Netflix’s The Program: Cons, Cults, and Kidnapping is occasionally as hard to watch as it is impossible to ignore. Directed by Katherine Kubler, a former “student” of the troubled-teen-repair institution, the limited documentary series uncovers the appalling conditions of the now-defunct and abandoned Ivy Ridge boarding academy located in the wilds of Oswegatchie, New York.
Kubler attended or was incarcerated in Ivy Ridge from March 2004 to June 2005. She entered at age 15, kidnapped abruptly against her will in the middle of the night on the grievous charge of sipping a Mike’s Hard Lemonade at a previous school. Facing an unbelieving father, Kubler feels the forcefully-abandoned experience she endured stole her teenage years, and continues to embezzle large deposits from her adult psyche. Her post-traumatic stress and persistent panic attacks are a constant reminder of damage that cannot be undone.
Except maybe through long-form journalism. Kubler self-effacingly calls herself an “amateur gumshoe,...

Almost 20 years ago, the revival of Doctor Who almost began very differently, thanks to the most advanced version of the Cybermen. As it stands now, the Christopher Eccleston era of Doctor Who began with the Ninth Doctor, a product of the Time War having (at the time) presumably regenerated from the Eighth Doctor (before the intermediary War Doctor was introduced into franchise lore.)
The 2005 revamp almost began completely differently, starting with The Flood by Scott Gray, Gareth Roberts, Martin Geraghty, Roger Langridge, John Ross, Mike Collins, Anthony Williams, and Adrian Salmon. The story arc collects the final volume of Doctor Who Magazine comic strips starring the Eighth Doctor, published between July 2004 and February 2005, before the Ninth Doctor's televised debut. It features the future form of the Cybermen, which evolve into a completely inhuman cyborg body. It was also originally intended to kill off the Eighth Doctor in canon.

Who knew that Prince William was the president of BAFTA? If you didn’t get that memo, he and Princess Catherine attended those glittery British film awards this week to remind us all, where mostly white people took home the top prizes and kept the status quo intact. Elsewhere, Jennifer Garner joined the cast of “Party Down” Season 3 after 13 years away; James Marsden did, too, and he also hit more big parties all over Hollywood; the Daniels kept rolling with the DGA prize; and new filmmakers were given a huge step up by Sony Entertainment.

Doctor Who fans celebrated 50 years of the Doctor Who TV show last year, but some may not know that the first comic strip based on the show was published one year after the series launch, in TV Comic. Since then, Doctor Who has featured in numerous comic titles including Countdown, Doctor Who Magazine and Doctor Who Adventures in the UK. Andrew counts down Doctor Who's 10 best Cyberman stories from across the TV series, audio dramas and comic strips...
Cybermen; Doctor Who's other monster. The one no-one knows quite what to do with, who show glimpses of what they can do, but don't look like dislodging the upper echelon from its perch.
They're Arsenal, basically. What is Nightmare in Silver if not Mehmet Ozil? A big name attached with lots excitement generated, and sure there are some clever ideas, but ultimately it's not what was necessary. I'd apologise to Arsenal fans but what are they going to do? Throw a trophy at me?
Like the Cybermen presumably do between their on-screen appearances, the writers will be heading back to the drawing board to discuss what they've learned. Meanwhile, here's our list of the top ten Cybermen stories across the entirety of Doctor Who.

As soon as we thought we could predict the outcome of the Oscars, here comes another surprise! This one's brought to you by the Writers Guild of America. Picked for Best Original Screenplay was Christopher Nolan's "Inception." The director, famously dissed for not getting a Best Director Oscar nomination, may just win the Best Original Screenplay come Oscar night. Oscar front-runner, "The King's Speech" was not nominated because it didn't quality under union rules which prompted Nolan to say during his WGA acceptance award that he looked forward to a time when he could accept the award "without qualification."
That could be the beginning of a great script Mr. Nolan, go write it :happy
For adapted screenplay, I'm happy to report that Aaron Sorkin's fantastic script won! Based on "The Accidental Billionaires" by Ben Mezrich, "The Social Network" was the only film last year that I predicted to win this very category.

As hard as it may be to believe sometimes, someone (or someones) actually sits down and writes a movie or TV show before you end up seeing it at your local multiplex or on your favorite TV network. The people who do the sitting and the writing are, surprisingly, called writers and, like the Directors, the Golden Globes and the Oscars, they have their own awards show.
This week, the Writers Guild of America, which is the trade group and advocate for writers, announced its nominations for outstanding achievement in feature film and television, radio, news, promotional writing, and graphic animation during the 2009 season to be honored at the upcoming 2010 Writers Guild Awards on February 20, 2010, in Los Angeles and New York.
We realize that these nominations may not be as glamorous as the Golden Globes or the Oscars, but we kinda like writers around here and think they do a pretty important job.

Mad Men, 30 Rock, The Office, and newcomer Modern Family earned 3 nominations each. Meanwhile, popular fan favorite Glee received two. There are a lot of categories and nominees so I’m just going to mention the two big awards before the jump.
The nominees for Best Drama Series are: Breaking Bad, Dexter, Friday Night Lights, Lost, and Mad Men. The nominees for Best Comedy Series are: 30 Rock, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Glee, Modern Family, and The Office.

Awards heavyweights "Mad Men," "30 Rock" and "The Office" and buzzed-about newcomer "Modern Family" led the TV field for the 2010 Writers Guild Awards with three nominations each.
AMC's "Mad Men" and NBC's "30 Rock" and "The Office" are in the running for best drama/comedy series, and each received two nominations for episodic writing. "Family" made the cut for best comedy series, best new series and best episodic writing for a comedy series.
ABC's "Family" was one of two new shows to break into the best series categories along with Fox's quirky high-school dramedy "Glee," which faces "Family" in the best comedy series and best new series fields.

A Comic Book series depicting all-new tales from the early years of the X-Men releases its first issue this week.
Uncanny X-Men: First Class returns to the beginnings of the second generation team, with previously untold adventures featuring Cyclops, Storm, Banshee, Colossus, Nightcrawler, Wolverine and Phoenix.
This line-up had been introduced by Marvel in 1975, dramatically reviving the comic book after a sales slump had led to its cancellation five years earlier.
Written by Scott Gray, Roger Langridge and Jeff Parker, the new Uncanny X-Men: First Class was preceded by an introductory First Class Giant-size Special last month.
In this week's Issue 1, Professor Xavier invites the mysterious Inhumans into the X-Men's home, but when Wolverine and Gorgon meet, the party turns ugly. Nightcrawler faces a crisis of faith and searches for an answer in the Inhuman city Attilan - but has he found his salvation or ultimate destruction?

On the comic book spin rack in my apartment (rescued from a store closing and given to me by pals years ago), there’s a simple, ungrammatical declaration: “Wholesome Comics Entertaining.” Well, I’ve never worried about the “wholesome” part (that’s why there’s milk, not to mention cookies), but I Do believe comics should be entertaining. Here’s a superb, recent example of that.
It’s another one-shot featuring refugees from Marvel’s Monster Age a half-century ago (where Stan Lee, Jack Kirby, Steve Ditko & co. populated Strange Tales, Tales Of Suspense, Tales To Astonish, Journey Into Mystery & Amazing Adult Fantasy with giant creatures & invading aliens).
