Is it possible we've been looking back at the Netflix "Daredevil" series through rose-tinted glasses? Controversial, I know. I'll acquit myself of these charges, natch, since I was never all that high on it in the first place; I originally tapped out on the series after season 1 and only went back to do a proper marathon in the lead up to "Born Again." What constantly frustrated me, however, was how the various writers and showrunners approached the dichotomy at the heart of Charlie Cox's Matt Murdock. Yes, the various bare-knuckle action sequences and ruthless hallway fights stole much of the spotlight, and deservedly so. But whenever I think back to the highest highs of the Netflix show, what comes to mind first isn't his violent beatdowns...

As star Charlie Cox has stressed, "Daredevil: Born Again" is named that because it's a revival of the previous "Daredevil" TV show, not because it's adapting Frank Miller and David Mazzucchelli's "Born Again" story. Daredevil has been a fixture of the Marvel Cinematic Universe for over a decade. We weren't initially sure if his series was canon to the franchise, with loose nods and references to the MCU that would have been in home in any Daredevil series. But when the Netflix show came to an end and the characters resurfaced in MCU projects, the confirmation was made by Marvel Studios. Disney does not regularly release viewership information about its streaming shows, so exact comparisons are difficult. But for some context, it was previously reported that the Sterling K. Brown drama “Paradise” drew 7 million views across its first nine days of streaming on Hulu and Disney+ earlier this year. The first episode of fellow Marvel show “Agatha All Along” hit 9.3 million views in its first week of availability in September 2024.

One year later, Murdock founds a new law firm, Murdock & McDuffie, with his new partner Kirsten McDuffie (Nikki M. James). Daredevil: Born Again took one of the most bold decisions that Marvel has ever made. Daredevil ended with the establishment of Nelson Murdock & Page. After an almost seven-year wait, the Man Without Fear finally returned as Daredevil: Born Again premiered on March 4 on Disney+. The opening scene showed Matt Murdock (Charlie Cox) with his longtime friend Foggy Nelson (Elden Henson) and partner Karen Page (Deborah Ann Woll) hanging out at a bar and having a good time.

A client of Foggy’s called, needing help with someone stalking him. Matt changed into his costumed identity of Daredevil to try and find the guy, only to discover too late it was a ruse by twisted former FBI agent Benjamin Poindexter (Wilson Bethel), who was now the costumed killer Bullseye.

Bullseye shot Foggy point blank and was about to kill Karen when Matt arrived.

Producers of Hamilton, including the musical’s creator Lin-Manuel Miranda, have canceled a planned 2026 engagement at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., decrying the “recent purge by the Trump Administration” of the venue’s professional staff and center-produced events.

Review: Just under ten years ago, Marvel brought its first street-level hero to Netflix with Daredevil. While the series would be followed by Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, and a crossover event in Defenders, the Charlie Cox-led Daredevil was the best series of the bunch. After three seasons, Daredevil ended its Netflix run, and the cast said goodbye to the denizens of Hell’s Kitchen. But, when Marvel Studios reacquired the full rights to the characters, we saw Cox show up in Spider-Man: No Way Home and She-Hulk: Attorney At Law while Vincent D’Onofrio returned as Wilson Fisk in the Disney+ series Hawkeye and Echo.

Netflix’s Daredevil was a very good series that, at times, was great. It was also flawed, but for many fans, the show - which lasted three seasons and spilt over into The Defenders - remains an undisputed classic. The cast and action alone largely made up for any storytelling shortcomings, so following it was never going to be an easy task for Marvel Studios’ Daredevil: Born Again. A creative overhaul took place midway through production when executives realised their approach to the revival wasn't working and the result is a show that vastly improves on its predecessor. Now, it stands out as not just the best MCU series but the best comic book TV show ever made.

This is exactly what Disney should have been doing with its streaming service from the beginning. The choice to flood Disney+ with series like Agatha All Along and Secret Invasion only worked to damage the MCU’s already struggling reputation. Daredevil is back and it’s good to have him. The “Street-Level” shows Marvel produced for Netflix in the 2010s gave us some of the best superhero TV of all time, particularly “Jessica Jones” and The Man Without Fear’s brutal first run.

This Disney+ sequel, appropriately titled “Daredevil: Born Again,” seems a smidge less dark and violent. That could just be because what is essentially the series’ fourth season is nine episodes long instead of earlier incarnations’ 13, which leaves less time for Charlie Cox’s blind Defender with the heightened other senses to break limbs and suffer the lacerations his Catholic guilt drives him to seek out.

But fear not. There are extended beatdowns and gory murders in each new chapter. The real punishment this time around, however, is meted out to the rule of law and political decency in New York City. With endless parallels to what’s going on in Washington D.

No one in the industry wants to go back to that uncertain time, but in the case of the upcoming Disney+ series, it ended up being a blessing in disguise because it allowed the creatives to see that the new Daredevil series was going completely in the wrong direction. As we're sure most of you are aware, the upcoming Disney+ Daredevil: Born Again series was originally envisioned as more of a soft reboot of the now defunct Daredevil series than a direct continuation. Plans changed, and a significant creative overhaul brought the show more in line with its Netflix predecessor.

The decision was made to alter the direction of the show during the Hollywood strikes, when the creative team had a chance to look over what had been shot up to that point. Though "some things" worked, everyone agreed that "something was off."

"It led to a feeling of, maybe we don't have to define it. Maybe we can play it loose," Marvel's Brad Winderbaum recalls.

"It really wasn't clear until we watched the series after the strike that we had to choose," Star Charlie Cox (Matt Murdock) adds: "Not that it didn't work, but it was a little bit confusing.
