2024 had a lot of TV shows ending, which included plenty of sci-fi and fantasy shows. And some of those endings left fans hungry for more!

It's no surprise that TV networks and streamers have a bad habit of canceling some shows too early. That's more true for sci-fi and fantasy shows that have a harder time capturing a large audience to justify their large budgets. It's jarring that some shows barely seemed to get out of the gate before being cut short. From famous shows to more overlooked ones, here's a look at the sci-fi/fantasy show cancellations that really angered folks in 2024!

Some may argue that this Star Wars show about a pair of Force-sensitive sisters was bad.

After terrifying TV audiences for three seasons, Chucky was canceled by NBCUniversal-owned networks, Syfy and USA Network. The beloved series was a follow-up of the seven films that formed the iconic Child’s Play franchise.

It was a direct sequel to 2017’s Cult of Chucky. While some fans believed the show was declining in quality with each season, the ratings showed consistency.

Don Mancini perfectly balanced scary and campy in the series that explored another evil plot involving the Good Guy Doll, Chucky, which possesses the soul of serial killer Charles Lee Ray. Brad Dourif, who voiced Chucky in the movies, returned to the series alongside Zackary Arthur, Björgvin Arnarson, Alyvia Alyn Lind, Teo Briones, and Devon Sawa.

Review: There are no better horror franchise documentaries than Crystal Lake Memories and Never Sleep Again. The in-depth looks at the Nightmare on Elm Street and Friday the 13th franchises are the definitive looks at their respective franchises. They provide unique interviews and insight into the horror productions we thought we knew everything about. Yet they manage to find new information! So I, like many fans, was ecstatic to see them put Chucky in their crosshairs. Given the series’ very unique history and 36-year run, there is so much information to parse from.

There’s little doubt that Charles Lee Ray, aka Chucky, has left an indelible mark on horror culture. One of the few 1980s slashers to still dot the horror landscape in 2024, the killer doll has a multi-media empire worth exploring. My confession: I was a late bloomer to loving horror movies. Well, ok, I've been drawn to art and stories that scare me since I can remember, but it was only in high school that my curiosity started to overpower my fear (that and I discovered ways to access movies without my parents). Even so, it took me until October 2017, my first spooky season in college, to finally watch the classic "A Nightmare on Elm Street."

Why did I take so long? I'd heard of the movie before and I knew who Freddy Krueger (Robert Englund) was. I'd seen "The Simpsons" parody in "Treehouse of Horror VI" ("Nightmare on Evergreen Terrace") and understood what it was referencing. I even knew the lyrics of the ghostly killer's theme song. Shouldn't "Nightmare" have been a priority for me?

Yet, as a budding cinephile in the early 2000s, I spent as much time...

While it may not be Friday, there is still plenty to celebrate this Tuesday the 13th, as we prepare to head back to Camp Crystal Lake with Scream Factory’s impressive Friday the 13th Collection, which brings together all the films from the original franchise, as well as the remake and Freddy vs. Jason as well. Scream Factory also put together a Blu-ray release of one of the most seminal films from my childhood this week—Terror in the Aisles—and they even are giving Motel Hell the Steelbook treatment on Tuesday as well.

Last Friday, some big news broke that thrilled horror fans everywhere – Courteney Cox is officially returning as Gale Weathers in Scream 5. The Friends star has been a leading player in all previous four films in the franchise, and she’ll be back once again as the no-nonsense reporter alongside ex-husband David Arquette as her on-screen husband Sheriff Dewey Riley in the much-anticipated rebootquel.

Alyssa Milano is pushing back against irritated conservatives complaining about the first-ever same-sex kiss at the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade on Thursday.

The actress and activist retweeted a post from For America — a group that describes itself as the “new champion of conservatism” on its website — saying millions of kids “had their innocence broken” after seeing two young actresses kiss during one of the parade’s musical numbers. Milano didn’t see it that way.

“My small children’s innocence was broken by active shooting drills in school,” Milano said atop her retweet. “Seeing two girls kissing just solidifies what they already innately know. Love is love.”

As someone who loves teen-centric slashers, Thommy Hutson’s latest book, Jinxed, was an incredibly fun read and I really enjoyed how he managed to tip his hat to so many great films and characters, but still delivered up an engaging and original story that kept me guessing throughout. Hey everyone. Having written and rewritten this introduction four times, I’ve resigned myself to a simple fact: I can’t rewrite what has been. I can’t change what is done. But the future isn’t set in stone, and my present is better than it’s been in a very long time. I guess which is to say that I’m forever an optimist; I can’t help it and frankly, I don’t care to change. It’s just the way I’m built. So, it was a busy year, and many of the reasons why you’ll see described below with my list of favorite things from 2017. As you’ll see, horror—and horror people—never let me down.

Favorite TV Shows

Okay this will be very short, so let’s get it out of the way: I didn’t see any horror TV this year at all.

Out this week on Blu-ray is the psychological thriller The Id, directed by Thommy Hutson and starring Amanda Wyss. Hutson, who many genre fans may know from all the stellar documentaries he’s produced over the years, including Never Sleep Again, Scream: The Inside Story, More Brains! A Return to the Living Dead, and Crystal Lake Memories, is making his mark in the world of narrative features with The Id, which follows a woman endlessly tormented by both the past and her abusive father, whom she is tasked with caring for in his twilight years.

Can you imagine Freddy Krueger without his famed fedora? Now you don't have to. Here's the "Newsies" version Wes Craven and company almost went with, before settling on the iconic look we know today (courtesy Bloody-Disgusting): Doesn't quite have the same feel, does it? It's fascinating to wonder whether the paperboy cap and sleeveless (!) red-and-green sweater would have doomed the franchise before it even began. We'll never know, but it's fun to speculate as a sort of "Sliding Doors"-esque scenario. It has been a while since Freddy Krueger graced the big screen, but you can't keep a good man (or, for that matter, a deranged maniac) down. This month sees the publication of author Thommy Hutson's excellent new book Never Sleep Again: The Elm Street Legacy while a version of Freddy's distinctive glove makes an appearance in the new trailer for the comedy-drama Buzzard. Written and directed by Joel Potrykus, the film concerns a small-time con artist in possession of what the official synopsis describes as "a pocket full of bogus checks, a dangerously altered Nintendo Power Glove, and a bad temper.

As far as creature features go, Animal is about as generically crafted as they come, but that might be serviceable enough for some of you (no judgement!). A group of hikers venture into a heavily wooded area and get caught stumbling around after sundown, some type of murderous creature pursues on foot, and a playful excursion turns into a fight for survival. People die, blood is spilled, and a monster roams free – but Chiller’s animalistic horror movie doesn’t do a darn thing to differentiate itself. Instead of finding myself cringing in fear at the very sight of these monsters, my first thought was “Oh look, they copied the Feast monsters!” I’ll admit, Animal is quick and relatively painless, but with a presence so duplicative, is all the running, screaming, and dying actually worthwhile?

We kicked off this past weekend with our first look at the poster art for the Drew Barrymore-produced Animal, and so it seems only right that we kick off the work week with a trailer for the flick, which gives us our first glimpse at the predatory action.

Robert Englund calls it “a junior high school shop project from hell.” The man who played iconic horror villain Freddy Krueger in eight feature films isn’t talking about a poorly constructed student project like the block of wood I received an F+ for in 8th grade. Enlgund instead describes a weapon composed of razor-sharp steel and leather: Freddy Krueger’s bladed glove from A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984) and its seven sequels.

Crudely made in a boiler room that was Freddy’s own private hell on earth for children, the bladed glove is an iconic piece of horror cinema, and it’s just one of many topics from the Elm Street movies featured in directors Daniel Farrands and Andrew Kasch’s meticulous 2010 documentary film, Never Sleep Again: The Elm Street Legacy, which was released recently as a two-disc Collector’s Edition Blu-ray.

As a child of the 1980s, I was practically raised on Nightmare on Elm Street movies. I saw my first one, Dream Master, at age eight, when my friend’s parents weren’t home. I was hooked. Nancy Thompson was the epitome of the strong, smart teenager, a character which was not portrayed often enough in films (and still isn’t), so it was no surprise that I looked up to Nancy and the actress who portrayed her, Heather Langenkamp. A new teaser from the upcoming Drew Barrymore produced horror feature 'Animal' has appeared in the pages of Entertainment Weekly. The image features musical star Eve being grabbed by the mysterious predator. 'Animal' is directed by Brett Simmons who will be helming from a script penned by Thommy Hutson and Catherine Trillo. Brett Simmons' horror feature Animal has moved into post-production. This beastly film will be shown through a limited theatrical screening and on the Chiller channel. The film stars Joey Lauren Adams (Chasing Amy), Amaury Nolasco ("Prison Break"), Parker Young, Elizabeth Gillies and Paul Iacono. Simmons, from Husk horror fame, directed the film from Thommy Hutson and Catherine Trillo's (Prank) script. Now, a couple of photos from production have been released. The story for Animal involves several friends hiking in some unfamiliar backwoods. A blood-thirsty predator is on their heels and their dire predicament brings out some dark secrets from the group. Shooting on Animal completed in August of 2013, so the film is likely set for release, soon. For more than thirty years, Friday The 13th has proven to be as unstoppable at the box office as its hockey-masked villain Jason Voorhees, having spawned twelve feature films!

I’m not a huge fan of the Friday The 13th series. I was in college when the first one came out and was just a bit too old to get too excited about the many sequels. But I saw them all! Mostly at drive-ins. I saw part 3 in 3-D at the now-defunct Westport Cinema in ’84 (I also saw Parasite in 3D there the same year) and always considered that my favorite of the series, probably just because of the gimmick. I really liked Jason X (the one in space) and think more highly of Freddy Vs Jason now than I did when I first saw it 10 years ago. The reboot was forgettable and I’m not surprised that it seems...

Crystal Lake Memories is an extensive Friday the 13th documentary that runs nearly 420 minutes. Originally scheduled for release in August, the Blu-ray/DVD release has moved to more fitting date in September:

“1428 Films, Panic Productions and Hutson Ranch Media have announced that the release date for Crystal Lake Memories: The Complete History of Friday the 13th has been moved to Friday, September 13th, 2013. The documentary was originally slated for release on August 27th.

“Because of the scope of the show and in order to craft the best, most interesting and entertaining look at the films and TV series, it became necessary to give the post-production process a bit more time,” says producer Thommy Hutson. “Ultimately, though, we are thrilled with the show and can’t wait for fans to get back to camp – and we think Mrs. Voorhees and Jason would be happy with the new date!”
