A man returns home to Ladakh after many years in Maisam Ali’s In Retreat. His brother has passed away. Mourning brings him home but not quite. There’s a lot of perambulation; a fixed, finite moment where he crosses the threshold into his family house remains postponed. So he rambles through the night across lanes and streets of Ladakh.
Ali elides detail and explanations. He’s not interested in a routine verbalisation of family fault lines. The cracks in the distance that has sedimented over the years between the man and his family come instead through the reluctance. There are grudges and resentments held against him. He arrives on his home terrain but keeps deferring entering home itself. Confrontations are held off as long as one can. Pain and guilt, though, wedge themselves heavy and deep into the crevices of every frame.

Gaurav Madan’s critically acclaimed Barah by Barah (2024) has been released in theatres after making its rounds at various film festivals. It is set in the holy city of Benares, considered the focal point of the Hindu faith. People usually visit the ghats to undergo ceremonial tonsuring, seek absolution from sins, or culminate their cycle of birth, among other reasons. It is a place that displays the universal spectacle of life’s journey. Though such interplay between life and revelation remains at the narrative’s core, Barah by Barah is more about our collective inability to be with the moment and the world as it is. As a tale of a family caught between the crux and tradition, the film gives us a deeper understanding of the world. It is also about the fluctuating bonds and distances among family members. The film’s pace remains languid throughout its around two-hour run-time.

Mami Select: Filmed on iPhone is an initiative undertaken by the Mumbai Academy of Moving Image (Mami) to make short films shot on the iPhone 15 Pro Max. These filmmakers were mentored by veteran filmmakers like Vishal Bhardwaj, Vikramaditya Motwane and Rohan Sippy. The five short films are tales of individuals who deal with the challenging lives of the marginalized, the vulnerable, the impoverished, the alienated, and the troubled. Small errors snowball into unintended and unimaginable consequences. As a result, the principal characters...

Gyanendra Tripathi-starrer ‘Barah by Barah’ looks at life through the lens of a 'death photographer'

The upcoming film ‘Barah by Barah’, which has been shot on 16mm film, offers a unique perspective on life and death through the lens of a death photographer.
The film is set in Varanasi, and stars Gyanendra Tripathi of ‘Half CA’ fame and Geetika Vidya Ohlyan of ‘Thappad’ fame. The film has been directed by Gaurav Madan who met a photographer during a trip to Varanasi and found “immense cinematic potential” in the subject.
Talking about the film, Gaurav Madan said: “I hail from a small town called Jagadhri in Haryana. My parents had to let go of our ancestral home because the government decided to widen the adjacent highway. The house was razed in front of my eyes and we had to migrate to a drab housing colony.”
He continued: “Now, the entire town looks listless, like a big city clone. Progress is vital, of course, but there’s...

Embarking on the arduous journey of preparing for the Upsc, one of India’s most formidable competitive exams, has evolved from an enigma to a well-explored odyssey for young students. Sincere web series like Tvf Aspirants and Sandeep Bhaiya have acted as our guides, offering glimpses into the fiercely competitive world thriving in the heart of Rajinder Nagar, painting a vivid picture of the sacrifices, yearning, and challenges that define the journey. Yet, amid this familiar backdrop, Vidhu Vinod Chopra‘s latest outing, 12th Fail emerges as a breath of fresh air cutting across the clichés associated with the genre of the undying spirit of an underdog story. Adapted from Anurag Pathak’s eponymous novel and inspired by the real-life saga of Ips Officer Manoj Kumar Sharma, the film unveils a finely nuanced tale unraveling the indomitable spirit of a young student. Director Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s film ‘12th Fail’, marking its spirit of ultimate determination, has released its latest track ‘Restart’ sung by the rapper Raftaar. The song is a hardened motivational track which inspires you to restart and rewrite your story until it is what you want it to be.

Tathagat(Mubi)
Starring Harish Khanna, Ghanshayam Lalsa, Himanshu Bhandari
Written & Directed by Manav Kaul
Tathagat as the title suggests, is a meditative melancholic mood-piece on mortality. It is suffused with ideas and ruminations on the quality of life. But clearly the restless disjointed thought-processes do not culminate in any definitive cogent perceptions on the question that haunts the protagonist: what makes life worth living, if not memories?
Harish Khanna whom I’ve seen in powerful but mostly grey peripheral roles, is as grey as they come in this film. He is worshipped as a messiah of sorts in the Himalayan hamlet where the plot nestles uneasily. But Baba(as he is addressed by his disciples) is clearly not the committed godman that he is taken to be.
He has a guilty secret in his past which keeps raring its head like some of kind of a sinfully catchy tune that...

Aise Hee (Just Like That), directed by Kislay is a brilliant film that is quiet, moving, deep, surprising, and in the end, inspiring. It is the tale of an older woman challenging expectations of who she is supposed to be in her later years. Mrs. Sharma is the quiet ‘ideal’ wife of a government official living in a modest two-story house in the small town of Allahabad. When her husband suddenly dies, she is expected to follow Indian customs and move in with her son and grandchildren, but she has other plans. Mrs. Sharma wants, at long last, to explore her life and try new experiences, including meeting Sugandhi, a hairdresser, and Ali, a tailor who teaches her how to embroider. This soon starts the neighbours gossiping, resulting in family tensions that soon threaten to curtail her newfound freedoms. No spoilers from me! You will have to watch this fabulous movie to find out.

Another absolute highlight of the program of this year’s Indian Film Festival of Los Angeles (Iffla) is “Aise Hee” by Kislay. With his first feature film the Indian director tells the touching story of an elderly woman. The co-writer of Ivan Ayr acclaimed feature “Soni”, developed here on his own a truly mesmerizing drama.
Mrs. Sharma just lost her husband to whom she was married for over 50 years. Finally she is able to decide for herself, she thinks, and she politely refuses the offer of her daughter to move in with her. There is nothing against it, that the still vital and independent woman keeps living in her own house. But this is not the opinion of her son who lives next door to her. As a radio speaker he doesn’t earn very much. He struggles more and more to make ends meet and speculates on renting out...

Stars: Dev Patel, Radhika Apte, Jim Sarbh, Nish Nathwani, Harish Khanna, Sidhu Manpreet, Meherbaan Singh | Written and Directed by Michael Winterbottom
The Wedding Guest is directed by Michael Winterbottom and stars Dev Patel as Jay, a mysterious man who is travelling to Pakistan from Britain to attend a wedding with ulterior motives. Winterbottom’s film, while a decent effort is a largely missed opportunity to discuss a range of divisive and compelling themes on culture/social gender politics. Instead, the audience is treated to a simplistic thriller that is best described as a quick fix of sorts.
The Wedding Guest is mostly flat. It is a film that begins in an intriguing mysticism and soon turns into a conventional passionate love story that does not feel earned nor granted for this specific plot. Where The Wedding Guest flourishes is when it plays its hand at mysticism. The film has tension...

I think it’s safe to say that Dev Patel is an underrated leading man in Hollywood, that is, when he’s actually given a leading role. Those are few and far between for him. Still, when he’s allowed the chance, he shows his chops, even if the material is not up to snuff. Such is the case here with The Wedding Guest, a low-key thriller that begins with potential but slowly squanders it away. The key word here is slowly too, as everything about this film is slow. For a short movie, it feels twice as long. Throw in a terrible ending and this all adds up to a disappointment, Patel excluded. The film is a thriller that begins as a mystery. We begin by following a mysterious British Muslim man named Jay (Patel) on his journey from Britain to Pakistan. Soon, we realize that he’s been...
