Based on the book of the same name by Ernest Cline, "Ready Player One" takes viewers to 2045, where Wade Watts (Tye Sheridan) dives into a video game world of the Oasis to track down the Easter egg hidden by late creator James Halliday (Mark Rylance). Finding the egg will make the player rich and give them ownership of the virtual world that millions occupy for hours each day.
Wade has spent years searching for a path to the item, and he keeps coming up short until he meets a player named Art3mis (Olivia Cooke), who works with him to find the clues and the three challenges that lead to highly coveted keys. Their success is threatened by Nolan Sorrento (Ben Mendelsohn), an evil businessman and former employee of Halliday, who uses his team of Sixers to track down the Easter egg for his betterment.

"Cool story, man." The 2010 cult-classic film Scott Pilgrim vs. the World is chock-full of one-liners and beloved, riotous characters, including the gloriously deadpan Kim. The drummer and ex-girlfriend to Scott is played to perfection by Alison Pill, helping to bring to life the delicious ensemble first laid out in Bryan Lee O'Malley's iconic graphic-novel series. The creator was then heavily involved in Edgar Wright's acclaimed film adaptation — and next came the highly anticipated anime series on Netflix. Scott Pilgrim Takes Off has been perceived to be a one-and-done sort of project, but, of course, we're itching for more. MovieWeb was fortunate to catch up with Pill, who had reunited with her film co-stars for the animated show, to gather any additional insight into the thrilling franchise's future. She told us:

The animated series Scott Pilgrim Takes Off, based on Bryan Lee O'Malley's graphic novels, debuted on Netflix in November 2023 to widespread acclaim and initial discussions about a second season. However, it was revealed earlier this week that the show will not be returning and has been canceled. Someone who disagrees with that label is creator OMalley, who reiterated his view on the reported demise of the single-season series.
According to OMalley, the idea that Scott Pilgrim Takes Off was ever going to have a second season was ludicrous, as it was only ever
ntended to be a one-and-done series. Sharing a post on Instagram (via BleedingCool), OMalley wrote:

Scott Pilgrim vs. the World wasn’t the success it should have been, but the live-action adaptation of Bryan Lee O’Malley’s graphic novel series nonetheless developed a passionate cult following. Thirteen years later, the entire cast returned for Scott Pilgrim Takes Off, a new animated series that debuted on Netflix last year. While the chances of a second season were already slim, the streaming service has made it official: Scott Pilgrim Takes Off has been cancelled.
O’Malley confirmed the news on X/Twitter. “It’s been one year since Scott Pilgrim Takes Off came out. It was an honor to work with all of the cast & staff around the world. It was like conducting a symphony orchestra every day. From the moment [co-writer BenDavid Grabinski] sparked the idea, the project felt like a one of a kind miracle,” O’Malley wrote. “Anyway, we were recently informed that the show will Not return.

Netflix has officially axed yet another popular series. Scott Pilgrim Takes Off is the latest victim of the streamer's vendetta against good shows. Based on the graphic novels by Bryan Lee O'Malley, Scott Pilgrim Takes Off brought Edgar Wright back to the franchise as an executive producer, along with almost the entire voice cast from Wright's original movie, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Bryan Lee O'Malley, who served as co-developer and an executive producer on the show, declared that Netflix have axed the series. "We were recently informed that the show will Not return," O'Malley wrote. Thankfully, it's not all bad news. Unlike Netflix's other canceled shows, like Glow, Scott Pilgrim Takes Off closed out its story within the first season. His tweet continued:

In a post on O'Malley's X account, the beloved comic creator thanked everyone involved in production of the anime series and clarified that he and the rest of the crew on the Scott Pilgrim anime had always planned the series for one season, so the non-renewal isn't a shock.

Chris Evans loved filming Scott Pilgrim vs. the World and didn't want to leave the set. The film's unique blend of elements like video games, alt music, and comedy made it a standout. Due to the SAG-AFTRA strike, Mary Elizabeth Winstead had to let two exciting projects in Ahsoka and Scott Pilgrim Takes Off speak for themselves, but now she’s finally looking back on her rather significant 2023.
In early 2022, Winstead officially joined the Star Wars galaxy in order to bring the beloved animated character of General Hera Syndulla to live-action for the first time. When the offer originally came in from Ahsoka creator Dave Filoni, it allowed Winstead the opportunity to reunite with Rosario Dawson 16 years after they last shared the screen in Quentin Tarantino’s Death Proof. It also presented her the chance to join the storied franchise that she already had a great deal of familiarity with, as her life partner, Ewan McGregor, has been playing Obi-Wan Kenobi since the late ‘90s and had just wrapped his own eponymously titled Star Wars Disney+ series.

The Scott Pilgrim Takes Off creators have no regrets ending the show now, stating that they've put everything they have into Season 1.
Show creators Bryan Lee O'Malley and BenDavid Grabinski revealed to Rolling Stone that they have no plans for a second season. "It’s self-contained for now," O'Malley says. "We loved what we did. We put it all in there. We don’t have any ideas lying on the floor. We pretty much put them all in. I never say never, but right now, it seems like it would take about 50 different miracles simultaneously for another season to happen. So we’ll see." This was echoed by Grabinski, who added, "We’re not working on it. We have no official ideas. We put everything we had into this, and we think it has a really great ending that we’re proud of. I don’t make any plans in general.

Spoiler Alert: This story discusses several major plot developments throughout the animated series “Scott Pilgrim Takes Off,” currently streaming on Netflix.
On a bright day in late October, the creators of the new Netflix anime series “Scott Pilgrim Takes Off,” Bryan Lee O’Malley and BenDavid Grabinski, sit inside a Los Angeles arcade bar, trying to look relaxed.
“This is going to be a relief,” Grabinski says. But he doesn’t look quite convinced.
On its face, their show is the second adaptation of O’Malley’s beloved “Scott Pilgrim” graphic novel series, about the titular 20-something Canadian, his new American girlfriend, Ramona, and his quest to defeat her seven evil exes to stay with her. The first adaptation, of course, is director Edgar Wright’s 2010 cult movie “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World.” But even though the entire cast of that film — including Chris Evans, Brie Larson, Jason Schwartzman and Aubrey Plaza — returned to voice their characters,...

When “Scott Pilgrim’s Precious Little Life” first released in August 2004, a key part of the graphic novel’s premise was a major third-act surprise. Some talk of “subspace travel” aside, the first 100 pages of Bryan Lee O’Malley’s breakout hit tell an ordinary slice-of-life tale about an unemployed Canadian slacker, his terrible band, the 17-year-old he’s sort of dating, and the cool American girl he actually wants to date. In the comic’s third act, title hero Scott gets assaulted on stage by Matthew Patel, one of the seven evil exes of Ramona Flowers, and the story suddenly reveals that A) Scott is one of the best hand-to-hand fighters in Toronto and B) everything is taking place in a universe that obeys video game logic, with crazy superpowers and extra lives and level ups.
At the time, the climax of “Precious Little Life” was a massive rug-pull moment.

Scott Pilgrim is back, but not in the way anyone expected. The "Street Fighter"-inspired directive in Bryan O'Malley's "Scott Pilgrim" comic and its Edgar Wright-directed 2010 movie adaptation is a simple one: 23-year-old Scott Pilgrim (Michael Cera) must defeat the seven Evil Exes of Ramona Flowers (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) in order to date her. He kicks all of their butts and does some soul-searching to better himself for Ramona. Loosely inspired by O'Malley's early adulthood, the Toronto-set "Scott Pilgrim" is a superlative tale about starting new relationships after messy breakups and the past romantic ties that haunt you and your new partner. In Scott's world of video game vernacular and shōnen-inspired duels, an ex might try to behead their ex's new beau with a ninja katana.
Almost two decades after the first "Scott Pilgrim" comic, the "Scott Pilgrim Takes Off" Netflix anime signifies that O'Malley rethought Ramona's dynamic with her Evil Exes.

"Scott Pilgrim Takes Off" is full of surprises. The new Netflix anime "reboot" of the familiar franchise, which features characters from Bryan Lee O'Malley's comics (O'Malley co-created the show) and voice actors from Edgar Wright's movies, takes a narrative left turn right out of the gate. Instead of winning his fight against Ramona's first evil ex Matthew Patel (Satya Bhabha), Scott (Michael Cera) loses, seemingly dying and staying dead for the majority of the season.
That isn't the only major twist in the increasingly meta series, though. Fans also get a time-traveling older Scott (Will Forte), several unlikely romantic couplings, an arc featuring a filmmaker named Edgar Wrong, and redemption stories for several major villains. In general, "Scott Pilgrim Takes Off" seems to take the road less traveled by O'Malley's first version of the story, reimagining its bad...

Edgar Wright's Cornetto Trilogy is one of those movie trilogies that is linked in nearly every way except narratively. In other words, while visual elements, themes, actors and even jokes repeat between 2004's "Shaun of the Dead," 2007's "Hot Fuzz" and 2013's "The World's End," the films don't actually share any characters or even take place in the same universe. That's because it was formed as a joke in and of itself at first, with a throwaway reference to the Italian mini-ice cream cones in "Shaun" leading to Wright and actor/co-writer Simon Pegg attempting to emulate (and lightly parody) other thematic trilogies such as the "Three Colours" trilogy by Krzysztof Kieślowski.
Ever since "The World's End," there's been no further reference to Cornettos or the characters and events in the Trilogy in Wright's work — until now. As Wright's film adaptation of creator Bryan Lee O'Malley's "Scott Pilgrim" series of comics,...

This post contains spoilers for "Scott Pilgrim Takes Off" and "Scott Pilgrim vs. The World."
You might have varied expectations from "Scott Pilgrim Takes Off" — the animated Netflix series that is based on the "Scott Pilgrim" graphic novels by Bryan Lee O'Malley — but it is not a recreation of 2010's "Scott Pilgrim vs. The World." The film, rightfully, is beloved for various reasons throughout its journey from box-office bomb to cult classic, be it its fun videogame-style aesthetics or the unabashed celebration of its quirky, inventive core. Instead of using the film as a base to expand upon its arcade-fighting structured narrative, "Scott Pilgrim Takes Off" completely flips the script and dives right into mystery-thriller territory while still retaining the quirks of the original.
The ensemble cast from the film adaptation has returned for this new adventure, lending more immersion to this fresh story from the get-go, as these are...

The following article contains spoilers for "Scott Pilgrim Takes Off."
The new Netflix anime "Scott Pilgrim Takes Off" gives a whole new twist to the 2010 Edgar Wright movie "Scott Pilgrim vs. The World." (Wright is an executive producer on the anime and is called "Edgar Wrong" in the show.) As it turns out, the movie is part of the universe of the anime, and it doesn't get the story exactly right. "Scott Pilgrim Takes Off" is the "real" story of the meeting of Ramona Flowers (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) and Scott Pilgrim (Michael Cera). Scott is kidnapped, and the gang has to deal with the evil exes and some wild circumstances -- including a movie being shot about the whole thing -- to get him back.
The story of their meeting, the search for Scott, and their reunion are covered in the eight episodes we've been given this season. However, there...

(Editor’s note: The following article contains mild overarching plot spoilers for “Scott Pilgrim Takes Off.”)
After endless reboots, sequels, and revivals, fans of big movies and TV shows aren’t clamoring for more the way they once were. But with “Scott Pilgrim Takes Off,” Netflix and creators Bryan Lee O’Malley and BenDavid Grabinski show that a franchise reset doesn’t mean the death of creativity or more of the same; it can be a fresh opportunity for a beloved property like “Scott Pilgrim” to completely revamp itself and find a brand new audience — while still satisfying old fans.
With one general spoiler for the entire series ahead, “Scott Pilgrim Takes Off” is not the story of O’Malley’s six graphic novels, which wrapped up in the same year as Edgar Wright’s big-screen adaptation “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World” — and it’s not that movie either. Whether your knowledge of the Scott Pilgrim franchise is limited to 2010’s live-action Scott Pilgrim vs. the World movie, or you’ve been a devoted reader of Bryan Lee O’Malley’s graphic novels since 2004, there’s absolutely no way you could have predicted the game-changing twist at the heart of Netflix’s anime-inspired series Scott Pilgrim Takes Off. And if you say you did, you’re lying.

Plot: Scott Pilgrim meets the girl of his dreams, Ramona Flowers, and discovers he must defeat her seven evil exes in order to date her. But this time, things get even more complicated. Do you feel that? The disturbance in the distance, in the general direction of Toronto, Canada? That's a sign that the Scott Pilgrim universe is changing. Fans have known for a while now to expect something slightly different from "Scott Pilgrim Takes Off," as Edgar Wright previously noted (via Empire) that the show "doesn't just expand the universe, but also... well, just watch it." Still, I'm not sure anyone anticipated the show being quite so much of a departure from the original, especially with all those deceptively faithful trailers Netflix dropped.
If you're somehow reading this without having watched the new season in its entirety, this is your sign to stop here and go catch up. Everyone else: let's unpack what we just saw, shall we? This epic reimagining of the Scott Pilgrim story comes straight from original comic author Bryan Lee O'Malley himself, who co-created and co-wrote the new show with BenDavid Grabinski.

Editor’s Note: This review contains spoilers.
From its marketing and anime-styled opening credits, Scott Pilgrim Takes Off could be confused for a straightforward adaptation of Bryan Lee O’Malley’s Scott Pilgrim graphic novel series, albeit one determined not to step on the toes of Edgar Wright’s Scott Pilgrim vs. the World. Many scenes from the Netflix series, particularly in the first episode, are staged almost identically to their equivalents in Wright’s 2010 film, and the entire cast returns to voice their animated counterparts. Once again, Scott Pilgrim (Michael Cera) is poised to fight the seven evil exes of his dream girl, Ramona Flowers (Mary Elizabeth Winstead).
By the time the first episode concludes, however, Scott Pilgrim Takes Off has firmly announced its intention to go in another direction, as well as clarified the meaning of its title in the process: that Scott Pilgrim is nowhere to be found.

When it was released in 2010, Edgar Wright’s Scott Pilgrim vs. the World was considered a disappointment. It grossed less than $50 million at the box office, on a reported production budget of $85 million. And the reviews, while mostly positive, were less than enthusiastically so.
In hindsight, though, Wright’s adaptation of Bryan Lee O’Malley’s beloved 2000s series of graphic novels was simply ahead of its time. Its mash-up of genre and tone, and its ability to make absurd comic book imagery work in live-action, has earned it an ever-increasing cult following.

The upcoming anime series Scott Pilgrim Takes Off features the entire main cast from the 2010 film adaptation, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World -- and is all started with one email.
According to Netflix, director Edgar Wright, known for his work on Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, once posed a simple question via email: "Scott Pilgrim... to be continued?" The message was sent to the cast of the 2010 live-action film. Within a matter of hours, he received an enthusiastic "yes" from the entire cast. Wright revealed that the cast of the 2010 movie has remained friends as their careers flourished. He also added that they continued to use the same 2010 email chain to stay in contact: "Hearing the actors play their parts again was emotional, heartwarming, and hilarious,” Wright said, continuing. “We’re giving them an opportunity to revisit something that meant a lot to them, but they also are bringing their years of experience,...

Scott Pilgrim is back! The entire original cast of Scott Pilgrim vs. the World is returning to reprise all of their roles in the new Netflix anime series titled Scott Pilgrim Takes Off. The series is being developed by the original comics creator, Bryan Lee O’Malley.
Since Scott Pilgrim vs. the World came out after the comics ended in 2010, the IP has maintained a healthy cult following with fans reading and rereading the graphic novels. But no big Scott Pilgrim property has come out since then, so you can imagine how O’Malley’s biggest fans are pretty thirsty by now. While it will be based on the comics, this new production will give all the fans a unique story and expand the world of Scott Pilgrim into something new. The trailer for Season 1 of Scott Pilgrim Takes Off offers a new look at the adaptation, which will be more than just the graphic novel animated.

It’s a battle of the exes like you’ve never seen before in the first full look at Scott Pilgrim Takes Off, the new anime series from Netflix.
The two-minute teaser for the show, created for television by executive producers and co-showrunners Bryan Lee O’Malley and BenDavid Grabinski, debuted during New York Comic Con on Saturday. As part of the hour-long panel, O’Malley and Grabinski not only presented the trailer and teased the series, but confirmed that Julian Cihi will voice the Katayanagi Twins (Kyle and Ken).
The trailer takes fans back to Toronto “not too long ago” as Scott asks out Ramona Flowers, the “girl of my dreams.” But in order to date her, Scott must defeat her “seven evil exes.” Electric battles and even more electric guitar riffs set up a new chapter in the Scott Pilgrim saga, which sees the return of the live-action cast as their respective characters.
