In David Cronenberg's "Eastern Promises," Nikolai (Viggo Mortensen) exudes calm ruthlessness from the very first moment he's introduced. Working as the family driver for a dangerous crime family in London, Nikolai acts as a personal bodyguard to Kirill (Vincent Cassel), the crime boss' son. There are several memorable Nikolai scenes in Cronenberg's frenetic gangster drama. For starters, there's a scene in which he is casually about to prepare a frozen corpse, his necktie flung over his shoulder, completely calm and composed. In this scene, Mortensen cements the kind of character Nikolai is by extinguishing a cigarette on his tongue without so much as flinching.
However, the standout scene in "Eastern Promises" is undoubtedly the raw, realistic bath-house fight scene between Nikolai and two goons, who ambush and attempt to kill him. This is where Nikolai truly shines as a character, as it is a testimony to his sheer strength...

Love hurts. Love is complicated.
And in particular, for one man who is trying to keep all his promises during the Armenian genocide.
In The Promise, Oscar Isaacs plays an Armenian medical student who made a promise to wed a girl for money to attend school in Turkey. During his student life, he falls in love with another woman and made certain promises to her too. As the Armenian genocide unfolds, he has made many promises, in which he had to keep and had to break.
The Promise also stars Charlotte Le Bon, Christian Bale, Shohreh Aghdashloo, Angela Sarafyan, Tom Hollander, James Crowell, Jean Reno, and Tamer Hassan. It is directed by Terry George.
Lrm had a sit-down interview with the lovely actresses Charlotte Le Bon and Angela Sarafyan. We had a wonderful discussion about the love triangle in the film and what supposedly would happen if their characters would’ve met in the movie.

Musician Benjamin Wallfisch is redefining the way audiences hear the sounds and feelings of movie music.
His recent scores are Desert Dancer, Hidden Figures, A Cure For Wellness, Lights Out as well as upcoming films Annabelle 2 and Bitter Harvest, so understandably it’s been a busy time over the past few years for the British film composer.
Recently Wallfisch spoke about the elements of composing and the opportunity to tell stories through his music.
Coming from a family of musicians, and classically trained at the Royal Academy of Music, Wallfisch says it was a happy accident that he discovered the sounds that have been instrumental when composing scores. “I’d spend hours examining this fascinating sound and would experiment with it, while exploring other avenues as I was learning the craft and creating electronic sounds.” What sustained him through his years of schooling and training was his love of storytelling.

Some impressive action sequences fail to enliven this tale of an artist living in the shadow of the Stalin regime
A well-meaning but overstated drama set during the 1930s famine in Ukraine, Bitter Harvest focuses on talented artist Yuri (Max Irons) and his beloved Natalka (Samantha Barks). Separated when Yuri is imprisoned by Stalin’s oppressive regime (led by a malevolent Tamer Hassan as a local commissar) the couple must survive Holodomor, the death-by-starvation programme by which Stalin hoped to quell the Ukrainians.
The Cossack horseback action sequences are impressive, but there are too few shots of thundering hooves and too many scenes of stilted political discourse for this picture to take flight.

Renowned, primarily, for his performances in gritty, British thrillers – Tamer Hassan’s latest endeavour represents something of a departure for the actor, playing the chief antagonist in the moving period piece Bitter Harvest, casting an eye over the devastating Holodomor, in Ukraine.
However he has since returned back to his roots – starring as Harry in the forthcoming Snatch TV series – and speaking to HeyUGuys Hassan explained that fans of the original Guy Ritchie movie are bound to love what’s in store.
“It’s the same formula, Snatch is the coolest movie brand on the planet as you know,” he said. “It’s comedy and I love comedy and it’s brilliant the way it’s done. If you like Snatch, it’s ten Snatch movies. The cast is great, I mean Rupert Grint in Snatch? You’re gonna be pleasantly surprised because he is brilliant”.

The Holodomor was a man-made famine that existed in Ukraine in 1932, and lasted over a year. In that time up to seven million people were murdered, dying from starvation. Yet how much do you know about this barbaric catastrophe, if at all? It’s somehow managed to be mostly untold in cinema, nor at schools for that matter, and so much lies on the shoulders of George Mendeluk, in one of the very first English language productions to cast an eye over this horrific set of events. Yet after watching this underwhelming production, it’s hard not to wish for another version.
Yuri (Max Irons) is raised in a respectable family, son of Yaroslav (Barry Pepper) and grandson of the celebrated war hero Ivan (Terence Stamp), and he falls for childhood friend Natalka (Samantha Barks), wanting nothing more than to marry the love of his life, and...

Guy Ritchie’s cult classic film Snatch has been adapted into a new series for Crackle. It obviously doesn’t look as good as the original film, but it could still end up being an entertaining series to watch!
The cult classic film Snatch is now a high-stakes, high-octane Crackle Original Series. Get in on the action, gangster mentality, heists and rapid-fire dialogue that earned the original movie a shite-load of fans. Inspired by a real life heist in London, the Snatch series centers on a group of twenty-something, up and coming hustlers who stumble upon a truck load of stolen gold bullion and are suddenly thrust into the high-stakes world of organized crime. The boys must quickly learn to navigate the treacherous waters of London’s underworld as rogue cops, gypsy fighters, international mobsters and local villains descend.

Though it hasn’t garnered the same traction as, say, 24: Legacy or FX’s acclaimed Fargo, Crackle is in the process of rebooting Snatch, a serialized version of Guy Ritchie’s cult crime caper that’s due to premiere in exactly two months’ time.
Comprised of 10 episodes in total, the Snatch of 2017 is headed up by former Harry Potter star Rupert Grint. He’ll play Charlie Cavendish, a budding hustler who makes a foray into London’s seedy crime scene, only to find himself in deep with the sharks. The high-stakes world of organized crime awaits, though Crackle’s interpretation looks to be a much more refined version of Ritchie’s 2000 original.
That’s a little disappointing, particularly when you consider that the gritty, unforgiving world of Snatch is part and parcel of the film’s charm, but we’re willing to lend Crackle and the creative team the...

At the beginning of December we were delighted to debut the first poster for George Mendeluk’s Bitter Harvest. Today we have a fine follow up for you, the first look at the stirring first trailer for the film. Co-written by Mendeluk with Richard Bachynsky-Hoover from on his original story, the film stars Max Irons, Samantha Barks, Barry Pepper, Tamer Hassan and Terence Stamp.
The new trailer portrays the awful reality of Stalin’s horrific collectivisation during the 1930s, otherwise known Holodomor (a translation of the Ukrainian phrase ‘execution by hunger’). The central love story between Max Irons and Samantha Barks gives an emotional grounding to the unthinkable torment endured during that period. The two sides are drawn well in the trailer, and Mendeluk’s direction looks to capture the terror and passion so important to telling this story.

"How many lives is this war worth?!" Roadside Attractions has debuted an official trailer for a sweeping historical drama titled Bitter Harvest, set during "The Holodomor" in Ukraine in between the first and second World War. The "Holodomor" was a genocidal famine engineered by Joseph Stalin, as an effort to stop the Ukrainian independence movement, resulting in the deaths of millions of people. The film tells the story of a romance between a young Ukrainian couple torn apart by the starvation. Max Irons stars, along with Samantha Barks as his lover, also including Terence Stamp, Barry Pepper, Richard Brake, Aneurin Barnard, Tom Austen, Tamer Hassan and Lucy Brown. This looks okay, but it's hard to tell with this trailer. There's too much going on and the director isn't that impressive, it might not be any good. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for George Mendeluk's Bitter Harvest, originally from...

Poundland has been selling Blu-rays! And we've been buying and watching them! Tornado Warning, anyone?
I’ve covered the DVD section of Poundland before. I love it, even if I do only ever get around to watching about half of the discs I buy.
Unfortunately, hunting for DVDs in Poundland has become a bit of a dead sport. It’s partly because streaming services like Netflix have given us even easier access to weird films that might turn out to be rubbish. It’s also because Poundland have taken to stocking used DVDs, meaning they have a lot of big Hollywood films that are the same thing you could buy anywhere. That’s not what I go to Poundland for. I’m shopping for strangeness! Not only that, this Den of Geek writer has some very mild issues with germs and can’t really cope with touching second-hand DVDs.

Scanlan, Mem Ferda and Tamer Hassan (The Business).

This embarrassing slice of British nonsense, featuring the assassination of nonces and drug dealers, is rescued only by a moment of climactic comedy
Here’s the year’s first Brit geezer-gangster nonsense panto, featuring a fair bit of torture porn. It features Craig Fairbrass, Tamer Hassan and James Cosmo; Danny Dyer’s duties in Albert Square probably prevented him from taking part. Fairbrass plays granite-faced Alfie, a tough ex-army guy made good, devoted to his wife and teenage daughter, but trying to keep them from the reality of his work: killing people for a military-style assassination unit with the fascistic name of Home Front, run by Albert Chapman, played by James Cosmo, whose monopoly on this kind of role in this kind of film is one of British cinema’s enduring curiosities. Alfie’s targets happen to be mostly nonces and drug dealers, which is why he’s supposed to...

Danny Dyer ''saved'' 'EastEnders. The 38-year-old actor plays Queen Vic landlord Mick Carter in the BBC soap and his friend and former 'EastEnders' star Tamer Hassan says he's the best thing to happen to the show in a long time, although it isn't challenging for him as an actor. Speaking at the premiere of new British action gangster movie 'Breakdown' at the Odeon in Covent Garden, Tamer, 47, told Bang Showbiz: ''He's working, he likes to work Danny. He's a great movie star, he can't put a foot wrong can he. He's like marmite, you either love him or you hate him.
