From the director of Occupation Rainfall comes the brand new giant monster movie Devil Beneath, an Australian feature that was released in the US by Vertical Entertainment today.

Watch the official Devil Beneath trailer below for a peek at the film’s super-sized monster. It’s a bit hard to see, but it looks pretty cool and it’s certainly massive in size and scale!

Among the first batch of projects I wrote about when I first joined Arrow in the Head back in 2015 was an Australian creature feature called Red Billabong, which was described as being like “an Australian Jurassic Park“. The movie was released in its home country back in 2016, but never managed to make its way over to the U.S. But its North American fortunes are changing now, as the film has been acquired by Vertical Entertainment and they’re planning to give it a digital release in North America on January 13th. Red Billabong has been re-edited, re-mixed, re-scored, and retitled for this new release. It’s now going by the title Devil Beneath.

It has certainly not been a smooth road for Paramount’s release of “Ghost in the Shell,” to say the least. Criticized as yet another example of Hollywood whitewashing, the Scarlett Johansson-led film has faced nothing but controversy leading up to its March 31 release date.

While Johansson’s casting has been decried by many — including George Takei and Margaret Cho — one notable defender has been the original director of the classic 1995 anime version, Mamoru Oshii. In an interview with IGN, Oshii voiced his approval of Johansson and displeasure with fans who took issue with her portrayal of The Major.

“What issue could there possibly be with casting her?” Oshii asked. “The Major is a cyborg and her physical form is an entirely assumed one. The name ‘Motoko Kusanagi’ and her current body are not her original name and body, so there is no basis for saying that an Asian actress must portray her.

With Ghost in the Shell's theatrical release just days away, Paramount Pictures has released an action-packed clip featuring The Major (Scarlett Johansson) using her high-tech camouflage to hide from her enemy. We have already seen tiny bits and pieces of this epic water fight in the previously-released trailers and other pieces of footage, but this video gives us our best look yet at this whole scene as it unfolds. Paramount has released 8 new motion posters today for the hotly anticipated live action version of Ghost In The Shell. The anime adaptation, due for release March 31st, has been gradually gaining buzz following its impressive Super Bowl teaser trailer and with just over a month to go until it debuts, excitement is, understandably, quite high.

Last year, the casting of Scarlett Johansson to play the lead in “Ghost in the Shell,” a live-action adaptation of the classic Japanese anime series centered around Major Motoko Kusanagi, was met with controversy and backlash. Hiring a white actress to play a Japanese character seemed to critics and fans of Masamune Shirow’s iconic franchise like another case of whitewashing.

Now the actress in the center of the controversy has once more addressed the issue. “I certainly would never presume to play another race of a person,” said Johansson in a recent interview with Marie Claire. “Diversity is important in Hollywood, and I would never want to feel like I was playing a character that was offensive.”

Earlier today, the first trailer for Paramount's highly-anticipated Ghost in the Shell adaptation, the studio has released even more new footage. Paramount has unveiled the first two minutes of the movie, which fans of the original anime movies will certainly recognize. This video unveils the "shelling sequence," with star Scarlett Johansson. Tapping into Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex and Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex 2nd Gig, the creative team behind Paramount’s live-action movie have continually stressed that the 2017 tentpole will remain faithful to the source material.

The Hollywood adaptation of the sci-fi classic Ghost in the Shell will hit theatres on March 31, 2017. Executive producer Michael Costigan says that the upcoming live-action will be faithful to the manga. Although, producer Avi Arad says that they will pick and choose what elements they’ll include from the source manga or the previous TV and film adaptations.

In an interview for Collider.com, Arad sheds light on the movie’s plot:

“It involves Kuze. The Kuze story. The big thing we are doing here is that we’re not necessarily doing an origins backstory, but we are addressing her sense of self and resolving how she defines herself in terms of memories. That’s one of the main thrusts in the story. Inspired by that episode of Affection in Second Gig. It’s bits and pieces of those mixed together.”

In the blink-and-you’ll-miss-it clip, Johansson’s elite cyborg heroine delivers a sucker punch to an unsuspecting thug. Cloaked in some form of invisible technology, the leader of Section 9 truly looks the part as she begins to crack down on the city’s crime levels, and the fact that this teaser contains a nod to ‘Tokyo 11.13’ leads us to believe that the full trailer reveal is right around the corner. Most of the conversation that I’ve seen among fans regarding the upcoming live-action adaptation of Ghost in the Shell is the controversy over Scarlett Johansson’s casting in the lead role. I’ve already shared my thoughts on why that might be the case here. Regardless of how you feel about her casting, the movie is happening, and judging from the series of brief teasers that I’ve seen it looks like it’s going to be awesome!

For those of you who are fans of the manga and anime, you might be wondering what storylines from the source material director Rupert Sanders used for his movie. All we’ve had to go off of so far is the following brief plot summary:

With Scarlett Johansson’s name on the masthead, Ghost in the Shell is perhaps the most buzzworthy of Hollywood’s in-development manga adaptations. It’s also much further along than Alita: Battle Angel, Adam Wingard’s Death Note and the long-rumored Akira reboot, with a release date already pinned down for late March.

Paramount has dropped a fun surprise by releasing several Ghost in the Shell teasers earlier than expected. These 10 second shorts give us the very first footage, which includes a look at Scarlett Johansson and some of her co-workers. We also get the first official logo from the movie.

Since Dreamworks announced the live-action adaptation of Ghost in the Shell, the internet has been buzzing non-stop. A recent cast photo leak reveal an interesting group of actors. Casting controversies surrounding Avengers star, Scarlett Johansson has also been making the rounds.

A collection of low-quality photos has surfaced from director Rupert Sanders' live-action Ghost in the Shell film adaptation. The images feature the characters that make up Section 9, and they are in costume. Back in April, months after Paramount cast Scarlett Johansson in Ghost in the Shell, the studio released a first look image of the actress as The Major, known as Major Kusanaga in the original Japanese manga. Fans started to express their displeasure with this casting as production got under way, with Ghost in the Shell becoming part of the expanding conversation about "whitewashing" in Hollywood. As production continues, new photos have surfaced that not only reveal Scarlett Johansson in costume, but several of her co-stars.

The story centers on The Major, a special ops cyborg who leads a counter-cyberterrorist organization called Public Security Section 9 for Hanka Robotics. The Major and her team will set out to stop some of the most dangerous criminals in the world, led by the extremist The Laughing Man, played by Sam Riley. Scarlett Johansson may be the highest-grossing actress of all time, but the decision to enlist the Avengers star for Ghost in the Shell caused quite the stir back in April.

That’s because Masamune Shirow’s beloved manga series is viewed as a decidedly Japanese story, leading many to decree that the addition of Johansson was nothing more than whitewashing on Paramount’s part. According to producer Steven Paul, that’s simply not the case, as Ghost in the Shell boasts a “very international story.”

In an interview with BuzzFeed, Paul leapt to the defence of Paramount’s high-profile adaptation, revealing that the studio is “utilizing people from all over the world.”

Ever since the first image of Scarlett Johansson as Major Motoko Kusanagi in the upcoming “Ghost in the Shell” feature film was released, the live-action adaptation of Masamune Shirow’s manga series has received backlash with fans declaring another Hollywood whitewashing incident.

Now, Steve Paul, a producer on the film has spoken out about the criticism, telling BuzzFeed that he thinks fans will have a change of heart when they see the final product.

“I think everybody is going to end up being really happy with it,” he told the website. “They’re going to be very, very happy with it when they see what we’ve actually done with it, and I don’t think anybody’s going to be disappointed.”
