Everyone, get out your swords and sandals because we're heading back to the arena! Starz has just announced that it is currently developing a new "Spartacus" series! Forgive the excessive use of exclamation points, but I loved every minute of this show from the first moment to the last, including the prequel "Spartacus: Gods of the Arena."
The first season of the series was entitled "Spartacus: Blood and Sand" and debuted in 2010. Before the second season, star Andy Whitfield was diagnosed with early-stage non-Hodgkin lymphoma, leading to the prequel to give him time to recover. Sadly, he passed away, and the role was recast with Liam McIntyre for season 2, "Spartacus: Vengeance" and season 3, "Spartacus: War of the Damned."
The show was, as our title says, very sexy. Still, it was also a compelling drama about the titular Thracian gladiator who led a revolt of enslaved people against the Roman empire.

Stars: Nick Damici, Ethan Embry, Tom Noonan, Tina Louise, Rutanya Alda, Caitlin O’Heaney, Lance Guest, Erin Cummings, Larry Fessenden | Written by Eric Stolze | Directed by Adrián García Bogliano
Nick Damici has been a familiar face in the horror genre for years now. Primarily working with writer/director Jim Mickle, on whose films he has also co-written, this gruff, large but still oddly charming presence has impressed before but he was never given a true lead part until this film. With Mickle uninvolved, although long-time cohort Larry Fessenden produces and pops up in a cameo role, Damici takes centre stage in Late Phases, a film with the wonderfully juicy premise of a blind ‘Nam veteran getting revenge on a werewolf after it kills his best friend.
It feels appropriate to base this review around Damici as he is the chugging motor which drives the film and the beating heart which actually makes you invest in it.

Are you cold?’ ” Cummings tells People. “It was very cold that night — like an unusually cold Halloween night — my cousin invited the girls and their mom inside to get warm.”

It’s hard to believe that another South by Southwest Film Festival is almost upon us, and this year’s lineup is yet another stellar collection of indie films, shorts, documentaries and experiential projects from all over the world. As we prepare to bring our readers extensive coverage over the next week from Austin, here’s a look at the 11 genre-related films and TV shows we’re excited to check out during the festival, which begins on Friday, March 11th.
[Writer’s Note: During Sundance 2016, this writer had the privilege of covering two great genre films: Under the Shadow from Babak Anvari and Mickey Keating’s Carnage Park. Since I had the chance to catch both of these films back in January, I decided it wouldn’t be fair to include them here in my preview piece (however, genre fans attending SXSW should definitely check out both films during the fest, as they are equally incredible).]
In a Valley of Violence (Director/Screenwriter: Ti West)
Festival Synopsis: From Blumhouse, the film tells the story of a drifter named Paul who arrives in a small town, seeking revenge on the thugs who murdered his friend. Sisters Mary Anne and Ellen, who run the town’s hotel, help Paul in his quest for vengeance. Cast: Ethan Hawke, Taissa Farmiga, James Ransone, Karen Gillan, John Travolta (World Premiere)

Thoughts on last night's terrific "Halt and Catch Fire" coming up just as soon as I try to steal HBO to watch "Cat People"... I praised the second season of "Halt" after watching the four episodes AMC made available to critics in advance of the premiere. These next two episodes, and "10Broad36" in particular, have been even better, as they've built on the foundation laid about the perilous states of Mutiny, the Clark marriage, Gordon's physical and mental health, and Joe's attempt to be less of a... Joe. It's safe to say that Joe is back in full manipulator mode, but it's working better for the show than it did last season for a few reasons. First, he's actually being a visionary this time rather than some guy blowing up everyone's lives in order to make a slightly cheaper laptop no one will remember. Second, he's doing it against people who know what he's about,...

The last time ABC tried a retro series revolving around a group of ladies -- Pam Am -- it was a ratings disappointment and was cancelled after one season. Will The Astronaut Wives Club be a different story or the same old tune? Cancelled or renewed for a second season? Stay tuned.

Too little too late, but ABC has finally found the perfect companion piece for "Pan Am." A bright-and-glossy dose of '60s nostalgia mixed with easily digestible proto-feminism, ABC's "Astronaut Wives Club" premieres on Thursday (June 18) night, more than three years after "Pan Am" was cancelled and I suspect they're likely to be remembered in the same way: Period dramas with high production values, a fantastic cast that ABC will look back at yearningly and unrealized creative potential obscuring otherwise solid storytelling. Is there a hypothetical TV series about the wives of the Mercury astronauts that's more than a slightly superficial, slightly choppy and slightly misfocused showcase for fine performances and some snazzy retro-style? Absolutely, but there's still some virtue to this sort of watchable, somewhat nourishing summer entertainment, even in a landscape that's overflowing with summer viewing options. Thursday's exposition-heavy premiere episode begins in 1961 with Louise Shepard (Dominique McElligott...

Spartacus: Blood and Sand, Season 1: Episode 6 – “Delicate Things”
Written by Tracy Bellomo & Andrew Chambliss
Directed by Rick Jacobson
Originally aired February 26th, 2010 on Starz
While Ashur tries to push Batiatus into acting quickly at the news of Barca’s apparent betrayal, he tells his dominus that “When a man is pressed, lies flow with greater ease.” Daggers and deceit seem to run rampant in Spartacus, and not just in the Roman storylines. If the slaves are learning anything from their masters, it’s how to twist the tongue to their own ends.
Spartacus, our hero, is not exempt from the tactics. With newly-earned street cred., Spartacus uses the attention he receives to shape an elaborate escape fantasy for when his wife arrives to Capua. Part of that web is extending an invitation to the magistrate’s son to visit Batiatus’ villa so that Spartacus can gain access to an easily-concealable (and,...
