Based on the book of the same name by Ernest Cline, "Ready Player One" takes viewers to 2045, where Wade Watts (Tye Sheridan) dives into a video game world of the Oasis to track down the Easter egg hidden by late creator James Halliday (Mark Rylance). Finding the egg will make the player rich and give them ownership of the virtual world that millions occupy for hours each day. 

Wade has spent years searching for a path to the item, and he keeps coming up short until he meets a player named Art3mis (Olivia Cooke), who works with him to find the clues and the three challenges that lead to highly coveted keys. Their success is threatened by Nolan Sorrento (Ben Mendelsohn), an evil businessman and former employee of Halliday, who uses his team of Sixers to track down the Easter egg for his betterment.

"Cool story, man." The 2010 cult-classic film Scott Pilgrim vs. the World is chock-full of one-liners and beloved, riotous characters, including the gloriously deadpan Kim. The drummer and ex-girlfriend to Scott is played to perfection by Alison Pill, helping to bring to life the delicious ensemble first laid out in Bryan Lee O'Malley's iconic graphic-novel series. The creator was then heavily involved in Edgar Wright's acclaimed film adaptation — and next came the highly anticipated anime series on Netflix. Scott Pilgrim Takes Off has been perceived to be a one-and-done sort of project, but, of course, we're itching for more. MovieWeb was fortunate to catch up with Pill, who had reunited with her film co-stars for the animated show, to gather any additional insight into the thrilling franchise's future. She told us:

The animated series Scott Pilgrim Takes Off, based on Bryan Lee O'Malley's graphic novels, debuted on Netflix in November 2023 to widespread acclaim and initial discussions about a second season. However, it was revealed earlier this week that the show will not be returning and has been canceled. Someone who disagrees with that label is creator OMalley, who reiterated his view on the reported demise of the single-season series.

Thirteen years later, the entire cast returned for Scott Pilgrim Takes Off, a new animated series that debuted on Netflix last year. While the chances of a second season were already slim, the streaming service has made it official: Scott Pilgrim Takes Off has been cancelled.

O’Malley confirmed the news on X/Twitter. “It’s been one year since Scott Pilgrim Takes Off came out. It was an honor to work with all of the cast & staff around the world. It was like conducting a symphony orchestra every day. From the moment [co-writer BenDavid Grabinski] sparked the idea, the project felt like a one of a kind miracle,” O’Malley wrote. “Anyway, we were recently informed that the show will Not return.

Scott Pilgram Takes Off will not be returning for a second season. The news comes from creator Bryan Lee O'Malley, who revealed news of the cancellation on his X account. The show premiered in November 2023.

Netflix has officially axed yet another popular series. Scott Pilgrim Takes Off is the latest victim of the streamer's vendetta against good shows. Based on the graphic novels by Bryan Lee O'Malley, Scott Pilgrim Takes Off brought Edgar Wright back to the franchise as an executive producer, along with almost the entire voice cast from Wright's original movie, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Bryan Lee O'Malley, who served as co-developer and an executive producer on the show, declared that Netflix have axed the series. "We were recently informed that the show will Not return," O'Malley wrote. Thankfully, it's not all bad news. Unlike Netflix's other canceled shows, like Glow, Scott Pilgrim Takes Off closed out its story within the first season. His tweet continued:

The Morpho machine is shutting down. Apple TV+ has canceled “The Big Door Prize” after two seasons, Variety has confirmed. The series, from Skydance Television and Cj Enm/Studio Dragon, ended its Season 2 run on June 12.

“The Big Door Prize” comes from writer David West Read (“Schitt’s Creek”) and is based on the M.O. Walsh novel of the same name. The whimsical series earned solid nods in Season 1, which aired in spring 2023 and starred Chris O’Dowd, Gabrielle Dennis, Josh Segarra, Ally Maki, Djouliet Amara, Sammy Fourlas, Crystal Fox and Damon Gupton.

When “Scott Pilgrim’s Precious Little Life” first released in August 2004, a key part of the graphic novel’s premise was a major third-act surprise. Some talk of “subspace travel” aside, the first 100 pages of Bryan Lee O’Malley’s breakout hit tell an ordinary slice-of-life tale about an unemployed Canadian slacker, his terrible band, the 17-year-old he’s sort of dating, and the cool American girl he actually wants to date. In the comic’s third act, title hero Scott gets assaulted on stage by Matthew Patel, one of the seven evil exes of Ramona Flowers, and the story suddenly reveals that A) Scott is one of the best hand-to-hand fighters in Toronto and B) everything is taking place in a universe that obeys video game logic, with crazy superpowers and extra lives and level ups.

Do you feel that? The disturbance in the distance, in the general direction of Toronto, Canada? That's a sign that the Scott Pilgrim universe is changing. From its marketing and anime-styled opening credits, Scott Pilgrim Takes Off could be confused for a straightforward adaptation of Bryan Lee O’Malley’s Scott Pilgrim graphic novel series, albeit one determined not to step on the toes of Edgar Wright’s Scott Pilgrim vs. the World. Many scenes from the Netflix series, particularly in the first episode, are staged almost identically to their equivalents in Wright’s 2010 film, and the entire cast returns to voice their animated counterparts. Once again, Scott Pilgrim (Michael Cera) is poised to fight the seven evil exes of his dream girl, Ramona Flowers (Mary Elizabeth Winstead).

By the time the first episode concludes, however, Scott Pilgrim Takes Off has firmly announced its intention to go in another direction, as well as clarified the meaning of its title in the process: that Scott Pilgrim is nowhere to be found.

When it was released in 2010, Edgar Wright’s Scott Pilgrim vs. the World was considered a disappointment. It grossed less than $50 million at the box office, on a reported production budget of $85 million. And the reviews, while mostly positive, were less than enthusiastically so.
