Sean Gunn may voice Weasel and G.I. Robot in the animated series Creature Commandos, but regarding live-action, DC fans are going to recognize him as the DC Universe's Maxwell Lord. Director James Gunn’s upcoming “Superman” (formerly “Superman: Legacy) will be packed with DC Comics deep cuts, among them Superman and Supergirl villain Maxwell Lord, played by Sean Gunn.

Maxwell Lord isn’t a particularly well known villain, but he’s shown up in a surprising number of DC Comics adaptations in recent years — Pedro Pascal previously played him in “Wonder Woman 1984,” and Peter Facinelli portrayed him early on in The CW’s “Supergirl.”

TheWrap caught up with Sean Gunn at FanExpo Chicago on Friday, and naturally had to find out how he’s approaching the character. Gunn told us that he isn’t referring back to those earlier portrayals.

“I can’t talk too much about it. I can say that my my brother James and I did discuss… what reference materials from the canon were relevant to to my process,” he said, adding that “I love doing my own music.

It was inevitable for Sean Gunn to be greatly involved in the Dcu, and now his new role in the new universe created by James Gunn and Peter Safran has been revealed.

Per Deadline, Gunn is set to play DC villain Maxwell Lord in the Dcu. As of now, it's not yet clear if Gunn's Maxwell Lord will debut in the upcoming film Superman: Legacy, but he will reportedly be referenced in the background to help set up future appearances. The Dcu will officially kick off in 2024 with the arrival of the animated series Creature Commandos on Max, and Gunn could potentially voice Maxwell if the character makes an appearance in the TV show. In any case, it would seem there are big plans for Gunn's Maxwell in the Dcu, but fans will have to stay tuned.

Exclusive: We understand that Guardians of the Galaxy alum Sean Gunn is set to take on the role of evil businessman Maxwell Lord in the new DC Universe that’s being overseen by James Gunn and Peter Safran.

The role was previously played by Pedro Pascal in the 2020 movie Wonder Woman 1984.

It’s not clear if Sean Gunn’s Maxwell Lord will make a cameo in brother Gunn’s Superman: Legacy which will go into production next year. The character, as I hear it, will be referenced in the background of Legacy but will appear in future DC projects. A similar motif will occur for other characters in the new DC Universe, the first phase which is named Gods and Monsters: Chapter One. Stay tuned.

He had runs on comics, that are legendary. Runs that inspired the next generation. Runs that reinvented the wheel. Runs that defined characters and still define them today across all media. Runs that included the creation of some of comics greatest and most loved characters. So as Keith pulls his chair up to the great drawing board in the sky we look back on the man behind this outstanding career.

Keith Giffen, the veteran comics author and artist who co-created characters such as DC’s Lobo and the Jamie Reyes version of the Blue Beetle as well as Marvel’s Rocket Raccoon, has died. He was 70.

Giffen’s family announced his death on Facebook Wednesday via a sardonic post pre-written by the comic book writer-artist: “I told them I was sick…Anything not to go to New York Comic Con, Thankx,’ adding “Bwah ha ha ha ha.”

His death was affirmed by longtime collaborator Paul Levitz. “The sad news is now official: Keith Giffen has gone off to create new worlds that are beyond our living reach,” Levitz wrote on Facebook. “Keith was probably the most fertile creative mind of our generation in comics. He had an infinite number of ideas, pouring constantly out.”

Giffen is best known for writing and drawing galaxy-spanning adventure book Legion of Super-Heroes in the 1980s and 1990s, at one point making the title one of DC’s top sellers. As Season 1 of My Adventures with Superman unfolded, fans were stunned to see how the series retooled some iconic DC villains. The likes of Silver Banshee and Heat Wave were made more technology-oriented. Not to mention, Doctor Ivo was retconned into being a Parasite with an Iron Man-like armor.

This helped give the series an anime energy. It led to the Suicide Squad trying to kill Jack Quaid's Clark Kent in the final arc, enhancing the intense, high-octane vibe. Thankfully, Superman's not just able to stave these goons off; he's also able to ward off the military and a Kryptonian invasion by the time the season ends. However, given the essence of the show and some dangling threads, there are other deadly villains that can easily fit the narrative at play.

Barbara Gordon, aka Batgirl, is a stronger hero than Batman because she accepts her trauma and uses it to become a better hero, even taking up the mantle of Green Lantern. In the two-issue series Jla: Created Equal, Barbara is chosen to explore space and given a Green Lantern ring. Unlike Batman, she is able to use the ring without issue. As the hero Oracle, Barbara helps and saves people on a level she couldn't as Batgirl. Her ability to accept and live with her trauma makes her a stronger hero than Batman.

The entire reason Batman became a superhero was because of the trauma of his parents' deaths, something he admits he'll never truly get over. But one other Bat-Family member proved she is a stronger hero by accepting her trauma and becoming a Green Lantern: Barbara Gordon, Aka the first Batgirl.

New rumors around Superman: Legacy emerge seemingly every day, and with the ongoing strikes causing delays in production, there are apt to be quite a few more before the movie itself finally hits screens. The latest is particularly interesting because it focuses on a location rather than a character. Bialya, a fictional nation in the DC Universe along the lines of Corto Maltese, is apparently playing a major role in the upcoming film. Though it has yet to be confirmed as of this writing, it opens up a Pandora's box of possibilities.

That includes a big connection to The Blue Beetle, whose new Dceu movie will presumably raise the character's profile. The character -- at least the original version of him -- has deep connections to Bialya. And while there's no guarantee that any version of the character will appear in Superman: Legacy, the link is too strong to simply ignore.

James Gunn is definitely looking to break some rules when it comes to Superman: Legacy. Casting the likes of Anthony Carrigan and Rachel Brosnahan strongly suggests a more playful side to the Man of Steel -- a sensible move that would set it apart from the darker vibes of the departing DC Extended Universe. That most likely extends to the villain as well, and now another rumor may hold a clue as to exactly who that might be.

According to a new rumor, the film will spend at least some of its time in Bialya, a fictional country ruled by one of several versions of Queen Bee. If the rumors are true, she makes an outstanding choice, giving Superman someone new to fight in a manner previous movie baddies haven't managed. Such a move is absolutely essential for Superman: Legacy to work.
