Directed by David Guy Levy, The Mandela Effect centers on Brendan, a computer game designer who, after the loss of his daughter, believes there may be a reason why people are misremembering important facts about their past. Robin Lord Taylor (Gotham), who plays Brendan’s concerned brother-in-law, previous worked with Levy on the 2012 feature Would [...]

In the first of a long list of titles stepping into the Specialty box office space is the French period drama Portrait of a Lady on Fire from director Céline Sciamma. The film, which stars Noémie Merlant and Adèle Haenel, was selected to compete for the Palme d’Or earlier this year at the Cannes Film Festival where Sciamma made history as the first woman to win the Queer Palm. It became a buzzworthy title during it festival run and will now have an exclusive one-week qualifying run in New York at the Angelika and in Los Angeles at the Arclight. Seeing as how it is a romantic drama, it will open in the top markets on Valentine’s Day of next year before expanding throughout the country in February and March.

"Either we're sliding between parallel realities... or it's a simulation, and it's glitching out." Gravitas has debuted an official trailer for a trippy, indie sci-fi thriller titled The Mandela Effect, the latest made by filmmaker David Guy Levy. For those unfamiliar, the "Mandela Effect" is the theory that people collectively misremember something (the best example being: The Berenstain Bears). The odd feeling of being wrong makes some start to question reality or believe in alternate timelines. This plays with that concept and takes it even further, throwing in some The Matrix and Source Code vibes. The film follows a man who becomes obsessed with facts and events that have been collectively misremembered by thousands of people. Believing the phenomena to be the symptom of something much larger, his obsession eventually leads him to question reality itself. The film stars Charlie Hofheimer, Aleksa Palladino, Robin Lord Taylor, Madeleine McGraw, and Clarke Peters.

You ever have a moment where you thought you knew something, only for it to turn out to be wrong. But you remember it being true. That's the Mandela Effect. Named after Nelson Mandela, when people remember him dying in the 80's in prison, but in reality, he died just recently in 2013. Other cases include titles of food brands or famous movie quotes. Most recently a lot of people believed there was the 1990 film with Sinbad called Shazaam but it doesn't really exist. It's so popular that people believe there is something deeper, which is why there will be a film coming out soon about just that.
The film aptly called The Mandela Effect will star Robin Lord Taylor, Charlie Hofheimer, Aleksa Palladino, and Clark Peters. It is to be directed by David Guy Levy and who will also c-write the script with Steffan Schlachtenhaufen.

This isn’t fake news. Periscope Entertainment has announced today that David Guy Levy will direct their upcoming psychological sci-fi thriller “The Mandela Effect,” which is written by Steffen Schlachtenhaufen. The film “a man who becomes obsessed with facts and events that have been collectively misremembered by thousands of people. Believing the phenomena to be the symptom of something much larger, his obsession eventually leads him to question reality itself.”
The title refers to the strange phenomena of mass groups of people collectively “remembering” events or things that never happened. The theory pulls its name from the bizarre case of many people believing that Nelson Mandela died in prison — going so far as to “recall” clips from a televised funeral — though the civil rights leader actually died in 2013. Other examples of the so-called effect include misquoted movie lines (“Luke, I am your father” is a biggie, so is ““Life is like a box of chocolates,...

While there may be a shortage of theatrical horror films scoring a nationwide release, there are still plenty of titles touring the festival circuit and coming out via VOD and DVD that are equally worthy of your attention. Unfortunately, films that don’t get the big-studio marketing treatment often wind up passed over by a lot of horror fans... or, sadly, overlooked entirely. To shed some light on some of these lesser-known features, we ran a piece last month spotlighting a series of impressive films released over the past five years which may not have received all the publicity they deserved (due to financial limitations, being overshadowed by larger scale releases, or myriad other reasons). For your consideration, today we're showcasing five more titles that may have passed you by, but are certainly worthy of your attention. We hope that even die-hard fans of the macabre will find a film...

Ever wonder what would have happened if Robert Zemeckis had stuck with Eric Stoltz and never brought in Michael J. Fox to take on the role of Marty McFly? Considering “Back to the Future” is a supreme piece of cinema, perhaps not, but don’t worry because filmmaker David Guy Levy did that work for you. Levy is here at San Diego Comic Con with a comic book called “Back to Back to the Future,” a piece that considers what might go down should the “Back to the Future” filmmakers go back in time to keep Eric Stoltz in the role of Marty McFly. It’s a fun idea and clearly “Back [ Read More ]

We're huge fans of Back to the Future here at the site, and when word hit that David Guy Levy had created a new series of comic books tied to a franchise we love and adore, we needed to be a part of it immediately. Titled Back to Back to the Future, Levy's comic is a fascinating one because he created a brand new adventure based on one of the more infamous behind-the-scenes stories. Essentially it shows us what would happen if the actual Back to the Future filmmakers went back in time to make sure Eric Stoltz was never replaced by Michael J. Fox during filming. There are six books in total, and all proceeds are being donated to the Young Storytellers Foundation, which helps protect the future of literacy through storytelling. See, it's all themed here. Director David Guy Levy and Writer Steffen Schlachtenhaufen have recorded an audio commentary to accompany their grisly thriller Would You Rather? The track, which you can download via Soundcloud below, is synced to the film, which stars Brittany Snow and Sasha Grey as two financially desperate women who, along with others in similar situations, are offered a way out of their troubles by a mysterious aristocrat (Re-Animator's Jeffrey Combs), whose “solution” involves the title game, a horrific series of one-ups with grisly consequences. John Heard, Lawrence Gilliard Jr., Eddie Steeples and Charlie Hofheimer also star.
Would You Rather? is available now via iTunes, Amazon and other digital vendors, and you can use the widget below to download the commentary to play along with the film (for your second viewing, of course – no doubt there's spoilers galore in there). It is set to start on the first note of music at the beginning of the film.

Recently, I got a chance to talk with writer-director David Guy Levy, who’s second feature film (after A Love Affair Of Sorts), Would You Rather, recently came out on VOD [my review can be found here].
The film stars a cavalcade of interesting actors, including Brittany Snow, Eddie Steeples, John Heard, Jonny Coyne, Jeffrey Combs, Enver Gjokaj, and Sasha Grey. Levy is also a successful producer, with Terri and August on the resume. Check out our interview below, and before/after/during, be sure to see the movie at SundanceNOW!

Years ago back when good men and women everywhere rode on horseback…or at the very least, horse and buggy (and eschewed those newfangled horseless carriages), I went to see a reissue of the classic film, ‘Jaws’. I had already seen it back when it was first released, back when it was vital for a cool kid to see the movie that everyone was talking about. On that occasion, I recall that after the movie was over, I felt like my eyes had been permanently glued-open, or at the very least, my eyelids had been sliced off. Hey, that reminds me of the film I’m supposed to be reviewing here, but please bare with me for a moment, okay?

Title: Would You Rather Director: David Guy Levy Starring: Brittany Snow, Sasha Grey, Jeffrey Combs, Jonny Coyne, Eddie Steeples, John Heard, June Squibb, Robin Lord Taylor, Enver Gjokaj, Charlie Hofheimer, Robb Wells A slice of dinner theater torture porn that attempts to mine the inner sadism of regular folks for squirm-inducing entertainment, “Would You Rather” comes across like a combination of “Saw” and 1995′s “The Last Supper,” but without any of the queasy delight that designation might connote. Scripted by Steffen Schlachtenhaufen as a twisted exploration of the titular party game, director David Guy Levy’s movie isn’t wickedly playful enough to qualify as a darkly comedic horror romp, a la the “Final [ Read More ]

David Guy Levy's wonderfully twisted thriller Would You Rather (review here) is now in select theaters and available on VOD. With his Clue, Saw and House on Haunted Hill mash-up, Levy has conjured up an unforgettable and often uncomfortable affair.
Dread Central recently chatted with Levy about his indie project and heard more on how he got involved with this sick and twisted (albeit entertaining) game of Would You Rather with screenwriter Steffen Schlachtenhaufen, why Jeffrey Combs would be the best game show host ever, their plans for a potential sequel and much more.
Dread Central: Congrats on making one of the more uncomfortable movies I've had to sit through in a while- which I mean as a compliment of course (laughs).
David Guy Levy: Thanks! That's what we were aiming for so I'm glad to hear the movie worked for you (laughs).

IFC recently released Would You Rather to VOD and digital download services, and we’ve been provided with four clips to share with our readers. The movie stars Jeffrey Combs at the center of an exclusive dinner party that plays a deadly version of “Would You Rather.”
“What would you do if a millionaire offered you a chance to solve all your life’s problems? After the tragic death of her parents, Iris (Brittany Snow) is desperate to make ends meet while caring for her terminally ill younger brother. Shepard Lambrick (Jeffrey Combs), a seemingly philanthropic aristocrat, expresses an interest in helping them. He invites her to an exclusive dinner party that offers the chance at untold riches. When she arrives she finds herself in a group of similarly desperate individuals from the gruff middle aged Conway (John Heard) to the dark loner Amy (Sasha Grey). They soon find themselves...

Would You Rather – typically a harmless game of immature questions and self-discovery. Would you rather have a rewind button in your life, or a pause button? Would you rather make one new law of your choice or abolish an existing law? Would you rather go back in time and kill Hitler or bring five people back to life of your choosing? These go on for days, but all seem safe, right?
Well, since this is a dark, psychological, “torture porn” thriller, Would You Rather plays anything but nice. Instead of asking harmless questions of hypothetics, writer Steffen Schlachtenhaufen and director David Guy Levy have teamed to ask some unfortunately desperate victims questions with actual life and death consequences, creating a sickening scenario of power abuse with the worst of intentions.
Now I know what you’re thinking – just another hack “torture porn” effort which plants some lacking characters in a...

It never helps when a half-decent indie horror film is saddled with a title that's confusing, generic, or vague. There is an endless amount of solid (or at least decent) horror indies to be found on Amazon, iTunes, and Netflix -- so one could be forgiven for confusing "Truth or Dare" with "Truth or Die" or for mistaking "Would You Rather" with "Did You Know" or perhaps "Spin the Bottle." (How has there not been a horror film called "Spin the Bottle" yet??) Anyway, all of this is a hopefully amusing way to open a review with the opinion that, yes, the strange, savage, and appreciably dark Would You Rather is considerably more interesting than its (confusing/vague/generic) title may indicate.
The phrase "Would You Rather," as you probably know, is a reference to a game teenagers play. ("Would you rather kiss Janie or.... lick a dog's food bowl?...

David Guy Levy’s Would You Rather takes the cruel purity that lies under the surface of children’s games and takes it to the extreme. Gone are schoolyard pranks, naive sadism and the ability to “chicken out.” In their place are deadly stakes, earnest schadenfreude and no escape. Citing Kubrick’s Eyes Wide Shut, Jonathan Lynn’s Clue and Agatha Christie as influences, Levy dove into the project with gusto. And armed with a host that would match the childish glee of the game’s inspiration (genre icon Jeffrey Combs), the director succeeded in crafting a memorable and poignant twist on a familiar pastime. Several filmmakers have their own insight into what the recession has done to the middle class. Few of them have as much anger as David Guy Levy, director of “Would You Rather,” a sinister new thriller opening in theaters this Friday. Levy thinks of the general public as prey not to be hunted, but to be toyed with -- why eat the poor, when they can provide entertainment? It’s not the most optimistic outlook, admittedly. Brittany Snow is Iris, a broke medical assistant slaving away for wages that don’t even come close to what she needs. Her brother is suffering with an untold disease, and she’s abandoned her prior life to work at home and assist in his health. Levy tries to emphasize this backstory as pivotal without harping on the specifics, rendering it movie shorthand; maybe the one token moment of sincerity with her ailing bro...

Fango got some exclusive words with Combs about Would You Rather, which co-stars Prom Night’s Brittany Snow, C.H.U.D.’s John Heard and Smash Cut’s Sasha Grey.
Fangoria: How did you come to be a part of Would You Rather?
Jeffrey Combs: Would You Rather came out of the woodwork in a way, although through a fortuitous route. One of my oldest and best friends I’ve known since high school, his son’s best friend happened to be one of the associate producers for [the movie] as it was getting put together. They were looking for someone to play Shepard Lambrick, and he brought up my name. I had a meeting with the director, David Guy Levy, and we were off to the races.
Fang: What were your initial thoughts when you read the script?
Combs: I thought it was really finely crafted: Taut, motivated, nothing that didn’t progress one point to another.

Iris, desperate to find the means to pay for her sick brother’s mounting medical bills, agrees to attend what she thinks is a charity dinner. What she is really in store for is a deadly game of Would You Rather.
I am a big Jeffrey Combs fan, so I was curious when I heard that he was starring in a new flick that’s been garnering positive feedback from the festival circuit. The premise of an entire film based around a game of Would You Rather seemed enticing, but I had concerns regarding whether that premise would be able to carry an entire movie. My concerns were promptly alleviated.
