Can a certain sound, made by a particular instrument, sum up an entire era?
It seems unlikely, yet think about those opening notes of Harold Faltermeyer's "Axel F" from "Beverly Hills Cop" or Brad Fidel's theme for "The Terminator," and you're instantly transported back to the 1980s. Of course, electronic music existed long before that decade. Yet the synthesizer-as-primary-instrument score came to prominence during the '80s, in part due to changing tastes in music and culture, and in part due to the steady rise of independent films, who needed to save a few bucks by employing just one musician instead of dozens.
While the popularity of the synth-heavy score during the 1980s is easily understood, what's surprising and less clear is why this type of sound has lasted ever since, and why it's still so prevalent today. Sure, '80s nostalgia began early and has never really left our culture since.

Update: the first teaser has arrived ahead of a full trailer next week. See it and find the original story below.
A major summer release for Paul Thomas Anderson’s next feature was too good to be true. Warner Bros. has now delayed the film, his Vineland-inspired action/crime/comedy One Battle After Another, from an August 8, 2025 release to a September 26, 2025 bow, a similar timeframe that Francis Ford Coppola’s Megalopolis occupied last year.
According to The Wrap, the film will still receive an IMAX release, including select theaters with 70mm along with a special release on VistaVision, a format recently used by Brady Corbet’s The Brutalist. The shift will reportedly “give the studio more time to prepare VistaVision prints and projectors for the release.”

Warner Bros. has shifted its upcoming release rescheduling, resulting in new dates for three highly-anticipated genre titles.
Weapons, Zach Cregger‘s follow-up to Barbarian, has been bumped up to August 8, 2025. Previously scheduled for January 16 of next year, the summer release shows the studio’s confidence in the project.
Josh Brolin, Julia Garner, Alden Ehrenreich, Benedict Wong, Austin Abrams, Amy Madigan, and June Diane Raphael star in the horror epic about a small community after a group of kids mysteriously disappear overnight.
Maggie Gyllenhaal’s The Bride!, originally due out on September 26, 2025, has been pushed to March 6, 2026; a time frame that WB has found success with big genre projects.
Inspired by Bride of Frankenstein, the monster movie stars Jessie Buckley, Christian Bale, Penélope Cruz, Peter Sarsgaard, and Annette Bening.
Flowervale Street, from It Follows writer-director David Robert Mitchell, has moved from March 13, 2026 to August 14, 2026 in an effort to take advantage of late-summer audiences.

The release date for an upcoming Anne Hathaway science-fiction movie has been delayed by five months. For more than two decades, Hathaway has been a leading star in Hollywood. She first gained recognition for her role as Mia Thermopolis in 2001's The Princess Diaries, and she reprised the character three years later in The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement. Her stardom continued to expand with leading roles in Ella Enchanted, The Devil Wears Prada, and Rachel Getting Married.
Several of Hathaway's best movies came in the following decade, particularly her Academy Award-winning performance as Fantine in Les Misérables and as Dr. Amelia Brand in Christopher Nolan's science-fiction epic Interstellar. More recently, Hathaway played art gallery owner Solène Marchand in The Idea of You, which sees her character in a romantic relationship with a popstar. Warner Bros. is getting its ducks in a row before it presents its upcoming slate to theater owners at this year’s CinemaCon, which gets underway March 31 in Las Vegas.
Wednesday evening, the studio announced a number of high-profile changes to its release calendar, led by news that director Maggie Gyllenhaal‘s Frankenstein pic The Bride is relocating from Sept. 26, 2025, to March 6, 2026. The film stars Christian Bale opposite Jessie Buckley. The Bride has had a challenging postproduction period, according to sources, though others deny any challenges and note its post-process has nothing to do with the new date.
The studio says the movie is the sort of event film that will benefit from hitting theaters timed to the beginning of spring holidays and school breaks. This does not preclude the film from being an awards contender despite such an early release date.

Warner Bros has just made some razor-sharp release-date changes ahead of CinemaCon, ones that could potentially keep the Burbank, CA lot more toward the black this year than in the red.
In a year when there were four $100 million-plus auteur-driven movies — one of which, Bong Joon Ho’s Mickey 17, recently misfired — Warners Bros distribution has taken the pressure off the studios’ schedule in that regard, and even placed a potential tentpole into the year: Zach Cregger’s anticipated genre movie Weapons on August 8.
Cregger’s next movie after Barbarian was previously scheduled for MLK weekend 2026, on January 16. What kept Warners from moving the pic starring Josh Brolin, Julia Garner and Alden Ehrenreich was that the theatrical release was tied to Imax screens — can’t give up those auditoriums. In fact, what made all of the release-date changes feasible for Warners was that each was tied to Imax bookings. As...

Warner Bros. enacted some significant housekeeping around its film release schedule on Wednesday, including a new date for the highly anticipated Paul Thomas Anderson film starring Leonardo DiCaprio.
Now officially titled “One Battle After Another,” the Anderson project is shrouded in mystery but said to be an American crime thriller. Previously dated for Aug. 8, the film will now open nationwide on Sept. 26.
Insiders familiar with the movie said the minor push comes as the studio helps outfit U.S. movie theaters with VistaVision projection systems to accommodate their director’s vision. A move out of August to late September also squeaks “One Battle” out of the summer box office season and places it closer to the awards corridor, Anderson’s natural habitat.. Warner Bros has confirmed that its Paul Thomas Anderson feature starring Leonardo DiCaprio is called One Battle After Another and pushed it from August onto September 26, bouncing Maggie Gyllenhaal’s The Bride! into March 2026.
This is a better awards season slot than the initial August 8 date, were the studio minded to go down that path and plan to capitalise on strong word of mouth from fall festivals. They have been an occasional entry point for the auteur: of his last five films, Inherent Vice debuted at New York Film Festival in 2014 and before that The Master premiered in Venice in 2012.

Maika Monroe, best known for critically lauded portrayals in horror and thrillers, will take a stab at romance. Monroe is set to lead Universal Pictures of Colleen Hoover's best-selling novel, Reminders of Him. This marks a new venture for Monroe, who has solidified her Scream Queen status with memorable performances in films like 2014's The Guest and It Follows, as well as more recent hits like Watcher and last year's Longlegs, which became the highest-grossing independent film of the year.
The screen adaptation of Reminders of Him, slated for a Valentine's Day weekend 2026 release, will be directed by Vanessa Caswill, who helmed Netflix's Love at First Sight. The director of Under The Shadow, Avak Anvari, has offered a brief update on his long-awaited monster movie sequel, Clovefield 2.
Since Matt Reeves’ Cloverfield arrived in a blitz of viral marketing back in 2008, a couple of films have followed bearing the same name, existing in the same universe.
The 2016 sci-fi thriller 10 Cloverfield Lane was retrofitted into becoming a Cloverfield film in post-production, while Paramount lost confidence in The Cloverfield Paradox and sold it to Netflix instead of releasing it in cinemas. There’s also talk early last year that David Robert Mitchell’s upcoming (and very secretive) Flowervale Street might be a secret Cloverfield movie, though that’s pure conjecture on our part.
Still, back in 2021, we were told that a direct sequel to Cloverfield was coming. Paramount clearly still has interest in more Cloverfield movies and hired Joe Barton to script the movie, with JJ Abrams producing. Anvak Anvari,...

There's no one in our modern film landscape like Sydney Sweeney. In a culture where looks tend to dominate your level of success, Sweeney has devoured stereotypes -- because let's face it, she's stunning -- and ultimately has made a name for herself with the quality of her work both on and offscreen. Though she did her first TV and film stints way back in 2009, her career didn't truly start to pick up until nearly a decade later in 2018. Since then, she has completely taken the industry by storm as a performer and, even more recently, as a dedicated producer.
Sweeney doesn't have a ton of noteworthy credits to her name at this point in her career, but there's no denying she's already done some extremely memorable top-notch work, and there's even more in the pipeline with her upcoming turn as boxer Christy Martin in an upcoming biopic. From dramas to rom-coms,...

In 2014, It Follows gained notoriety among horror fans and critics for its suspense and impressive visuals. Over a decade later, It Follows has retained the praise and admiration of an audience that can be divisive and finicky about the offerings they’re presented with. Director David Robert Mitchell tapped into the vein of many standard slasher and horror tropes and, in many ways, went completely against them in a film that thrives on suspense, atmosphere, remarkable cinematography, and a commentary on sexual promiscuity that hadn't been seen since Shivers by David Cronenberg.
It Follows can almost be seen as the definitive anti-slasher film of the modern era. Sacrificing visceral effects and sensationalized death in favor of connecting the audience to the characters through dissonance and reinforcing the more subtle horror of what one doesn’t see. The slasher genre, which was rather basic and took delight in punishing teenagers for promiscuity and drug use,...

A road trip among childhood friends turns into a long drive through hell — or a glaring metaphor for the existential dread of post-college life — in director Alexander Ullom’s tense feature debut, It Ends.
Making the most out of one location, one vehicle and four actors, the film milks as much as it can out of a far-fetched scenario that keeps the suspense level relatively high, although it doesn’t amount to much once the gas runs out.
More conceptual horror than gory nail-biter, It Ends follows in the footsteps of other “It”-titled indie screamers like David Robert Mitchell’s It Follows and Trey Edward Shults’ It Comes at Night — two movies where an unexplained phenomenon transforms our darkest inner fears into deadly abstract threats. Here, the threat is so outlandish that it’s not easy to wrap your head around it, which is why Ullom deserves credit for...

My Old Ass was just as much a coming-of-age for Maisy Stella as it was for her character.
Stella hadn’t acted since the musical drama Nashville wrapped when she was 14 years old, and while she continued to put herself on tape, the universe kept the then-teenager on the sidelines until Megan Park’s comedy-drama came along at 18. In hindsight, Stella realizes how valuable it was for her to enjoy those four years of being a teenage student. After all, she’d had a whirlwind childhood alongside her older sister, Lennon. Together, they not only co-starred on Nashville, but they also performed as a country music duo, highlighted by a direct ode to Taylor Swift at the 2013 CMA Awards. (Stella would also later find out that her 7-year-old self’s cover of Missy Higgins’ “Secret” was an influence on a young Billie Eilish.)

Sex. Paranoia. Betrayal. These are the are among the first words that come to mind when we talk about the cult horror hit, It Follows. A movie that serves as a refreshing splash of originality and imagination that has gone on to become a mainstay in the Blu-ray players of horror lovers everywhere. While it’s a movie that certainly receives its share of praise for being fresh with its concept and quite creative in its depiction of the movie’s antagonistic entity- it also doesn’t seem to get the analysis it deserves beyond those initial praises. While the freshness and high-quality storytelling are certainly not up for debate in my book- this movie is awesome- I must say that beyond all the sex, paranoia, and betrayal, there’s also a surprising layer of tenderness, friendship, and empowerment that carry it through the trending page and into the pop culture zeitgeist forever.

Horror movies in any era reflect people's collective anxieties. Sometimes, the source of the horror - be it a psycho killer in a slasher or a mythical monster in a supernatural horror film - is a metaphorical stand-in for what causes people to feel anxious, and sometimes it's the characters' response to danger and horror that represents the source of anxiety in people. So, for example, among the best horror movies of the 2020s is The Host, which is premised on the kind of social isolation that the world was forced into during the Covid-19 pandemic.
The development of the discourse on body politics over the past years prompted director Coralie Fargeat to make The Substance, the highly successful horror movie starring Demi Moore. Neon is ready to work with Longlegs star Maika Monroe again. The distributor behind some of 2024's most acclaimed horror movies, like the aforementioned serial killer thriller, Immaculate, and Cuckoo, has acquired the North American rights to the upcoming horror film Brides, per The Hollywood Reporter.
Monroe will star in the movie, directed by Chloe Okuno, with whom Monroe previously worked for the film Watcher. In addition to Longlegs and Brides, Neon is co-producing and distributing They Follow, the sequel to the David Robert Mitchell-directed film It Follows that Monroe also starred in.
Pre-production for Brides is already underway, with filming starting in March 2025. Monroe will be plenty busy between this film and They Follow, which is also set to shoot next year.
In honor of the acquisition, Neon shared a photo of the script's title page via the X platform (formerly Twitter) earlier today. Fittingly, the word Brides...

Neon has picked up the North American rights to Chloe Okuno’s horror pic Brides, which will star Maika Monroe and is set to shoot in March 2025.
The project marks the third collaboration between Neon and Monroe after Osgood Perkins’ Longlegs and the upcoming sequel They Follow, the follow-up to David Robert Mitchell’s It Follows. Pre-production for Brides is now underway, and Neon plans to release the movie in theaters.
Longlegs made $75 million at the box office, making it the highest-grossing indie film of the year and a high point for Neon, Tom Quinn’s Oscar-winning specialty production and distribution outfit also home to Parasite.
Longlegs saw Nicholas Cage play an elusive serial killer being tracked by FBI Agent Lee Harker (Monroe) and who was so transformed for the film, he was almost unrecognizable. Brides will be produced by Anthony Bregman and Stefanie Azpiazu through Likely Story.

Zosia Mamet comes from a long lineage of folks making names for themselves in some capacity in the entertainment field. As one can probably tell from her last name, she's the daughter of playwright and screenwriter David Mamet, who's behind such works as "Glengarry Glen Ross" and the 1997 political satire "Wag the Dog." Mamet's mother, Lindsay Crouse, is an actor, while her grandfather on that side of the family is Russel Crouse, another playwright.
It almost seems like Mamet was destined for big things with that lineage, and she's certainly made a name for herself over the past decade of consistent work. From dramas to comedies (but mostly comedies), she's done it all, especially after breaking out with her role of Shoshanna Shapiro on "Girls."
These are the best Mamet movies and TV shows yet, but don't worry. Despite providing one of the most ridiculous moments in "Madame Web," her...

Anne Hathaway and Dave Bautista are leaping into an untitled action comedy from Banshee and The Adam Project writer Jonathan Tropper for Amazon MGM Studios and Agbo. The outrageous premise finds the duo leading a story based on an actual sting involving agents who posed as a couple to infiltrate global crime enterprises. Their work culminates in a staged wedding in New Jersey; only when their crime boss guests checked in for their seat assignments were they systematically and secretly carted off by authorities before the next party could be tipped off.
The untitled action comedy shuffles the original events, making the story about mismatched FBI partners with wildly different styles forced to cohabitate and tolerate each other’s faults for the good of the case. At first, neither agent can stand the other, but by the operation’s end, they learn to respect one another. Awwww!
Anne Hathaway has two films in post-production.

Jim Carrey addresses his potential return as the Grinch if a sequel to How The Grinch Stole Christmas gets made. Released in 2000 and based on the 1957 Dr. Seuss book of the same name, the Ron Howard movie follows Carrey's eponymous character as he plans to ruin Christmas for the citizens of Whoville. The movie was a box office success but The Grinch 2 never materialized, though false rumors did emerge in 2023 about a follow-up with Carrey back as The Grinch.
During a recent interview with ComicBook.com, Carrey brings up the possibility of playing the Grinch once more, revealing that he would consider returning. According to the actor, CGI and motion capture would have to be used over traditional makeup and prosthetics, which made filming the 2000 film a challenge. Check out Carrey's comment below:

Michael Mann has been chatting about what he want to do once he’s finished making Heat 2 – and it’s a Vietnam movie.
Will Heat 2 happen? The director of 1995’s Heat, Michael Mann, is behind the sequel, the story (should it follow his 2022 novel) is a worthy continuation of the original tale, and there’s no shortage of acting talent reportedly being lined up to take over the roles previously played by the likes of Al Pacino and Robert De Niro.
Mann has cast just a little bit of doubt on the project recently, however, stating that “nothing’s definitely going [forward] because the sky may fall. But Heat 2 is at Warner Bros. I’m writing the screenplay for them, and hopefully, we will go forward as soon as possible.”

It Follows director David Robert Mitchell’s highly anticipated Flowervale Street is reportedly delayed a year by Warner Bros to 2026.
David Robert Green’s mysterious Flowervale Street has been highly anticipated for some time and with good reason. Fans of It Follows will have to wait even longer for writer-director David Robert Mitchell's mysterious new film from producer J.J. Abrams and Bad Robot, Bloody Disgusting reports. The film — currently titled Flowervale Street — was originally scheduled for an IMAX release on May 16, 2025, but has now been bumped to March 13, 2026, almost an entire year later. The original premiere date has instead been given to Final Destination: Bloodlines. No reason for the switch has been given at this time.
Very little is known about Flowervale Street. It's been described as an IMAX "thrill ride" and may or may not involve dinosaurs. It's also rumored to be set in the 1980s, and some speculate it's set in the Cloverfield universe. Anne Hathaway, Ewan McGregor, Maisy Stella, and Christian Convery are set to star. Other producers include Hannah Minghella for Bad Robot, Jackson Pictures’ Matt Jackson, and Tommy Harper.

The studio has dated “Final Destination: Bloodlines” for May 16, 2025 and delayed two high-profile titles – live-action/animated “Animal Friends” is going from August 15, 2025 (when Sony was releasing it) to October 10, 2025, while “Flowervale Street” from writer/director David Robert Mitchell is getting pushed from May 16, 2025, all the way to March 13, 2026. Last year, Final Destination 6 (which is going by the title Final Destination: Bloodlines) finally, after years of development and a thirteen year gap between sequels, made its way through production. Franchise producer Craig Perry previously let it be known that the film was aiming for a theatrical release in 2025 – in time to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the release of the original film. It will even be on IMAX screens! Now, Deadline has confirmed that Final Destination: Bloodlines is set to reach theatres on May 16, 2025. As of right now, it’s the only major studio film scheduled to get a wide theatrical release on that date.
This long-awaited sequel is coming our way from Warner Bros. The studio also announced that they’ll be bringing Legendary Entertainment’s live action hybrid road movie Animal Friends to theatres on October 10, 2025. Unfortunately, Final Destination: Bloodlines could only secure its May release date because Warner Bros.

Warner Bros. shuffled its film release schedule, planting “Final Destination: Bloodlines” on the calendar in summer and delaying the J.J. Abrams-backed mystery thriller “Flowervale Street” to 2026.
“Final Destination 6” will be released on May 16, 2025. It’s taking over the slot previously occupied by “Flowervale Street,” which was set for mid May but has been pushed nearly a year to March 13, 2026. “Final Destination: Bloodlines” is the only major studio release on that date, but it will debut two weeks after Disney’s Marvel adventure “Thunderbolts” (May 2) and the week prior to Paramount’s “Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning” and Disney’s live-action “Lilo & Stitch” (May 23).
The studio also acquired “Animal Friends,” a live-action/ CGI hybrid road trip adventure starring Ryan Reynolds, Jason Momoa, Aubrey Plaza and TikToker Addison Rae, and pushed its release date back to Oct. 10. Sony was previously set to release the film in August before Warner Bros.

Artificial intelligence is one of the most controversial topics in the tech market today. Whether it leads to medical industry advancements, art generated from stolen assets, or accessibility for the differently-abled, AI continues to grow exponentially with no signs of stopping. John Connor warned us, but did we listen? No, we did not. Contrastly to the fear-mongering above, Joseph Gordon-Levitt is partnering with Rian Johnson and Ram Bergman’s T-Street Productions for an AI thriller starring Anne Hathaway. Gordon-Levitt directs the untitled project from a script he wrote with Kieran Fitzgerald, who co-wrote Oliver Stone’s 2016 biographical thriller Snowden.
Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Kieran Fitzgerald share a ‘story by’ credit with Natasha Lyonne, who stars as Charlie, the lie-detecting investigator, in Johnson’s Peacock series Poker Face. Gordon-Levitt and T-Street are well-acquainted after the studio produced Johnson’s 2005 crime thriller Brick, starring Gordon-Levitt as a teenager who pushes into a crime ring after his girlfriend disappears.

Exclusive: Here’s a hot package coming together quickly: Joseph Gordon-Levitt is set to direct an untitled AI thriller for T-Street Productions, the production company of Rian Johnson & Ram Bergman, with Anne Hathaway to star, sources tell Deadline.
No word on plot details yet, but we hear Gordon-Levitt wrote the script with Kieran Fitzgerald, who previously co-wrote his 2016 Oliver Stone movie Snowden. Both share ‘story by’ credit with Natasha Lyonne, the star of Johnson’s hit human-lie-detector series Poker Face for Peacock.
The project is the latest in a long line of collaborations for Gordon-Levitt, Johnson, and T-Street. Gordon-Levitt’s friendship and creative partnership with Johnson dates back to the latter’s 2005 directorial debut Brick, a high school neo-noir starring Gordon-Levitt, which is now a cult classic. Subsequently, Gordon-Levitt went on to star as a younger version of Bruce Willis in Johnson’s sci-fi actioner Looper, later guest starring on Poker Face.

Alfred Hitchcock is, as the kids would say, the G.O.A.T. when it comes to crime thrillers. And I love how so many of his protagonists unknowingly find themselves in the middle of a mystery, but, over the course of the film, prove that they were probably the right person to end up at the wrong place at the wrong time. Jeff solved a murder in Rear Window, Ben and Jo unearthed a political crime in The Man Who Knew Too Much, and Roger Thornhill shed light on a deadly game of spies in North by Northwest. Later on, filmmakers like Brian De Palma (Blow Out), the Coen Brothers (No Country for Old Men), Steven Soderbergh (Kimi), David Robert Mitchell (Under the Silver Lake), and Sriram Raghavan (Andhadhun) furthered this particular subgenre of crime thrillers while making some kind of relevant commentary on the state of modern society.

Here’s It Follows Ending Explanation ( Photo Credit – YouTube )
David Robert Mitchell’s It Follows is one of those horror gems that will creep under your skin, so stay there. The story follows a monstrous curse passed along through intimate encounters. It Follows is somewhat similar to The Thing but with an eerie. What makes It Follows incredibly haunting is its open-ended finale. Like Carpenter’s classic, the ending doesn’t tell the viewers if the nightmare is over. Is the creature gone or lurking somewhere, waiting for the next movie? Of course, the suspense is killing the audience as it has left you guessing long after the credits roll.
What Happens In It Follows’ Ending?

Nolan is writing and directing the movie, which is set for a theatrical and Imax release on July 17, 2026. Plot details are currently under wraps. Universal had no comment on the casting.
It’s a reunion for Hathaway and Nolan, who previously collaborated on the 2014 space epic “Interstellar” and 2012’s “The Dark Knight Rises.” Earlier this year, Hathaway expressed gratitude for Nolan, who cast her in “Interstellar” amidst a wave of online hate following her Oscar win for “Les Misérables.” “A lot of people wouldn’t give me roles because they were so concerned about how toxic my identity had become online,” Hathaway told Vanity Fair. “I had an angel in Christopher Nolan, who did not care about that and gave me one of the most beautiful roles...

Kyra Sedgwick and Kevin Bacon are taking the title of their next film to heart. They’re set to direct the horror-comedy project “Family Movie” and star alongside their children, Travis and Sosie Bacon.
The foursome will produce for Mixed Breed Films alongside Norman Golightly at Dark Castle Entertainment. Neon International will represent the foreign rights and introduce it at AFM this week while CAA Media Finance will represent the U.S. rights.
The film, based on a screenplay by Dan Beers (“Premature”), follows an eclectic but tight-knit family of filmmakers who suddenly find themselves in a real-life horror movie when a body turns up on the set of their latest low-budget slasher. As the production spirals comically out of control, they realize the only solution to keep filming is to cover up the murder, by any means necessary.
