When one door closes, a new one opens, at least that’s the case on Apple TV+ these days. A mere week after saying goodbye to the most recent seasons of critically acclaimed series “Slow Horses,” “Bad Monkey,” and “Pachinko,” the streaming service is welcoming the return of its Emmy-nominated comedy “Shrinking.”
In Season 2, the unique comedy about a recently widowed therapist (co-creator and Emmy nominee Jason Segel) who abandons traditional methods in favor of being brutally honest with his patients thoughtfully expands upon its foundation. The new season — the first two episodes of which are currently streaming on Apple TV+ — finds Segel’s Jimmy and his colleagues, Gaby (Emmy nominee Jessica Williams) and Paul (Oscar nominee Harrison Ford), digging deeper into their own issues, including the latter’s Parkinson’s diagnosis. With more laughs and a couple of new faces thrown into the mix, including Emmy winner and series co-creator Brett Goldstein,...

It’s party time at Castle O’Hara in the 80s drama’s third episode. Here’s our Rivals episode 3 review.
Order a truckload of mistletoe and baste up the turkey, it’s a Christmas episode! This being Rivals, of course, that means opening with a bit of Rupert roleplay in a Santa suit and immediately skipping forward to New Year’s Eve – a celebration much more conducive to snogging strangers and quaffing absurd amounts of champagne. Maud O’Hara is hosting a party and, much to Declan’s irritation, she’s invited everyone even tangentially related to the plot so far (and a camel). Oops!
In what’s quickly becoming a habit, poor Taggie has been put on chef/serving staff/cloakroom attendant duty. Quite how she’s made the step up from last episode’s twelve-person dinner party to a star-studded knees-up big enough to attract a member of...

Taggie starts her own catering business and Declan tears up the journalism rulebook. Here’s our Rivals episode 2 review.
Two episodes into Disney+’s new 80s erotic drama, I’m already regretting not starting a bonking map. Picking up on an interesting vibe between Tony and producing hotshot Cameron Crowe, I realised with a start I’d completely forgotten the Don Draper-esque revelation concluding episode one. There are just too many affairs going on to keep up.
Still, it would be wrong to say Rivals is all about the hanky panky. In a rather thrilling opening to the second episode, we learn this one is about, among other things, journalism.
Declan O’Hara, whose Corinium-produced chat show is celebrating its format-smashing first episode, is a maverick. He’s got no time for your broadcasting rules. He’ll wear horrible mustard yellow socks for the premiere. He’ll bring up his...

The great and good of British telly romp their way through a deliciously entertaining tale of sexy nonsense. Here’s our Rivals episode 1 review.
A decade or so after the on-demand revolution, the streaming industry has finally eaten its own tail. Rivals is the closest thing to a terrestrial TV drama we’ve seen in years. After years of experimentation, talent-pilfering and moves to make streaming the new Hollywood, Disney+ has settled on remaking Showtime’s The Tudors in the 80s.
Based on Jilly Cooper’s 1988 erotic novel of the same name, the show follows the scheming, scandal and sex-lives of the poshest people you’ve ever seen as they politicise their way around 80s commercial TV juggernaut, Corinium – and the sexy, venom-tipped rivalry at its centre.
David Tennant’s new money oik, Lord Tony Baddingham, has built his media empire from the ground up, and therefore has a hereditary wealth-shaped chip on his shoulder.

While many shows embrace the paperback melodrama, few can fully explore these themes while touching the larger discourse. Yet the 2020s have seen a spark in this subgenre, with The White Lotus and Succession successfully marrying drama, business, and sex to perfection. Rivals – a new British series based on the Jilly Cooper novel of the same name – tries to thread the needle. While stars David Tennant, Alex Hassell, and Aidan Turner all shine, the women often feel underserved. It’s a frustrating development, in part because the series makes a point to tell us how women are ignored and undermined outside their relationships with men.

“You will find you bounce from emotion to emotion to emotion to emotion,” Victoria Smurfit promises of Rivals. The series, based on Dame Jilly Cooper’s novel, is full of romantic entanglements, dastardly deals, sex, and wit, set in 1980s England and against the backdrop of the ruthless world of independent television. The adaptation with an “unputdownable” script, according to Claire Rushbrook (Lady Monica Baddingham) has both similarities and differences to the book, says Emily Atack (who plays Sarah Stratton). The central rivalry is that between former showjumper Rupert Campbell-Black (Alex Hassell) and television magnate Lord Tony Baddingham (David Tennant). But that complicated dynamic—watch Tennant and Hassell discuss it and their characters in Part 1 of our preview here—is just one of many, and below, the cast previews what to expect. Plus, watch the fun video above for more, including the stars’ thoughts on whether their characters need power...

Rivals begins with a climax. Rupert Campbell-Black (Alex Hassell) is bonking in the toilet of a Concorde that goes supersonic just as he orgasms. A champagne bottle pops and all the passengers cheer as they eat prawn cocktails and chain-smoke to the sound of Robert Palmer’s ‘Addicted To Love’. In case it wasn’t yet clear, it’s the 1980s, and everyone’s horny as hell. But in this adaptation of Jilly Cooper’s novel, there’s tension of another kind too, courtesy of that titular feud: a silly yet dangerous rivalry between two posturing men with too much money at their disposal.
Cooper’s hugely successful Rutshire Chronicles were addictive and scandalous in equal measure for multiple generations of women and queer men, who found a riveting escape in her stories of romance and betrayal. Thankfully, none of that absurdity has been lost in translation,...

At the center of the steamy Hulu series based on Dame Jilly Cooper’s book of the same name that delves headfirst into the ruthless world of independent television in 1986 is the ongoing rivalry between Lord Tony Baddingham (David Tennant) and Rupert Campbell-Black (Alex Hassell). While both may not want to admit it, the rivalry does drive them. “We both really want to outdo the other and not let the other win,” Hassell tells TV Insider in the video interview above with him and Tennant for Rivals ahead of the October 18 premiere. “Tony doesn’t feel like he wants it. Tony hates it. Yet it also proves to be a huge engine for him,” says Tennant, adding, without it, “I suppose maybe he wouldn’t be winning as often as he is.” The actors can also find aspects of each other’s character they think their counterparts could respect. “I...

Exclusive: Liam Keelan is exiting his role as Disney’s SVP of Original Content, Emea, we can reveal.
The veteran British exec has been with Disney for nearly five years, but has decided to leave in early 2025. News of the departure was transmitted internally moments ago.
A recruitment process for a replacement is set to begin, and will no doubt attract big players from the international community, given the scope of the role.
Keelan built the Europe and Africa programming team from scratch as Disney+ went international, and has seen the group produce 70 originals under his leadership. His UK-based exec team includes scripted chief Lee Mason, unscripted head Sean Doyle for unscripted content and production management head Amanda Wilkie-Sweeney, and he also oversees local commissioners across the Emea region.
Earlier this year, his team unveiled a series of projects out of Spain and France, news that followed Keelan last year...

The marketing team for the hit Prime Video superhero satire series "The Boys" has done some incredible work blurring the lines between the show's reality and our own reality with a strong social media presence for fictional mega-conglomerate Vought International. They've also helped bridge the gap between seasons with things like the hilarious fake Fox News-style segments "Seven on 7," and now they've provided a quick update on one of season 4's biggest loose ends... sort of.
In a post on the website formerly known as Twitter, the official Vought International account shared an update on the status of A-Train (Jessie T. Usher), who disappeared in the penultimate episode of the season after Homelander (Antony Starr) discovered that he was the mole inside the Seven secretly working for The Boys.
Vought has frequently spun the disappearance of various supes in different ways, even replacing Black Noir under everybody's noses after the original one died.

The satirical superhero series "The Boys" has done a phenomenal job of making its fictional world feel just as lived-in and established as our own. Instead of Fox News, they have Vought News, for example, but they have also included a whole bunch of celebrity cameos that make that fictional world feel a little less fictional. Sometimes the cameos are just a fun bit of stunt casting, but occasionally they elevate the scene or actually have meaning behind them. Series showrunner Eric Kripke has done a pretty good job of using the cameos sparingly but going for the gold when he does, occasionally asking series co-executive producer Seth Rogen to help him secure some of his more famous friends.

Prime Video's "The Boys" was originally a comic book series co-created by writer Garth Ennis and artist Darick Robertson. In both versions, the Boys are a five-person operator squad dedicated to taking down superheroes who, when they're off-camera, are not paragons of justice. "Supes" have all the normal human capacity for depravity, but with superpowers and the absence of accountability typical of celebrities, you get wrathful, apathetic screw-ups who think they're gods. The Boys are there to remind them they're only human. Ennis put this thesis as such:
"My own take on superheroes is that if they really existed they'd be between movie stars and politicians. They'd be movie stars because they'd be glamorous and fabulous looking and the people would follow their lives exactly as if they were reading fictional adventures. But they'd be like politicians because they'd have a genuine and tangible effect on our lives and our world.

So far, 2024 has been much better for television than expected, given the impact of the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes in 2023. However, there was one genre that viewers were desperate to see more of, and that was period dramas. Aside from Bridgerton, there weren't too many premieres to be excited about in the first half of the year.
The second half, however, has some very interesting titles that you might want to check out. Here are 8 of the most promising period drama premieres to look forward to in the coming months of 2024.
Winter Palace
A co-production of Switzerland's RTS1, Play Suisse and Netflix, Winter Palace takes viewers to the snowy mountains and luxurious hotel of the early 1900s. The show lands in a sweet spot between a typical period drama and the modernity of The White Lotus, offering a different take on the aristocracy of the time.

Locked In Movie Review Rating:
Star Cast: Famke Janssen, Rose Williams, Alex Hassell, Finn Cole, Anna Friel
Director: Nour Wazzi
Locked In Movie Review ( Photo Credit – IMDb )
What’s Good: The film’s initial allure is undeniably captivating, immersing audiences in a gothic melodrama enriched by Nour Wazzi’s direction and the opulent setting. The clever twist of Katherine’s locked-in syndrome adds a unique layer to the mystery, initially promising an engaging plot.
What’s Bad: As the story progresses, “Locked In” disappoints with a lackluster execution of its promising elements. The detective game loses its charm, giving way to a predictably stretched conclusion. Famke Janssen’s performance, though promising, falls short under Rowan Joffe’s direction. The film’s reliance on a frustrating trope and a limited cast further hampers its impact.
Loo Break: Feel free to take a break during the prolonged flashbacks and contemplative scenes. You...

Not to sound like a stereotype, but I don't particularly get along with my mother-in-law. But the situation in the latest Netflix thriller, "Locked Up," is a great reminder that things could always be much, much worse. Despite little fanfare upon release and next to no promotion tied to it, "Locked In" has been consistently holding it down on the streamer's Top 10 list since it arrived on November 1. If you've not heard of the film, here's the official synopsis:
Katherine, a former Hollywood actor, wakes up in the hospital unable to move. She's been hit by a car and suffers from locked-in syndrome — her eyes are the only thing she's able to move. Through her nurse, Nicky, we find out what's led to Katherine's hospitalization. Katherine, communicating with her via letter board, blinks when Nicky reads the correct letter: She claims there's been a murder. Through flashbacks, we see snapshots...

One of the stars of a British TV show currently in production has boasted that the set is so sexy, bosses have drafted in not one but two intimacy coordinators.

In a media landscape saturated with superheros, one show manages to stand out from the rest. Eric Kripke's "The Boys" follows a ragtag group of human vigilantes in a world where superheroes are not only real, but just as flawed as the rest of us. The Prime Video series is bursting with super-abled people, each of whom possesses a unique set of powers. The fun of the series lies in not only watching what these "supes" can do, but seeing how they inevitably use their abilities for mischief and debauchery.
However, while they're incredibly fun, these powers can be hard to fathom; some are downright confounding. And these examples are merely the tip of the iceberg.
