The American version of The Office is now 20 years old. Some of the talents involved with the hit series took some time to reflect on bringing it to life two decades ago with its earlier episodes, divulging how three of the show's writers wound up pulling double duty as on-screen actors.
Per THR, series creator Greg Daniels shared how B.J. Novak was the first person who was hired for the show. It was planned from the start for Novak to work as both a writer and an actor, and that resulted in him playing Ryan beginning with the very first episode. Daniels said he picked Novak first after recognizing his skills, noting, "It just felt to me like this is a really good place for writer-performers. I wanted to have a writer-performer vibe in the show."

On March 24, 2005, NBC aired the first episode of The Office, an American remake of the universally acclaimed, Golden Globe-winning BBC comedy of the same name. The premiere, a mockumentary that introduced the staff of the Dunder Mifflin Paper Company’s branch in Scranton, Pennsylvania, pulled in a decent-sized audience that night. It drew 11.2 million viewers following an episode of The Apprentice — but even with that start, expectations for the show were not high.
NBC had produced a pilot for The Office, written by King of the Hill co-creator Greg Daniels, in early 2004, just after Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant’s BBC show won the Golden Globe for best comedy and Gervais took home the award for best actor in a comedy. The network ordered the show to series that spring but picked up only five more episodes. After premiering on a Thursday, the remaining episodes ran on Tuesday nights, where it struggled.

This week marks the 20th anniversary of The Office, the groundbreaking NBC sitcom that redefined workplace comedy and launched the careers of several cast members. Since the show’s debut on March 24, 2005, many of its stars have gone on to successful careers in television and film, earning critical acclaim and industry recognition — but the ensemble surprisingly did not have the greatest success when it came to Emmy Awards.
Leading man Steve Carell starred as Michael Scott, the endearingly incompetent regional manager of the Scranton branch of paper company Dunder Mifflin. He received six Emmy nominations for Best Comedy Actor during his time on The Office and four Best Comedy Series nominations as part of the show’s creative team, which included creator Greg Daniels, who developed the series from the original U.K. version created by Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant. Use smaller, monosyllabic words rather than needlessly complex words for simple ideas — and also, stop reading now if you haven't watched "Severance" Season 2 Episode 9, "The After Hours."
In "The After Hours," Seth Milchick, the manager of the severed floor played by Trammell Tillman, finally cracks. While outside of Lumon Industries' severed floor, Mr. Milchick meets with his ostensible superior, Mr. Drummond (Ólafur Darri Ólafsson), and Mr. Drummond is, to put it lightly, not happy that the company's best refiner Mark (Adam Scott) is missing in action. Mark's big assignment, known only as Cold Harbor, is due today, and when Mr. Drummond tells Mr. Milchick that he's in big trouble for not corralling Mark as needed, Mr. Milchick falls back on an old habit that's already presented a problem with Mr. Drummond before: he "uses big words."

The Office remains one of the most successful shows in TV history. The series ran for nine seasons, started careers for actors like Steve Carell and John Krasinski, and popularized the mockumentary style of sitcoms. It even achieved a record for most streamed minutes in a year in 2020 with viewers watching for 57.1 billion minutes, only to be toppled by Suits three years later.
It came as no surprise then when Peacock, where the series currently resides, announced a sequel to The Office. The upcoming show, titled The Paper, won't exactly be a direct sequel, moving away from the paper-selling offices of Dunder Mifflin with brand-new characters. However, there are plenty of reasons for fans to be excited, with beloved The Office characters returning and The Paper retaining the humor that made the original series so memorable.

Oscar Nuñez will return as Oscar Martinez in Peacock’s follow-up series to “The Office,” Variety has confirmed.
Sources say Nuñez will not be the central character in the upcoming mockumentary sitcom — which takes place in the same universe as “The Office” — as it is an ensemble series. But he is part of the show’s character mix, and has been in the opening script from the beginning.
There are no further details regarding Oscar’s role or storyline in the new show, which Greg Daniels is creating and executive producing with Michael Korman (“Nathan For You”).
As of now, Nuñez is believed to be the only “Office” cast member who will appear in the follow-up series (right now still referred to as the “Untitled Daniels/Korman Project”) — but it has been noted that since it lives in the world of “The Office,” there was always a chance that characters...

Mindy Kaling is back with Running Point. She has been a singular comic voice on television for the past fifteen years. Her Fox and Hulu series The Mindy Project, which you can also find streaming on Netflix, was one of the funniest sitcoms of the decade. Then came the semi-autobiographical Never Have I Ever, a hilarious coming-of-age story unlike anything else on television, whether streaming or network.
However, Running Point is nothing like those shows because it’s just another run-of-the-mill comedy. The series is not particularly funny, relying too heavily on excessive exposition and basketball lingo that isn’t executed well. It’s pleasant enough but ultimately a gigantic letdown, given the cast and the talent involved, particularly behind the camera.

We’ve got a window for when Poker Face returns, so here’s a peek when you can see the return of TV’s most unusual crime solver!
Poker Face was a huge winner with audiences and critics when it debuted on Peacock in 2023. It’s been a longer wait for season 2 as the show was delayed by issues such as the 2023 Hollywood strikes and the busy schedule of creator Rian Johnson.
Thankfully, it’s coming with The Hollywood Reporter sharing a first peek at Poker Face season 2. That includes how it’s eying a spring 2025 release date. That’s likely going to be April or early May.

Natasha Lyonne and Rian Johnson's hit streaming series, Poker Face, is set to return this year. And, well? The list of people they've finagled to guest star in Season 2 is actually unhinged. Like, the list of people who are going to be on this show is truly outrageous and unfathomable to someone like me, a person who does not cast television shows. But if I did? And I managed to pull this off? I'd be screaming it from the rooftop, folks. Because this cast list? It's truly the best of the best of the funniest, most talented people currently working in Hollywood.
And it seems that Lyonne and Johnson recognize that, sending along a note with the press release teasing the series' forthcoming slate of episodes. And though we don't know the exact premiere date yet — all it says is "Spring 2025" — we do know the 12, 60-minute-long episodes will feature Many very,...

B.J. Novak and Mindy Kaling were seen together at the Hollywood Walk of Fame on Wednesday, where Kaling received a star on the famous street. Novak and Kaling were co-stars on the iconic TV show The Office and are also best friends.
Novak started off with a playful jab at Kaling, stating, “Mindy respects and understands this in a very intuitive way. Because in addition to being very brilliant and wildly successful showrunner, an incredible mother-of-three, a deep caring daughter and friend and mentor so many, Mindy is also, in her spare time, I assure you, very superficial.”
Novak’s speech was heartfelt but also cheeky. “Mindy, as I look around and see all of these people from your life who have believed in you from the beginning, I’m just sorry that none of us doubted you because I know how much more fun that would make this for you.

Spin-offs aren't always a good idea. For every "Frasier" or "Young Sheldon," which originated from "Cheers" and "The Big Bang Theory" respectively, there's a "Joey," the follow-up to "Friends" that spectacularly crashed and burned. "The Office" didn't get a spin-off immediately after it ended in 2013, but it almost did — and one of the show's last episodes was a backdoor pilot for the spin-off that never was. It's a good thing it never came to fruition, frankly ... because it would have screwed up the happy ending between main characters Dwight Schrute (Rainn Wilson) and Angela Martin (Angela Kinsey).
The 17th episode of the ninth and final season of "The Office," simply titled "The Farm," was intended as a backdoor pilot — a seemingly bygone practice where showrunners would center an episode around characters and scenarios that they hope will result in a spin-off later. Mindy Kaling is ready to step back in front of the camera. After both writing and starring in “The Office” and “The Mindy Project” (which she also created) early in her career, Kaling took a break from acting in recent years to focus on building a string of successful TV series — not to mention raising three young kids. That’s why you haven’t seen her pop into some of her hit comedies like “Never Have I Ever” and “The Sex Lives of College Girls.”
But that acting itch is making a bit of a return, particularly after she recently watched a few episodes of “Never Have I Ever” with her young cousins. “I was like, ‘As someone who has my own TV show and loves to act, how did I not act in the show about an Indian American family?’” Kaling says. “It was going so good that I...

Fans of The Officewon't struggle to think back on the cameo role that Amy Adams had. Early on in the series, she had a small but integral part to play. She fitted seamlessly into the mockumentary setup, and conveyed all the emotions her character went through after coming into contact with some of the bizarre people at Dunder Mifflin. The Office came early on in Adams' career in film and TV, demonstrating her ability to act with sincere realism. Moving on from the show, she has become best known for roles such as Brenda in 2002's Catch Me if You Can and 2007's Giselle in Enchanted, which earned her her first Golden Globe nomination for Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy. She later won two of those awards in the same category, for American Hustle (2013) and Big Eyes (2014).
Adams was also the first guest roles on The Office.

This year’s Oscar Best Picture race doesn’t include any straight-up comedies, although Anora could be considered a dramedy and The Substance has a number of grotesquely humorous moments. But one of the films singled out by the Academy, despite being a dramatic thriller, was recently re-staged for a live reading by some of the biggest names in comedy.
Nominated for eight Oscars, Conclave tells the story of a Cardinal, played by Ralph Fiennes, who puts together the titular conclave in order to select a new Pope after the current Pope dies. Then there’s a bunch of intrigue and mystery. It’s a good movie, but it’s not funny. Right?
Film Independent recently organized a live reading of the Conclave screenplay in L.A., presented by the original filmmaker, Edward Berger, with narration provided by screenwriter Peter Straughan. And the cast included Ayo Edebiri, Patton Oswalt, Josh Gad and Jason Mantzoukas.

On April 28, 2011, Michael Scott quietly left Scranton, Steve Carell said a tearful farewell to "The Office," and the world was never the same again. Sure, both the actor and his character dropped in for the series finale a couple of years later, but that was a nod to what had been rather than what was to come. In many ways, Carell's character was the glue that held the mockumentary sitcom together. From his antagonistic, blundering early years to his more complex (but still blundering) later career, Michael brought his employees together in shared love, collective loathing, and every emotion in between. And then he was gone.
So, why did Carell leave? At this point, the mystery of Michael's departure from the Scranton storyline isn't so much an unanswered question as an over-answered one. Different versions and rumors have swirled about at various times throughout the decade-plus since his final Season 7 appearance in the epic,...

Fairly or not, Michael Scott's (Steve Carell) departure from "The Office" in Season 7 marks the dividing line between what many fans deem "Good Office" and "Bad Office." But there was another big departure after that: Ryan (B. J. Novak) left the series at the very beginning of Season 9, along with his on-and-off girlfriend Kelly Kapoor (Mindy Kaling).
Unlike Michael, however, Ryan and Kelly leaving was not treated with a lot of fanfare. One minute they were a part of the show and the next minute they weren't, and all their coworkers simply went about life as usual. When interviewed on the "Armchair Expert" podcast in 2021, Novak explained his reasons for leaving the show as both an actor and a staff writer. The basic gist was that after eight seasons, he was sort of exhausted:
"I was burnt out, Mindy [Kaling] had left. Carell had left. And they wanted a new showrunner...
