The Atlanta City Council has settled a wrongful death lawsuit with the family of Rayshard Brooks — a Black man shot and killed by a white police officer in 2020 — for 1 million, The New York Times reports.
The settlement comes three months after a special prosecutor cleared Garret Rolfe, as well as his partner that day, Devin Brosnan, of any wrongdoing. The Atlanta City Council, despite settling with Brooks’ widow and estate, also found the officers’ use of deadly force to be reasonable.

Larry Fessenden’s Depraved is a do-it-yourself Frankenstein adaptation that surges with the filmmaker’s passion for profession, material, and genre. Brooklyn warehouse districts and Manhattan’s underbelly play backdrop to a retelling steeped in its own mad scientifics. An “indie” stitched together by graverobber prosthetic effects, pop-savvy hallucinations of firing synapses, and “man or monster” duplicity rooted in Mary Shelley’s thematic prose but adaptive to relevant social climates. Empathy and tragedy befall what we’ve discovered to be the faulted human condition; ghastly designs merely a metaphor. As history repeats and civilization progresses, so does cinematic culture – with Fessenden on the forefront of depicting how to do so (on a shoestring budget) correctly.
Alex Breaux stars as Adam, a laboratory (Gowanus loft) creation at the hands of ex-military field surgeon Henry (David Call). Adam’s brain locks away his previous life – in a different body – and as Henry...

Hell-bent upon finding evidence of ancient monsters in the modern world (often by exploring how they continue to be reflected in the raw stuff of human nature), Larry Fessenden launched his filmmaking career with a Frankenstein story, and he’s been working his way back to the subject ever since. Traces of Mary Shelley’s mad science can be found in many of the low-budget horror movies that his Glass Eye Pix has produced since 1985, and they’re even more apparent in the ones that he’s directed: From the ecological hubris of “The Last Winter” to the monster-is-us mythicism of “Wendigo” and the selfishness that percolates beneath all of his narratives and bubbled to the surface in “Beneath,” each of his features has dissected a severed limb from Shelley’s foundational story.
With “Depraved” — which is perhaps both his least expensive and most ambitious movie — Fessenden sews his entire body of work together.

From the Press Release:
Award-winning writer/director Matthew Garrett (Beating Hearts) presents a trilogy of thematically connected stories as gruesome as they are tragic and heartfelt.
- Darcy Miller is "Ellie," a damaged teenage girl harboring a terrible secret. Through the course of one traumatic day, we learn what led this innocent girl down a path of self-destruction from which there is no return.

Morris County, the feature length anthology film directed by Matthew Garrett is not easy to categorize - and that is one of its strengths. It's a drama - but the stories venture into such dark, bitter, raw, and rattling territory, the film is custom built more for horror fans than fans of conventional dramas. At the same time, horror fans who gravitate toward a typical mainstream flavor of the genre may find Morris County a little too daring, somber, and unflinching for their tastes. What I admire most about the film is that it refuses to use the cookie cutter. Instead, writer/director Garrett let the film evolve into its own unique beast - and for that, at the very least, Morris County deserves your attention.
Given the nonconforming nature of this film, it's easy to see why finding appropriate distribution for Morris County (which has been complete for some...

Special Mention: Sightseers
Directed by Ben Wheatley
Written by Steve Oram and Alice Lowe
UK, 2012
This bloody, satirical road trip comedy is by no means as great as Terrence Mallick’s Badlands, but it is truly unique, strange, disquieting, and uncomfortably funny. Ben Wheatley is one of the most exciting genre filmmakers working in the industry today and has a talent for coaxing naturalistic, improvisational performances from his actors. Here, Wheatley is working for the first time from someone else’s script. Sightseers was written by TV acting and writing duo Alice Lowe and Steve Oram, with input from Wheatley’s longtime collaborator Amy Jump. In Sightseers, they achieve the relatively rare feat of striking the right balance between sharply observed characterization and jet-black humour. Sightseers was pitched as an unsold TV pilot, which was rejected by every UK broadcaster for being too dark. It isn’t quite horror, but...

Matthew Garrett is a director who hit the ground running with his first short film Ellie (2006), an unsettling movie that gathered much praise when it made the film festival rounds. His second film, the suspenseful and enigmatic Beating Hearts (2010), won Best Short Film at the Boston Underground Film Festival before it found a home here at FEARnet (click here to watch it). Garrett's first feature film is an anthology called Morris County, slated for release later this year. Garrett kindly took some time to discuss with FEARnet his past, present, and future as a film director. FEARnet: What inspired the story of your first film, Ellie? Garrett: It's difficult to discuss the news story that inspired the film without giving away part of the ending, but I will say that the themes of self-destruction, sexual abuse, and the inherent hypocrisy of organized religion were definitely on my mind. What events...

“Beneath” is about a group of friends who take a rowboat across the lake only to be attacked by a flesh-eating fish. But, it may seem that the real monsters may be on the boat as they fight for survival.
Latino-Review had an exclusive interview earlier this month with director Larry Fessenden on this horror project, which is described as homage to “Jaws.” We discussed various details about “Beneath” ranging from the script to the creation of the monster. And, we talked about his involvement in the upcoming movies of “Jug Face” and Lionsgate’s “You’re Next.”
“Beneath” is currently being played on Chiller TV and available on VOD.

Kane Hodder and Bill Moseley star in Old 37 (which we last reported on here) as Jon Roy and Darryl, demented siblings who operate the titular ambulance, intercepting 911 calls and picking up accident victims to inflict further pain upon them. Christian Winters is directing from a script by Paul Travers, who is also producing with Carrie Alton, Dayna Ghiraldi and Evan Greenhill, with Steven Beer executive-producing and Brian Spears and Peter Gerner providing the copious makeup FX. Shooting wraps this week on Long Island locations (including a very impressive “kill room” set); look for more coverage of Old 37 soon!

It's been around a year since last there was anything to report on Old 37, but with the passage of time good things can come. Case in point: This unique little slasher flick finally began shooting on November 17th in Long Island, New York.
The film stars Kane Hodder (Friday the 13th, Hatchet) and Bill Moseley (Texas Chainsaw 3D, The Devil’s Rejects, House of 1000 Corpses) as twisted brothers working together to exact revenge on careless teen drivers who may be responsible for their mother’s hit and run death.
The star cast includes Brandi Cyrus, (Hannah Montana, Zoey 101), Caitlin Harris (Secret Life of the American Teenager), Olivia Alexander (Attack of the 50-Foot Cheerleader, Killer Eye), the face of Abercrombie & Fitch Maxwell Zagorski, Ben Schneider, Mindy White (States, Lydia), a performance by 6-piece Australian band Sheppard and more.

Fango got the scoop that Bill Moseley, who previously shared the screen with Hodder in The Devil’S Rejects and Fallen Angels, will play his brother in Old 37 (which we last reported on here). Directed and edited by Christian Winters from a script by Paul Travers (also producing with Carrie Alton, Dayna Ghiraldi and Evan Greenhill), the movie sees the twisted siblings posing as paramedics, intercepting 911 calls and picking up victims in the titular vintage ambulance. The cast also includes Brandi Cyrus (Miley’s sister), Caitlin Harris, Olivia Alexander, Maxwell Zagorski, Ben Schneider and Mindy White. Creating the carnage is Brian Spears, whose many credits include I Sell The Dead, Stake Land, The Innkeepers, V/H/S and the upcoming Hellbenders and We Are What We Are.

Variety reports Lionsgate has acquired the latest from director J.T. Petty, who last wowed with his excellent horror/western The Burrowers. Hellbenders stars Clifton Collins Jr., Clancy Brown, Dan Fogler and Robyn Rikoon, and sees the Hellbound Saints of Brooklyn Parish, a raucous team of smoking, drinking and demon killing men and women of the cloth who come in handy when extreme exorcism is needed.
The 3D horror/comedy recently premiered as part of Midnight Madness at the Toronto International Film Festival. This has got to be one of the coolest zombie events we've ever seen. Sure zombie crawls are great, we all love them. But a horrific couple decided to raise the bar and host the first ever Ooze Cruise. A seven-day zombified adventure at sea!
Brought to you by Captain Cruella of the Carnivorous Cadavers and award-winning horror blogger Brian Spears, the Ooze Cruise looks to be a zombie fan's dream come true. Participants will be treated to costume contests, zombie crawls, zombie movie nights, a zombie variety show and plenty more excitement over the course of the seven-day event.
The Ooze Cruise departs from Cape Liberty-Bayonne, NJ on January 6th and will shamble the seas through Orlando, Nassau and Coco Cay, returning on January 13th. What better way to beat the winter blues? Not that zombies are that susceptible to winter blues, but why take a chance? Nassau will sound damn good in January.

Recently Dread Central was lucky enough to travel to the quiet town of Canterbury, Connecticut, to visit the set of the upcoming Chiller original production Dead Souls. The film, scheduled to hit the television airwaves in October, was directed by Colin Theys and boasts the one and only Bill Moseley amongst the impressive cast.
Upon arriving at the set, one thing was abundantly clear: The production team that sought to find a location to be used as a haunted house was incredibly effective. The abandoned farmhouse used in Dead Souls was incredibly creepy. Add to that the fact that a scraggly bearded Bill Moseley was sitting on a rock outside the barn as you walked up the driveway, and the creep factor of this place goes through the roof!
Moseley spoke on working with the Dead Souls cast and crew. "They really know their stuff," Moseley said. "I think Colin [Theys] is a really cool director.

A new feature from S&Man and The Burrowers’ J.T. Petty is always an exciting event, and we’re very much looking forward to his new take on the possession sub-genre, Hellbenders. Fango spoke to the film’s makeup FX artist, Brian Spears, who dropped some hints about what to expect from the flick.
“It’s about rogue priests who fight evil and do exorcisms—sort of like The Hangover meets The Exorcist,” Spears, who previously contributed FX to Petty’s on-line Burrowers prequel Blood Red Earth, tells us. “I guess you would call it a horror/comedy; when I read the script, it read straight, but it’s definitely funny and off-kilter. When the horror comes, it’ll be horrific, but there are also lighter moments.”

Chicago – New York filmmaker Joe Maggio is fascinated by the pursuit of redemption, particularly in stories featuring characters who may not entirely be worthy of it. His 2001 debut feature “Virgil Bliss” followed a man fresh out of prison as he attempted to build a new life. Maggio’s 2008 drama “Paper Covers Rock” told the story of a suicidal mother who fights to maintain custody of her daughter.
The darkly satirical thriller “Bitter Feast” marks Maggio’s darkest tale to date. Redemption hardly seems possible for vitriolic food blogger Jt Franks (Joshua Leonard), as he finds himself held hostage by Peter Gray (James LeGros), the self-righteous yet deranged celebrity chef whose restaurant he panned. Gray acquires delicious revenge by forcing Franks to cook various dishes to perfection…or else. Cody Blue Snider, who's considered an auteur for "Generation Naught" due to his hands-on approach to all aspects of production, dropped us a line today with the poster art and some early details on his new short film "All That Remains". He's in the process of cutting a trailer now so keep your eyes peeled for that soon as well.

I’d already made three feature films - Virgil Bliss (2001); Milk + Honey (2003); Paper Covers Rock (2008) - all of them indie character dramas, when Larry Fessenden of Glasseye Pix called and asked me if I had any horror scripts I’d be interested in making on a low budget. I’m not a horror guy. I mean, I love movies and there are certainly many horror films that I’ve enjoyed, but the thought of actually making a horror film seemed a bit of a stretch. That said, I’d never turn up the opportunity to make a movie, so I lied, said I had a script that needed a week of polishing. For the next seven days I wrote furiously, Glasseye accepted the first draft and my journey into the world of genre filmmaking was underway. Below I detail the single greatest tip I would pass along to anyone interested...

This Tuesday, March 30th, is the long awaited DVD/Blu-ray release date of Glenn McQuaid's I Sell the Dead, and our trilogy of interviews with its cast and crew continues with the one -- the only -- Angus Scrimm, who portrays the character of Dr. Vernon Quint in the film.
Elaine Lamkin: Thank you for taking time to do this interview with me, Angus. First question – how did you find yourself playing Dr. Quint in I Sell the Dead? What was the attraction? And how would you describe the good doctor, whose exit from the film is both hilarious and well-deserved?
Angus Scrimm: In January, 2008, this ruddy-cheeked Irish fellow with a perpetual twinkle in his eye turned up at the Burbank, California, studio where Larry Fessenden was filming the infamous rant I contributed to Jim McKenney's Automatons DVD "extras." Undeterred by what he saw, he offered me the role of Dr.

Release Date: Aug. 7Director/Writer: Glenn McQuaidStarring: Dominic Monaghan, Ron Perlman, Larry FessendenCinematographer: Richard LopezStudio/Run Time: IFC, 85 mins.
I Sell the Dead arrives lovingly crafted for a small but loyal brand of moviegoers, the kind who best appreciate their comedy blackened to a crisp—with a few corpses thrown in for good measure. The charmingly no-budget feature debut of Glenn McQuaid, the movie follows a 19th-century grave robber (Lost’s Dominic Monaghan) as he awaits the guillotine and recounts his life story to a priest (played by Ron Perlman, in case there was any doubt what kind of movie this is). Mist-shrouded and whiskey-soaked tales of the dead and undead follow with cheerful gallows humor and estimable makeup effects by rising genre stars Pete Gerner and Brian Spears.

Rapper-turned-filmmaker R.A. Thorburn, a.k.a. “The Rugged Man” and the producer/co-writer of Frank Henenlotter’s Bad Biology, dropped Fango a line with details and some gruesome set photos (see ’em below) from his first feature as a director. Titled God Take, God Give, it’s “an insane mockumentary,” according to Thorburn, based on the life of his father, Staff Sgt. John A. Thorburn.
“He was a highly decorated war hero who survived many government-funded secret missions in Vietnam,” he tells us, “only to come home affected by Agent Orange, which caused serious complications with some of his children and grandchildren. The scene pictured is based on some of the wilder stories surrounding his life; it was once rumored that he escaped a mental hospital and went on a killing spree. I basically reimagined those rumors as an ’80s splatter movie; it’s basically my father going nuts while...

Concluding our interviews with the filmmakers behind three upcoming horror films being co-produced by Larry Fessenden’s Glass Eye Pix and Mpi Media Group (start tracking back through the previous stories here), we now come to Bitter Feast and writer/director Joe Maggio. Although Maggio, unlike his Glass Eye stablemates, is a newcomer to horror, he’s an established indie filmmaker with the well-received Virgil Bliss, Milk And Honey and Paper Covers Rock to his credit, “and I’m very excited to be working with Larry and Glass Eye,” he tells Fango.
Bitter Feast will be the first of the Glass Eye/Mpi trio to go before the cameras; shooting begins late this month, and Maggio explains the storyline: “James LeGros [from Phantasm II and Fessenden’s The Last Winter] plays a mad chef who kidnaps a food blogger whom he believes has torpedoed his career. The blogger is played by Joshua Leonard, who you may know from The Blair Witch Project...

Continuing our report on the upcoming trilogy of horror co-productions between Larry Fessenden’s Glass Eye Pix and Mpi Media Group (see our chat with James Felix McKenney on Hypothermia here), we next turn our attention to Jim Mickle’s Stake Land. Fright fans have been waiting for Mickle’s next shocker ever since he broke out with his impressive debut movie Mulberry Street a couple of years back, and Stake Land, on which he once again teams with actor/co-writer Nick Damici, sounds like it’ll be a worthy follow-up.
“It’s an apocalyptic vampire Western,” Mickle tells Fango. “It’s told through the eyes of a young boy who is taken under the wing of Nick, who plays a brutal, solitary ghoul hunter in a world populated by grungy creatures—these are not the pretty True Blood vampires. It’s kind of a new Depression; politics have fallen and the economy has fallen.

Wrong Turn 3 director Declan O’Brien will be previewing his new Fox DVD splatter sequel at the fast-approaching East Coast edition of Fangoria’s Weekend of Horrors, to be held June 5-7 at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center (11th Avenue between 34th and 39th Streets) in New York City. O’Brien (pictured below with friend), the director of the Sci Fi Channel original movies Rock Monster, Monster Ark and Cyclops, will debut exclusive clips from Wrong Turn 3 (about another group of lost travelers facing off against inbred hillbilly maniacs) at the convention on Sunday.
In addition to his directing chores, O’Brien has also scripted Harpies, The Snake King and Savage Planet for Sci Fi. Stop by this site again over the next couple of days as we begin posting the full schedules (auditorium panels and film programs) for the Fango show.
