Developers of the UK’s Marlow Film Studios are planning to appeal the rejection of planning permission of the £750m project, which counts Sam Mendes, Pippa Harris, James Cameron and Paul Greengrass among its backers, with the team behind the studios “confident of the strength of our case”.

It started with the conspicuous TV news crews. “I get out of my car and see five media vans with the dishes and everything. It was weird. It’s very different than last year. There are reporters everywhere,” so relayed one Sun Valley attendee, speaking anonymously to The Hollywood Reporter for a July 1999 news item in the trade daily.
Until then, investment banker Herb Allen’s exclusive “summer camp for moguls” was said to be (mostly) free of large numbers of reporters roaming about asking executives outside the Idaho conference for quotes or looking for deal gossip. There were few of the candid images of Patagonia-fleeced execs — name tag and sunglasses on, to-go coffee cup in hand, warily eying a photographer — that now litter Getty Images annually, to be reused for M&a chatter or eye-popping salary disclosure items.

With a running time of 96 minutes, Frank Marshall’s Rather, a documentary about the life and times of Dan Rather, is premiering at this year’s Tribeca Film Festival opposite Luke Korem’s Milli Vanilli, a 106-minute documentary about the life and times of Milli Vanilli. I know that both documentaries exist in their own vacuums and the comparison is apples to rutabagas, but I’m still confident in saying this: A definitive documentary about Dan Rather is going to require more time to properly tell its story than a definitive documentary about Milli Vanilli.
In its home stretch, Rather mentions that for a young generation weaned on social media, Dan Rather is an amusingly cantankerous Twitter truth-teller, but those new fans have very little awareness that he was once a revered (and briefly disgraced) journalist and broadcast nightly news anchor. Leaving aside that those Rather-adoring whelps similarly don’t...

No reason was provided for the cancellation of the awards, but they will return in 2022, the BAFTA said.

Lance Heflin, most known for producing various America’s Most Wanted iterations and 48 Hours, has died.
The producer’s wife, Jan Evans and sons Patrick and Walker, confirmed Heflin’s death on Facebook. His family shared that Heflin died Sunday, November 15 and that his death was not connected to the Covid-19 virus.
“Lance was special to each of us in his own way, bringing joy and laughter to our lives,” the Facebook post from Heflin’s family read.
Born in Independence, Missouri on November 21, 1952, Heflin started his producing career with the TV series 48 Hours in 1988. The CBS series, created by Howard Stringer, highlighted various true crime stories and shocking criminal cases. Heflin served as a producer on 48 Hours until 1989.
1994 marked the beginning of his work for America’s Most Wanted. Like 48 Hours, the Fox crime series highlighted dangerous crime stories and featured interviews with fugitives, witnesses and victims.

George Schweitzer remembers the time he had to break the news to CBS founder William S. Paley that the Tiffany Network had struck a promotional deal … with the not-so-Tiffany department store chain Kmart.
“I was scared to death,” says Schweitzer, the CBS marketing head who officially retires on April 15. “He was the chairman emeritus at that time, but he was still coming to the office and was a spiritual and superhero presence. I told him, ‘I value and appreciate the Tiffany Network, but in order to get more viewers, we’re doing this exciting new promotion with a retailer, Kmart.’ And he kind of looked at me quizzically like, gosh, obviously he’s never been to Kmart!”
But Paley gave his blessing — “and I ran out of there as fast as I could. Because he was a businessman and a showman, he got it.”

Perhaps it is telling us something about the history of the film industry that Denzel Washington, last night’s highly deserving honoree for the 47th AFI Life Achievement Award, is only the third African American to ever receive it, and before Morgan Freeman was honored in 2011, Sidney Poitier in 1992 was the only person of color on the AFI list. Of course careers like two-time Oscar winner Washington’s are increasingly rare, but as evidenced by tributes from the stage by the likes of Chadwick Boseman, Michael B. Jordan, Mahershala Ali, and Jamie Foxx, there can be no question Washington won’t be the last African American so honored considering those his career has clearly inspired. It seemed entirely appropriate that Jennifer Hudson came out mid-show to sing “A Change Is Gonna Come”, and received a rousing standing ovation when it was over.

“Designing Women” creator Linda Bloodworth-Thomason accused ousted CBS chief Les Moonves of sidelining her career for seven years in an guest column published by The Hollywood Reporter Wednesday.
In the piece titled “Designing Women’ Creator Goes Public With Les Moonves War: Not All Harassment Is Sexual,” Bloodworth-Thomason said Moonves — who resigned late Sunday from CBS, following a second wave of sexual misconduct accusations that came out that morning in another New Yorker piece penned by Ronan Farrow — changed her future at the network. She channeled her “finest Julia Sugarbaker” to tell him off.
Bloodworth-Thomason also calls out Moonves for misogynistic behavior and recounts one incident where “a famous actress” was “coming off the cancellation of her iconic detective show” and pitching a new one to Moonves when “he informed her that she was too old to be on his network.”

Hollywood’s elite turned out Thursday night at the Dolby Theatre, home of the Oscars, to pay tribute to George Clooney, this year’s American Film Institute Life Achievement Award recipient. Faces in the crowd included Netflix’s Ted Sarandos, CBS’ Leslie Moonves and Paramount’s Jim Gianopulos, just to name a few.
Diane Keaton, last year’s AFI honoree, took the stage early to marvel at Clooney’s distant relationship with former president Abraham Lincoln and rib him over that “Killer Tomatoes” sequel he’s never quite lived down. Laura Dern remembered cutting her teeth with Clooney in failed horror project “Grizzly II: The Concert.” Jimmy Kimmel, returning to the Dolby stage for the first time since the 90th annual Academy Awards in March, regaled with stories of “rascal” Clooney’s infamous practical jokes, which have apparently included sending packages to Brad Pitt labeled “the porn that you ordered.
