Season 3 of “Barry” was the dark comedy’s darkest yet, which was achieved in no small part thanks to cinematographer Carl Herse.

If watching the latest season of Barry led you to believe there’s no possible way the title character can keep getting away with everything, well, you’re right.

The HBO pitch-black comedy, focusing on an assassin who can’t manage to escape a life of crime, ended its third season with a sobering finale Sunday. Grasshopper Film has secured the U.S. distribution rights to Maɬni-Towards the Ocean, Towards the Shore, the Sky Hopinka-directed documentary that had its world premiere at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival. It’s slated to screen this month as part of Film at Lincoln Center’s Art of the Real festival before heading to theaters in 2021, followed by a VOD and home video release.

The docu explores the origin of the death myth from the Chinookan people in the Pacific Northwest, Malni (pronounced: moth-nee) and follows two people as they wander through their surrounding nature, the spirit world, and something much deeper inside. Im Global has picked up international rights to Alibaba Pictures’ fantasy romance Once Upon A Time, co-directed by Anthony Molinara and Zhao Xiaoding.

Starring Liu Yifei (White Vengeance) and Yang Yang (I Belonged To You), the film is based on best-selling fantasy novel To The Sky Kingdom and is the first Alibaba Pictures title handled by Im Global.

They sort of have to because, by nature, boxing is usually a slow, cerebral back and forth with only moments of intense explosion. Fictional stories, like Rocky or The Champ, can get away with the over-the-top action but the non-fiction films have a smaller margin for error because the real fights are out there. For years, filmmakers have been getting away with dialing up the action but, in 2011, things aren't as easy. Photo: Paramount Pictures I'd heard David O. Russell's The Fighter was pretty close in terms of being factually accurate when it came to the true story of boxer Micky Ward. However, as Laremy Legel was putting together his top ten of 2010 he called me and we got into a discussion of a film's quality if it's based on a true story, but then fudges the facts. There were a few inaccuracies he came across in doing some online research, but most of what he came up with, we pretty much agreed, was most likely changed for narrative emphasis.

One example of this would be when Ward (Mark Wahlberg) faces Max Mungin as a late replacement early in the film. It is said Mungin outweighs Ward by almost 20 pounds when in actuality the difference was 8.5 pounds and Mungin was only 145 pounds, nowhere...

Then the Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild added their nominations. Then, just last night the Satellite Awards were announced and while they aren't exactly the best indicator of what films are going to do what, they add their own numbers to the formula.
