Eager to move into horror, Spanish director Miguel Martí is partnering with famed actress-producer Macarena Gómez and distributor Carlos Guerrero on an ambitious project to find their perfect hair-raising script.
The trio’s respective, Madrid-based companies, Wonder Ficción, Cilantro Films and 39 Escalones, have launched the We Are Looking for Your Horror Script initiative, putting the call out to screenwriters with a penchant for chills, thrills and the macabre to submit their works from March 2 to April 16 via the website buscamostuguiondeterror.com.
The winning script will be announced on July 13 at the Sotogrande Music Festival, one of the initiative’s many partners. The winner will initially receive €4,000 as a four-year option on the script in addition to €3,600 for three months of development work. The producers will seek to finance the production over the four-year period. A purchase of the script under previously agreed upon terms will be effective once financing is confirmed.

The film is slated to hit theaters this fall.
“We chose locations such as the Parque Natural de Las Lagunas de La Mata y Torrevieja (Alicante), because of its picturesque landscape of huge salt mountains surrounded by pink waters—it’s the perfect contrast to our thrilling, dark story,” Romero relayed.

The familiar proverb “the road to hell is paved with good intentions” comes to mind in director David Hebrero‘s Everyone Will Burn, a stunning technicolor horror fable set in contemporary Spain. A small town’s attempts to thwart an apocalyptic prophecy instead unwittingly fester over forty years before the film’s events, creating seismic repercussions in the present.
Hebrero, who co-wrote with Javier Kiran, is less interested in the prophecy itself and more in how the concept of evil turns the town inside out. In Hebrero and lead actor Macarena Gómez’s capable hands, Everyone Will Burn offers a devilishly compelling depiction of religious mania run amok.
After the opening text explains the town prophecy, Everyone Will Burn introduces María José right as she’s preparing to step off a ledge and end her pain. She’s stopped by the sudden arrival of a strange girl, Lucía (newcomer Sofía García), caked in muck.

One of the most difficult day to day questions facing Christian theologians is this: how does anybody go to Heaven when somebody they love is in Hell? How is existing in a state of bliss possible, or even desirable, in such a context? Wouldn’t most parents prefer yto be where their children are, no matter the personal cost? This question lies at the heart of David Hebrero’s complex and not altogether successful fable, which sees the mother of a youth who died by suicide abruptly confronting the nature of her feelings for him and her desire for revenge.
Suicide, to the Catholic inhabitants of small Spanish villages like the one where this is set, is a mortal sin. Maria José (Macarena Gómez) sees this as all the more unjust because her boy was hounded to his death, relentlessly bullied for being a little person. She too is held in contempt by.

Deep Fear, not to be confused with last year’s film about monsters under the streets of Paris (which is probably why they added the “Sharks vs Narcs” subtitle to the film for its digital release), is a call back to the shark films of the past. Not to Jaws or its imitators but to something earlier, like Shark!, Shark’s Treasure, and The Deep where the sharks were a secondary plot element, an added threat for the protagonists to face in addition to other humans.
In the case of Deep Fear that would be Naomi whom we first see showing her co-worker Barney how easily a reef shark can be steered away from people. When she surfaces her partner Jackson that he’s booked another tour.

Writer/Director Álex de la Iglesia, co-writing with Jorge Guerricaechevarría, launched a unique biblical horror story in “30 Coins,” unfurling an overarching battle of good versus evil over the powerful set of silver that Judas once received in his betrayal of Jesus. By the inaugural season’s conclusion, the rural town of Pedraza was left devastated, its residents scattered or worse, and our protagonists in dire straits. “30 Coins” Season 2 hits the ground running in the first two episodes screened for critics at Fantastic Fest, plunging viewers into the deep end of Hell as it lays the groundwork for a densely packed season with apocalyptic stakes.
Season 2 picks up immediately where Season 1 ended, with the restored collection of silver scattered once more thanks to the sacrifice of rogue priest Father Vergara (Eduard Fernández). His body gets collected by a black arts practitioner who sets about prepping his body for a resurrection ritual.

Álex de la Iglesia's "30 Coins" is one of the best horror shows of the past decade, one that packs 30 different horror movies into one show that begins with a cow giving birth to a human baby that turns into a spider monster in a small Spanish village. This is de la Iglesia's biggest and best work to date, a super ambitious, hyper-stylized, soaked-in-blood show that stares down at the biggest evils of humanity, at primordial fears, and spits them out covered in blood and guts.
Where season 1 felt a bit more episodic (at first), with different shenanigans plaguing the village building up to something big, season 2 has no time for that. The world is ending, and we have to move soon. In a more ambitious, more visually striking, more urgent season premiere, "30 Coins" expands its plot to encompass multiple locations across the globe (and on different planes of existence!

"It's not just a lullaby. It's a prophecy... and omen." Drafthouse Films posted their official US trailer for a Spanish horror thriller film titled Everyone Will Burn, originally called Y Todos Arderán in Spanish. This played at the Alamo Drafthouse's Fantastic Fest last fall and the same trailer originally debuted back then, but with Drafthouse Films finally opening this in theaters this summer it's time to give it another look. In a small village in Leon, María José prepares to end her life after failing to get over the death of her son. Everything changes when she is visited by Lucía, a strange little girl who might just be connected to a local legend about the apocalypse. That's quite an enticing pitch! Macarena Gómez and Sofía García co-star as María José and Lucía, along with Rodolfo Sancho, Ana Milán, Rubén Ochandiano, and Germán Torres. This looks pretty gnarly, stay...

The first images for the Spanish youth terror film, El Hombre del Saco (The Bag Man), have arrived now that the film has wrapped up filming. The film has been directed by Ángel Gómez Hernández (Voces) and was produced by Ignacio Cucucovich, Álvaro Ariza (The House of Snails), Juma Fodde and director Gustavo Hernández (The Silent House and Virus 32). That’s a pretty great list of films they have produced. What’s more impressive is that Spanish horror icon Javier Botet ( [•Rec] and Alien Covenant) will play the Bag Man. He will be joined by the equally if not more impressive Macarena Gómez (30 Coins, Shrews Nest...

Everyone Will Burn (Y todos arderán) begins with a text crawl that informs us that in 1980 the residents of Razas del Monte sacrificed a baby in the hopes it would prevent the apocalypse they believed was imminent. They’ve managed to keep it covered up, until now.
That’s replaced by a view of the countryside accompanied by the sound of tortured breathing. We see the immaculately dressed María José climb up to the edge of a bridge, ready to kill herself. As she does Lucia (Sofía García) a strange-looking little girl, dirty and dishevelled, walks up behind her and asks “Mama”? Since her suicide attempt is linked to the death of her son and those responsible, including the mayor’s son, managing to escape being prosecuted this has a strong effect on her.

Off the heels of a world premiere at the Karlovy Vary Film Festival, where he scooped the Proxima Special Jury Prize, writer-director Eduardo Casanova arrives in Montreal to screen his latest feature “La Piedad” (“La Pietà”) as part of the Queer Genre Cinema Spotlight at Fantasia. The screening marks its North American debut.
The film offers a delightfully bizarre peek into the lives of manic and obsessive Libertad (Ángela Molina), a mother with an insatiable desire to be needed, and her son, Mateo (Manel Llunell), who warily leans into her toxic trappings as the pair become increasingly entwined.
A personal story unfurls in tandem with a poignant subplot that likens their familial relationship to that of a populace and its dictator, showing that those in control of a mere few can use propaganda just as readily as a sadistic leader to manipulate their wards into submission.

Appropriately enough given the show’s enigmatic nature, the slow drip of information about a second season of Spanish genre legend Alex de la Iglesia’s occult horror series “30 Coins” has, for the most part, been cryptic at best. That tradition continued Friday, after HBO Max confirmed the second season, when “Money Heist’s” Najwa Nimri, one of Spain’s biggest film and TV stars, teased her participation in the upcoming season.
Apart from the show’s three leads – Eduard Fernández as Father Vergara, Megan Montaner as veterinarian-turned-demon-hunter Elena and Miguel Ángel Silvestre as Mayor Paco – no other casting has yet been confirmed, but Nimri posted an Instagram story which included part of the Season 2 teaser and the phrase: “We start a new adventure,” while also tweeting #30Monedas – the show’s Spanish-language title.

Principal photography is just about to wrap on this independent film toplined by Macarena Gómez, Rodolfo Sancho, Rubén Ochandiano and Ana Milán. “A spiritual successor to Rosemary’s Baby” is how David Hebrero describes his second feature following Dulcinea, a horror-drama entitled Y todos arderán (lit. “And They’ll All Burn”). In addition, the filmmaker asserts that it will emit whiffs of the Italian giallo and Spanish fantaterror genres, as well as absorbing and exuding unashamedly obvious influences from the juggernauts of contemporary fantastical film, such as Álex de la Iglesia, Ari Aster and Robert Eggers (The Witch). As a result, expectations are sky-high. And it’s surely for this very reason that the cast, comprising Macarena Gómez, Rodolfo Sancho (whom we...

Our founder and editor Todd Brown wrote about the crowdfunding project back in 2017. A few months back we happily directed your attention towards Ángel Gómez Hernández’s Behind, an atmospheric horror slice uniquely grappling with the aftermath of divorce. Now, after a healthy festival run, the Spanish chiller has found its way online. While the build-up may come with a few too many familiar sights and sounds, the overall production is nothing short of stylish and reaches a creepy crescendo by tapping into very identifiable fears. Monster meets reality in a story centered on an embattled mother (Macarena Gómez) who has to face the dread of losing her child.
