On Sunday, the 77th annual Tony Awards were held, hosted by Broadway and film actress Ariana DeBose at the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts in New York City. The ceremony saw wins for Sarah Paulson, Jonathan Groff and Daniel Radcliffe. Several notable faces took the stage as presenters, including Angelina Jolie, Brooke Shields, Nick Jonas and even former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.
This year’s nominations raised some skeptical responses over the omission of the fan-favorite revival of The Wiz and Appropriate‘s nomination for costume design. The ceremony was also deemed “dull” by many viewers citing numerous on-stage speech fumbles and a lack of stage presence from presenters and award winners.
Regardless, fans were excited to see their favorite faces take home their wins. Stereophonic and Alicia Keys‘ musical Hell’s Kitchen swept the categories with 13 nominations. Paulson returned to the stage after 13 years and snagged a win,...

While Jay-Z and Alicia Keys’ performance of “Empire State of Mind” at the Tony Awards Sunday was one of the ceremony’s buzzy moments, it also sparked rumblings that their performance was pretaped.
According to sources, and reporting by The New York Times, their segment, which was shown onstage via a video screen, was indeed prerecorded. Their performance came at the end of a medley of songs from Hell’s Kitchen, which were performed by the cast of the musical live onstage at the Lincoln Center’s David H. Koch Theater.
Keys is a producer on the musical, and also provided the show’s score, which includes preexisting songs such as “Empire State of Mind” and “Fallin’,” as well as new material.
After the cast performance onstage, Keys was wheeled out playing piano, where she started playing and singing “Empire State of Mind.” She then ran out into the audience,...

Welcome to Tony Talk, a column in which Gold Derby contributing theater editors David Buchanan and Sam Eckmann offer Tony Awards analysis. The day after the 2024 Tony Awards, we dissect how “The Outsiders” won Best Musical in this incredibly competitive season, discuss the close musical acting races, our favorite performer wins and size up those musical performances.
David Buchanan: Hey Sam! We have finally crossed the finish line of the 2024 Tony Awards! I thought it was extremely refreshing to watch a ceremony where there were so many categories truly up for grabs, and the winners really reflect just how competitive a year it was with no one juggernaut of a show taking home double-digit prizes like we’ve had in some recent years. In the final stretch, we had both come around to “The Outsiders” winning the top prize of Best Musical, and it did well across the board with...

Hell’s Kitchen was the first of the nominated musicals to get a performance at the 2024 Tony Awards, and the number featured Alicia Keys and Jay-Z reuniting to perform their hit “Empire State of Mind.”
But the semi-autobiographical show, for which Keys composed the score and helped arrange the music and served as a producer, ended the night losing the top prize of best musical and winning only two awards despite going into the 2024 Tonys with a leading 13 nominations.
Hell’s Kitchen had been tied with Stereophonic as the most-nominated productions this year, but the play won five awards, including best play, on Sunday night. Hell’s Kitchen’s wins were in the categories of best actress (Maleah Joi Moon) and featured actress (Kecia Lewis) in a musical.
The best musical prize ended up going to 12-time nominee The Outsiders.

There were a ton of “Hollywood names” at the 77th Tony Awards on Sunday night, which undoubtedly helped to elevate interest in a nationwide telecast that is always a bit of a tough sell, given that it celebrates shows that relatively few people outside — or even inside — the tri-state area have actually seen.
Among the A-listers on hand this year were Academy Award winner Ariana DeBose, returning as the host for the third time; presenters such as Angelina Jolie and Jennifer Hudson, Oscar winners both; performers including Alicia Keys, Jay Z, Pete Townshend and yet another Oscar winner, Eddie Redmayne; and worthy honorees like Jeremy Strong (best actor in a play for An Enemy of the People) and Sarah Paulson (best actress in a play for Appropriate), each of whom has an Emmy at home, and Daniel Radcliffe (best featured actor in a play for Merrily We Roll Along), the...

Angelina Jolie and Debra Martin Chase took home the Tony Award for best musical for The Outsiders.
The show takes place in Tulsa, Oklahoma, in 1967, when Ponyboy Curtis, his best friend, Johnny Cade and their Greaser family of “outsiders” battle with their rivals, the Socs, according to the musical’s description. Over the course of the show, nominated for 12 Tonys, the family members dream about who they want to be in a world that may never accept them.
The musical was up against Hell’s Kitchen, Illinoise, Suffs and Water for Elephants for the final award of the evening. Among industry members, the best musical category was the most up in the air leading up to the Tony Awards — though Hell’s Kitchen and The Outsiders were viewed by many as the leading contenders. The musical also took home best direction, lighting design and sound design.

The Outsiders and Stereophonic took home the top prizes of best musical and best play at the 77th Annual Tony Awards on Sunday.
The best musical race had been one of the closest categories heading into Sunday’s ceremony, with The Outsiders, a story about young boys growing up in a rough setting, based on S.E. Hinton’s best-selling novel, and Hell’s Kitchen, featuring a score by Alicia Keys, seen as the top contenders, amid other contenders including Water for Elephants, Illinoise and Suffs. The two battled for awards throughout the night, with The Outsiders picking up a key win for director Danya Taymor and Hell’s Kitchen earning first-time acting wins for Maleah Joi Moon and Kecia Lewis.

Jay-Z and Alicia Keys performed their hit “Empire State of Mind” at the 2024 Tony Awards as part of a colorful and energetic number showcasing Keys’ best musical contender, Hell’s Kitchen.
Keys was wheeled out on stage playing piano and kicked off singing the song, before trading verses with Maleah Joi Moon, a Tony nominee who stars in the musical loosely based on Keys’ life growing up in New York. Broadway’s busy, busy 2023-24 season has been building to this night for months, with new show after new show crowding the spring and making for what promises to be — in some categories anyway — a race tighter than the rock band of Stereophonic. Ok, maybe not that tight, but what is?
In all, 36 productions were eligible for competition — five new musicals, 10 new plays, six musical revivals, and five play revivals — with 28 actually making the nominations list. The two most-nominated shows, with 13 categories each, are Best Play nominee Stereophonic and Best Musical nominee Hell’s Kitchen.
No fewer than 70 nominees were Broadway first-timers, including four Stereophonic performers, two from The Outsiders, Mary Jane‘s Rachel McAdams and, at 21 the youngest nominee, Hell’s Kitchen‘s Maleah Joi Moon. Jessica Lange, at 75, hits the other end of the age spectrum for acting nominees, with Jonathan Tunick, already an Egot, tonight’s overall...

Tony Awards nominations were announced on Tuesday, April 30 by Jesse Tyler Ferguson and Renée Elise Goldsberry. While the nominations for the 77th annual Tony Awards were determined by approximately 60 theatre professionals, winners were decided by hundreds of members of the Broadway community.
A whopping 36 shows were eligible for consideration by the nominating committee. On the play side, there were 10 original works and five revivals in the running for nominations. Over on the musical side, 15 new tuners were in contention for bids as were six musical revivals. The cutoff date for eligibility was Thursday, April 25.

The first Broadway revival of the late Stephen Sondheim’s infamous flop “Merrily We Roll Along” will win the most Tony Awards of any show at the upcoming 77th annual ceremony, according to our official odds in all 26 categories. The original production, which ran for only 16 official performances back in 1981, earned a single nomination for Sondheim’s score, but this time around it will claim six trophies including Best Musical Revival, three performance awards, Best Director and Best Orchestrations.
The blockbuster musical revival will best by two a duo of plays – David Adjmi’s “Stereophonic,” the zeitgeist-grabbing production about the tumultuous recording sessions of a band on the brink of superstardom, and Branden Jacobs-Jenkins‘ “Appropriate” – that will each win four trophies apiece. Shaina Taub’s suffragist musical “Suffs” is right behind with three victories. Nominations leader “Hell’s Kitchen” will score only two wins, while nominations runner-up “The Outsiders” will likely go home empty-handed.

With important discussions raised recently about whether (and which) new categories should be added to the Tony Awards competition — Hair, Wig & Makeup? Casting? Ensemble? Projections? — allow me an unimportant one: Best Coin Toss, because that’s what so many predictors will rely on for a season crammed with excellent nominees.
Sarah Paulson or Jessica Lange? Coin toss. Appropriate? Purlie Victorious? An Enemy of the People? Coin toss, coin toss, coin toss. Five cast members of Stereophonic? Get plenty of change.
But Tony predictions are as much a part of the annual Broadway tradition as red carpets and go-for-broke musical numbers. So with that in mind, I’ll get on with the coins, the hair-splitting and more than a few passionate opinions. Here is Deadline’s annual roster of predictions for the 2024 Tony Awards, airing this Sunday evening on CBS.

The day before the 2024 Tony Awards, June 15th, will mark 40 years to the day since Kecia Lewis made her Broadway debut in “Dreamgirls.” After four decades in the industry, the actress will finally be attending Broadway’s biggest celebration as a first-time Tony nominee. “I had let go of the idea that that would happen for me,” admits Lewis, but her powerful performance in this season’s “Hell’s Kitchen” has finally unlocked this “surreal” full circle moment. Watch the exclusive video interview above.
Lewis portrays Miss Liza Jane in the new Alicia Keys musical. She is a longstanding resident of Manhattan Plaza, and encounters Ali (Maleah Joi Moon) in the artist housing complex’s famed “Ellington Room.” Liza provides a safe space for the young girl, while sharing wisdom and teaching her piano.

Galeca: The Society of LGBTQ Entertainment Critics unveiled nominations for their 2nd annual Dorian Theater Awards on Monday, March 13. Galeca’s 39-member theater wing decided this season’s crop of nominees, which honor the best of Broadway and Off-Broadway.
The nominations list is dominated by the current revival of “Merrily We Roll Along” and new play “Stereophonic.” Both productions netted six nominations a piece. In the case of “Merrily,” that tally includes bids for its Tony-nominated trio of stars: Jonathan Groff, Lindsay Mendez, and Daniel Radcliffe. “Stereophonic” managed one better with four members of its cast nominated in the same featured performance category: Will Brill, Eli Gelb, Tom Pecinka, and Sarah Pidgeon. The individual acting races at the Dorian Awards are gender neutral.
The Best Broadway Musical category features Tony Award nominees “Hell’s Kitchen,” “Illinoise,” “The Outsiders,” and “Suffs,” along with the closed David Byrne tuner “Here Lies Love” and soon-to-be closing “Lempicka.

Alicia Keys is speaking out after making Broadway history with her new musical Hell’s Kitchen.
The musical features a score written by Alicia, including many of her greatest hits and some new songs written for the show. The story is loosely based on the Grammy winner’s childhood growing up in New York City’s Hell’s Kitchen neighborhood in a building full of artists.
The 2024 Tony Awards nominations were announced on Tuesday (April 30) and Hell’s Kitchen is the most-nominated musical of the year with 13 nods.

“I kind of lost it, kind of freaked out, and I was super excited, particularly that all of the collaborators on this project are seeing so much love and so much greatness for their brilliance. I’m so excited for everybody and for Hell’s Kitchen. It’s just like, ‘Whoa!

Alicia Keys was doing a meditation Tuesday morning to try to stay calm amid some nerves ahead of the Tony nominations announcement.
After finishing the meditation, Keys said she received a call, alerting her to the fact that Hell’s Kitchen, the semi-autobiographical musical for which she wrote the score and arranged the music, had been nominated for 13 Tony Awards, including best musical. And that’s when she lost her cool.

Keys has been working on this project for 13 years, with collaborators including book writer Kristoffer Diaz, director Michael Greif and choreographer Camille A Brown, and an Off-Broadway run in the fall.

Daniel Radcliffe’s post-“Harry Potter” career has long been dominated by his theater work, both in New York and London. On April 30, he finally scored his first Tony nomination, for his role in the musical “Merrily We Roll Along.”
Radcliffe’s buzzy stage work began in 2007 with a run in “Equus” on both sides of the pond. He powered a delightful, blockbuster revival of “How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying” in 2011 (Grammy nomination), and since then, he has chosen an eclectic mix of projects, work where his name alone can often get challenging — or even just serious — work funded. Think the occasionally dense “The Cripple of Inishmaan,” the provocative “Privacy,” or the genre-bending experiment “The Lifespan of a Fact.” He’s long been an asset to the NY stage scene, and this morning’s recognition long-deserved.

Close races and sharp elbows are likely when the 2024 Tony Award nominations are announced Tuesday morning. With so many shows opening during the onslaught of the past two weeks, nominators might still be clearing their minds — and maybe taking a moment to eat and breathe — as they ponder and re-ponder the 36 productions that opened on Broadway between April 28, 2023, and April 25, 2024.
Some of the nominations are no-brainers: The much-praised and hugely popular Merrily We Roll Along is a sure bet for all concerned, but what about more polarizing fare? Cabaret, Here Lies Love, Water for Elephants, I’m looking at you.
A selection of categories will be read live on CBS Mornings at 8:30 am Et, and a full livestream of the announcements will follow at 9 a.m. Et on the official Tony Awards YouTube page.

A new musical, a musical revival and a new play with music will dominate the 2024 Tony Awards nominations, according to our official odds in 17 of the 26 categories. The latest revival of the classic John Kander and Fred Ebb musical “Cabaret,” fresh off a smash run on the West End, and the new musical “Hell’s Kitchen” that is loosely based on the life of Alicia Keys and her music will both net at least seven nominations. New works “Days of Wine and Roses,” “Here Lies Love” and “Suffs” and the starry revival of Stephen Sondheim‘s notorious flop “Merrily We Roll Along” will also earn substantial nominations tallies.
Playwright David Adjmi‘s “Stereophonic” will lead this year’s crop of plays and play revivals with at least five nominations. Right behind are five other works – two new shows and three revivals – that will all tie at least four nominations apiece,...

The 2023-2024 Broadway season that kicked off last June with the opening of “Grey House” featured 36 productions of new and revived musicals and plays. “This crazy whirlwind of a season has finally come to an end,” declares Sam Eckmann as we kick off our final Tony Awards nominations predictions slugfest of 2024. We begin our conversation with the musical categories and the ever-challenging race for Best Musical. Sam and I both feel “pretty secure” about the top three shows – “Suffs,” “Illinoise” and “Hell’s Kitchen” – and we surprisingly concur on the final two slots, predicting “Here Lies Love” and “The Outsiders.” There are so many potential nominees in contention, though, that we cite our alternate picks as I opt for “Days of Wine and Roses” as my number six, and Sam goes with “The Notebook.” Watch our full Tony Awards video slugfest above.
You can also watch both of us giving our wishlist picks, pleading to Tony nomination voters to choose some people who might be under the radar. Watch that video here.

The Tony Awards Administration Committee met for the fourth and final time during the 2023-2024 Broadway season on April 26, to discuss eligibility of 12 productions for the 77th Annual Tony Awards in 2024.
The productions discussed were: “The Wiz,” “Suffs,” “Stereophonic,” “Hell’s Kitchen,” “Cabaret,” “The Heart of Rock and Roll,” “Patriots,” “Mary Jane,” “Uncle Vanya,” “Illinoise,” “Mother Play,” and “The Great Gatsby.”
The most impactful decision of this announcement is the determination that both Steve Carell and William Jackson Harper will be eligible for Lead Actor in a Play for the Lincoln Center Theatre revival of “Uncle Vanya.” Most prognosticators assumed that Harper would contend in the Featured Actor race. This category switch means that Lead Actor in a Play will have a guaranteed five nominees. “It’s not just about setting time and space, but it’s also about the dancers being time and being space,” explains Camille A. Brown of her work on “Hell’s Kitchen.” The choreographer found that the 1990s setting of the script, combined with music from Alicia Keys, allowed her to explore movement from multiple entry points. Watch the exclusive video interview above.
“Hell’s Kitchen” tells the story of Ali (Maleah Joi Moon), loosely adapted from Keys’ own coming-of-age journey in New York City. She lives in Manhattan Plaza, an artist residence in Hell’s Kitchen, under the eye of her over-protective mother (Shoshana Bean). Ali longs to dive into the beating heart of the city and live on her own terms. A chance encounter with a pianist in the building (Kecia Lewis) sets her on a path of self-discovery.

The Grammy-winning superstar matched in denim with the show’s young star Maleah Joi Moon on the red carpet on Saturday night (April 20) at the Shubert Theatre in New York City.
Maleah plays Ali, a character based on Alicia‘s younger self. The musical features many of the singer’s smash hit songs as well as some brand new tunes written for the show.
Also in attendance at the event were Shoshana Bean and Brandon Victor Dixon, who play Ali’s parents, and Kecia Lewis, who plays Ali’s piano teacher and mentor.
Rebellious and stifled by an overprotective single mother, Ali is lost until she meets her mentor: a neighbor who opens her heart and mind to the power of the piano. Set to the rhythm of the 90s, Hell’s Kitchen is a...

Nominations for the 39th Annual Lucille Lortel Awards were announced today by Amber Iman and George Abud, two stars of Broadway’s “Lempicka.” The Lortels honor outstanding achievement in Off-Broadway theater. The 2024 ceremony will take place on Sunday, May 5 at NYU Skirball Center. The Lucille Lortel Awards are produced by the Off-Broadway League and Lucille Lortel Theatre, with additional support provided by Tdf.
It’s common for productions to begin their life Off-Broadway before transferring to the Main Stem, so many of this year’s Tony Awards hopefuls are among the list of Lortel nominations. Chief among these contenders is “Hell’s Kitchen,” the semi-autobiographical musical from Alicia Keys. That tuner garnered five Lortel nominations. These include Best Musical, Best Choreography for Camille A. Brown, a Lead Performer bid for Maleah Joi Moon, and Featured Performer bids for Shoshana Bean and Kecia Lewis. All performance categories at the Lortel Awards are gender neutral.

I thought I was safe to boldly pronounce my initial 2024 Tony Awards predictions, but then Sufjan Stevens appeared to stomp all over them. As David Buchanan and I convened to discuss where we thought the musical nominations were headed this season, news broke that Off-Broadway’s dreamy dance show “Illinoise” will transfer to the St. James Theatre just in time to compete at this year’s ceremony. The show, based on Stevens’ seminal album, has thrown our Tony predictions into disarray. Watch our full video slugfest above.
“Illinoise” marks the 15th new musical of the 2023-2024 season. That’s more new tuners than any Broadway season since 1975-1976. Theatergoers this year are indeed spoiled with a glut of new shows, but predicting the coveted Best Musical category has become a titanic task.
