Dir: Matt Sobel. Starring: Naomi Watts, Cameron Crovetti, Nicholas Crovetti, Peter Hermann, Crystal Lucas-Perry, Jeremy Bobb. 15, 91 minutes.
Goodnight Mommy was a 2014 Austrian horror that came and went with a small murmur of excitement, largely due to the twist hidden in its final act. Two kids, Lukas and Elias, bearing the feral stares and thin faces of baby bogeymen, arrive home one afternoon to find their mum back from the hospital. She’s undergone a cosmetic procedure and her head is mummified in bandages. But dear mother is so strange now: she refuses to acknowledge Lukas, and grows cruel and violent when the boys disobey her. Soon, they become convinced she’s been replaced by an imposter.
The film, directed by Veronika Franz and Severin Fiala, defined itself both through its cruelty and its sparseness – a cousin to the works of fellow Austrian provocateur Michael Haneke, with a dash of The Shining’s alienating architecture.

Here we go again, but not in the way you might be expecting. The 2014 horror hit "Goodnight Mommy," is getting an American reboot and we now have the film's first trailer.
The sneak peek for the Prime Video original showcases Naomi Watts in the title matriarchal role. Much like the first film, the movie follows a mother reuniting with her twin sons following a cosmetic surgery that requires her to wear bandages around her entire face and head. Slowly, the boys start to suspect their mother, well, isn't who she says she is, and they join forces to unmask her and find out the truth.
The remake stars Watts alongside Cameron and Nicholas Crovetti, while "Younger" star Peter Hermann rounds out the cast of the film. "Take Me to the River" director Matt Sobel helmed the film from a script by Kyle Warren, who is known for his work on Fox's short-lived "Lethal Weapon" series.

Younger demos are back when they like the pic, as per A24s Everything Everywhere All At Once. Families also, based on Sonic The Hedgehog 2. With CinemaCon opening Monday to set the theatrical table for the rest of 2022 and beyond, NATO chief John Fithian predicts the reluctance of the 35 to 40+ crowd is “definitely going to change.”
“I think the growth is going to come as much from smaller budget films as from blockbusters,” he tells Deadline ahead of the first full-blown confab of exhibitors, studios and indie distributors since Covid. Audiences that have stayed the most at home are “the most excited about coming back out,” he said.

Maria (Susanne Wuest) is jolted awake by a hawk flying straight into the window of her corner office. Only she seems to notice while the rest of her drone-like coworkers type at their keyboards. Where some might have laughed out of shock or disregarded the event as one more example of man’s intellectual superiority over the animal kingdom, Maria sees aspiration. That bird cracked its skull because it was free. It believed itself able to fly anywhere that appeared open and was only thwarted by an anomaly rather than a rule. She bangs her head against the proverbial wall of complacent monotony because she’s accepted her place within a society of exploitation and oppression. Is it better to live without living? Or to die having lived?

What would you do for a habanero-orange compact sport utility vehicle? Blowing as many balloons as possible in one minute seems like an easy enough task, but what about fetching a human earlobe? These are the questions at the heart of “Stanleyville,” or at least they seem to be. In reality, director Maxwell McCabe-Lokos’ debut feature uses the bizarre “platinum-level exclusive contest” at its center as a metaphor for self-actualization — even if achieving it requires more than a little self-destruction along the way. With a firm commitment to its alluringly offbeat premise and a grounding lead performance from Susanne Wuest, this indie oddity is an enjoyable descent into the absurd despite an apparent lack of interest in answering most of the questions it raises.

If a dead ringer for Sparks brother Ron Mael walked up to you at a shopping mall while you were sitting in a massage chair and contemplating the sad inertia of your existence and, with great excitement, announced that you had been chosen from among hundreds of millions of people to participate in a unique competition designed to “probe the very essence of mind-body articulation” — well, you’d probably be willing to entertain his sales pitch. Maria (“Goodnight Mommy” star Susanne Wuest) hangs on every word, as if she’s been waiting to hear them for her entire adult life.
Yes, “Squid Game” essentially started the same way, but the 40-something woman at the heart of Maxwell McCabe-Lokos’ “Stanleyville” doesn’t seem like she’s up to speed on the latest Netflix shows. She was born into one of those deadpan cities that filmmakers always use to satirize the absurdity...

The Volkswagen Tiguan metallic habanero orange compact sports utility vehicle is a nice piece of work. its 17 inch allow wheels, eight speed automatic transition and all-wheel drive make it a nippy little mover, while its sleek bodywork and chrome highlights give it a touch of class – and that’s before we get to the remarkably comfortable black leatherette heated seats, the glass roof, the automatic climate control and the dashboard with built-in touchscreen. It’s really quite a prize – but how far would you you be willing to go to win it?
Maria Barbizan (Susanne Wuest) is not the kind of person who has won very much in life. Though disinclined to be talkative, she hints at a good deal of misfortune in her past. From her tightly bound blond hair to her pale, plain clothes and the way she sits with her knees pressed tightly together, everything about her.

"[It's] like an episode of 'Survivor' for sociopathic miscreants who've inhaled enough helium to induce a psychotic break." OScope Labs has revealed an official trailer for a strange indie comedy from Canada titled Stanleyville, which originally premiered at last year's Fantasia Film Festival. This looks totally wacky and weird, almost even indescribable. A dissatisfied woman abandons her career and her family when she gets the chance to compete in a bizarre and dangerously flawed contest. The prize: a brand new habanero-orange compact SUV. Huh. This seems like it's "Squid Game" mashed up with Yorgos Lanthimos mashed up with "Survivor" or something like that. Starring Susanne Wuest, with Cara Ricketts, Christian Serritiello, George Tchortov, Adam Brown, and Julian Richings. I'm not quite what to make of this film, but I'm certainly intrigued. We at ScreenAnarchy are suckers for a good poster, and certainly the poster for Stanleyville certainly fits that bill. The feature directorial debut of Canadian actor Maxwell McCabe-Lokos has its world premiere at Fantasia this weekend, and this intriguing poster, designed by Aleksander Walijewski, just dropped. Prim and proper Maria Barbizan (Susanne Wuest of Goodnight Mommy) unceremoniously walks away from her boring job, her inept husband, and her obnoxious daughter. Moments later, she is swept up in a bizarre contest alongside a handful of idiosyncratic characters, all competing for the chance to win true enlightenment… and one slightly used habanero-orange compact sport utility vehicle. My thoughts first turn to the use of the bubble in comics as dialogue placement, then to the symbolism of balloons,...

A few years ago, filmmaker László Nemes blew festival audiences away with his Holocaust tale Son of Saul. Starting with an award winning debut at the Cannes Film Festival, the movie more or less swept the awards season, culminating in an Oscar for Best Foreign Language Feature. Nemes was immediately a new name to watch on the international cinema stage. Now, after screening a bit last year, his follow up effort Sunset hits theaters this week. Unfortunately, he’s not able to repeat the success from last time out. This is a definite letdown of an experience and a real big disappointment. Alas. The film is a drama set in Budapest during the year 1913, before World War I would devastate Europe. "At first, the man was believed to be a hiker. Later, his stone age origins were revealed..." Film Movement has debuted a new official Us trailer for Iceman, a stone age survival thriller set in the snowy Ötztal Alps (located on Austria / Italy border). This premiered at the Locarno Film Festival in 2017, and we originally posted a trailer for it back then. This could be described as an early Neolithic man version of The Revenant, about one man who angrily seeks revenge but must first survive the brutal Ötztal Alps. Jürgen Vogel stars as Kelab, with the full cast including Susanne Wuest, André Hennicke, Violetta Schurawlow, Sabin Tambrea, Martin Schneider, and an appearance by Franco Nero. The film uses an early version of the Rhaetic language. This actually looks pretty damn good, with some epic footage and plenty of gnarly beards. Here's the new official Us trailer (+ another poster) for Felix Randau's Iceman,...

Just in time for Christmas comes the heartwarming story of “Perfume,” which follows a half-dozen friends so obsessed with the possibilities of smell that the death of one of them dredges up some extremely unpleasant things about their pasts.
The new series is based on the 1985 Patrick Süskind novel “Perfume,” which was previously adapted into the 2006 Tom Tykwer film “Perfume: The Story of a Murderer,” starring a pre-Bond Ben Whishaw, Alan Rickman, and Dustin Hoffman. This new TV venture brings the original story into a modern context, rather than the 18th-century French environs of the novel.
In updating the historical story, this six-part season also gets a detective show twist, with a group of investigators looking into the death of a singer. What they find is a group of one-time school friends, at least one of whom stumbled into the practice of using human scents as the basis for making a one-of-a-kind fragrance.

"Why are you so sad?" Screen International has unveiled the first official trailer for László Nemes' new film Sunset and my goodness does it looks incredible. This is the next film from the highly acclaimed Hungarian director of the film Son of Saul, and it's set to premiere at the Venice and Toronto Film Festivals this fall. Sunset tells the story of a young girl who grows up to become a strong and fearless woman in Budapest before World War I. Juli Jakab stars as Írisz Leiter, and the cast includes Vlad Ivanov, Susanne Wuest, Björn Freiberg, Levente Molnár, Mónika Balsai, Urs Rechn, Judit Bárdos, and Evelin Dobos. I don't know much about this film yet, but I think it looks extraordinary already, especially because I believe Nemes is a genius (for making Son of Saul). I'll be seeing this in Venice and will have a review up soon after.

Major Crimes alum Raymond Cruz has booked a recurring role opposite Chris O’Dowd and Ray Romano in the second season of Epix’s Get Shorty. The dark comedy from MGM Television is based in part on the 1990 Elmore Leonard bestseller and created for television by Davey Holmes. In Season 2, Miles struggles to reconcile his ambitions as a filmmaker and a family man with his skill set as a career criminal. His progress in Hollywood is jeopardized when the washed-up producer (Romano) with whom he partnered in Season 1 agrees to wear a federal wire. Cruz will play Swayze, the brutal and murderous leader of a Latino prison gang who styles himself after Patrick Swayze, with long, flowing locks of hair and 80s-inspired dance moves. Cruz recently wrapped the sixth and final season of TNT’s Major Crimes. He also has recurred on Better Call Saul and Breaking Bad,...

After easily conquering highly-anticipated sequels Fifty Shades Darker and John Wick 2, Warner Bros.' animated spin-off Lego Batman Movie faced three newcomers in its second weekend at the box office. The animated spin-off will go up against Universal's big budget action epic The Great Wall, starring Matt Damon, Warner Bros.' comedy Fist Fight starring Ice Cube and Charlie Day and 20th Century Fox's A Cure For Wellness starring Dane DeHaan. As expected, The Lego Batman Movie retained its spot atop the box office with a better than expected $34.2 million
While there are certainly many factors that lead to The Lego Batman Movie staying on top of the box office, one of these factors is that it is still playing in hundreds of more theaters than any of these newcomers. The Lego Batman Movie debuted in 4,088 theaters last weekend, which, according to Box Office Mojo, remained unchanged this weekend. reporting...

Now that 2016 has finally ended, you may be filling out some New Year's resolutions, to set some goals for yourself in 2017. Oftentimes, these resolutions go unfulfilled, a theme that is highlighted in a creepy new TV trailer for 20th Century Fox's A Cure For Wellness. Instead of "treating the symptom," this footage suggests that those who really want to improve themselves should "take the cure." While it remains unclear what this actual cure is, it does seem quite terrifying.

2016 was a very good year for studio horror movies, and 2017 is looking like it could be quite nice for horror fans as well. After spending quite some time doing massive, blockbuster movies, director Gore Verbinski is returning to the world of horror with A Cure For Wellness, which is due out early next year. Now, 20th Century Fox has released a brand new, full-length trailer, giving our best look yet at the upcoming horror thriller.
20th Century Fox uploaded the trailer online recently, and unlike the first trailer, this gives us a very good idea of the actual story in A Cure For Wellness. It looks as though this movie will be borrowing more from Martin Scorsese's Shutter Island than The Conjuring, but there are definitely enough moments in this trailer to get horror fans excited. Here is the official synopsis for the movie.

An effective horror story about a woman transformed in more ways than one after she undergoes facial surgery
Hats off to Austria for selecting this increasingly alarming chiller from writer/directors Veronika Franz and Severin Fiala (respectively the partner and nephew of film-maker Ulrich Seidl, who produces) as its foreign language entry for the 88th Academy Awards. Opening with an image of Von Trapp family harmony, Goodnight Mommy finds twin boys (Lukas and Elias Schwarz, both brilliant) playing hide-and-seek in the trees and cornfields around a remote modernist house. When their mother (Susanne Wuest) returns from facial surgery, her bandaged visage hides a changed personality. How do they know it’s really her? Suspicion turns to hostility and worse; by the third act, you’ll be hiding your face in wincing terror.

An idyllic summer at a lakeside house turns nasty horror for two brothers in this gruesome debut from Austrian film-maker Veronika Franz
This icy Euro-arthouse horror from Austrian film-maker Veronika Franz has an American-style title, like Michael Haneke’s Funny Games. The original is Ich Seh Ich Seh, or I See I See, which better captures its theme of twins. Franz makes her debut, co-directing with Severin Fala; she is married to the film’s producer, the renowned and terrifying director Ulrich Seidl, known for his own type of extreme ordeal cinema. This movie had its premiere at last year’s Venice film festival, where I first saw it, and now arrives in the UK, where audiences may want to compare it to early Michael Haneke and Jessica Hausner. The twist ending is worthy of a Hollywood director who can’t be named without giving it away. Elias (Elias Schwarz...
