Horror movie fans are always looking for the next truly terrifying cinematic experience. Of course, not every kind of scare works for every viewer, and some horror subgenres that leave some of the audience paralyzed can fall flat to another part of the audience. While jumpscares feel necessary to some, for example, they completely ruin the experience for others, who prefer well-crafted psychological tension. Yet, in every horror subgenre, what seems to truly push a movie from "scary" into "terrifying" territory for most people is when it makes the audience feel extremely uncomfortable.
Excessive gore naturally causes discomfort, but films that depict oddily specific graphic violence stand out among the vast catalog of bloody horror films out there. Within examples of gore-y films, Martyrs takes the violence to a surrealist extreme, while Angst and Backcountry highly contrast with it for being realistic and based on true events. "It was such an incredible experience working with Zack, and that whole cast and crew was one of the best experiences I've had on set. Once upon a time, Universal was prepping its own Avengers-style cinematic universe featuring their famous classic movie monsters. The studio started making some movies as they planned films that would make up the Dark Universe, and initially positioned Dracula Untold(2014) with star Luke Evans as the first film before officially making Tom Cruise's The Mummy the Iron Man of the Dark Universe. There was a magazine cover featuring an A-list cast who would be headlining films like Bride of Frankensteinand The Invisible Man. But then The Mummy opened in June 2017 and it bombed. Badly. And the brakes were hit on the Dark Universe. However, now it's a streaming hit on Hulu, sitting at number six on the streamer's Top 10 chart.

J.J. Perry’s The Killer Game is a test of endurance. It pushes you to the edge with its stultifying low intelligence, plodding derivativeness and plain awfulness. There’s nothing redeeming about the narrative and direction, plunging into the world of assassins: it’s as deathly dull as it is stubbornly uninspired. Not a thought is spared on etching vivid, specific characterization, or detailing motivations. You wonder what made a titan like Ben Kingsley agree to sign up for this. Probably the check was irresistible.
From the very opening, the film gives it away that it’ll just be another generic trainwreck so overconfident it stretches out into almost two hours despite an absolute lack of substance. The writing is flat, characters shorn of layers, friendships and romance cursory and yet deep it gets tricky to reconcile the weight they gather with the impetuousness of their execution. The film is full of foolish,...

The film that would become The Killer’s Game has been hanging around for roughly three decades now – the first draft having been penned way back in 1995. While it has, perhaps admirably, finally made its way to the screen, the final result might indicate why it took 30 years to get there: the film is a hodgepodge of hitman clichés, cartoonish ultra-violence, and underwritten character drama that emerges both undercooked and endlessly reheated, a forgettable John Wick knock-off.
It’s not for lack of trying. Eventual director J.J. Perry has assembled an all-star cast for his hitman face-off, across the spectrum of hulking hardmen, dependable action stars, and pure thespian talent. But these pieces never cohere into a satisfying whole – the character work is flatly directed and the visuals often dour and desaturated, clashing awkwardly with the outlandish action and video-gamey roster of colourful assassins. While a mid-movie twist lands well, The Killer’s Game...

Universal attempted to make the Dark Universe happen 8 years ago with Tom Cruise's The Mummy, and Wolf Man confirms it's a good thing the cinematic universe failed. The 2025 horror film from director Leigh Whannell is the latest instance of classic Universal Monsters being reinvented for modern audiences. This direction for some iconic creatures was a heavy emphasis of 2017's The Mummy, which starred Tom Cruise in a big-budget, action-driven feature. It was meant to kickstart an entire cinematic universe - known as the Dark Universe - that would bring together Invisible Man, Frankenstein, and more.
The Dark Universe plans were sprawling ahead of The Mummy's release in 2017, including Universal's now infamous photo of Russell Crowe, Javier Bardem, Tom Cruise, Johnny Depp, and Sofia Boutella photoshopped together as a promise of the monster franchise to come. This hope came crashing down in the fallout of The Mummy's release,...

Not every reimagining of The Mummy has been a success for Universal. In 2017, the studio released an action-heavy reboot starring Tom Cruise that flopped in theaters, and is now heading to Hulu next month.
Beginning Feb. 1, Hulu subscribers will be able to stream The Mummy, starring Cruise as a soldier of fortune who accidentally unearths the ancient tomb of entrapped Egyptian princess Ahmanet, played by Kingsman's Sofia Boutella. Released in 2017, The Mummy was intended to be the first installment in the Dark Universe, a proposed cinematic universe that was supposed to be Universal's answer to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, after The Mummy lost Universal roughly $95 million (despite grossing over $400 million worldwide), plans for future Dark Universe entries (like Johnny Depp's The Invisible Man and Javier Bardem's Frankenstein) were scrapped.

After two weeks since making its return, BBC One’s TV series Rogue Heroes Season 2 has already garnered very promising reviews from critics. Prior to the latest installment’s premiere, fans had a two-year waiting period, after the World War II drama had wrapped up Season 1’s 6-episode run on BBC One.
Per review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, Rogue Heroes Season 2 has officially received a perfect Tomatometer score, based on five reviews. As Jack Seale of the Guardian said, “With its sober view of sacrifice and its clever use of extreme adversity to bring out different facets of the male psyche, Rogue Heroes earns its stripes, but be reassured that with all that groundwork in place it is, primarily, a right old romp.” Directed by Stephen Woolfenden from a screenplay written by Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight, the first four episodes of Season 2 are now available for streaming on the BBC iPlayer in the U.

Did you know that the creator of Peaky Blinders has an action-packed war drama with a great cast and perfect reviews? Most Americans don't, unfortunately, because Epix and MGM+ aren't exactly on everyone's radar. But if Rogue Heroes was a Netflix or Prime Video series, it's almost a sure bet that it would be a massive hit here in the States. With the upcoming second season garnering a perfect 100% critics' score on Rotten Tomatoes (just like Season 1), now is a good time to try MGM+ (even if it's for a free trial).

2024 had multiple blockbusters and sequels that were critical and financial successes, yet the year, like any other, had some underwhelming movies. There is no worse feeling for a viewer than seeing a movie they had high hopes for, or thought would be at least decent, turn out to be a disappointment. These films garnered much anticipation due to either a promising IP, an ambitious premise, or the talent involved on and off-screen.
Alas, these once-intriguing movies fell apart for audiences and critics when they were released. There are many reasons why these movies fell below expectations, whether it was questionable storytelling, glaringly obvious CGI, or, if they were part of a franchise, they couldn't create the same magic from previous installments. From Joker: Folie à Deux to Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, the 2024 movie season was occasionally plagued by these letdowns.

2024 was certainly quite an exciting year for movie lovers. The year was full of critical hits like Anora and The Brutalist, as well as box office smashes like Inside Out 2 and Deadpool & Wolverine. All of these films dazzled their audiences, reminding viewers what the movies are all about. Now, with the year in the rearview mirror, many people have begun compiling their rankings of the best movies of 2024; the ones that they felt exceeded expectations, both in terms of their quality and their cultural impact.
Unfortunately, not every movie released in 2024 managed to fully live up to expectations. Plenty of films from the past year ended up coming short of achieving their goals, failing to deliver on what audiences really wanted to see. Whether it be because of poor quality, underwhelming box office performance, or merely failing to understand what their fans actually wanted, these 2024 movies didn't end up...

Universal Pictures owns the rights to many popular titles but also characters. One of its franchises includes the Universal Classic Monsters, which the studio has been producing since 1913, and a new adaptation is being made of one of its most popular characters: The Mummy.
The Mummy tells the story of a mummified ancient Egyptian priest who is accidentally resurrected. The character has seen many adaptations starting 1932's The Mummy, with Boris Karloff, as well as the modern adaptations starring Brendan Fraser between 1999 and 2008, and the failed 2017 film starring Tom Cruise. Blumhouse and Atomic Monster, the newly converged horror producers, will unwrap yet another iconic movie monster. “The Mummy” is coming from Lee Cronin, director of the campy and cult-approved “Evil Dead Rise.”
Cronin will write and direct the project, which has been dated for April 17, 2026, by New Line Cinema.
“This will be unlike any ‘Mummy’ movie you ever laid eyeballs on before. I’m digging deep into the earth to raise something very ancient and very frightening,” Cronin said in a statement.

A little over seven years after the last attempt to reboot the property failed, Blumhouse have revealed they're working on a new Mummy movie. The horror franchise first launched in 1932 and was part of the Universal Classic Monsters collection, with Boris Karloff portraying the titular entity before passing the reins on to Tom Tyler, Lon Chaney Jr. and Eddie Parker. The years since have seen two rebooted versions of The Mummy franchise, beginning with the Brendan Fraser-led movies from Stephen Sommers, which also included the Scorpion King spinoffs, and Tom Cruise's failed 2017 reboot meant to launch the interconnected Dark Universe.

Kingsman fans may still see the end of Harry and Eggsy's story. Franchise lead Taron Egerton recently offered a promising update on Kingsman 3.
More than a month after 20th Century Studios boss Steve Asbell told The Hollywood Reporter that there were "no plans on doing them [more Kingsman movies] anytime soon," Egerton has offered his own thoughts on the franchise's future. While speaking with Screen Rant to promote his new Netflix movie Carry-On, Egerton shared that there are still plans for another Kingsman movie. "I believe that was said by somebody from Fox, I think," said Egerton about Asbell's Kingsman comments. "I think... I don't know, and I don't want to speak out of school, but I don't think that necessarily means that we won't do it. I think Matthew [Vaughn] and I very much want to do one more. Made on a budget of $30 million, the action thriller Atomic Blonde earned $100 million at the box office and was meant to launch a franchise, with screenwriter Kurt Johnstad saying he envisioned the story as a trilogy. But, seven years after Focus Features (a division of Universal Pictures) released the film, a sequel has still not made it into production – and during an interview with The Direct, director David Leitch revealed what the hold-up is: Atomic Blonde 2 has gotten caught up in rights issues.
Atomic Blonde was a passion project for star Charlize Theron, who produced the film through her company Denver and Delilah Productions. Denver and Delilah started developing Atomic Blonde 2 in 2018, and in 2020 Theron revealed that the sequel was set up at the Netflix streaming service. That was the last we heard of it… until this new update from Leitch.

David and Nathan Zellner’s upcoming alien invasion comedy Alpha Gang adds Channing Tatum, Lea Seydoux, Dave Bautista, Channing Tatum and more.
Channing Tatum, Dave Bautista, Zoë Kravitz, Léa Seydoux, and Riley Keough have joined the already announced Cate Blanchett and Steven Yeun for Alpha Gang, forming one of most fun ensembles we’ve seen in a while. The alien invasion comedy hails from Sasquatch Sunset directors David and Nathan Zellner and will go up for sale at next month’s American Film Market.
With so many brilliant names attached to it, we can’t see the film having too many problems being snapped up and following that, production is set to get underway in the spring. The story sounds really fun: ‘taking place in the 1950s, it follows a group of alien invaders as they pretend to be a leather-clad biker gang. Blanchett, who also produces, will play the gang’s leader.

J.J. Perry is back in the director's chair with the romantic action comedy The Killer's Game. Perry began his career working on the stunt side of the industry, having worked on everything from the original Mortal Kombat movies in the '90s to the Wesley Snipes-led Blade and Three Kings before working his way up to being a stunt coordinator and second unit director on such hits as Tom Hardy's Warrior to The Fate of the Furious and John Wick: Chapter 2. Perry recently took a major step forward with his directorial debut in the Jamie Foxx-led Day Shift, which garnered mixed-to-positive reviews.

Director David Zellner has credits going back to 1997, when he made his feature directorial debut with the comedy Plastic Utopia, working from a screenplay he wrote with his brother, visual effects artist Nathan Zellner. But Alpha Gang missed its 2021 production start date and the Zellner Brothers made Sasquatch Sunset instead. Dave Bautista has become a well-established actor over the course of a 18 year acting career, and his chance to lead The Killer's Game turned out to be a low point in one specific area. The former wrestler got his big break by joining the Marel Cinematic Universe as Drax, and that role gave him more opportunities to join other franchises and standalone projects. The 2024 action movie represented the continued evolution of his career, as it put him back in the lead role of an action movie, one that could launch a new franchise after The Killer's Game's ending.
Bautista is no stranger to being part of franchises and projects that are successful overall. He's been in franchises - Dune, Blade Runner 2049, and Bond, and he started his own franchise with My Spy. He's also made an effort to work with Rian Johnson, M. Night Shyamalan, and other notable directors.

Chris Pine had a laugh but wasn’t exactly thrilled when fans focused more on that scene in one flick than the gritty, R-rated action. The $120M epic delivered brutal battles, but what grabbed the internet’s attention? Pine’s brief full-frontal moment. Despite the blood and gore, fans zeroed in on his unexpected cameo.

Selena Gomez is glowing up. At age 32, the former Disney star is earning awards season buzz for her work in writer-director Jacques Audiard’s “Emilia Perez,” the Spanish language movie musical that won the Jury Prize at Cannes in May as well as a collective best actress award for Gomez and her co-stars Zoe Saldana and Karla Sofía Gascón.

If there is one movie genre that has been flush with content, it's action. Fans are drawn to the action movie genre because of the cool and tough protagonists at the center of the story. In the last quarter-century, the genre has seen some of its greatest action heroes yet.
With the various stylistic differences in each new action franchise, there's a lot for fans to appreciate. Whether it's spy or espionage thrillers like Kingsman: The Secret Service or hardcore assassin adventures like The Bourne Identity, each brings something refreshing to the genre. While many action heroes are great, only one is the best.
Gary "Eggsy" Unwin Is a Fast-Learning Spy Kingsman (2014 - Ongoing)
Some of the coolest parts about the Kingsman series have a lot to do with the comics they are based on and the universe they are set in, but the films are also very entertaining of their own accord.

Dave Bautista has been a popular staple of cinema thanks to his roles in movies like Guardians of the Galaxy, Dune and Knock at the Cabin, but his latest action comedy is now hoping a quick digital release will help redeem it. The Killer's Game was released in cinemas on September 13, but became one of his worst performing movies, taking just $5.9 million at the box office. Now the film is getting a very quick turnaround and heading to digital platforms on October 4.
The Killers Game seems, on paper, to be exactly the kind of movie that Bautistas fans have been lapping up a full-on action movie with a dash of comedy. The story follows hitman Joe Flood, who discovers that he is dying from a terminal illness. Rather than meet his maker due to this, Flood puts out a hit on himself, only to discover that he was misdiagnosed and...

It's been a rough year for Lionsgate, to say the least; the studio has yet to have a movie gross more than $35 million despite producing several films with nine-figure budgets. Yet somehow, it was made worse this past weekend, as Devara: Part 1, the Indian action film, premiered in the United States and earned more than The Killer's Game has throughout its entire theatrical run. The Killer's Game stars Dave Bautista and Sofia Boutella, and was released earlier last month on September 13, yet has grossed only $5.3 million domestically. Devara: Part 1 began showing in U.S. theaters on Thursday afternoon, and has already earned $5.6 million domestically. The Killer's Game also comes with a $30 million price tag, which isn't a mind-boggling number in an age of massive budgets, but is still more than 5x what the film has grossed worldwide.

The Killer's Game's VOD release date has now been confirmed. Directed by J.J. Perry, The Killer's Game stars Dave Bautista as Joe, a hitman who puts a contract out on himself after being diagnosed with a terminal illness. When the assassins he hires also target his girlfriend, Maize (Sofia Boutella), however, Joe returns to doing what he does best. The film, which also stars Ben Kingsley, Terry Crews, Pom Klementieff, and Scott Adkins, hit theaters in mid-September, failing to make a splash at the box office.
