadoon where everyone sings and dances. The six-episode series, created by Cinco Paul and Ken Daurio, takes its inspiration from the classic Broadway musical “Brigadoon.” In all, 13 cast members are eligible for the ensemble prize at the 2022 Screen Actors Guild Awards (see below).

Key plays Josh Skinner, a successful surgeon, while Strong takes on the role of Melissa Gimble, a caring Obgyn. While Key is a former SAG Award nominee for being a part of the “Key and Peele” ensemble, this would mark Strong’s first-ever bid with the actors guild.

Dr. Josh Skinner has a song in his heart — and he’s finally ready to sing it from the rooftops (or in this case, Schmigadoon!‘s town square).
In the sixth and final episode of the Apple TV+ comedy’s freshman run, Keegan-Michael Key‘s character realizes that he can’t cross that bridge back into reality with schoolmarm Emma Tate because he’s still very much in love with Melissa. And after spending the previous five episodes resisting every opportunity to burst into song, the musically averse Josh lets down his guard and tells Melissa exactly how he feels — in song.

Warning: Spoilers ahead for the finale of “Schmigadoon!”
The finale of “Schmigadoon!” on Apple TV+ brought a whole lot of big revelations with it, ranging from characters’ secret political beliefs to their pyrotechnic tendencies. But arguably the biggest reveal came in the form of a secret child — well, two actually. Because as it turns out, Emma Tate (Ariana DeBose) wasn’t the only one hiding the fact that she was a mother; Kristin Chenoweth’s Mildred Layton was too.
It was a twist Chenoweth was particularly pleased about, because for her, it rounded out the character and made Mildred more than just an uptight, old-fashioned villain.
“It was so good to have that in the character because when I got first got the part, I told Barry [Sonnenfeld, the series director], ‘I need the Mildred Pierce hairdo, I need the Joker maniacal lips, I need a mole,'” Chenoweth told TheWrap. “I didn’t win the mole.

What is there to say about Schmigadoon! Season 1 Episode 6 that hasn't been lauded and applauded throughout this far too short one-month engagement?
The finale gives us everything the final act of a Golden Age musical would encompass, Plus a totally evolved and empowering ensemble number that conveys through its medium the message of change and growth.
To draw on musical theater touchstones, it was like the Dawning of the Age of Aquarius paid the Rent because they could Hear the People Sing Somewhere Over the Rainbow.
I commented earlier in the series that there seemed to be a hint that Melissa and Josh would affect the town as much as the town would change them.
In the process of mending their relationship, many Schmigadoonians were able to find the courage to step out of the situation they were written into and express their personal desires and ambitions.
And there are such beautiful parallels.

I personally believe every show Ever would benefit from adding Jane Krakowski, and Schmigadoon! Season 1 Episode 5 really proves my point.
I've loved it all from the moment Melissa and Josh stepped foot over the bridge, and my mind is constantly blown by the talent they gathered into this cast.
But when Doc Lopez spun Melissa directly into the bosom of the sparkling Countess Gabriele Von Blerkom, who seemed to appear out of thin air, I keeled over, laughing.
And when her number turned out to be based on Kiss Me, Kate's "Always True To You In My Fashion," one of my favorite all-time musical theatre songs, I pretty much jumped up and cried, "Hooray!"
I love The Countess so much because she actually contests her character's destiny.
In contrast to Danny Bailey, who seems determined to play out his Carousel plotline to its tragic end, The Countess is D-o-n-e with...

Schmigadoon! manages to sell its audience on a pair of dalliances as fast as Betsy was able to sell Melissa on The Inn’s world-famous corn pudding.
In Episode 4, Jaime Camil (Jane the Virgin) and Ariana DeBose (Hamilton) are formally introduced as Doc Lopez and schoolmarm Emma Tate, new love interests for Cecily Strong and Keegan-Michael Key’s bewildered outsiders. There's a lovely symmetry to the structure of Schmigadoon! Season 1 Episode 4, pleasing the sensibilities and enhances the sweet romance blossoming in the central plot development.
It's most obvious in the opening and finale scenes where couples are declaring their love for each other for the first time, kissing, and getting snowed on.
What's positively magical about it all is that between those elegantly drawn moments of burgeoning affection, they managed to fit in a song about the biology of baby-making, a death by Egyptian Hucklebuck (although not on screen), and a whole dance number done on top of desks.
One of the trademarks of Golden Age MGM Musicals was the "movie magic" technology, whether it was camera angle tricks, double-exposure effects, or split-screen "travel."
We get some delightful homages to those here with the dual dance number and the classroom ensemble tap dance.

When Cecily Strong’s Melissa and Keegan-Michael Key’s Josh first wander into Schmigadoon!, the harmonious haven at the center of Apple TV+’s musical satire, neither they nor the audience knows exactly what to expect. That’s why it was vital that the opening number hit all the right notes.

As a genre, musicals are up there with the Western: You either love them or hate them. They’re also genres that are easy to mock and/or subvert. Thus is the case with the new Apple TV+ series, “Schmigadoon,” an ambitious show that hopes to both modernize the musical while humorously poking fun at some of the more obvious narrative flaws of the genre. With hummable songs and a stellar cast of Broadway and comedy veterans, it’s almost enough to make you forget how surface-level the conceit comes across.
Melissa and Josh have been together for several years but are in a rut. Melissa sees their relationship in extremes of utter perfection or complete failure, while Josh puts in the bare minimum of effort and remains closed off.
