When news broke that the South Park guys were making a Broadway musical, few would have guessed it would go on to win nine Tony Awards. Trey Parker and Matt Stone were probably surprised as well, since their original intention for Book of Mormon was to make an animated movie as a follow-up to one of their biggest movie successes.
That’s what one of the musical’s original stars, Josh Gad, told Jesse Tyler Ferguson on his Dinner’s On Me podcast, via Indiewire. “Trey and Matt thought that they were going to do it as an animated film. It was going to be their follow-up to Team America. And we ended it,” Gad explained about a live reading of the script. “The response was effusive, albeit people were definitely taken aback and shocked. And they had a huddle and they decided in that moment, ‘Let’s try this as a live theatrical thing.

Before it became a Broadway smash hit, “The Book of Mormon” could have gone animated.
Josh Gad, who originated the role of Elder Arnold Cunningham in the 2011 production, said during Sony Music Entertainment’s “Dinner’s On Me” podcast that co-writers Trey Parker and Matt Stone originally set out to make “Book of Mormon” in the vein of beloved animated satirical film “Team America: World Police.”
However, after the live reading of the script, it became clear that “Book of Mormon” was best suited to Broadway.
“Trey and Matt thought that they were going to do it as an animated film. It was going to be their follow up to ‘Team America.’ And we ended it,” Gad said to host Jesse Tyler Ferguson. “The response was effusive. I’ll be it, people were definitely taken aback and shocked. Did you forget about Adam Sandler's 2015 movie "Pixels?" If you did, that makes sense; it was a critical flop that ended up scoring a Razzie nomination (though it at least performed solidly at the box office). Now, according to FlixPatrol, "Pixels" is gaining traction on Netflix, having claimed the number three spot in the streamer's daily top 10 most-streamed movies as of October 14, 2024.
Why "Pixels" is performing well on Netflix's is, frankly, anybody's guess; perhaps affection for the Sandman runs deeper than I realize. In any case, the movie is performing solidly on the streamer, which is also probably news to Sandler's co-stars Kevin James, Josh Gad, Michelle Monaghan, and ... Emmy winners and HBO stalwarts Peter Dinklage and Brian Cox. The movie also has a pretty solid creative team, with Chris Columbus — of "Home Alone" and the first two "Harry Potter" movies — directing and Tim Herlihy co-writing with Timothy Dowling.

Celebrity Wheel of Fortune has now been delayed from October 14th, 2024 until 2025. That means diehard fans will have to wait even longer to see Pat Sajak’s final spin. This is disheartening for those who do not care for Ryan Seacrest, who Pat passed the torch for Season 42. So, why has this happened? Keep reading for more details.

Considering that so many sitcom contemporaries of Gilligan’s Island — The Brady Bunch, Bewitched, Beverly Hillbillies, Get Smart, The Addams Family — were made into feature films, it’s kinda weird that the show’s exotic locales and inherent live-or-die stakes didn’t get the same treatment. As it turns out, it wasn’t for lack of trying.
There have been multiple attempts to bring Gilligan and pals to the big screen, but like the S.S. Minnow, every one of them crashed into the rocks. For example, when the show’s creator, Sherwood Schwartz, was inducted into the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences’ Hall of Fame in 2008, he announced that he and his son Lloyd had just inked a deal for a Gilligan’s Island feature film. The agreement “just happened in the last 48 hours,” Schwartz told TV Guide. “I can’t take this much excitement at my age.”

Sherwood Schwartz's 1964 sitcom "Gilligan's Island" was a pop-cultural powerhouse, attracting a mass audience larger than any of the CBS executives expected. While many critics and audience members criticized the show for being silly, unrealistic, and simplistic, it nonetheless lasted for three hit seasons, and was put into eternal syndication, staying alive in reruns for decades. What's more, the series warranted numerous TV movie sequels and spinoffs, including a 1981 TV movie wherein Gilligan (Bob Denver) and the other castaways met the Harlem Globetrotters -- called, helpfully, "The Harlem Globetrotters on Gilligan's Island" -- and an animated series wherein the castaways became stranded on a distant planet (!). Yes, "Gilligan's Planet" is a thing.
The spinoffs retained all the original cast members, with the exception of Tina Louise, whose character, Ginger, was played by various other actors. Curiously, the Globetrotters movie was the last time an original "Gilligan's Island" project graced the screen.

This week on NBC’s Saturday Night Live, a stressed-out Kamala Harris nearly chose Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story over watching her running mate trade niceties with Jd Vance during the vice presidential debate.
With Heidi Gardner and Chloe Fineman playing moderators Norah O’Donnell and Margaret Brennan, this week’s cold open saw Harris (Maya Rudolph) and her “Grilf” husband Doug Emhoff (Andy Samberg, who also starred in a new digital short) sit down at home to check out Tim Walz’s debate with Vance.

Saturday Night Live took to the debate stage on Saturday with Bowen Yang’s J.D. Vance and Jim Gaffigan’s Tim Walz.
The latest episode spoofed the vice presidential debate from earlier this week, which saw an awkward Vance and goofy Walz go head-to-head in a somewhat cordial debate. And SNL‘s cold open brought that same energy.
The sketch kicked off with Maya Rudolph’s Kamala Harris and Andy Samberg’s Douglas Emhoff sitting down to watch the debate. “I am feeling good tonight,” Rudolph says. “We have got momentum. Liz Cheney’s about to endorse me and Bruce Springsteen. ‘Cause baby I was born to run (referencing his song ‘Born To Run’).”
The debate starts with moderators Heidi Gardner’s Norah O’Donnell and Chloe Fineman’s Margaret Brennan asking for the candidates for their opening statements.
“Thank you for having me. I want to begin with something that will appeal to women voters.

‘SNL’ Cold Open Finds Maya Rudolph’s Harris Stressing Over VP Debate: ‘Why Are They Vibing?’ | Video
“SNL” took on the vice presidential debate in Sunday’s cold open, but it was still Maya Rudolph’s Kamala Harris who took center stage. The cold open was framed with Harris and her husband Doug Emhoff (played by Andy Samberg) watching the VP debate from home. After Samberg’s Emhoff described himself as a Grilf – “which means golden retriever I’d like to French” – Rudolph’s Harris confessed she was nervous about the debate.
The sketch then cut to the debate itself with Bowen Yang reprising his role as GOP running mate Jd Vance and Jim Gaffigan back as Tim Walz.
“I wanna begin with something that’ll appeal to women voters,” Yang’s Vance said. “I understand both moderators tonight are mothers and I like that.”
Cut to Gaffigan’s Walz, caught off guard – “I gotta grade these papers, got a stack of midterms,” he said in a fluster while holding papers.

Sutton Foster, who co-starred with Creel in 2002’s Thoroughly Modern Millie, wrote on Instagram, “My sweet friend. I will love you forever.”
Among the more poignant remembrances pouring onto social media comes from Casey Likes, the young star of Broadway’s Almost Famous and Back to the Future.

The satirical superhero series "The Boys" has done a phenomenal job of making its fictional world feel just as lived-in and established as our own. Instead of Fox News, they have Vought News, for example, but they have also included a whole bunch of celebrity cameos that make that fictional world feel a little less fictional. Sometimes the cameos are just a fun bit of stunt casting, but occasionally they elevate the scene or actually have meaning behind them. Series showrunner Eric Kripke has done a pretty good job of using the cameos sparingly but going for the gold when he does, occasionally asking series co-executive producer Seth Rogen to help him secure some of his more famous friends.

Sherwood Schwartz's "Gilligan's Island" was something of a cultural fulcrum for multiple generations. It was panned by critics when it first aired in 1964, but it was also a massive success, raking in money for CBS, hand over fist. Thanks to a plum syndication deal, reruns of the series stayed on the air for decades after its cancelation in 1967, allowing kids of the '70s, '80s, and '90s to grow up watching it.
Over the years, "Gilligan's Island" also enjoyed multiple TV movie sequels and a few animated spinoffs, seeing as the series never quite left the public consciousness. One might have seen "Rescue from Gilligan's Island" in 1978, "The Castaways of Gilligan's Island" in 1979, or "The Harlem Globetrotters on Gilligan's Island" in 1981. Saturday morning kiddos may have also caught Filmation's "The New Adventures of Gilligan" in 1974, or the bonkers 1982 spinoff "Gilligan's Planet."

When Josh Gad joined the voice cast of Disney's animated movie "Frozen," which came out in 2013, he probably didn't think that he was about to become part of one of the biggest pop culture juggernauts in recent history. Both the original and its 2019 sequel, "Frozen II," made buckets of money at the box office, while the first movie also scored an Academy Award for best original song (thanks to the inescapable earworm "Let It Go"). Plus, Gad's character Olaf, a living snowman who wants to experience summer, became a breakout success on his own. So does Gad have any regrets about his "Frozen" experience? Yes, actually. He wishes he'd changed his voice a little more for the character.
"If I could do it all over again, I would not have lent that snowman my voice. I would've created a different voice," Gad said while participating in an interview at Fan Expo Canada,...

“Mel is 98 years young, and I can’t go into detail just how involved he is, but let’s say very,” Gad said this week on the Let's Talk Off Camera with Kelly Ripa podcast. “It’s been such a thrill to get to see him literally still on form in every single way. He is so effortlessly funny and so unbelievably brilliant.”

Gad will star in the sequel and co-wrote the screenplay as well. But before the movie got the green light, he had to sell the concept to the comedy legend. “When we were pitching him the original conceit for what we wanted to do with the film, at the beginning, he goes, ‘I’m just telling you now,...

What’s the secret acting trick to nailing a part in a Trey Parker and Matt Stone project? Shut the hell up and say the lines Trey Parker and Matt Stone wrote, of course.
When the South Park creators’ long-awaited comedic musical about their favorite friendly religious order, The Book of Mormon, premiered at the Eugene O’Neill Theatre in 2011, it was an instant hit. Critics and audiences praised the playwriting and the performances, specifically that of Frozen star Josh Gad in the role of Elder Cunningham. Then, when Gad left the show in 2012, the Book of Mormon producers scrambled to find an actor who could handle the chaotic script from Parker and Stone while most closely imitating Gad’s immaculate performance, hiring future Miracle Workers star Jon Bass to do his best Gad impression.

Sometimes, when you host a talk show like Kelly Ripa does, part of the job description involves rescuing distraught guests. It turns out, this is exactly what happened recently during a segment of the show. So, what went down, and how did Kelly have to end up playing the hero?
Kelly Ripa Has Seen It All In Her Years As A Talk Show Host
When it comes to hosting a popular talk show, Kelly Ripa is now an industry veteran. She has been perfecting her craft for decades. She started out as a co-host with Regis Philbin. She even had American Idol and Wheel Of Fortune host Ryan Seacrest as a co-anchor at one point.
These days, Ripa shares hosting duties with her husband, Mark Consuelos. However, even though her show has been a family affair for some time, Kelly Ripa still has to prepare for the unexpected and act accordingly.

Josh Gad reveals the “big mistake” he made when it came to voicing Olaf in Frozen.
“If I could do it all over again, I would not have lent that snowman my voice. I would’ve created a different voice,” the actor shared during a recent interview at Fan Expo Canada. “It’s very weird being in a supermarket and having a little child go like this …” slowly turning his head to the side.
“That was my first big mistake,” Gad added. “But, you know, people tell me I have a very unique voice. People seem to like my voice, so I try to give it to them when I can.”
The Beauty and the Beast actor lent his voice to Olaf, the wildly popular snowman, in 2013’s Frozen as well as its 2019 sequel. He has also voiced the character in several Disney shorts. Gad is expected to join Kristen Bell...

A recent interview on Live with Kelly and Mark took a severe turn, and a guest ended up in tears and terrified.
Kelly is always a consummate expert and has run her show smoothly for decades, and incidents like this rarely happen.
There have always been minor mishaps, like wardrobe malfunctions and Mark unexpectedly running off stage if he loses at Stump Mark.
A typical guest experience often does not include screaming and crying, which unfortunately happened recently on Live.
Kelly and Mark will joke around with each other or with Michael Gelman, the show’s executive producer, but they are usually respectful to the guests.
Recently, Josh Gad talked Kelly and Mark into allowing him to prank a guest by reportedly telling them she’d like it.

Do you want to build a snowman? Are you still avoiding capes? After the gargantuan success of both "Frozen" and its sequel at Walt Disney Animation and "Incredibles 2" at Pixar Animation, it should come as no surprise that both franchises are being given more sequels, as announced officially at the D23 Expo in Anaheim, California today.
/Film's Jacob Hall was in attendance during the studio's big panel presentation at D23, where the studios revealed "Frozen 3" will arrive in 2027, and "The Incredibles 3" is currently in development at Pixar. Since neither "Frozen II" nor "Incredibles 2" had specific titles for the sequels, it doesn't seem like the three-quels will have any sort of subtitle either.
So, what do we know about both of these sequels after the big announcement at D23?

The HBO Documentary Films and Apatow Productions project, now in production, will trace Brooks’ journey from Brooklyn to Hollywood and Broadway. Joe Beshenkovsky, who last worked with Apatow and Bonfiglio on HBO’s four-hour documentary George Carlin’s American Dream, will edit the documentary.
Apatow promises a career-spanning film about the comedy legend behind classic movie farces and parodies. “I went into comedy because of my love for Mel Brooks. This project is the dream of a lifetime,” the Hollywood writer-director-producer said in a statement.
Brooks’ career began with Sid Caesar’s Your Show of Shows where he worked alongside the late Carl Reiner, Neil Simon, and Larry Gelbart. That’s after the teenage comedian in the Catskills conquered the entertainment world with his satirical comedy.

Few names (if any) loom larger over the world of comedy than Mel Brooks. Now, his eight-decade career will be the subject of an upcoming two-part HBO special from co-directors Judd Apatow and Michael Bonfiglio.
The documentary project, which is being produced through Apatow Productions, will reunite the two men with editor Joe Beshenkovsky, who collaborated with them on their recent documentaries “The Zen Diaries of Garry Shandling” and “George Carlin’s American Dream.”
“I went into comedy because of my love for Mel Brooks,” Apatow said in a statement announcing the documentary. “This project is the dream of a lifetime.”
While the film does not yet have a title or release date, Brooks’ remarkable career will offer no shortage of material to pull from. After launching his career in the 1950s on the storied writing staff of Sid Caesar’s “Your Show of Shows” and collaborating with Carl Reiner on...

‘Wonder Man’ is one of the upcoming live-action shows in the MCU, based on the comic book character of the same name. The show faced development challenges and was rumored to be canceled multiple times over the past few years. However, it has recently been confirmed that the show is still in production and has added a notable cast member.
According to Deadline, Byron Bowers, known for his roles in ‘The Chi’ and ‘Lady in the Lake,’ has joined the show, although his role remains undisclosed.
That, however, doesn’t stop us from speculating about which character he might play. With much of the main cast already announced and Wonder Man being a relatively obscure character, the pool of possible roles for Byron is limited.
He could be portraying Sanford Williams, Wonder Man’s father and a fierce competitor of Stark Industries. Sanford’s death catalyzes Simon’s downfall and...

‘Wonder Man’ is just one more in line of upcoming MCU live-action shows. The show is based on the comic book character of the same name. It was in development hell for quite some time, and it was rumored to be canceled several times over the last couple of years. Paul Walter Hauser is one of the busiest actors in Hollywood, and one of his many (and I mean many) upcoming projects is a Chris Farley biopic. Stepping into the shoes of the iconic comedian is no small task, but Hauser told Variety that he’s been “practicing to play Chris Farley my entire life.“
Hauser has played a handful of real-life people throughout his career, including Shawn Eckhardt in I, Tonya, Richard Jewell in Richard Jewell, and Larry Hall in Black Bird, but Farley is by far the most well-known, which makes Hauser’s task more difficult.
“Everybody’s going to judge the crap out of the movie and have very passionate, hard-line opinions. I’m not worried about playing Chris because I know I’m going to approach it with a lot of love and effort,” Hauser said. “At the end of the day, all you can do...
