Tubi continues to be the gift that keeps giving this holiday season as another film is heading to the free streaming service in the new year. This release emerged during the horror remake craze of the 2000s and is actually better than most that were being cranked out at the time. With a memorable cast, solid direction, and some decent scares up its sleeve, the 2010 remake of The Crazies will be one to revisit once it hits the streaming service.
The Crazies is scheduled to land on Tubi on January 1. As you all know, Tubi is a free ad-supported streaming service that has been gaining more and more traction as other platforms continue raising their prices. As of May 2024, Tubi reportedly had 80 million active monthly users, which has likely increased since those figures were reported. This means that millions of users will get a chance to revisit (or get to...

There’s a solid chance this month’s edition of “Revenge of the Remakes” ends up as one of my favorite column entries. George A. Romero’s The Crazies and Breck Eisner’s The Crazies inspire an exceptional case study about the peaceful coexistence between remakes and originals. Both filmmakers choose unique perspectives when dooming small-town America, even though the early 1970s and dawning 2010s validate eerily similar conspiracy paranoias. Stacking these Trixie-toxin thrillers back-to-back validates why remakes aren’t here to piss all over your safe, swaddling nostalgia blankets. Remakes aren’t the enemy — they’re a golden opportunity.
Romero’s The Crazies could only accomplish so much as a commentary against bureaucratic incompetence given the $270K budget. It benefits from a facelift, much like how Wes Craven’s The Hills Have Eyes reaches its full potential as a bloodthirsty 2000s revamp. That’s not a shot at legends...

The French actor plays a widow befriended by Chloë Grace Moretz’s waitress in Neil Jordan’s enjoyably preposterous psychological thriller
Isabelle Huppert was enjoyably outrageous in Paul Verhoeven’s Elle in 2016, and on the face of it, this is similar material: a psychological suspense thriller with hints of Fatal Attraction and Single White Female, written by Ray Wright and directed by Neil Jordan. The element of ridiculousness – arguably not just allowable but vital for this sort of film – is supplied by the always watchable Huppert, though she arguably goes a tad too far with one fit of crockery-smashing, table-splintering rage in a restaurant.
Chloë Grace Moretz plays Frances, a young woman in New York working as a waitress and sharing an improbably huge apartment with her friend Erica (Maika Monroe). Frances is lonely and depressed because her mother has just died. But one day she finds an expensive-looking bag...

The second weekend of “How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World” and the debut of “Tyler Perry’s A Madea Family Funeral” are in a race too close to call for the box office crown, with each estimated to bring in about $25 million.
Should estimates hold, the number will mark a 53% decline for “How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World,” which took in $55 million over its opening weekend. It’s totaled $291 million worldwide, including $74 million Stateside.
“Tyler Perry’s A Madea Family Funeral,” which is hitting 2,442 theaters, earned $9.2 million on Friday — above earlier tracking estimates and leading studios to reevaluate their weekend estimate to the $23 million to $25 million range.
The film heralds the end of Tyler Perry’s beloved Madea character, which dates back to his 1999 play “I Can Do Bad All By Myself.” It marks the 11th installment in Lionsgate’s franchise, with “Madea Goes to Jail...

We spoke with the director of The Crying Game and Interview with the Vampire about returning to the big screen.
French legend Isabelle Huppert is unleashed in Greta, in which she plays the title character: a desperate, lonely but unfortunately not-all-there woman seeking companionship and finding it, at least initially, with Frances (Chloe Grace Moretz), a waitress who recently moved into her friend’s (Maika Monroe) New York City loft and is grieving the loss of her mother.
When Frances finds Greta’s lost purse on the subway, she dutifully returns it to the woman at her Brooklyn apartment and they strike up a friendship. But the more Frances finds out about Greta, the less she wants to be around her -- a state of affairs that the increasingly unstable Greta will go to any length to change.

Chicago – Admittedly, horror films are not my thing. I find them redundant, pandering and more reliant on gore rather than story. “Greta” is somewhat of a thriller horror film, about an older lady stalker preying on a younger New York City woman, but it had both a seen-it-before and unreliable plot.
Rating: 2.5/5.0
It is directed by Neil Jordan, of “The Crying Game” and “Michael Collins” fame, and he did precisely cast the film, which helps it. Isabelle Huppert is the creepy older lady and child-actor-in-transition Chloë Grace Moretz is the young stalkee, and they are game to deliver – but the story has the same old jump scares, a hidden room and lame motivation problems. And man, the plot holes! It’s New York City and I know that crimes are underreported, but I think if the police were involved (as they are here) addresses would be written down. But for the sake of this plot,...

Neil Jordan's Greta, the one where Isabelle Huppert stalks Chloe Grace Moretz, is just campy enough to almost work. Almost.
No good deed goes unpunished, and no sweet kindness in a Hollywood thriller can be anything other than a snare of malevolent intentions. Such were the traps laid by Kathy Bates in Misery, Jennifer Jason Leigh in Single White Female, and even the bunny hoppin’ mad Glenn Close, who should’ve never been ignored in Fatal Attraction. Thus Greta emerges from the perpetually underlit New York streets that are conveniently empty of people and witnesses. Isabelle Huppert and director Neil Jordan seek to add a maternal extinct to these well-worn cinematic hunting grounds, but perhaps they should’ve also brought a tent to go with their sinister binoculars, because there’s nothing here but a lot of camp.

It’s irresistible whenever Isabelle Huppert plays someone dangerous (see her Oscar-nominated role in Elle). As the title character in the English-language Greta, a thriller directed with mirth and malice by the Irish provocateur Neil Jordan, the great French actress is up to demented, delicious mischief. And Chloë Grace Moretz, doing nice with just the right hint of naughty, plays the innocent who’s encounter with Huppert’s mysterious Greta will change her life … and definitely not for the better. Intrigued? How could you not be?

Neil Jordan has been busy working in the land of TV for the past few years but he's returning to the big screen in 2019 with Greta.

The trailer for Greta has been released and it starts off really innocent. However, that calm feeling doesn't last very long and it's replaced with terrifying madness instead. The movie stars Isabelle Huppert and Chloe Grace Moretz, each looking like they give stellar performances through the suspense. Neil Jordan directed and co-wrote Greta with Ray Wright and it hits theaters early next year after being bought for $6 million at the Toronto Film Festival during an all-night auction this past fall.
Neil Jordan was attracted to the idea of Greta because it wasn't about "vampires and it wasn't about demons and monsters who lived for 2,000 years in a dark hole under the earth." After watching the trailer, there definitely are not any demons or vampires, but that doesn't make the villain any less evil. With the exception of “Lady Bird” director Greta Gerwig, for whom the slightly antiquated yet worldly sounding moniker nicely reinforces her hipster brand, it seems hardly anyone is called Greta these days. You hear “Greta,” and the mind already starts to paint a picture, conjuring someone from another generation, perhaps an escapee from one of those countries on the wrong side of World War II, even as it still leaves much to the imagination. The great Isabelle Huppert plays a woman named Greta in director Neil Jordan’s thriller of the same name, and while this unforgettable weirdo doesn’t crack the pantheon of the actress’s 10 best roles, it’s likely to become the one for which she is best known in the U.S.
With “Greta,” Huppert has a chance to reinvent her reputation overseas, to build on the fact that there’s an entire audience for whom...

Exclusive: After an all-night auction in Toronto, Focus Features is finalizing a big deal for Greta, a foray into elevated genre by writer/director Neil Jordan with Chloe Grace Moretz and Isabelle Huppert. The auction was feverish, with Netflix, Lionsgate and Neon also bidding, but Focus stalked the stalker tale hardest. I’m hearing the result is a $6 million deal for North America, Australia and China. And the promise of a splash release next year. All this came following a Thursday evening first screening where the picture played through the roof. Universal previously bought UK, so they were already familiar with the film and now can give the film a coordinated release across all English speak territories, save for South Africa. The auction ended after Jordan sat with each bidder to hear their pitches on how they would release the film.

It’s the score that finally gives it away, after an airless first 15 minutes in which it seems like perhaps Neil Jordan — “Crying Game” and “Michael Collins” and “Butcher Boy” Neil Jordan! — has finally lost it and taken Isabelle Huppert and Chloe Grace Moretz along for the ride. It opens as a stilted, awkward drama, complete with the always-delightful Maika Monroe giving literal voice to what appears to be the film’s obvious theme — and then it takes a surprising flip.
Give thanks to the overwrought instrumental cue from composer Javier Navarrete: This is meant to be campy, a B-movie in disguise. The tension-filled strings cut in first, horror-movie music that wouldn’t be out of place in a “Conjuring” film, and then we see what they’re meant to highlight: Huppert, blithely flipping through Facebook to mine information about her latest prey. Almost every movie by Irish writer-director Neil Jordan has the air of a fable about it, though it's never a bedtime story you'd want to tell your children. The emotional aches and ardent eroticism in his kind of Grimm fairy tale are decidedly mature, though you usually have to dig through some puerility to get to them. This is certainly the case with Greta, which Jordan co-wrote with Ray Wright, and which is his first feature directorial credit since 2012's lady vampire fantasia Byzantium.

30 Days of Night and Hard Candy director David Slade is set to direct a psychological thriller called The Widow, which was written by The Crazies screenwriter, Ray Wright.
The story "centers on a young woman who befriends a lonely widow only to discover that their encounter was not a coincidence."
Slade has been attached to various projects over the years such as Daredevil, Villain, Matched and Coward. We know that Daredevil isn't happening, but I'm not sure what's going on with any of those other movies he's been attached to. There's been no new updates on them since the initial announcements.
I think Slade is a talented director, so I hope we get to see a new movie from him soon. The movie is set up at Vendome, and CEO/Producer Philippe Rousselet had this to say in a statement,
We are thrilled to be working on this piece with David.

Though he’s known for films like The Twilight Saga: Eclipse and Hard Candy, director David Slade has been spending his time in the world of television lately. He directed the pilot for Awake, he’s helmed three episodes of the Mads Mikkelsen starring Hannibal and has also taken a stab at an episode of Breaking Bad. Now, the director is returning to the big screen as THR reports that he’s on board to step behind the camera for The Widow, a psychological thriller from Vendom Pictures, who produced and financed Source Code.
Penned by Ray Wright (The Crazies, Case 39), the film follows “a young woman who befriends a lonely widow only to discover that their encounter was not a coincidence.” No casting has been announced just yet but the search for a lead actress is underway and Slade is hoping to start shooting later this year.

David Slade, the man behind Hard Candy, 30 Days Of Night, Twilight Saga: Eclipse and the Hannibal pilot, will be taking on The Widow.
The film, produced by Vendome Pictures, is written by Ray Wright. The script is described as a “…psychological thriller centers on a young woman who befriends a lonely widow only to discover that their encounter was not a coincidence.” Based on that synopsis, I can’t say I’m too enthused, but Slade’s Hannibal pilot was brilliant, and I’m sure I’ll check this out.
