When I hear the name Elizabeth McGovern, I immediately think of ’80s projects she worked on like Ordinary People, Racing with the Moon, Once Upon a Time in America, The Bedroom Window, and, most of all, She’s Having a Baby. Which probably gives away the fact that I have never watched Downton Abbey. McGovern has continued working steadily over the decades since the ’80s movies I mentioned, and these days is likely best known for playing the role of Cora Crawley on Downton Abbey and then reprising that role in two feature films. Next up: Variety reports that McGovern has signed on to join the cast of Anne Rice’s The Talamasca.

Nine years ago, writer/director Jason Krawczyk brought the world the horror comedy He Never Died, which introduced viewers to a badass immortal character named Jack (played by Henry Rollins), who had been around for thousands of years. This character had franchise potential that Krawczyk and Rollins were well aware of; they were planning to continue his story through a feature sequel and an eight episode mini-series. But for some reason, they were never able to get a follow-up off the ground, and Krawczyk’s sequel script ended up being rewritten into a film called She Never Died, which focused on a different character and wasn’t directed by Krawczyk. According to online trivia, the action comedy thriller Don’t Mess with Grandma (which Krawczyk wrote and directed under his preferred title of Sunset Superman) is a project that grew out of the filmmaker’s frustration over the He Never Died franchise not gaining traction.

Home invasion films are a dime a dozen nowadays, with this year alone seeing the wide releases of The Strangers: Chapter One and Abigail. But surplus can often breed creativity, with filmmakers forced to seek innovative ways to make their films stand out from the pack. That’s just what Jason Krawczyk (He Never Died) does with Don’t Mess With Grandma, a gleefully violent comedy that has fun subverting various home invasion tropes.

Previously, in Time Bandits, the titular group landed in Medieval England and liberated a village from the clutches of its fascist sheriff. That said, since Bittelig left the portal to the Jurassic Age open, a dinosaur time traveled to Medieval England, thereby fueling the dragon rumors that we keep hearing about till this day. Then, Kevin and the bandits went to Prohibition Era New York, where they became gangsters by smuggling in mead from 700 Ce England. That lasted longer than it should’ve. But eventually they were caught red-handed and cordially asked to exit the time period. Elsewhere, Saffron found herself face-to-face with Fianna, but since the latter was after Kevin, she allowed Saffron to live. I don’t know for how long, though, because the Supreme Being revealed that he was planning to take back the map (the one that allowed one to travel through space and time), erase humanity permanently,...

‘General Hospital’ (Gh) spoilers state that Ingo Rademacher played the role of Jasper Jacks on and off from 1996 to 2021.
‘General Hospital’ Spoilers: Vaccine Mandates Were Put In Place
For those newer viewers, Jasper, or simply “Jax,” is the father of Josslyn Jacks (Eden Mccoy) and the ex-husband of Carly Spencer (Laura Wright).
Right off the bat, the character became popular, and Jax was quite the charmer. General Hospital initially paired him with Sonny Corinthos’s longtime love, Brenda Barrett (Vanessa Marcil).
He came full circle when he wed Brenda’s nemesis, Carly, in 2007. The couple divorced due to Carly’s unhealthy connection with Jax’s enemy, Sonny.
The show had wanted someone who embodied the qualities of a smug, wealthy man with a soft heart. As a businessman, Jax could be shrewd and even sometimes ruthless.
Jax established the Metro Court Hotel, named after his then-fiancée, Courtney Matthews. The hotel...

Netflix acquired Richard Linklater's comedy "Hit Man" out of its screening at the 2023 Toronto International Film Festival and the choice seems to have paid off for them. /Film has been a little more down on the movie than most (read our review here), but "Hit Man" soon hit #1 on Netflix's streaming charts after its June 7 debut on the platform. A fun trope of contract killers in movies is the stealthy way the assassin moves about in plain sight while under the guise of another person. This is the trope that Glen Powell‘s new Netflix film, Hit Man, plays on. Powell and Richard Linklater wrote the film, which was inspired by an unbelievable true story. Our own Chris Bumbray felt ecstatic about this movie in his film review from the Toronto International Film Festival, saying, “Notably, despite being a movie about killing, the film is pretty non-violent and charming. If there was ever a feel-good movie to be made about murder-for-hire, this is it.” You can read the rest of his review Here.
Netflix has just released the new trailer for the comedy. The synopsis of the film reads,
“A mild-mannered psychology professor (Glen Powell) interested in electronics takes a sideline bugging undercover cops in sting operations, specializing in setting up phony hits.

Netflix’s “Scoop” is inspired by the real events behind the bold efforts of “Newsnight” booker Sam McAlister to secure an interview with Prince Andrew amidst the fallout he felt from his relationship with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
It traces the admirable behind-the-scenes teamwork of McAlister, journalist and interviewer Emily Maitlis (Gillian Anderson), editor Esme Wren (Romola Garai), producer Stewart Maclean (Richard Goulding) and ultimate fact-checker Freddy (Jordan Kouamé), as well as photographer Jae Donnolly (Connor Swindells).
High stakes, adrenaline and twists and turns make “Scoop” a compelling watch, in addition to the star-stacked cast that portrays all the real-life players.
Here are the cast and characters of “Scoop” on Netflix:

Blending found footage and what appears to be grainy 16mm (they shot the film on an early Dv as a matter of fact), Kyle McConaghy and Joe DeBoer’s Dead Mail embraces the creepiness of its concept. Like Jane Schoenbrun’s I Saw the TV Glow or Kyle Edward Ball’s Skinamarink, this is the stuff of subconscious nightmares, though Dead Mail falls slightly more into the slasher camp. The film is effectively creepy from the feeling that––à la Harmony Korine’s Trash Humpers––it’s a relic of the past. Also, like Schoenbrun’s film, it suggests a story that could have been imagined from a 20/20 segment or a late-night documentary that a child should not have watched after their bedtime but nevertheless did.
Dead Mail delivers something original, playing its horror down the line, no doubt influenced by lesser slasher movies. Yet the picture is grounded in...

The trailer for Star Wars: The Acolyte has finally dropped, and it once again whisks you away to a galaxy far away. Announced by Lucasfilm in 2020, it took the production four years to get off the ground, but it is finally here, and it looks good.
Like most Star Wars projects, The Acolyte has been the subject of many discussions and speculation over the years. One of the major topics was the period in which the show was set. The trailer offers an interesting peek into the lives of the Jedi, but the fandom is less than impressed, and the show has already hit a disappointing milestone.

The classless practice of traumatic profiteering is alive and well in Thomas Walton’s micro-budget slasher Camp Pleasant Lake. We’ve become a society obsessed with gnarly true crime documentaries and podcasts, lifting infamous serial killers to celebrity status. As superfans once wrote letters to Charles Manson in prison, studios now churn out streaming programs about despicable icons like Bundy and Dahmer to capitalize on trending viewership. Camp Pleasant Lake is an intriguing commentary on selling someone else’s grief and loss for your next payday, but at no point does Walton’s execution do his “Horror LARPing” concept justice.
The film takes place at Camp Echo Lake, where new owners Rick (Michael Paré) and Darlene Rutherford (Maritza Brikisak) have reopened as an immersive Halloween experience. For $10,000, attendees are treated to “Camp of Terror,” an all-inclusive murder party that ties back to a horrible crime committed on the grounds 20 years prior.

A bunch of horror LARPers meet grisly ends in the micro-budget summer camp slasher, Camp Pleasant Lake. Boasting a small selection of familiar faces from genre cinema and a mystifying lead performance from Jerry Maguire’s Jonathan Lipnicki, who hams it up like a Christmas dinner, Camp Pleasant Lake is a decidedly low brow feature, though not without its bright spots. Michael Paré and Maritza Brikisak are Rick & Darlene Rutherford, the new owners of the cursed camp at Echo Lake. Twenty years ago, the camp was the site of a heinous double murder and the disappearance of Jasper and Echo Meadows. Today the Rutherfords have decided to turn the place into a kind of tragedy fantasy camp, with attendees paying big bucks to relive the...

In the "Family Guy" episode "Patriot Games", Peter (Seth MacFarlane) is enlisted to play for the New England Patriots after he charges through a crowd of people on his way to the bathroom at a high school reunion. Peter, the shallow egotist that he is, is soon fired for showboating, but at least he got to meet Tom Brady (himself). The plot continues into a snobs-vs.-slobs story wherein Peter becomes the coach for a British football team called the London Sillinannies.
Like every episode of "Family Guy," "Patriot Games" contains many, many asides, pop culture references, and throw-away gags presented without any context whatsoever. Case in point: early in the episode, two characters are watching the news on TV, and the announcer, having finished speaking about the main story of the night, announces "Coming up: America's hottest new curse word. Clemen!" Or maybe it's "kleeman." There is no explanation as to what "kleeman" means,...

Shot in dense, high-contrast black and white, writer-director C.J. “Fiery” Obasi’s “Mami Wata,” unspools like a mysterious dream. It’s both inscrutable and hypnotic, delivering indelible images while remaining narratively opaque. Billed as a “West African folklore,” its story could be taken as a straightforward fable about tradition vs. modernity and how power corrupts. But as its plot unravels, confounding layers surface beneath that easy explanation. “Mami Wata,” a Sundance discovery selected to be Nigeria’ official Oscar submission, keeps the audience entranced if never truly engaged.
Taking its cues from the legend of the female water spirit revered in that part of the world, Obasi’s story centers on Mama Efe (Rita Edochie), a medium and healer who claims to hold the keys to the all-powerful Mami Wata. The inhabitants of the isolated oceanside village shower Mama Efe with crops and gifts in an effort to win over the water deity.

Robert Pattinson needed a makeover to transform into Edward Cullen, according to “Twilight” director Catherine Hardwicke.
While appearing on the “Happy Sad Confused” podcast to mark the 15th anniversary of the beloved 2008 film, Hardwicke recalled how studio Summit Entertainment was skeptical Pattinson could “look good” as the heartthrob character.
“When he came over to my house, he had black bangs for hair and was kind of out of shape because he was hanging out at the pub all the time,” Hardwicke said of first auditioning Pattinson. “I sent it to Summit and he went over to meet them. They called me back and go, ‘Do you think you can make this guy look good?'”
Hardwicke continued, “I said, ‘Yeah, I do. Did you see his cheekbones? We’re doing a makeover on the hair and everything and he’s going to start working out and he’s going to be gorgeous.

However, the film’s director Catherine Hardwicke is now revealing that the studio behind the franchise was not always Team Pattinson for the role of Edward and expressed concern over his looks during the casting process.
“When he came over to my house, he had black bangs for hair and was kind of out of shape because he was hanging out at the pub all the time,” Hardwicke said during an interview on the Watchalong podcast. “I thought ‘it works not just in person, but it works on screen.’ I had to be sure. The concept that the West, and particularly Europe and the US are some kind of heaven, has been a prevalent one in Asia since time immemorial. At the same time, though, the people who have actually taken the leap do realize that this is not always the case, with a number of movies actually highlighting the fact, with “Everybody's Gotta Love Sometimes” being one of the latest. “My Heavenly City” also moves in the same path, presenting three stories that highlight both the good and the bad of Asians living in the US, and particularly New York City.
Heavenly City will start screening in UK cinemas on 10th November, courtesy of Trinity CineAsia
In the first story, Taiwanese Mavis Fang was supposed to be writing her doctoral dissertation but she decided to take a break to deal with “personal issues”, as she deals with loneliness, depression and a sense of not fitting in,...

Stephen Emery, a producer and film executive who worked for Gale Anne Hurd and Bill Gerber and on films featuring the likes of Clint Eastwood, Anna Kendrick, Liam Hemsworth, Aaron Eckhart and Liam Neeson, has died. He was 46.
Emery died Saturday in a Los Angeles gym after a workout, Big Swell Entertainment CEO Andy Horwitz told The Hollywood Reporter. He recently joined the production company that had launched in October.
“Everyone that had the pleasure to know Stephen Emery is heartbroken over the sudden loss of one of our own,” Horwitz said in a statement. “Stephen was much more than an invaluable producer, he was also an irreplaceable friend. His passion for film was outweighed only by his passion for life, and he lived every day like it was his last. We will miss his adventurous spirit, his loyal friendship and his genuine love for life. "Reacher" was a massive hit for Prime Video when it debuted in 2022, and that wasn't just because it's a non-stop action-fest. After years of fans clamoring for an accurate on-screen depiction, Amazon's streaming series finally gave author Lee Child's Jack Reacher the adaptation he deserved. Alan Ritchson may have been snubbed by Amazon initially, but after a second audition he was cast and came to embody the hulking ex-military investigator from Child's books. Of course, it helped that he was 6 feet, 3 inches tall and weighed in at 235 pounds by the time filming started.
But it wasn't just Ritchson that helped "Reacher" top Nielsen streaming charts and break Prime Video audience records. Alongside the former "Titans" and "Smallville" actor was a capable supporting cast, which included Malcolm Goodwin as Oscar Finlay, the police captain in the fictional town of Margrave, Georgia. Penn Badgley is certainly no Joe Goldberg. The star of You is probably his character’s biggest hater. He’s constantly calling out the serial killer for his problematic ways. But the actor does share one thing in common with Joe. And that is that he’s gotten nauseous a time or two while chopping up bodies. Of course, in Badgley’s case, said bodies are 100% fake. Still, one very gruesome detail about the fake bodies gives them a very life-like look and feel.

"The Simpsons" is one of the most beloved TV shows of all time, and for good reason. Fans have delighted in the antics of Homer, Marge, Bart, Lisa, Maggie, and the rest of Springfield's kooky residents since 1989. But the real strength of the series isn't the characters, but its ability to poke fun at a wide swath of topics without discrimination. Whether you're talking about politics, sports, history, pop culture, or social issues, "The Simpsons" has probably tackled it.
Because of the vast number of its targets, sometimes things that happen on "The Simpsons" later occur in real life. Some of these predictions fall well within the realm of possibility, such as when the episode "Elementary School Musical" depicted prominent economist Bengt R.
