Can a certain sound, made by a particular instrument, sum up an entire era?

It seems unlikely, yet think about those opening notes of Harold Faltermeyer's "Axel F" from "Beverly Hills Cop" or Brad Fidel's theme for "The Terminator," and you're instantly transported back to the 1980s. Of course, electronic music existed long before that decade. Yet the synthesizer-as-primary-instrument score came to prominence during the '80s, in part due to changing tastes in music and culture, and in part due to the steady rise of independent films, who needed to save a few bucks by employing just one musician instead of dozens.

While the popularity of the synth-heavy score during the 1980s is easily understood, what's surprising and less clear is why this type of sound has lasted ever since, and why it's still so prevalent today. Sure, '80s nostalgia began early and has never really left our culture since.

Warner Bros. has made some changes to its release calendar. Among the movies receiving new release dates is Maggie Gyllenhaal's The Bride!, which features Christian Bale as Frankenstein's Monster.

Per The Hollywood Reporter, Warner Bros. has pushed The Bride! back almost six months, moving the monster movie out of 2025 completely and into the first quarter of 2026. Instead of Sept. 26, 2025, The Bride! will now open in theaters on March 6, 2026. The other five movies from the studio that saw their release dates change include Paul Thomas Anderson’s One Battle After Another, which is moving back from Aug. 8 into The Bride!'s old Sept. 16 release spot. Zach Cregger's hotly-anticipated Barbarian follow-up Weapons is moving up several months, from Jan. 11, 2026, to the now-open Aug. 8, 2025, spot, while the animated The Cat in the Hat movie and David Robert Mitchell’s Flowervale Street are now set to hit theaters on Feb. 27, 2026 and Aug.

A major summer release for Paul Thomas Anderson’s next feature was too good to be true. Warner Bros. has now delayed the film, his Vineland-inspired action/crime/comedy One Battle After Another, from an August 8, 2025 release to a September 26, 2025 bow, a similar timeframe that Francis Ford Coppola’s Megalopolis occupied last year.

According to The Wrap, the film will still receive an IMAX release, including select theaters with 70mm along with a special release on VistaVision, a format recently used by Brady Corbet’s The Brutalist. The shift will reportedly “give the studio more time to prepare VistaVision prints and projectors for the release.”

Warner Bros. is getting its ducks in a row before it presents its upcoming slate to theater owners at this year’s CinemaCon, which gets underway March 31 in Las Vegas.

Wednesday evening, the studio announced a number of high-profile changes to its release calendar, led by news that director Maggie Gyllenhaal‘s Frankenstein pic The Bride is relocating from Sept. 26, 2025, to March 6, 2026. The film stars Christian Bale opposite Jessie Buckley. The Bride has had a challenging postproduction period, according to sources, though others deny any challenges and note its post-process has nothing to do with the new date.

The studio says the movie is the sort of event film that will benefit from hitting theaters timed to the beginning of spring holidays and school breaks. This does not preclude the film from being an awards contender despite such an early release date.

Warner Bros. enacted some significant housekeeping around its film release schedule on Wednesday, including a new date for the highly anticipated Paul Thomas Anderson film starring Leonardo DiCaprio.

Now officially titled “One Battle After Another,” the Anderson project is shrouded in mystery but said to be an American crime thriller. Previously dated for Aug. 8, the film will now open nationwide on Sept. 26.

Insiders familiar with the movie said the minor push comes as the studio helps outfit U.S. movie theaters with VistaVision projection systems to accommodate their director’s vision. A move out of August to late September also squeaks “One Battle” out of the summer box office season and places it closer to the awards corridor, Anderson’s natural habitat.. Monroe is set to lead Universal Pictures of Colleen Hoover's best-selling novel, Reminders of Him. Sex. Paranoia. Betrayal. These are the are among the first words that come to mind when we talk about the cult horror hit, It Follows. A movie that serves as a refreshing splash of originality and imagination that has gone on to become a mainstay in the Blu-ray players of horror lovers everywhere. While it’s a movie that certainly receives its share of praise for being fresh with its concept and quite creative in its depiction of the movie’s antagonistic entity- it also doesn’t seem to get the analysis it deserves beyond those initial praises. While the freshness and high-quality storytelling are certainly not up for debate in my book- this movie is awesome- I must say that beyond all the sex, paranoia, and betrayal, there’s also a surprising layer of tenderness, friendship, and empowerment that carry it through the trending page and into the pop culture zeitgeist forever.

It Follows, David Robert Mitchell's unique take on the genre – and one of the best horror films of the 2010s – will stream very soon on Max. Lee Cronin's The Mummy: With a release date of April 17, 2026, we now have an official title for the latest horror film from Evil Dead Rise's Lee Cronin, who is is writing and directing the film, produced by Atomic Monster, Blumhouse and Doppelgängers, for New Line.

"This will be unlike any Mummy movie you ever laid eyeballs on before. I'm digging deep into the earth to raise something very ancient and very frightening," said writer/director Lee Cronin.

As previously announced, Atomic Monster and Blumhouse are co-financing the film. James Wan, Jason Blum and John Keville are producers on the film. Michael Clear, Judson Scott and Macdara Kelleher are executive producers. Alayna Glasthal is the executive overseeing the project for Atomic Monster.

Neon is ready to work with Longlegs star Maika Monroe again. The distributor behind some of 2024's most acclaimed horror movies, like the aforementioned serial killer thriller, Immaculate, and Cuckoo, has acquired the North American rights to the upcoming horror film Brides, per The Hollywood Reporter.

Monroe will star in the movie, directed by Chloe Okuno, with whom Monroe previously worked for the film Watcher. In addition to Longlegs and Brides, Neon is co-producing and distributing They Follow, the sequel to the David Robert Mitchell-directed film It Follows that Monroe also starred in.

Pre-production for Brides is already underway, with filming starting in March 2025. Monroe will be plenty busy between this film and They Follow, which is also set to shoot next year.

Neon has picked up the North American rights to Chloe Okuno’s horror pic Brides, which will star Maika Monroe and is set to shoot in March 2025.

The project marks the third collaboration between Neon and Monroe after Osgood Perkins’ Longlegs and the upcoming sequel They Follow, the follow-up to David Robert Mitchell’s It Follows. Pre-production for Brides is now underway, and Neon plans to release the movie in theaters.

Longlegs made $75 million at the box office, making it the highest-grossing indie film of the year and a high point for Neon, Tom Quinn’s Oscar-winning specialty production and distribution outfit also home to Parasite.

Longlegs saw Nicholas Cage play an elusive serial killer being tracked by FBI Agent Lee Harker (Monroe) and who was so transformed for the film, he was almost unrecognizable. Brides will be produced by Anthony Bregman and Stefanie Azpiazu through Likely Story.

The outrageous premise finds the duo leading a story based on an actual sting involving agents who posed as a couple to infiltrate global crime enterprises. Their work culminates in a staged wedding in New Jersey; only when their crime boss guests checked in for their seat assignments were they systematically and secretly carted off by authorities before the next party could be tipped off.

The untitled action comedy shuffles the original events, making the story about mismatched FBI partners with wildly different styles forced to cohabitate and tolerate each other’s faults for the good of the case. Oh, and the film is arriving shrouded in all sorts of mystery too, which always adds to the sense of intrigue.

Prepare to be intrigued for longer however, as World Of Reel is reporting that Warner Bros has pushed the film into March of 2026, a delay of 10 months.

Up next from director David Robert Mitchell (It Follows) is a mysterious genre movie for J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot that’s titled Flowervale Street, and the IMAX release date had originally been set for May 16, 2025. This week, however, the film has been bumped nearly a year.

Flowervale Street will now arrive in theaters – and IMAX – on March 13, 2026.

That original May 2025 release date has been taken over by Final Destination: Bloodlines.

The deeply mysterious Flowervale Street has been described as an IMAX “thrill ride,” and recent rumors have suggested it might involve dinosaurs… and it’s possibly set in the 1980s.

Mitchell directs from his own original script and is producing alongside J.J. Abrams and Hannah Minghella for Bad Robot, Jackson Pictures’ Matt Jackson, and Tommy Harper.

Last year, Final Destination 6 (which is going by the title Final Destination: Bloodlines) finally, after years of development and a thirteen year gap between sequels, made its way through production. Franchise producer Craig Perry previously let it be known that the film was aiming for a theatrical release in 2025 – in time to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the release of the original film. It will even be on IMAX screens! Now, Deadline has confirmed that Final Destination: Bloodlines is set to reach theatres on May 16, 2025. As of right now, it’s the only major studio film scheduled to get a wide theatrical release on that date.

This long-awaited sequel is coming our way from Warner Bros. The studio also announced that they’ll be bringing Legendary Entertainment’s live action hybrid road movie Animal Friends to theatres on October 10, 2025. Unfortunately, Final Destination: Bloodlines could only secure its May release date because Warner Bros.

Guy Busick and Lori Evans Taylor are writing the screenplay from a story by Jon Watts based on characters created by Jeffrey Reddick. Producers are Watts, Dianne McGunigle, Craig Perry and Sheila Hanahan Taylor. Cast for the new Final Destination is Brec Bassinger, Teo Briones, Richard Harmon, Max Lloyd Jones, Owen Patrick Joyner, Kaitlyn Santa Juana, Rya Kihlstedt, Tinpo Lee, Anna Lore, Gabrielle Rose, April Amber Telek and Alex Zahara.

Warner Bros. shuffled its film release schedule, planting “Final Destination: Bloodlines” on the calendar in summer and delaying the J.J. Abrams-backed mystery thriller “Flowervale Street” to 2026.

“Final Destination 6” will be released on May 16, 2025. It’s taking over the slot previously occupied by “Flowervale Street,” which was set for mid May but has been pushed nearly a year to March 13, 2026. “Final Destination: Bloodlines” is the only major studio release on that date, but it will debut two weeks after Disney’s Marvel adventure “Thunderbolts” (May 2) and the week prior to Paramount’s “Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning” and Disney’s live-action “Lilo & Stitch” (May 23).

The studio also acquired “Animal Friends,” a live-action/ CGI hybrid road trip adventure starring Ryan Reynolds, Jason Momoa, Aubrey Plaza and TikToker Addison Rae, and pushed its release date back to Oct. 10. Sony was previously set to release the film in August before Warner Bros.

Gordon-Levitt and T-Street are well-acquainted after the studio produced Johnson’s 2005 crime thriller Brick, starring Gordon-Levitt as a teenager who pushes into a crime ring after his girlfriend disappears.

No word on plot details yet, but we hear Gordon-Levitt wrote the script with Kieran Fitzgerald, who previously co-wrote his 2016 Oliver Stone movie Snowden. Both share ‘story by’ credit with Natasha Lyonne, the star of Johnson’s hit human-lie-detector series Poker Face for Peacock.

The project is the latest in a long line of collaborations for Gordon-Levitt, Johnson, and T-Street. Gordon-Levitt’s friendship and creative partnership with Johnson dates back to the latter’s 2005 directorial debut Brick, a high school neo-noir starring Gordon-Levitt, which is now a cult classic. Subsequently, Gordon-Levitt went on to star as a younger version of Bruce Willis in Johnson’s sci-fi actioner Looper, later guest starring on Poker Face.

Later on, filmmakers like Brian De Palma (Blow Out), the Coen Brothers (No Country for Old Men), Steven Soderbergh (Kimi), David Robert Mitchell (Under the Silver Lake), and Sriram Raghavan (Andhadhun) furthered this particular subgenre of crime thrillers while making some kind of relevant commentary on the state of modern society.

Christopher Nolan’s next film is getting even more star-studded. Anne Hathaway and Zendaya are set to join the cast of Nolan’s next movie set at Universal, IndieWire has confirmed.

Tom Holland and Matt Damon are already set to lead the film, which is untitled and has plot details so far kept tightly under wraps. The film is, however, meant to arrive in theaters on July 17, 2026 in IMAX.

Universal had no comment on the casting.

This is set to be Nolan’s 13th feature and his second with Universal after he won Best Picture with “Oppenheimer.” The hope is that the film will begin shooting in early 2025. Nolan is writing, directing, and producing, and his partner Emma Thomas is also producing via their Syncopy banner.
